MishMash December

Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope it hasn’t been a hard start for those of you coming back from Thanksgiving holidays. Last week I had two things to do: Christmas shop online and study for my Residential Furnishing’s Final. I’m happy to say I wrote the final today and although the essay part I found difficult to do, I think I put enough examples and information on Early Moderan furnishings that I formed a good enough essay. I hope so anyways. I received my proposal back and got an A- on that and have an A- on the midterm, so I just need to keep my mark at an A- and I’ll be happy. It would help with some of other courses where I was only able to earn a B-. But it is exciting because my Residential Interiors Certificate is finished and I receive it in June 2017. It’s good to feel a sense of completion, that I was able to accomplish something even though throughout these almost eight years I have been too sick to work. I am still looking into some kind of writing course for the Winter term or Spring term. Now that I have more time tomorrow I can look into what kind of course and from where I want to take it.

My Christmas shopping online was a success, sort of. . . In fact, the only thing I wasn’t able to buy were some clothing I wanted from Banana Republic. But I think I will save that for next pay cheque. Honestly, for the items I had to buy I didn’t find I received that great of a deal. Purdy’s (the chocolate store) had free standard shipping. Indigo books had the best deals. I got three throws for various relatives on sale for $22.50 each and assorted nice looking gift bags all for $2 to $3. They also had an extra 10% off you paid by Visa. As well,  I bought some gift cards and those of course have no money off because they are like cash. I shopped at Lush online but no discount there. Sephora did have some great holiday deals for different sets. I got a Bliss set with hand lotion, body butter, and shower gel for $18.00. The part that was the deal was a ton of free samples from various makeup and skincare lines. Also, they had $13.00 gift sets on Black Friday but none I liked. I really wanted this eyeshadow palett from Tarte but the 25% discount Tarte was offering didn’t apply to their holiday sets. So basically I’m done the shopping part except for some wine from DeVine wines downtown for Christmas Eve, me, and my God Parents. Then I just have to make all the presents look pretty around Christmas time.

I went to a show at the Expo Center in Edmonton; it was called “Make It Edmonton.” The is all about buying local handmade items that various vendors are selling, that have to be of a certain quality. The show goes is in Vancouver too. I picked up some wine tags and a couple of bamboo screened t-shirts with birds on them. They were cute and there were some bamboo scarves with a screened bird images on them that were also nice in several colors. I liked a couple vendors who made silk scarves and dyed them by hand. There was so much beautiful jewelry. A lot of it was simple but I liked this pearl and crystal necklace made out of a piece of an old clock. There were also some yummy chocolate Ganache cupcakes and some gluten free cookies for my Dad. Many of the vendors at “Make It” you might see on Etsy. I am going to the butterdome craft show next Saturday with my Mom and I don’t know how different it will be. Usually, it’s a bit more crafty and has a bit more varied items. Think more wood carving and wool mittens.

Anyway, I came home after my exam today and I felt as if I wanted to clean and tidy things up. I don’t often feel this way so I figured I better act on the feeling. I put all my interior design materials away from my course and cleaned up in the living room where I study. Then I noticed that my room was dusty so I thoroughly cleaned a dresser and one section of my room from expired or barely used beauty products, dust, and clothing that is going to Good Will. I’ll finish off some more cleaning  tomorrow. Cleaning away the old makes me feel as if everything is ready for brand new life events and the holiday season.

In addition,  what came out of my cleaning up are some new beauty blogging ideas over the next few weeks. First, I don’t think I’ve ever done a blog (except on dry shampoo) on my favourite hair products and brands and why I use these particular ones. I also want to link that with The Small Things Blog and include some of Kate’s (the blogger) more recent hair tutorials that I have been doing. So you’ll have access to those YouTube videos. Also, I wanted to share a video on my skincare routine. It’s extremely important to take care of your skin and I am going to share with you the products from Clinique and else where that have worked for me, some since high school and some more recently.Lastly, I have a beauty blog to do on a mishmash of products I have received as larger samples in my Luxebox’s or that I have bought that don’t fit into a particular catagory of beauty products. So, three beauty posts ahead.

Addotionally, I can’t stop being excited about our football league this year, the CFL, and my home team the Edmonton Eskimos who won the Grey Cup (named for the Earl of Grey one-hundred-and-three years ago. He’s also the same earl who earl grey tea is named after). The Grey Cup was Sunday in Winnipeg. The weather was decent. Some years they play in -30 degree Celsius weather outside. But November has been beautiful in Canada. I watched football while I studied and drank red wine to celebrate as we narrowly defeated the Ottawa RedBlacks. It’s also great because my Dad is a Saskatchewan Roughrider’s fan who will cheer for any team but my Eskimos. We beat his team and the team he cheered for at the Grey Cup so that is always a plus.

I know many of you are probably like: “Canada has a football league and it isn’t the NFL?” Yes, we most certainly do and the same way you get many Canadian hockey players in the US, we get football players from some of your universities in the US to come play in our league. Many of our players are Canadian or American and are extremely talented, they have just chosen to play in the CFL out of love. But we also get players who don’t make it on NFL teams or players who are training themselves to be better so they can go on to play in the NFL. Doing this as a player can work but doesn’t always. The biggest difference in the CFL is that we have three downs instead of four. So, what this means is in the CFL you have only three chances to move the football ten yards before the other team gets the ball. There are some other differences too I think some differences with the yardage on the field and number of players but I haven’t looked into it lately. Anyways, enjoy your NFL, many of my friends are in a pool trying to get the most wins from the teams they picked. Let’s just say there is a player with the last name Eifert, and that’s not a common name in Canada or the US, so whatever team he is on, I want my cousin (of however many times) to win.

To end, I will mention that I will as always have other blog topics besides beauty. I am doing a Writing 101 poetry course on WordPress and I’ll just see what happens from there.

Thanks for reading!

A Little of This and Some of That.

Well it’s American Thanksgiving already, so soon. It means that Christmas is upon us in full swing. I have my list items I want to purchase Black Friday. Some of it is presents and some of it’s personal. I like to do most of my would be ‘Boxing Day’ shopping now because the deals and selection of items is better. Items tend to be picked over at times after Christmas. So, I have an order for Indigo,  with some cozy throws and Christmas gift bags. I have to send two more boxed gift sets from Lush to two of my close friends. I need to do an order to Purdy’s online for chocolates for everyone. I need to purchase a gift card for my Mom. I was hoping Loft, but I can’t get the gift card buying option to work online. So, I’ll have to see about what I buy for her. Maybe, Cleo’s ? And quite importantly, I need stamps  for Christmas cards. Then for me, there are a few items of clothing I would like from Banana Republic

In Residential Interiors, I am half-way through the furnishing slides I need to know for my Final on Modern Furniture. Starting with Frank Lloyd Wright in 1909 up to a few prolific modern designers in 2013. I need the notes from tonight’s class fast. Then once I have those, I can transfer that information onto the paper copies I am using to study the exam slides. Some of the slides I will have to go look up more information on as the note taker didn’t provide good notes for some pieces of furniture. Then I have to read the remainder of the textbook, three or four chapters I think. Followed by me going through all the modern day slides and comparing them with the notes so I know about those slides incase they are on the Final. Then I need to memorize the information on the final exam slides. So, that is going to be a lot of work. Thank goodness I write in the afternoon next Tuesday. I am looking for a course to take next semester, but so far no such luck. I would like to do something in Winter because it gets so dark outside and you feel stuck inside so it is great to keep busy. I applied for graduation so I will receive my Residential Furnishings Certificate in June 2017.

I read a book called Wallbanger a chick -lit book by Alice Clayton, last year. Clayton wrote a sequel to this book called Rusty Nailed and a short novella sequal to that called Last Call. In the same series, there are also some other books about different couples. But the three books I have fallen for are about Simon, Carolyn, and Carolyn’s cat Clide. They are hilarious books especially the first one concerning how Simon and Carolyn and their friends meet and end up coupled off. The next two books are about Simon and Carolyn getting together despite the issues of the past, the issues of their friends (who are also in each book), career issues, and cat issues. I’m not a cat person but when Clayton writes at the end of each book from Clides view point it is so funny. So, if you are into literature for women that makes you laugh and you like love stories, check out this triplet from Alice Clayton. If you’ve read her books before, what did you think?

So, starting to plan into December already. I am meeting my friend for coffee Thursday and going on a date Saturday. After my exam, I will be going to lunch with a friend and later to see Mockingjay Part II with my youngest brother and his girlfriend. I also want to see the new Starwars: The Force Awakens it seems more interesting then the last set of movies they made about Starwars. Need to make it to a wine store sometime in there too. Going to get my haircut in December too, so it’s nice for Christmas and all the festivities involved in that. Also, who can forget holiday baking. There is just my parents at home and I now so I’ve cut down a lot but I’m thinking shortbread, spice cookies, turtle squares, and some chocolate chip cookies. We’ll see how much I get made.

Have a lovely week.

Writing 101: Day 12 – Being Thankful and Shopping Sales.

Prompt: Critique something.
I know that Black Friday is coming. Last year I avoided it, most of my Christmas shopping was done by that point. But from online shopping emails,  I noticed how great the deals were from both Canadian and American stores. I remember going to Banana Republic Canada’s website and seeing all clothes were 50% off. That hardly ever happens at Banana Republic! The best price you can get is 40 % off and that’s not often. In fact, it was odd to me that Canadian websites and stores were giving deals that were so good on Black Friday and they were better then the Canadian equivalent, Boxing Day deals. I like to shop, that’s not a lie. But I also have this part of conscience that is telling me that whether we are shopping crazily on Black Friday Week or Boxing Week, we are missing the point of the holidays these shopping marathons are based around.

The largest difference between Canadian and US Thanksgiving is when we hold our festivities. Canadians celebrate the second Monday in October and Americans the third weekend in November. But I know for both nations, it is a time for us to be thankful for all God has provided us with in our lives. For the plenty we have in our wants and needs. We remember so many do not have ‘plenty’ in other places in the world. We give thanks to be alive and for the relative peace we find living in our countries, especially when places so close to our hearts such as Paris, are attacked by terrorists. We eat large meals and see our family, whom we may not see all year. But to be specific, Wikipedia tells me, the first thanksgiving was celebrated in the US after the pilgrims first harvest in the New World in 1621. The feast lasted three days and in attendance were fifty three pilgrims and ninety Native Americans. In Canada, we simply celebrate the harvest and other blessings of the past year during our Thanksgiving celebration. But I wonder how such a time of thankfulness has become a shopping race, to find the best deals. To think of all we ‘want,’ instead of all we have.

Every Black Friday or Cyber Monday we see Americans literally fighting over electronics and grabbing items from each other as if they were toddlers. People are pushy, loud, and not nice to each other. They think that if they act how they act, they’ll get all the items they want. It is all about “me” and “I” or “my family.” I have to say it is worse on Black Friday in the US, worse then it ever gets in Canada even though Black Friday is gaining force here. But I’m not sure deals will be as great this year with the fall of the Canadian dollar from near parity.

What ever happened to being a decent person, sharing, and being thankful for what you have? You may get a great deal but at what immoral price? What are you teaching the younger generations when you gorge on food, say that everyone should be thankful, then push and shove in Victoria Secret over a bra, of which you have ten or more? Or, was it worth it to battle through bodies and buy a TV at a hundred dollars saving?

I know some of you Black Friday shoppers are kind. And that every person just wants nice things for their families or theirselves at a good price. Maybe you can only afford certain items on sale, so these shopping days are important. Things are pretty tame in Canada but there is always the exception. And it’s just my point of view, but I wonder how being thankful and all this merchandising, advertising, and worked up shoppers fit together.

In Canada, we celebrate Boxing Day after Christmas. It’s origins lie in people boxing up their leftover food from Christmas meals for the poor. But instead, we shop with our gift cards and Christmas money for more of what we have, for stuff, instead of celebrating family and Jesus’ birth; instead of celebrating people being together. I just find it a bit difficult, putting Christmas and shopping hauls together. I still shop and I still celebrate with my family. But I try to remember that when I’m out buying merchandise there is a way to treat other shoppers with respect, not like they’re the competition. I remember that buying stuff is fun but only temporary. “You can’t take it with you when you go,” as the saying goes.Whether you can buy a lot of things or hardly afford any, in death we leave all our junk behind.  We need to remember that there  are people who can’t afford are grand celebrations at Thanksgivings and Christmas. We need to give money and our time to those in need. To give presents to kids whose parents can’t afford, or food to the family who can only go to the food bank.

I think if we were more thankful we could see how it is for some people to have so little, while we have a lot. For some people a tiny gift or a helping hand is worth so much. Little things like God, family, good friends, and health should matter the most. Without them all the ‘things’ in the world are worthless. So, be happy if that is what you have and if your basic needs are met. Happy Thanksgiving Americans and start of the holiday season for many of us. May you be thankful and gentle when you shop and generous with your time and donations to those less fortunate. May you cherish the life you have because you’re a priceless person to many people you know and loved very much.

The Happenings of A Woman in Autumn

Fall is one of my favourite times of year, especially this year with the beautiful twenty degree Celsius weather we are receiving in Alberta. I think back to previous years and I am positive I was already wearing a warm winter coat and high boots to walk through the snow. So, if we can just keep this up until December, I’d be happy.

This previous weekend was Canadian Thanksgiving, just like American Thanksgiving, without the Black Friday. My whole family was over at our house including my brothers, Nathan’s girlfriend, my Grandma, and some Asian friends of my Dad’s. Supper was good, I helped my mom as much as I could. Mom strives to make thanksgiving a healthy meal as much as possible. We still had turkey, perogies, cabbage rolls, and stuffing but we also had a healthy green salad with fruit and pecans, stir fried vegetables, and little baby potatoes in the ovan with a bit of olive oil and more vegetables. We also have to take into consideration that my Dad has to eat gluten-free. So, we have his most desired dessert, pumpkin pie with whipped cream and Dad just doesn’t eat the pie crust. I also managed to bake my Neiman-Marcus cookies where you blend the oatmeal into a powder. They are chocolate chip and pecan cookies. To save ourselves, my Mom and I sent all cookies home with my brothers.

I also had a fantastic time planning and taking part in a big dinner for my best lady pals at Earls Downtown. We were all seated around a big round wooden table so it was a tad hard to talk to everyone but I think I managed. I was just so happy every lady their made it out.

Sitting there I realized three of our group were moms of little children and everyone except me was married or had a serious boyfriend. This didn’t particularly bother me but I though about it later, although I miss have someone by your side, I was okay with just being single right now. After four years, it feels right for me to just focus on me and my health and getting that back to a place where I can go out more and also I would like to lose some weight. I miss seeing my good friends more than I do, but life happens and makes it harder to mesh your lives with those you would like to as often as you once did.

I talked to A, that was a big step. He is not mad or upset about what happened when we broke up and I’m glad. I think this was a good thing for us both to do.

I am also finally, able to concentrate and work on my class after a month of nothing working out. Just in time for the midterm I have notes, pictures of slides, and the textbook so I can study and do well on the midterm Tuesday afternoon. I was able to arrange the exam time for the day, rather, then at night with the class. Next project after this will be an essay on a display of pieces of furniture we might choose to do. I will have to get some research material for this project I think. I am so glad I can do the course from home. Although, I find art history extremely interesting so I would have liked to hear what the professor said about these furniture pieces we’re studying.

Next, week I have the midterm and a blowout and makeup at Icon the next day. It was a groupon I’d bought to use on my birthday, but since I was in hospital at that time I didn’t. I also hope to figure out what is making my teeth so acidic the enamel is disappearing, and to work on losing weight through these 7 minute workouts and healthy clean eating.

Take care,

Writing 201 – Found Poetry/Chaismus –  Saving Face

(The following is taken from Facebook posts and my own words)

Hysatirical, I laughed out loud; this is what courage looks like, not this  face it.

I was invigorated today as I seemed to fly over and down the mountain face, what a perfect time to stop and reflect on the gifts in my life.

Wearing the cosiest sweater, my pal Lemon stripes introduced me to it and I rub my skin softly against it, it whispers cashmere on my face.

For safety’s sake, travel in pairs; when you’re stressed float awhile; it doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do (some face saving advice from Noah’s Ark and the late Steve Jobs!)

None of us is getting out of here alive, so please  stop treating yourself like an after thought; you are the beauty of your face and your face makes you beautiful; be silly, be kind, be weird. There’s no time for anything else.

I am stressing about saving face for absolutely no logical reason; the kids living in today’s world  will never know this struggle.

The weapons that make us super heroes, just when you thought you’d seen it all, you haven’t seen it all because we have to face facts — you can’t really have faced it all.

On Friday, the First Day of advanced pills, 850 000 people voted — that’s a 90 % increase from 2008; they did it so can you, show your face go out and vote!!

Some people create their own storms, we have too much to be thankful for; is your soap doing you more harm then good? Face every challenge with grace, grace will help you face every challenge.

You felt he was better just because he gave you more. But he had two- hundred dollars, and all I had was ten. A river cuts through rock not because of it’s power but because of it’s persistence; when you go to face the world do not worry about how much power you have allotted be persistent and give generously.

Happy Thanksgiving One and All

It’s difficult to not write everyday now that the Writing 101 course is over. I had become use to being given an idea and then simply running with it for an hour or so each day. But now I am sitting in front of my laptop and it’s hard to come up with an idea to write about even though the point of the course for me in the beginning was to gain ideas for writing. But perhaps, that is my curse. I’ve been told that I’m very goal-oriented and great at completing my goals but not so great at making my goals in the first place.I think I will just need a brainstorming session where I can write down just any and every goal that comes to my mind. What about you how do you come up with ideas for blogs? Do you write from your own experiences, do you write fiction? I’d be interested to know.

But for now I will tell you about life lately and leave the brainstorming for later. Last week began by seeing my boyfriend finally, after his long trip to Morocco. I pretty much wouldn’t let him go once he came into my house and sat down on the couch. We talked a bit but I didn’t get to talk to him as much as I wanted until he took me out for dinner at Earls on Friday night. Everyone has there favorite meals at restaurants, the things they order over and over again. At Earls I have a few options I can choose from, my favorite being the Chicken-Apple Brie and Fig samwidge with a house salad. I always eat half and save the other half of this massive samwidge for lunch the next day. And I did the same thing on Friday but I was really craving chocolate after dinner and my boyfriend and I split (I had the most) a gelato and caramel nut sundae. It was divine, one scoop of vanilla, one scoop of chocolate, some candied pecans, and a little bowl of salty caramel sauce that I poured on the sundae frequently. I just love dessert sometimes and could just eat that. But I don’t order it too often because it’s usually too much to eat with a meal and drink as well as it’s fattening. Plus, A has decided he wants to keep of the 10 lbs he lost walking around Morocco and Europe, that way he will build muscle faster because he won’t have that fat in the way, not that he had any fat but that is just my opinion.

The rest of the weekend we spent preparing for a large Thanksgiving meal for Sunday.I cleaned my room well — vacuumed,

www.guylainounette.centerblog.net
http://www.guylainounette.centerblog.net

dusted, and wiped down everything — and frankly got too fatigued to do much more that day other than clean about half of my bathroom for Sunday ( I’ll have to clean the shower this week, at least no company goes in there so company cannot tell if it’s a bit dirty). On Sunday, I got ready and then helped my Mom cook the meal for the day. We had 13 people over for dinner, that’s a large party for my family. We had 4 of my Dad’s friends from China, both of my brothers, my one brother’s girlfriend, and my boyfriend A actually came over.

I was extremely impressed with A. He has been so frightened of my Dad he has staunchly refused to come over but he did come this time for a little while and ate supper with everybody, met my Dad, and brought my Mom flowers that she liked a lot. I hope I can get him to come again when my Dad doesn’t have so much company so that A can talk more to my Dad and become even more comfortable around my family. I think after 3-years it’s about time! But very proud of A all the same.

Back to dinner, my Mom and I cooked perogies, heated up cabbage rolls, cut up carrots and beans to be steamed, and my Mom baked a ham in the oven as well as a small turkey the night before. There was a chinese noodle salad and my brother’s girlfriend brought a pureed squash mixture. There was pumpkin pie and whipped cream for dessert, although dessert was very sweet.

After dinner and when everyone had left, I was quite tired and slept the rest of the afternoon, the next day, and most of yesterday. That’s called malaise — taking so long to recover after an occasion because you get to fatigued the day before or days before. Finally, today I feel as if I am normal again and maybe will catch up on some of my favorite TV shows online. Scandal (2 episodes) for one, Grey’s Anatomy, The Vampire Diaries, Once Upon a Time and if I have time, 2 new episodes of the Blacklist. But I’ve been slacking on the Blacklist so I might just leave that one until I can watch the entire season in the summer.

Also I signed up for Blogging 201 starting next week. I wanted to keep in the habit of writing everyday going and I also wanted to learn about some more complicated operations and ideas that can help a person blog. I didn’t take Blogging 101 but I know enough from figuring out WordPress that I think I’ll be okay. There is a Writing 201, long form writing, in December and so I will do that then. These courses were a very good idea just to keep me busy since I couldn’t do regular courses from a university lately. But Im quiet sure I will take a Lighting course in Winter to finish my Residential Design and receive my Certificate in May. Then I will be a Certified Interior decorator. But unfortunately, I don’t plan on using the designation or doing the job. I just want to finish the certificate. I’m still on disability after all.

So coming up in October/ November for sure a beauty haul from Sephora on Clinique (some of the regular products I use) and a couple of makeup products I am trying out from Benefit and Bobbi Brown. Can’t wait to write about those for you. As for the rest of my blogging ideas you’ll have to wait and see what I can come up with when I’m more awake.

Cheers!
