Jewel studied herself in the mirror, envious of her sister, Luna, who prepared for the party behind her.
She sighed as she stared at the dress her mother bought her; it was child-like. Jewel peered at Luna and her white freckle-less complexion. Instead of having lustrous golden-hair, Jewel was cursed with her grandfather’s ginger mane and speckled skin. I’ll never be a counterweight to Luna or those mean girls in my class.
Luna had style, while Jewel’s clothes were drab. The outfits her mother insisted she wear wouldn’t qualify as trendy. Emilia, had no eye for colors that corresponded to her daughter’s skin tone and hair. All Jewel wanted was to dress as fashionably as other girls.
She believed she was thewless compared to Luna, who shoved her aside, acting playful. She twirled her red gown in front of the mirror, and Luna’s skirt revolved around her perfect hips.
Jewel frowned. She was jealous of her sister. The pressure of living up to Luna’s elegance, and thinking about her mother’s treatment made Jewel’s head spin and her lungs constrict. She gasped for air and her heart beat sped. Luna noticed Jewel’s breathing and rubbed her back.
She was the only person who knew how much Luna despised her own appearance. “What’s wrong, Sis? Having anxiety? Relax, it will be fine. I left the mean girls from your class off the guest list.” Jewels chest and and hands unclenched.
“I keep telling you, you’re sixteen and you’ll grow into your beauty soon. Don’t let mother’s expectations bother you or those *itches from school. When I was in your grade, mean girls hated me too.”
Jewel nodded as the rest of her body calmed. “You keep telling me that my awkward stage is finite. But, I’ve always been gangly and plain.”
Luna smirked and grabbed Jewel’s hand as they sat on the bed. “No, you were a cute kid. Everyone thought so, and you’ll be a beautiful woman soon. You’re a late bloomer. Soon you’ll have boobs that rival those *itches in your class. Guys have a thing for red-heads, you know.”
“Mine’s ginger, not red.”
Luna squeezed her hand. “You’re beautiful as you’re are now. But I can’t make you see that. You have to believe that inside.” Jewel closed her eyes. She wished Luna’s words were true.
“You can’t keep postponing all of father’s parties or he’ll get mad again. One day you’ll believe you’re as gorgeous as I think you are. None of the women in our family are ugly or plain.”
Jewel shrugged. “I’m not ready, yet. Tell dad I’ll be fifteen minutes.” Luna hurried towards her door then halted.
She turned around and clasped her hands. “Jewel, wear one of my dresses. I have one that would be gorgeous on you. It’s not as trendy as the one you have, but the emerald green will highlight your hair and complexion well; your svelte figure too.”
Luna grinned and nodded. “I’ll talk to mom about letting me shop with you. Then, you and I can choose the clothes you like to wear. Mom can’t dress you like a twelve-year old forever.”
Jewel scrambled to Luna’s closet. She yanked out the emerald dress. “This one?”
“You bet. I always thought the color suited you better. You’ve got deasil, Jewel. Many excellent qualities on the outside and on the inside too; don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.”
Luna left and Jewel tore off her muted gown and slipped on the emerald silk dress. She zipped it up and was shocked to discover the shade made her skin glow. It complemented her hair too.
Her shoulders were bared and ruching at her chest enhanced Jewel’s cleavage. A bow on the gown sat above her bottom. To her delight, the dress was tight and ended mid-thigh.
Jewel grinned and borrowed a pair of her sisters heels. She flounced down the stairs. For once, was excited to attend one of her father’s parties. She couldn’t wait to see the expression on her mother’s face.
It was years ago that I found this litograph of Emma made from the words of the Jane Austen novel. Moreover, Jane Austen is arguably one of most loved Victorian authors. Additionally, Emma’s litograph poster was most appealing to me due to its colors. The poster I chose was in baby blue and light-gray and is a focal point on the picture wall of my bedroom.
When I thought about how I would design this picture wall, I knew I wanted the artwork to be authentic and not the average prints you find in many design stores: hence, I chose the lithograph poster and prints of artwork mainly from Etsy.com. On Etsy, the artists are not mainstream. As well, I used smaller prints, mostly 8.5″ x 11″ to go around the large Emma litograph to achieve balance in my design.
Furthermore, when I chose my Emma poster, I was able to choose the colors I wanted my lithograph to be from several options. There are a larger variety of color combinations available online for this specific style of Emma poster. As well, you can buy this litograph poster matted in the 12″ x 16″ size.
When I purchased the litograph years ago, matting was not an option. I decided to go with the poster that was the largest size, 42″ x 63″ because I was using the poster as my picture wall focal point. Also, only the largest size contains the full text of Emma on the litograph including all “157, 422 words” from the novel.
The litographs website has a variety of t-shirts, posters, totes, and scarves of your most beloved literary works. There are a plethora of options for posters for example. You can also choose literary items that aren’t litographs but are based off your favorite literary works.
To frame my poster I went to the craft store Michaels and bought the largest silver poster frame I could find. I use silver in my bedroom as it goes well with my light blue walls. I brought the poster with me to ensure it fit the frame. I loved the look of the poster with the silver as opposed to black or white poster frames. The silver and gray in the litograph matched.
As well, when I began to purchase smaller prints of artwork to surround my Emma litograph, I purchased frames of the 11″ x 14″ size to fit prints that were 8″ x 11″. I found these frames at Winners and/or HomeSense stores in Canada. What I love about both of these stores, is that you can find many decor items for your home at a reduced price that are still stylish and often brand names.
My goal was to have artwork and frames that were more eclectic so the frames and prints were not all the same. Shopping at Winners and HomeSense lent itself well to this as they have a variety of frames in all colors available.
Additionally, having diverse frames and artwork styles made my wall of artwork more interesting. Since my walls are painted a cool light blue, frames of white, black, and silver all matched the paint color well and were cohesive. Black frames on their own, even silver frames on their own, would have been too overpowering in a small bedroom.
The shop is on break right now, but I recommend checking out their excellent hand made prints. I love how the black frames make the sterling silver images pop, even though the inside of the frames are more of a white-ivory tint. Also, I was pleased to be able to find prints that were glamorous, stylish, and feminine.
Furthermore, one my favorite items on my picture wall, is not a picture at all; in fact, it is a spice rack purchased from Modcloth.com in their Vintage Inspired Home Decor and Gift section. The spice rack is a pretty place to store and display my perfume bottles. I’ve also been able to display a few of my favorite cuffs (bracelets). Instead of displaying bracelets or cuffs you could also hang necklaces.
Moreover, I have not seen this spice rack (perfume display), on Modcloth.com for awhile. But ModCloth does have other interesting decor items if you enjoy a Vintage Style. As well, you can find similar spice racks at Walmart and Amazon , but I wasn’t able to find the same one in white, with hooks on the bottom. Your best bet is to explore the web or a store such as Bed, Bath, and Beyond, to find a spice rack that works well to display perfume and jewelry.
In addition, I purchased a couple prints off of Etsy.com from an artist’a shop called Lauren Bolshakov Art . I was thrilled to find more feminine and stylish pieces that added brighter color to my picture wall.
The first print is in the same color family of blues and greens as much of my bedroom. It’s an 8″ x 10″ size and called Vintage Dress Painting. It’s not available anymore but she has some other beautiful pieces of watercolor work.
The second print I purchased from Lauren was called Red Red Wine (see below) and the bright color of the red wine and the movement within the watercolor print drew me to it. Both prints I chose went well with slightly different white frames I found at Winners, in an 11″ x 14″ size because they had to be big enough for 8.5″ x 11″ prints. The red wine print is also a bright pop of color on my picture wall, which I adore.
As well, I did purchase a print (and later a frame) of a lovely print from a blogger I follow, Kelly Van from Le Zoe Musings, which is a “creative lifestyle blog.” Kelly no longer has an Etsy shop but her printing sayinging to ‘Just Breathe and Drink Tea’ was relaxing and cute. Also it’s in a reddish-pink shade.
One last painting (or a copy of a painting) I bought because I loved the impressionist feel to it, was from a shop called Prebrulee.com. The pop of pinkish-red in the painting, ties in with the red wine and tea prints. They all share an accent color on an otherwise serene picture wall and waveguide bedroom in general.
Prebrulee is a neat store that has a great deal of fun jewelry, clothing, stationary, and sometimes, home decor. Their Home and Office Section often has need collectibles, however, I’ve not seen paintings on the website in a long while.
My final framed work around my Emma litograph is my university diploma which I am extremely proud of; nevertheless, I’m searching for the right picture to replace it with, and move my diploma to my home office space.
Finally, I do have a few items on my dresser. As well, I painted both dressers in my room seal gray to match the Emma Litograph. The dresser items, however, are from HomeSense, Winners, and a variety of other decor stores. I find it’s a matter of knowing what you want to display in areas of your home, such as your bedroom, and waiting until you come across the perfect items that are both practical and beautiful.
In addition, if you’re searching for some help in designing your own house or a particular room in your home, such as your bedroom, I encourage you to take a look a theHavenly website for actual Interior Design expertise.
Take their design quiz to determine the decor styles you like best, then choose an interior designer who best matches the decor style for a specific room.
You can receive interior designer aid through a Design Quickie option for free. This provides you a small amount of help in designing a space in your home. It includes a 30 minutes chat session with an interior designer, product recommendations, style advice, and a concierge buying service.
As well you can consider A Havely Mini including 3 initial designs, 1 design concept, 1 design revision, a curated design list, 1-2 weeks of design time, a concierge buying service, and 2-weeks of post design support.
Your third option is the Havenly Full adding on 4-weeks of design support (instead of 2-weeks), 3D Room Visualisation, and a Floor plan, along with everything you receive in the Havely mini.
I would recommend the third option as it provides you with the best value for your money. 3D Room Visualisation and floor plans are incredibly helpful in decorating a room in your home as ‘visuals’ always give a person a better idea of what their decor scheme will look like in the end.
Nonetheless, if you’ve knowledge of how to design a floor plan and can easily visualize how your final design will appear, the second option is also great.
See you next time and thanks for stopping by today’s special post!
Prompt: Tell us about the one luxury item you wish you could afford, in as much detail as you can. Paint a picture for us.
If there was an item of luxury that I could have… it would be hard to choose because there are things that are meaningful in various ways. Even the term ‘luxury’ can be debated. What’s luxury to me, may be only normal with someone who is used to having more money to spend. Or what I might have in my life right now might be very luxurious to someone who can hardly make ends meet and has to eat poorly and shop at the thrift store.
So here are my little list of luxuries I’d like to have:
1. A thick black Chanel wool coat that is cut to highlight the curves of a woman’s body but is made in away that it’s style is timeless and will fit me all my life. The wool does not pill and the coat is soft and comfortable. When I’m eighty-five years old this coat will still look good on me and still be quality vintage Chanel. This coat is thick enough that I can wear it when it’s minus thirty degrees Celsius outside (with a sweater) but thin enough I can pull it on in the fall and the coat is not to bulky. It should be classic couture.
2. My own luxury condo situated in or by the new ice district in downtown Edmonton. It will be a two-bedroom unit with a large master bedroom with a walk in closet by California closets with places to hang all my clothes winter/spring/summer/fall. It will have places to put my nice dress shoes, my high boots that I wear in Winter and Fall, and all my other flats, runners, sandals, booties etc. It will be a completely outfitted closet with drawers for lingerie, scarves, jewelry, sunglasses and many other accessories drawers. There will be a tall window in my closet so I can see how outfits look in natural light and a chase lounge to sit on or throw shirts on. Also, I will need a large unique mirror on one of the smaller walls.
In the bedroom will be a little sitting area next to a window where I can read on my IPad and study. The room will be painted light blue and feel cool, airy, and elegant. There is a king size bed that is so comfortable and sheets that are a soft cotton, duvets, and pillows that can be interchanged. There is a good sized his closet.
There is also a Master bath with a large tub, a glass tiled shower that is tall and double the size of a normal shower with a wooden bench. Their will be double sinks with lots or storage underneath with drawers for tiolatries and shelves for towels. Their will be a toilet that is a water closet. Of importance will be a dressing table (vanity) with a large mirror and much space for makeup, haircare, and appliances. The vanity is antique but repurposed. I would like a lot of the wood furniture to be painted and repurposed as this also environmentally friendly.
The house will have a kitchen with a bar that seats about six. It will have a lot of counter space and all the necessary appliances in white and light blue dishes with coordinating colors. I will have everyday dishes and some good dishes and bowls to make food in and present food nicely. There will be a cupboard only for food with lots of shelves which aren’t too deep. The sink will be a double sink with a faucet that is connected by a hose to come out and spray extra dirty dishes. And there will be enough space for two bodies to move and work in the kitchen btw every surface.
There will be an open dining and living room area. There will be large fluffy coaches that are still sleek and stylish. There is a lot of light from windows and tastefully done lighting throughout the condo. The floors will be wood, I think dark but not black and we will have some carpets over top of the wood floor in the living and dining areas. The dining table is large rectangular wood and painted white and all the rooms in the house are warm and inviting. Their are many pieces of colourful and meaningful art work all through out the condo. Some of it is expensive and some of it is not. It is artwork me and my guy chose for whatever reason.
At the dining table are comfortable chairs that can be reapholstered if I want in years to come. There is a classic Chandelier above the table. And somewhere in the living room is a well stocked bar cart. And there is space to put wine glasses for white and red wine, champagne, martinis, and water.
There is a large flat screen TV above a fireplace that is only for show. One of those electric ones. There are blankets and a few pillows on the couches so you can settle down at night and watch the hockey game or your favorite show. There is a patio outside the living room and patio doors which let in a lot of light. The patio fits a small patio set with comfortable chairs and one of those patio tables you can light a fire in. There is space for a BBQ on the patio.
The second bedroom is lovely with an adjoining bathroom with double sinks, a glass shower, and a tub. It has a queen size bed and crisp sheets and a warm duvet. The colors are warm and spa like. There is a small sitting area guests can sit and read or watch a small TV and a decent sized walkin closet.
There is also lots of closets throughout the condo for storage of various items. There is a good size armour for coat storage in the entrance and a bench you can sit down on to take off your shoes.
The condo is modern, yet timeless taking in old elements of style and making them in a new way. The whole style is relaxing and not too cluttered. It is cleaned by a maid once a week 🙂
3. I want to go on a vacation to Europe and stay in five star hotels with good food and a nice gym area.I want to go to France to Paris, Niece, Lion, and Capri. I want to visit Tuscany and some of it’s fruit and vinyards. I want to shop in Paris and see the Louvre a few times, and go a little ways up the Eiffle tower, not all. I want to eat at cafes and have tea and croissants. I want to dress up for dinner and try some French cuisine but no snails, fish or anything too weird. I want to travel with someone I love.
Spain would be nice to rent a villa for a week out on the white sand beaches and to experience Spanish culture in a couple of cities, Madrid and Barcelona. I want to visit Enfland and Ireland. Just the two capital cities, London and Dublin. I want to find out where my Great Grandparents were from in England. I want to go to churches and Abbeys, and Castles. I especially want to go to Westminister Abbey.
I want to go to Germany and Austria. I want to see where soldiers fought in wars and the devestation of a concentration camp, so I can always remind myself to never forget how horrible humans can be, and remind others too. I want to go where the Reformation occurred led by Martin Luther and John Calvin in Wittenburg. See Berlin and Frsnkfurt. And go where my family comes from in Leipzig.
Then I want to travel to Italy and see Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, and Pompeii. I want to see many historical buildings and art works. I would like to go to the Opera somewhere and I would like to shop. I would like to take in Italian culture. And lastly, I would like to go to Greece to Athens and Thessaloniki. I would love to see the ruins of Ancient Greece and Rome. I would like to go to the beach and take a boat trip on the blue water. Maybe this trip would be about six months I think.
4. I would like to be able to share or have a driver who would drive me around where I needed to go and my Mom too because she hates driving. He could drive a nice black BMW or an Audi.
5. Perfect skin and teeth.
6. I’d give this all up if I could be healthy. If I could not have mental illness or chronic fatigue. If I could think clearly and not wear out so fast. If I could not forget little things I now forget. If I could be fit and a healthy and able to take care of myself. This is a luxury worth infinitely more then anything I have described.
