Blogger Recognition Award #awards #amwriting

——-

Thanks to Sascha Darlington for nominating me for this award. I think we both have only recently began following each other and I’m pretty obsessed with her short stories about Clare, Damien, and Dominic already. She writes them according to whatever the prompt is that day for each story. It’s a complicated love triangle for Clare.

Check-out this recent piece here. I garuntee you’ll want to go back and read up on what happened before.

WHY I STARTED BLOGGING:

Well I’ve explained before, but not sure where. I was sick in 2008 to 2009. After a brief psychotic episode I had a depressive episode. I never had a psychosis again but the depressive episode meant I developed difficulties reading and writing (cognitive skills were impaired). I had to build both skills back up.

I’m an English Major from back in 2007. I wrote well and wanted my talent back. I started the blog to improve my writing, editing, and reading skills and to write about my ongoing mental illness — depression with severe fatigue.

I have worked so much on my writing, especially writing more creatively. I took writing courses online from WordPress and from certain extension programs at several universities. I have done years of Flashfiction and started writing poetry about a year or two after first blogging. Poetry is something I’ve wrote since I was small. I started learning and practicing different forms of poetry (sonnets, Tankas, Cinquins, Laurenells etc.) and doing not only free verse (which comes fluidly for me) but metered and rhymed poetry on my blog.

In January last year I began focusing even more on fiction and poetry so I could submit my work to different literary websites, magazines, and do guest blog posts; I continue doing this. I finished the first draft of a novel which took years to get past chapter four and now I haven’t had time to work on the second draft of late past chapter seven.

I also occasionally blog nonfiction about movies, books, music, current events, beauty, fashion, or maybe a certain experience or memory. My blog has evolved a lot over almost five-years. My writing is much improved and I’m so grateful that as well as being able to write well, I read well too. I read books on writing, romance, adventure, fantasy, and the enjoyable books published by my Blogger friends along with reading many blogs whenever I’m able.

Blogs are fluid things and they become whatever you’re focusing on at a certain time or place in your life. That’s my opinion 😉.

MY ADVICE TO NEW BLOGGERS:

When you start blogging, pick a theme that looks professional (easy to read from and visually pleasing) and ensure you complete putting together your blog as much as you’re able including contact page, about you, and any social media links, so your content will be automatically shared to Twitter for instance. You can put links to other social networking sites on the sidebars of your blog such as a directly to your writer/blogger Facebook Page or Instagram page on your blog.

My most hated thing to do on a blog is to have to search all over for a ‘Follow Me’ button. Put that at the top of your page and the bottom. You want people to follow you even on a whim so make it easy for them to do this. Also, when you’ve started posting, make sure we can see your other posts which are relatable or recent on the bottom of your blog or side – somewhere. If I like a blog, I want to read more. Also, pop-ups are annoying and unneccesary.

As for writing, don’t be afraid to be honest with yourself and in your writing. Honesty and authenticity shows through and is attractive to readers who seek to relate. Edit well but remember you can always edit more after you post –happens to me all the time.

Cutting your word count and doing Flashfiction is a great way to learn how to edit well and make each sentence count. Do prompts and challenges and write everyday, even if you don’t post on your blog. Keep your anonymity if you like, but I have found with blogging, through writing more personal pieces, you can help many people through their challenges in life with your own.

Make it a habit to follow and read other bloggers. WordPress is an awesome community and it helps everyone and their writing to comment on their pieces and in return make friends and gain followers. You can even reblog posts you love or Press them as a new post, share them via social networking, email, or print them out. Allow your readers to have these options as well, when they read your blog.

Also, be kind in your comments. Concustructive criticism is helpful for many but it doesn’t always come across as positive. So be careful how and when you use it and with whom.

Writing 101: Wrapping it Up #everydayinspiration #amwriting

The last prompt for Writing 101 is a wrap up post.

——–

To tell you the truth, I’ve taken writing 101 many times now and writing 201, so I don’t have a lot to say as a wrap up. Initially taking it, I met many new blogger friends and saw my writing improve. At that point, I was maybe posting once or twice a week and the initial course taught me to blog everyday. I thought maintaining a post a day would be a challenge, but these days I post when I’m inspired, or when I receive a prompt email for a particular challenge. I hope it improves my writing still.

If anything I think the WordPress writing courses, stretch your comfort zone for kinds of posts you can write. I hope you newbies out there found it helpful. Although, I do miss the discussion boards where we could easily find other’s work and meet new bloggers through the board. Although, it’s probably much easier for WordPress to host the courses in this new format.

My blogging schedule through the summer will hopefully, appear roughly like this:

Monday – Moral Monday’s 100 Word Stories with Nortina

Tuesday – Flash Fiction for the Aspiring Writer with Priceless Joy

Wednesday – Literary Lion (once a month) with Laura and Sonya’s Three Line Tales (weekly).

Thursday – Le Duchesse D’erat List Prompts with Le Duchesse

Friday – Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner with Roger Shipp

Saturday – Free

Sunday – Sunday Photo Fiction with Alistair Forbes.

Not to mention, I will continue my journey through new and old poetry forms, often using The Daily Prompt words in my poems. I would like to do some reading of books and spend time editing the novel so, that will take up time. Not sure, each post will be on schedule. That’s my wrap up for Writing 101.

Thoughts on May and Beyond

http://www.pinterest.com
Each month I try to give you guys a bit of an update on my life. It’s been a while since I have been able to sit down and think about things.

April was extremely busy, writing a poem a day for National Poetry Writing Month. As I wrote each day in accordance with the prompt provided on the website, I also tried to do various forms of poetry. This is continueous with the poetry journey I have been on this year, learning new types of poetry from Shadow Poetry.

I found my first attempts at new kinds of poetry frustrating at times this month, because I was having to write poems using a prompt, and write on weekends too. I think I wrote the best poetry going back to types of poetry I had used before and had had the chance to refine over the months in 2015 and 2016.

As much as I love April’s NaPoWriMo, I’m glad it is done and I can focus on some other aspects of writing. I was scraping the bottom, the last few poems I wrote for the challenge. Kudos to those of you who both did NaPoWriMo and the A to Z challenge.

I think my biggest concern lately has been with weight put on from medications in the past, which I haven’t been able to lose. I had a good idea I would gain another ten pounds off last July’s medication switch. I don’t regret doing the changes in hospital, but I would really love it if I could even get my body weight down twenty-pounds.

A good friend of mine from university L, started on this new supplement program. It’s not only about losing weight but getting proper vitamins, having more energy, and feeling healthier all around. I’m careful where supplements are concerned because sometimes they react with medication. However, I brought an ingredients list to my pharmacist and he said it was fine. You would hope so, as all the ingredients are naturally sourced.

Initially, I lost 5 lbs and 8.5 inches on what they call an 8 day detox. I was happy with this result, but once I started back on their day 9 to 30 diet, I gained back the weight. Now I find, I have also gained back inches and put on a couple pounds on the weightloss meal plan. I’m frustrated because I actually know many people including my friend, who over months kept losing weight on the weightloss plan and on these supplements.

My friend said try increasing your protein and I tried it last week but as I feared, the protein increase made me put on a couple pounds and inches. So, I went back to smaller amounts of protein except for the last meal of the day, so I remain full at night. I have issues with finding myself ravenously hungry at night. Right around 11:00 pm to 1:00 pm, my stomach thinks it needs food now. I guess, I will have to convince it otherwise.

The weight issue is extremely discouraging when I’m doing the same plan as my good friend, but can’t lose the weight. I got into a bad habit after a month and half of trying to lose more weight. I began eating some delicious calorie loaded food because I was not losing weight anyways. But stepping on the scale a moment, changed my mind about continuing this trend.

On a good note, I have found a supplement I take called xyng, to be an extremely excellent product. It actually increases my energy. I take one pill in the morning and one in the afternoon. It is supposed to help with a person’s metabolism and appetite, but I haven’t noticed those effects. But I do notice I have much less energy without the xyng so I plan to keep taking it with a couple of other supplements from the product line I liked for the health benefits. I’m planning on carefully sticking to the meal plan for the next while, to see if it goes better. It may or may not.

Between poetry writing, I have been going full-out trying to finish the first draft of How Was Last Night For You. I’m a chapter or two away from finishing the novel in first draft. Last week I became stuck at a pivotal point in one of the main character’s story. I’m going to think about it a bit before continuing on. The ending needs to be strong as well as set me up for book two in the series. Yes, there will be a second novel, I have been considering it for some time and once this one is mostly complete, I will begin planning book two.

I have been researching and saving articles on publishing books and a generous blogger even provided me with information for a couple of fantastic editors. Right now I have a fellow writer looking my work over, it’s a huge job. When he said editing it  ‘line by line’ he meant it. I am hoping I’m able to provide him with the same quality of feedback with his writing projects. Having that feedback has helped me a great deal in regards to writing short pieces of flash fiction, especially with meaningful dialogue.

I’m also participating in a challenge called #Maydays and the generous host K.L. Caley, provides a prompt each day. Thus far, I have chosen to write fiction, heavy on the dialogue as I am attempting to ‘show‘ verses ‘tell‘ in my writing and working on developing better dialogue. I’d be interested to hear what other writers think about these terms. Do you agree there should be more ‘showing‘ than ‘telling‘ in a work of fiction?

Another aspect of my blog I would like to work on is having a couple of guest bloggers a month. I’m interested in people as a writers and I have some interview questions I can email to that effect. Why you write, how you started etc. If you would like to be a guest blogger/writer please comment on this post or go to the top of my blog page, to the contact me page.

As for the rest of life, I’m back to reading a lot again. I’ve forgotten how reading a great book can go quickly and find myself moving through different genres of books with speed. It’s not that I’m not absorbing the books information; I’ve always been a fast reader, when I’m feeling well and can concentrate. I will update you guys on some of the books I like sometimr in May. As well. I will have new beauty posts and some other posts unrelated to writing in the coming months. I’ve been unable to do these kinds of posts  lately, due to having to keep up with my novel writing.

I spent a wonderful night out attempting to paint a picture and drinking wine with some friends at a small wine place downtown. It was a lot of fun despite not being able to make my painting look like the one the instructor had painted. I’ve never been an ‘exact’ painter, I go with the flow.

Also, I saw the third movie in the Divergent Series of movies called Allegiant. I’m not entirely sure if this is part 1 or if there is a part 2? I thought they were breaking the third book Allegiant, into two parts for the movie but perhaps I’m wrong? If you know let me know 🙂

I’m looking forward to Alice Through the Looking Glass, this summer in theatres, the new Captain America and Iron Man film, a new addition to The Pirates of the Caribbean movies with Orlando Bloom in it and the newest Harry Potter-like movie coming out in Fall, set in the 1920’s.

As for TV, I’m anticipating a twisty finale for Scandal and hopefully, something big on Grey’s Anatomy since last season was not an exciting ending, more of a tying up of loose ends with McDreamy’s death a few episodes before the Finale. Also, I’m looking forward to watching Season 5 of Downton Abbey and Season 2 of The Fall on Netflix.

As for other things, enjoying walking in the river valley in the warm spring weather. It’s not so hard now without a dog, I’ve grown used to it. Also, doing yoga as always. I think if you have trouble with exercise or are starting trying to be fitter, yoga or Pilates is excellent in keeping your body toned and flexible. Just start at an easy beginner level and repeat it until you can do the exercise pattern for longer or the moves become too easy. Then move up from there. If it is never easier add another beginner routine in for variety and remember even doing a small amount of exercise, you are lapping everyone on the couch!

Additiinally, a quick congrats to one of my besties Tara for becoming engaged in Hawaii last week. Also, since I probably didn’t mention her, congrats to one of my other besties Shannon for her engagement earlier this year! So excited for you both!

Poem: Free Verse – ” Writing Freedom of Art”

. Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. ― Leonard Cohen

 ——-

http://www.ilovebodyart.com

—–

What do you do when there is no freedom in art? When your controlled by rhyme schemes,

By repetition and meter?

I thought this was creativity and freedom,

No one said I had to sign on the dotted line,

No one told me these forms we’ve created are stencils,

And stencils, don’t allow for drawing outside the lines,

If there is no freedom elsewhere, give me liberty of art.

To write in every and any form, to choose the guides we’re taught,

Though I love a fantastic rhyme and a a unique poetry type,

I’m getting lost behind all the hype,

Whatever became of free expression?

Words that tumbled out of you that had no edges,

They came out and simply were,

They are;  you can’t conform these thoughts,

They’re not meant to be placed in parallelograms,

To exist inside triangles, or even in infinity,

These words only are, and exist because they must,

Aren’t these words the language of your heart screaming out,

Your art in the form you can honestly behold and serve,

Finding strangers to comprehend this secret language is absurd,

Each heart speaks so significantly and in it’s own dialect.

We know the words, but do we know how they connect the lines back to a person,

Their inner most thoughts and feelings,

Passions running high and talent divides,

Those who run with freedom of words and say as they like,

Those that let the heart-words speak in loud voice,

Those who nurture a writer’s spirit know only,

The driving need and insistence laid upon your spirit when you were gifted with your voice.

This art that calls, jeers, and whispers; never giving way.

Zooming out to restful images of nature, lying in the grass where you can finally breathe.

Not suffocate on iambic pentameter, or be caught in couplets or quatrains.

Idyllic pastoral poetry might give you reprise,

Floating on clouds, powder puffs in the sky,

Sifting bare feet in sand and jumping as the tide licks your feet.

Writing your secrets of peace and tranquility; the sane that stops the insane,

Art still calls as a lark in the morning, a jaybird singing melodically,

Free-verse, or prose poetry, the futuristic form of many a poet,

A burden of the old and the new, confiding they find each other crude,

But any voice who has a song, just sing, your words or story,

Your words are diamonds, polished or rough, waiting to explode in jewelled luminescence.

Waiting to be incense to a world who needs to hear, breathe in the smoke of truth; have your Liberty.

Freedom of voice, it’s an art to be free to write,

What strikes you at the time, and to be able to stop, when exhaustion lingers,

To not be chained to an inner voice who constantly begs, “write.”

To let out that voice when you wish and write in your chosen method.

No stencils, merely pen and paper.

Maybe keys on the iPad, as it glows white light into midnight.
