Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt is a “challenge you to write a poem that explores a small, defined space.” For A to Z Challenge the GoodRead’s Quote author has a name beginning with letter V. Im going two work in the Prompt from MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie Prompt from last week of a letter to death

———

It is nothing to die. It is frightful not to live.” ― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

———

Such a tiny space I’ve ended in,

No satin lining, pillow, or light.

Shelved next to others kept,

Hear in this wall, directed,

The family not to pay for,

More than an urn,

But why, ask I,

Am I in,

This wall,

Left.

—–

It’s,

Easy,

To understand,

You didn’t want me —

Reminding  you, who I —

Used to be alive and whole.

That my ashes in an urn could,

Easily fall, ending up on the floor.

I’m wondering death, if you laugh at this?

——

If you comprehend my annoyance clear,

That my ashes weren’t scattered far  —

Into the park, the Off-leash trails,

Or into the water,

To a place of peace.

No walls for me,

Take my remains,

Death, cast them —

To the,

Wind.

——-

At,

First I,

Had many,

Questions,

But I knew you took,

All you needed of,

What was left of me.

And we’re no longer foes who are —

Bound to time; so you explain the whys,

Fill in the wherefores, gazing ahead soft.

——

Kingdom of light, love, facing the Heavens,

Death says this is the right place and —

I pray he isn’t wrong, for all —

Is revealed here in the —

House me Father built.

His mansion with —

Many rooms for —

The faithful,

Those souls,

Won. .

——

So,

Death you —

Have not your,

Victory.

Death you have no sting,

And in eternity,

All questions are answered,

Tranquility comes knowing,

The reason for everything —

The cross on Calvery, God’s love divine.

Day 16 – NaPoWriMo/A toZ Challenge/FFftPP: Poem – Joseph’s Star – “A Poison Tale Penned” #NaPoWriMo #AtoZchallenge #poetry #flashfiction

Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt is to ” take your inspiration, like our featured interviewee did in the chapbook she co-authored with Ross Gay, from the act of letter-writing. Your poem can be in the form of a letter to a person, place, or thing, or in the form of a back-and-forth correspondence.” The A to Z Challenge letter is O for GoodRead’s quotes and I’m combing these prompts with Roger Shipp’s FFftPP

——–

These bits of paper are covered with lies. They poison your minds. And so long as they exist, you cannot hope to see the world as it truly is.(…)You turn to them for answers and salvation. (…) You rely more upon them than upon yourselves. This makes you weak and stupid. You trust in words. Drops of ink. Do you ever stop to think of who put them there? Or why? No. You simply accept their words without question. And what if those words speak falsely, as they often do? This is dangerous.”

― Oliver Bowden, Assassin’s Creed: The Secret Crusade

———

Read your short,

Letter, it’s awkward,

It reminds me of us,

How the two of us are when —

We’re together,

It’s why I’m,

‘I.’

——

Why,

‘I,’ isn’t us,

And your words they hurt,

Didn’t know you felt so strongly

Had no idea ‘us’ was,

So much more to —

You; asking —

Why

——-

You

Never said,

As much, why you held —

Back; I guess to not be hurt?

I didn’t mean to hurt you.

It’s just I was more,

To you, than

You —

——-

Meant

To me; I —

Try to understand,

How I led you on; when I —

Should’ve stopped this charade.

Didn’t know you what,

What you felt,

Meant

——–

So,

Now I —

Read your words,

Poisoned tongue you have,

Poison words too in this —

Inked letters; they are —

Killing me,

So.

——

Not,

Only my —

Realization.

I should’ve seen the ‘writing,

On the wall,’ but I was living

Loving another,

I loved you,

Not.

——

Now,

Your poison

In ink hides easily.

Poison you’ve written with and —

You’re probably smiling now,

Because I’m dying,

Are you glad?

Now

——

You,

See I; peer —

Into the past, I —

Know now you were hiding in —

Plain sight; wickedness masked,

You never loved me.

And I loathe

You.

——

Truth

I was not

Attracted to you,

I was being nice, I thought —

We were great friends until now.

I know the real you,

Ignoring,

Truth.

——

Hours,

Later my,

Family finds my corpse.

I’ve written one word down for

Your hours of freedom

Are waning,

Hours.

——-

Lost,

You’ll only,

Be free a short while,

Then justice will reign, they’ll find —

You; you’re not the only one —

Who kills with poison,

In death you’re —

Lost

“I had never been summoned to Number 208 [by the park] before; I nervously adjusted my coat . . .” A person could book a pick-up online or by phoning into FedEx but you couldn’t summon a particular delivery person, could you?

“April, it means what I said,” Becky from the warehouse told me on the phone, “I’m not being rude, the lady who lives there wanted you, specifically, at her home.”

The door was open when I arrived. “I’m here,” a frail female voice rasped.

Walking into the house I heard the respirations of a woman on a ventilator. She was all hollows and sallow skin. Her hair was whispy white and thinning. Eyes the color of blue-bells greeted me but they were bloodshot.

The woman grasped a yellow envelope with a trembling hand. She shook the envelope and a key dropped out.

Her shaking fingers held it out, “For me?” I asked.

I took the key staring at it in confusion; it appeared ancient. As I examined it I heard the woman gasp something. I moved closer to her and held her hand attempting to hear her strained voice. She shook her head with a ragged sigh and breathed her last.

Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner: Grandpa’s Fish Pond #amwriting #flashfiction #fiction

Thanks too Roger Shipp for hosting FFftPP.

Phallon watched the fish swim in the pond his Grandpa had installed in his backyard. He enjoyed visiting his Grandpa each Saturday. Grandpa had put the pond in because young Phallon loved the fish so much as a toddler; ‘fishes’ had been his first word.

Now he sat with Grandpa who asked him about school and of course the girls in his school. Uncomfortable, Phallon wished Grandpa didn’t ask him about that.

Grandpa simply laughed,”Phallon, I’m only teasing you. It’s good you have friends who are girls and that there are girls you like. This Jennifer, have you asked her out?”

Phallon’s face turned red, “Yeah we’ve gone to a movie together and bowling. I want her to be my girlfriend but her parents say she’s too young to have a boyfriend.”

Grandpa nodded a smile on his face, “You’ll find the right one when you’re older. When I saw your Grandma the first time, my heart lept out of my chest. I wonder if I will ever meet that right girl of yours and see you marry her?”

Phallon felt uncomfortable again, “Why wouldn’t you be there Grandpa? You’re only eighty-one?”

Grandpa patted Phallon’s hand then squeezed it, “You know, my boy, I’ve been sick a long time. It’s a battle I’ve mostly conquered, but my strength is waning these days. When you get married someday, think of your old Grandpa, okay?” Phallon nodded feeling a lump in his throat.

Two-years later Grandpa succumbed. Phallon was sixteen and felt raw inside. He returned to the fish pond in Grandpa’s  back yard. He noticed the fishes were floating and the reality of life made tears wet his cheeks. In the mess of the last two weeks including Grandpa’s funeral, no one had remembered to feed the fish.

Poem: Quatrains: “What Never Heals”

“I know that’s what people say– you’ll get over it. I’d say it, too. But I know it’s not true. Oh, you’ll be happy again, never fear. But you won’t forget. Every time you fall in love it will be because something in the man reminds you of him.”

― Betty Smith, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

******

One day you promised me the pain,

Would eventually heal, I’d be —

Free from photographs and the shame.

While I am here, tears streaming.

Out of my mind, of my head,

Did you burn memories seething?

They never left my soul, they’re undead,

While I’m here, tears streaming.

You and her, it’s the cut deepest,

Never heals, it bleeds; you beaming

A baby’s breath; life makes me weak.

While I’m here, tears streaming.

At times, I’m over you completely,

Then, an image leaves me grieving.

Heart of the girl, a heart too sweet.

While I’m here, tears streaming.

Conversation wouldn’t aid, I —

Learn to sew up all broken seams.

Especially in sleep, where I cry,

While I’m here, tears streaming.

A few hours, a few days and —

I’ll be fine again —breathing.

Didn’t have much, nothing so grand.

While I’m here, tears streaming.

Let go, let me free, unburden me,

Stop snipping my wings, inhaling

The past’s ashes, it chokes me,

I was here, tears dried; now I’m free.

Mom, you didn’t say, how cruel the world is,

I could blame you for it all, but I’m grown.

Teach me, I could’ve learned by your grace known.

Each day I’m run down by trains, it’s fun this–

Game; ears ringing from sound trains make hissing.

Or a bus in front of me is coming, near miss —

Only by seconds I’m safe, empty words moan.

Why do I being pulverized feel sewn

Together a quilt, with all pieces, its bliss.

How do I explain I needed guidance?

It hurts me, you decided, gave me up.

Without your words, boys became as chocolate,

Choosing the worst, failing being grown-up.

Addicted, inhaling them, drug sate.

You could’ve taught me better, it’s too late.

Our pictures scattered,

Cross the ground, snowflakes —

Gathering, wetting,

Our times together lost in,

Snow, packing higher, hiding.

Tired of calling, this

Is the last time I’m telling —

You, put my name on,

Your list of significance,

So daft –never mind, too late.

Today I quit you,

Today I saw through you and —

Snow piled up on–

Pictures meaning nothing much,

Goodbye, you’re just glass; I’m steel.

Walking beneath trees,

Nature inviting me back in,

Your frosty winter —

Gone when spring comes with daisies,

Buttercups, roses, grass.

Met you one last time,

Found our pictures decaying,

You looked beneath, saw —

The blue and it was stunning,

But it was never us, thank God.

Life rolls by you think you’re forgotten but wait

Your heart holds me, for love it’s never too late.

She wasn’t the one, it happened again — you failed,

Tonight you’ll drink beer, eat  ice cream, pass out –wail.

For your lover who’s lost, who never loved you,

You filled her time, until the right match came through.

It’s easy to lay on the couch all day mad,

Or curse, yell about why she makes you so irate.

But two-weeks have passed, end the bereavement stage,

Time to awake, you’re alive so live –engage.

Life rolls by you think you’re forgotten but wait —

Your heart holds me,  for love it’s never too late.
——-

She wasn’t the one, it happened again, you failed,

Tonight you’ll drink beer, eat ice cream, pass out –wail.

Don’t fall back to bad habits, find a routein,

You may feel empty, fake it until you believe —

You’re content, a person with friends and full life.

Realizing you’d lost the you from you, your light.

Inner spark rekindled, explore as you please,

Don’t ditch your mates, laugh — stretch your soul, be appeased.

Expand your knowledge, discover new interests,

No guilt, you’re learning to assert, not splinter.

Life rolls by you think you’re forgotten but wait —

Your heart holds me, for love it’s never too late.
——

For your lover who’s lost, who never loved you,

You filled their time, until the right match came through.

I’ve been waiting long, for a glimpse of your grin.

For you to open up, for you to to heal within.

At the right moment, I’ll reveal my secret.

Loved you, from the first moment; feel such weakness,

Didn’t try to push, always near you, I seek.

Your lips in the car, a wonderful surprise,

Never thought you loved me; now I realize.

Life rolls by you think you’re forgotten but wait —

Your heart holds me, for love it’s never too late.

——

It’s easy to lay on the couch all day mad.

Or curse, yell about why she made you so irate.

You’ve me in your grasp now, I won’t let her win.

For you to feel sorrow over her, such a sin.
She wasn’t worth your effort, wasn’t worth your time.

I’m loyal; I’m steadfast; we’re friends first, consign —

Awful memories to experience, and love me more.

Distance may separate, years pass –our love’s sworn.

Who was she? Thank her hurtfulness thoughtfully,

Pain healed, gave –love, passion, silence comfortably.

Life rolls by you think you’re forgotten but wait —

Your heart holds me , for love it’s never too late.

“Find what you love and let it kill you,” love?

Not convinced of such advice; I feel through

Strife for all you who love, learning thereof,

You’re drained, weighing yourself down, you pained fool.

See love already makes you pay?

Don’t panic dreading, nor cling fast.

Life goes by fast, have you read?

Knowledge balance — passion and sass.

For unreal love, don’t die gallant.

You cannot last, with such false love.

Nothingness, lover’s grave now grass.

People alter their love, cast out love.

I’m not thinking of dying slow, faltering.

Enjoy laughing, for life’s done in a wink.

Wish not to sink in grave, for fresh air gasping.

Not leaving fast; learning never to blink.

You don’t know you; it changes, what you in life love.

Passion a glove, fits at the time, ends though —

You’ve no slight clue, once you’re dead — you’re above.

Live now, death costly price for draining you.
