#OctPoWriMo – Day 27 – Ghazal – “Scent Divine” #amwriting #poetry

Day 27 Prompt: Favorite Scent

“Fragrance is a powerful thing. It can bring you back to your favorite meal your mother used to make, to your first kiss, to any number of events in your life. Free write for 10 minutes and see where your nose leads you, if your words need some encouragement, walk outside, down the street, through a mall, through a forest until your nose reminds you and the words begin to flow.”

Ghazal:

“A Ghazal is a poem that is made up like an odd numbered chain of couplets, where each couplet is an independent poem. It should be natural to put a comma at the end of the first line. The Ghazal has a refrain of one to three words that repeat, and an inline rhyme that preceedes the refrain. Lines 1 and 2, then every second line, has this refrain and inline rhyme, and the last couplet should refer to the authors pen-name… The rhyming scheme is AA bA cA dA eA etc.”

Autumn was such a time for us,

Love was fun, nothing dangerous.

Leaves falling deep red, orange, yellow.

Met you walking, strong and mellow.

Attractiveness found, conversation, tokens.

Hid memories in a box, saved before broken.

——-

Paper boats sailed on peaceful lake,

Sitting ‘neath trees, in your arms wake.

Photographs you took of me and —

Made me laugh, giggle; life was grand.

Such times we had, you lugging your camera around,

Pictures of us, many left, they’re here surrounding.

——

Photobooth, and I sat on your —

Lap; laughing again, not sorry.

Your handsome face, so dear to me,

Making you laugh, my mission, see?

Making faces in photos in my underwear,

I knew I could coax out a smile, you loved me bare.

——

Exposed to you, negatives shot,

Our days close, even when we fought.

Knew you well, every smile and frown,

Wish you were alive, but you drowned.

Now our time is done, my photographer, my love.

All these pictures snapped, thinking of us, our short love.

——

A spritz of the perfume I wore,

The day we meant, special for —

Not forgetting you now; playing —

Songs we sang, piano keys they say,

Through music what I could never admit alone,

Autumn was our time, in your arms laying, I was home.

Flash Fiction For Aspiring Writers – A Sleep Like Death

” What should we do tonight? ” Brian asked his wife Kate.

” I don’t know babe” Kate replied “Same thing we do every night after supper?”

“Nah, it’s such a nice night outside, lets go take Kreacher and Daisy for a walk. There getting fat. You give them too many table scraps.”

Brian and Kate embarked on a walk in the forest by their house. The dogs were running all over and chasing each other until they came upon a wealth of mysterious plants. Kreacher sniffed at one then snorted and walked away.

“What’s this?” remarked Kate, ” It’s growing all over. I’ve never seen it before, and we’ve lived here ten years.”

“Huh” Brian said and began to finger one of the plants. But when he looked up both the dogs and Kate had collapsed on the forest floor where they breathed deeply in sleep. Brian yawned, and fought the wave of lethargy overtaking his body before he too slept.

A passing sorcerer smiled darkly at the sleeping bodies. Didn’t they understand, they had crossed into her backyard –an enchanted forest. Any human or beast who smelled her favourite flowers fell into a sleep like death. No telling, who or what would wake them. Certainly, not her.

Poem: Hiding In Sleep

The narrow escape at the end of the day,

The time we call sleep and survive on dreamscapes,

I sometimes cannot wait to fall into this bliss.

But now I’m awake in the deep of the night,

And I cannot but feel the realiness of being wide eyed and sleepy,

But then I find beauty, when I finally find peace,

And wake to a day that I will complete

With the veil of slumber tucked under my eyes.

And then I will see if the next night drifts by in the blink of a moment,

Maybe, this night will bring a surprise,

When terrors are lost in the sandman’s hand,

And sleeping is floating on clouds way up high.

And the moment I wake up and find that one day,

Sleep has left me replete and how thankful I’ll feel.

That I can go about my day with no worry,

And do all the things that I need to do,

And have all my wishes and prayers come to fruition.

I’ll be so happy, I’ll be so alive, until I go to sleep and find,

I’ve been living my days in my head while I dreamt,

And tomorrow’s activity is more of the same,

An absolute train wreck that no one can hear.
