Greenwood’s The Angry Beaver quieted me as no place in town. It reminded me of home. Hockey was “the” sport and beavers were noble. The beer was imported Canadian — but not the moonshine most customers hid.

In Canada, we’re fond of beavers, and they’re no harmless rodent. Not when you’ve strode past their river valley dam with your curious dog. Alarmed beavers slap their tails, and snap their teeth. They swim as professional NHL’ers skate, and won’t think twice about fighting.

Danny, the bar owner’s Doberman, was never the same after a beaver ‘battle-royal’. A jersey was pulled over his head when the beaver dove with Danny into the lake. He headed for shore; had Danny fought, the beaver would’ve destroyed him. No OT necessary.

I blink awake to the lapping water as its tune resonates splashed against my skin, and when I gulp my protein shake; I breathe in liquid air and run. On the street-way cannel, the slide and slip of the tide is music, a rhythm I hum; I inhale the salt air as my sweat drips in the morning. I’m rounding the corner, acknowledging neighbors revving the engines of their boats for the cafes or market; I dive off the farthest dock and swim home — my morning training complete.

She’s a witch,

She burns and she twitches.

Fire glows, sparks raise, burn high into morn.

She doesn’t feel, because she’s real; she burns all day.

Clergy stoke fire, she doesn’t expire;

The rabble wish her pain —

She’s a witch.

But not finished her time,

For real spell-casters can’t be murdered.

They drowned her, she floated; they hung her, her neck snapped.

Then, when they untied her, she laughed;

Her neck clicked in place, her spine healed fast.

She’s a witch.

*****

She burns fields.

She’s not kind, far too real.

She misled children, gave everyone pox.

It wasn’t her plan, to be mean and vile –to kill;

But those ‘Holier-Than-Thou’ tortured —

Dismembered her family —

Powerless.

They untouched with dark arts.

And all those woman not real villains,

Masked in their veins wasn’t witchcraft or evil brews.

Perhaps, they were too pretty, too —

Wealthy; had much power.

Then, she flipped.

***

She’s truly —

A witch; they made her one.

They buried her alive, let her sink,

Chocking in the putrid river with their repulsive waste.

She’s seen the flesh on innocents burn crisp;

The crackle of their hair.

Tied as she,

On a pier, with hellfire;

To destroy her vengeance, her wrathful ways.

She’s evil, sins with peasants, priests, their hateful hearts.

Cursing their Lords, besieging her home;

Survives fire, lives to smite,

Twisted witch.

Notable Quotes: November 2017 Part One #quotes #pinterest

Another half of month gone by, wasn’t it just Halloween? I think between projects, family, friends, other stuff, and my growing pile of stories and poetry I want to work on, it’s easy to become lost in everything. It’s important to stay grounded In life and to understand that your stressors and issues are yours to bear with help and that others too are going through life events and problems that are overwhelming for them.

I miss being younger and carefree and having the ability to eventually finish my To – Do lists. I miss doing more creative fiction and blogging more but with project writing, other things going on, and my creative writing projects that require off-blog work, lately it’s been hard to keep up. Frankly, those off-blog pieces are met with little energy at the end of the day but I’m trying to keep up with a poem or two every couple of days and hopefully will return to some semblance of a blog schedule in December.

Nevertheless, there is power in words to lift us up, find balance, and find healing too. Enjoy!

Saturday Mix: Poem – Alouette – ” Waterways, Rubies, and Light”  #saturdaymix #poetry #dVerse

Thanks to Sarah of Weejars on MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting Saturday Mix. Here theme as ben homophones and this week’s homephones are: straight – not crooked, strait – narrow waterway, and discussed – talked about, and disgust – sickening. I’m combining Sarah’s Prompt with Lillian from #dVerse Poet’s Pub birthstone Prompt. My birthstone or a ruby from July.

——

Credit: Jeremy Bishop via Unsplash

—-

Roads aren’t all straight

They’ve crooked places.

Thin trails where water travels,

Areas you trip, fall.

Afraid to be mauled,

Waterways fast cause rabble.

—-

Trapped at a strait

Sharp-toothed bears await,

For you to give in and cry;

Say, “Life isn’t fair,

And you weren’t aware,

Of suffering,” safety’s lie.

——

Waters bring life, save,

They can also enslave

Us within straits to suffering,

You’ll drink fresh water,

You’ll can drown, falter.

But often, whirlpool’s they bluff

——

Your mind discusses

Escapes; swim through roughs.

Don’t permit whirlpool’s giant waves —

Their narrow streams ire.

Hard days don’t linger,

Swim for your life, you’ll escape

——

Many times we see,

What we think, believe —

Is an end, ’cause beginnings —

They disguise themselves,

Self disgust us tells.

We’ve not an ending, so swim.

——-

We can fight despite,

Life’s times of great spite.

We are survivors living,

To see another year.

Monthly birthstone here —

Once more; rubies mark swimming —

—–

Through, surviving dark.

Bright vivid lights hark.

Another year not unfulfilled.

A year we that we thrived,

Sadness subsiding.

With Ruby’s energy, strong will.

——–

Tres on through life’s thin,

Narrow straits to swim,

In glorious lakes and oceans.

In heat of hot springs.

As life always brings —

Light; healing not to bemoan.

——

“The Alouette, created by Jan Turner, consists of two or more stanzas of 6 lines each, with the following set rules: Meter: 5, 5, 7, 5, 5, 7 and Rhyme Scheme: a, a, b, c, c, b.”

Photo Challenge/ Saturday Mix: Poem – Octelles – “Never Broken” #amwriting #photochallenge #poetry #saturdaymix

(“Not Broken” – Sarah Ross – no lyrics of video available but bases for the poem).

——–

You hit me with iron fists, no time to pause;

You hit me hard, but I’ve wicked claws.

Keep firing the bullets but my heart’s ice,

Teflone protects from apathetic spite.

Try to flee, escape being so involved.

Your rafts near the edge, your facing the falls.

I’m here still, wrapped safely in healing gauze,

Bandaged wounds, not broken yet but so appalled.

——

You’re a fake, soulless, not a person, symbolic —

Of times that ache you snidely taunted, grinned,

Thinking you’ve shattered me but I’ve broad wings,

I’m not afraid though shots ring and fists swing.

I punch hard, I’ve come this far, I’m not broken

So laugh — guffaw, fist’s raw, first shot’s token.

My knuckles are torn and eyes narrowed slits,

You aim low, for you I’m not nostalgic.

—-

You give and you take, pain you’ll not revoke,

I smiled told you once more — I’m still not broken

Brass knuckles glint in daylight’s warmth,

Think the light fools me? Im trained well to swarm

Push back tough kick against ominious storm

I won’t drown, I swim, even when life’s deformed.

You hit me hard, I’ve come so far, not joking,

Words flying fast shouting, “I’m not broken.”

——

Rain pours strong, the river’s harsh pull has might;

Life’s a struggle, I’ve swam this far, I’m feisty.

You hit me hard, I’ll hit back; swollen lips,

Fists raised, not broken since our final kiss.

You’ll not shake my wings in flight, or tear them,

My feathers eagles gifted, they won’t rend

When they’re ruffled, mussed, my wings hold on strong,

Natural elegance never broken long.

—–

You struck me hard, watched me fall, gave bruises,

In the end, you’re the dunce who is confused.

I’ve come this far, I’ve the light of lights

His candle guiding me now as I write.

I’d fight physically but words have more bite —

I’m not broken, words all true, my respite.

You try to force your rule, your edicts fire lights.

I’m not broken, when I must I’ll fight.

Day 9 – NaPoWriMo/A to Z Challenge/100 Word Wednesday: Poem – Ninefold – “The Fight for Air” #NaPoWriMo #AtoZchallenge #poetry #amwriting #100WordWednesday

Today’s NaPoWriMo challenge is a nine line poem of any form. For A to Z Challenge were looking for a GoidReads quote beginning with the letter H (first or last name) and the picture below comes from Bikurgurl for #100WordWednesday.

——–

I can’t say what my first thought was as I sunk below the surface, because it was mostly a string of four-letter words” —Rachel Hawkins

——-

I’ve always been scared to swim in lakes,

Who knows, what’s creeping below?

Something skims my leg, I shriek loudly.

Yet I wonder if I’m feeling fish,

Or if I’m imagining some creature,

Whose bite, takes me below the surface.

Then I’m struggling, lunging for air,

If only I can make it towards —

Luminious eternity shocks.

Sunday Photo Fiction: Poem – Wrapped Refrain (1) – “The End of The Dock” #amwriting #poetry #flashfiction #mentalhealth

——–

At the end of the dock, will she find —

Her own end? Will she find a kind —

Soul who wants to save a lost one?

There’s nothing new under the sun,

She doesn’t want to reach the dock’s ledge to jump —

Into water, to drown, heart ceasing its thumping.

——–

No one thinks they could reach this point,

No one sees beyond their own point.

Blind to the sad, anxious hoping,

Someone will throw her a life rope.

If she knew how to swim, maybe she could fight back?

Maybe she could cling to life even when attacked?

—–

She’s no superheroe who’s bent,

On killing her nemesis.

Her demons struggle within hid,

She keeps them sealed under tight lid.

Support her, help her, light the shadow of the lost,

No one knows when she cries, it’s not easy to stop.

—–

Waves inside her — tempestuous

They’re crippling waves, regardless

Beyond her sadness, waking up,

Worse than ignorance unjust.

Your lack of thought, with no empathy — she’s pleading,

You don’t try to learn or listen, she keeps bleeding.

——-

She said,”Not to judge a book by —

It’s pretty cover, how it looks.”

She pleads, “Listen to Atticus,

Walk around in my skin,” pick —

Wisely how you react; she’s scared of descending,

At the end of the dock, desperate to not be.

——

Lush trees surround me, green and verdant, as I walk out to the lake for a swim. I’ve been doing this for years now, swimming up to the buoys and back, twenty laps every morning.

When I’m on my last lap I notice the usual small boat not far from the buoy and behind it a rowboat. The larger boat appears deserted and I feel my self begin to sweat despite the warm water.

I decide to swim closer to the large boat but then the shock of a sudden explosion on the sinking ship has me diving underwater, swimming quickly to avoid the debree. Coming up onto the water’s surface only a tip of the vessel shows as its final resting place becomes the bottom of the lake.

The following morning I come to swim and there are police and rescue volunteers sweeping the water. This ship was a home for a grizzled man and his wife Stephanie. Somehow she survived the ship’s explosion untouched while her husband died.

Stephanie meets me later at home. I’ve been looking after her for years, protecting her from an abusive husband. We smile and she kisses my lips, “Jack, I can’t believe it worked; I’m free.”
