MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie

——-

Alice was home from school. She hated boarding school, but she hadn’t had a choice. Her father had insisted his daughter have the best education a girl could have. This meant school was not merely academics as it was for boys. Her boarding school was an all girls boarding school and a great deal of focus was put into “the finishing school” aspect of education for women.

She needed to learn how to be a proper hostess and wife; those were the ideals of the Victorian woman. She needed to be the angel in the house, the moral compass of her household.

Alice spent countless classes based on the proper religion for an English girl. The God her school taught about, was an an angry God; judgemental and all powerful. He didn’t seem particularly forgiving. But she was told doing her duty as woman would make God happy.

Alice and her best friends Margaret and Prudence, often liked to cause trouble. They played tricks and sometimes skipped their more tedious classes. The girls were often punished with rulers smacking their hands soundly until they couldn’t feel them. Or writing lines of verses from The Bible until their fingers were too numb to write or days.

All in all, the school couldn’t punish Alice and her friends how the would’ve punished other girls. Her and her friends were daughters of enomoreous patrons of the girl’s school.

That being said, Alice was excited to go home for the summer. She thought fondly of her childhood, her dreams that always wandered to her childhood fantasy world Wonderland.

——

When the carriage dropped her off, Alice approached her home with a bit of trepidation. Her mother had been angry she had left flowers all over the headmasters office. The man had almost had a heart attack and Alice had laughed and laughed when she heard what he discovered. Bringing her suitcase with her, she opened the front door.

Suddenly, the house started to move in various directions from the front entrance.  Staircases opened from every way, along with doors leading to God knows where.

Alice had a peculiar feeling, she was travelling back to her childhood world. Staircases continued to rumble and groan as they moved. Leaving her suitcase, Alice jumped onto a staircase leading to a familiar giant golden door knob with a large decorated keyhole underneath.

Suddenly, the door knob sneezed. “You again. I thought I’d seen the last of you.”

“Pardon me?”

“Alice, yes? I remember. I had a cold last time you were here too; although, you’ve grown since then. Thinned out too, you were a bit fat for awhile, all that bread.”

She gasped, “Excuse me, the ideal woman these days, has a round body with childbearing hips, my teachers told me and my mother agrees. And you aren’t even real. I’m dreaming.”

“I wish the staircases would stop moving and the rest of the house weren’t so confusing. I have no idea where to go and I really was looking forward to a nap, ” Alice complained.

The giant door knob sneezed again. “No Alice, I know you and you know me. You know us all. It’s been a while and you’ve blocked us out. We tried to visit, but you convinced yourself we were all childhood dreams, despite having been to Wonderland twice.”

“You do play delightful tricks at school, I must say –you, Margaret, and Prudence. You should’ve brought them along . . . Then again, they wouldn’t believe Wonderland is real either. They don’t believe in magic, but you do. Oh, you deny it Alice but you do believe. You wouldn’t be back here if you didn’t,” the door knob lectured.

Alice stomped her foot, “You’re not real.”

“I am indeed, open me. Better yet, have some of that bread you like so much, in your left pocket first; it should do the trick.”

She gasped and frowned when she put her hand in her pocket and found the delicious bread. She nibbled on the edge. Alice hadn’t realized how hungry she was. She took a bigger bite of bread and sighed with pleasure.

“Not too much,” the door knob cautioned. She sniffed and raised her nose at him; she had shrunk in size considerably. Carefully, Alice turned the icky runny door knob nose, she needed no key. She stepped into another world; wiping her hands on her skirt, before gazing up in shock.

—–

Alice truly was in the Wonderland of her youth. It appeared to be the same as she dreamt it to be. A path lay in front of her and she saw her body had become small. The grass and foliage around Alice was lush and towered over her.

She started to think of her old Wonderland friends when she came upon a catapillar on a large mushroom.”But you’re a butterfly now,” she said to the catapillar without thinking.

The catapiller sniffed at her and took a long drag from his hookah. “Who are you? Have you figured it out yet? Time does pass. My great-grandfather spoke of you. Time doesn’t move so fast here. He’s out flying about and I’m waiting until I can fly too. Why have you returned?”

Alice blinked rapidly. “I don’t know. I went through a doorway talked to a door knob, shrank, and now I’m here. It’s not a dream is it?”

The catapullar laughed, taking another drag. “I assure you. It’s all quite real. There’s a pathway going that way,” he pointed to his right. “You should go there. It leads somewhere important.”

“I see it’s a dock and we’re below it. It’s so large. Should I go below it in the sand? Or should I grow larger and go ontop of the dock. It’s quite big when you’re only six-inches tall.”

The catapillar laughed,  inhaling his hookah promptly after . “There you go insulting those of us only six-inches tall again. Do you have bread in your pocket to grow taller?”

Alice searched in her right pocket, “No bread but I think the mushroom you are laying upon has one side which will make me larger. Alice ate of one side which made her shrink more, than climbed up the mushroom to eat off the other side. She grew until she was her normal size again.

“Curious and curiouser,” she said. “This is all too familiar. I hope there’s no seagull who thinks I’m a serphant ready to eat her young.”

“You can say that again,” the catapillar said smirking. He bowed his head as Alice walked off, having shoved a piece of mushroom in her right pocket for future use.

She walked ontop of the dock until there was nothing but a short stairwell leading to a row boat in the sea. She recalled this moment in her second journey to Wonderland. But there should be a sheep somewhere she reasoned.

On que a sheep appeared and they both rowed off into the sea, but it wasn’t really a sea. Alice thought it was more like a river. The sheep said: “Bahhh,” then smiled at Alice.”Hello Alice have you learned to feather yet?”

“Oh, that’s a rowing term. I understand now. Same with catching a crab. I was so young then, sheep. I reached for those rushes remember? They’re still look and smell lovely. You can never catch the most beautiful ones, they are free.”

The sheep bleated and sighed. “Do you ever think, Alice, that beauty is not meant to be tamed or kept?”

“It’s a curious question coming from a sheep. But I think beauty should be left to exist and shine. You’re saying I should leave the lovely smelling rushes alone?” Alice asked.

The sheep sighed again. “I’m not talking about rushes. You should pay attention Alice. That school you go to and those Victorian norms and rules of society, do you think they’re all correct? Do you believe everything you are taught without question?”

Alice wrinkled her forehead and thought. “No not really. My bestfriends don’t either. It’s why we play tricks, skip classes, it’s why I sit in class bored. I do not want to be a proper woman, a tamed or kept Victorian housewife with her brood of children. I don’t want to think God is always angry and mean; I think he’s benevolent too.”

“Ah, I didn’t think you agreed with your education. I think in the future things will be better, only wait and don’t grow-up too much. Don’t forget Wonderland –we’ll see you when you dream. We need your wildness, Alice.”The sheep bleated again and Alice instantly, woke up.

She was riding in a carriage to her house for summer vacation. She attempted to remember her dreams. Alice swore she dreamt of Wonderland vividly. But all she could remember was a sheep telling her to stay wild and untamed. She grinned thinking of the tricks she played at school. She wasn’t a tame women yet; never if she had her way.

Writing 101: Fiction – Part 3 – After the Plane Crash #everydayinspiration

Today’s Writing 101 prompt is to write on a Tweet. Here’s the Tweet I chose: Twitter Quote

Please read part 2 here.

“I’m fine,” I tell Eric trapped in the shower. “Can I have a little privacy. I was only relaxing, the hot shower feels good on my body. I was dirty and sore.”

“I can understand that,” Eric said. “I was scared you’d hurt yourself on the way to the bathroom. Aunt Tabitha said you were weak and hadn’t even sat up in bed yet.”

“I’m good,” I say awkwardly still trying to cover my nakedness. I don’t know why I bothered. Eric didn’t seem to care I was naked, only that I hadn’t hurt myself.

“Walking was fine, I managed. I couldn’t leave my hair in the state it was in any longer.”

Eric chuckled and he opened a tall cupboard in the bathroom removing an oversized plush pale blue towel and a smaller towel as well. He hung them over the glass shower. I was happy the glass wasn’t completely see through due to the steam from the shower.

“Thanks,” I told Eric, grabbing both towels and immediately wrapping myself in the larger one. I arranged my dripping locks into a twist in the smaller towel.

Slowly, I opened up the shower door and slipped out. Eric was staring at me with bright jade green eyes. A half smile curved his lips when he took in my appearance.

“You seem better. The shower helped a great deal.” Eric surmised, ” Aunt Tabitha had an appointment in the city, so she couldn’t be here. Turns out it was a good day for her to be away since you have your strength back . . . Do you think you could tell me your name now?”

I blushed for some reason, looking down at my feet. I needed a pedicure I thought before peering back at Eric.

“I’m Ashlyn Howard,” I say shyly. I hold onto my towel with one hand and offer Eric my other hand.

Amused, he carefully takes my smaller hand in his and shakes it gently. His hand is rough and as our eyes met, I feel a spark, a sensation between us I wasn’t expecting.

“I’m Eric, but you already knew that Ashlyn. We tried many times to find out your name in order to contact your family this week. But you were always so out of it. I couldn’t find your wallet or ID in your back pack.”

“Yeah, I felt caught between waking up in this room feeling awful seeing your Aunt Tabitha watching me, and then I would dream again about my friend and the crash . ..” I explained. “I should try and get in touch with my family as soon as it’s possible.”

Eric nodded.”There’s no wifi or internet out here I’m afraid. No cell towers or landline. I have a few satellite phones and that’s about it. We can call your parents after you’ve had a chance to change and rest. Do you have a boyfriend you want to call too, a husband?”

“Um, no I’m single,” I say blushing. Eric smiles a at me. I feel comfortable around Eric I realize,  as if I weren’t standing outside the bathroom wrapped in towels.

“I heard about the crash. It was in the news papers. I don’t know how you survived two weeks out in the wilderness. You lost a good bit of weight I think and you fainted on my doorstep from hunger and lack of sleep.” Eric explained.

” I remember. Your PA greeted me and I had nothing in me left. Is it true you manufactur hemp products and sell weed for medical usage?”

Eric laughed. “Um, mostly that is what I do. I have a license to sell marajauna for medical purposes from the Canadian government. Our weed is top quality. So are the other products we sell made from hemp. A beauty line and some other things.”

Eric changed the subject.” You need some clothes that fit. I had Aunt Tabitha order you some. She has some daughters about your age so she knew what to buy.” Eric remarked, opening a bleached wooden wardrobe filled with clothes.

“There’s bath stuff and cosmetics in the bathroom as you probably saw.” I gasped, noticing on the price tags of some of the clothes, that they were expensive. Hundreds of dollars and more. I wondered why Eric was being so nice to me.

I glanced at Eric, able to look my fill as he stared out the window for a moment. Eric was hot. Dark brown hair cut in the latest short style, mussed as he ran his hand through it.

His jade green eyes were beguiling and a he had a wide smile made with sultry lips. His jaw was strong and angular and he seemed to have forgotten to shave today.

Eric wore dark relaxed jeans, rips in the knees, and a fitted Lecoste golf shirt. Underneath, I knew he was built.

Eric noticed me checking him out and smiled at me. I flushed red and he laughed.”It’s good to meet you Ashyln. I was worried you would die, your fever and sickness were quite bad the doctor told us. It was lucky you found my place when you did.. . Do you need help changing into your clothes? Your wrist is sprained and I know you’re covered in bruises from the shower so . ..”

“You looked!” I accused Eric. He only grinned.

“You left the bathroom door open and the shower was glass. How could I not look?”

” You could’ve pretended not to.”

“Don’t be embarrassed you’re beautiful. Even if you’re a bit skinny right now,” Eric said laughing.

He was teasing me, trying to make light of the situation. I blushed at his praise peering up at him and for a moment my dark eyes caught his jade ones and locked in place.

The air between us sizzled and Eric stepped towards me, brushing a long wet strand of my hair behind my ear. My breathing increased, my body ignited. Heat spread everywhere as Eric cupped my face and ran his thumbs over my cheeks.

I could smell him, a light woodsy citrus scent and man, together overpowering my senses. His mouth hovered closer, I couldn’t breathe. His breathe was warm on my cheek his lips dropping a small kiss there before gently settling his on my mouth. Warm, explorative kisses, pressed against my lips and made me yearn for more.

I bit Eric’s bottom lip, soothing it with my tongue and he dived in, claiming my mouth still gentle but with a need behind his kiss now, tangling his tongue with mine; teasing the roof of my mouth before sucking on my tongue.

I fell against him and his hands smoothed down my body to my arms and back. When his hands brushed and massaged the sensitive skin and muscles around my neck I moaned completely giving into what was coming. Eric made my sore muscles feel so loose.

The smaller towel slipped from my hair as Eric’s fingers sorted through and grasped my long brown tresses. “God, you smell so good,” he rasped before kissing me harder, with more fervour. “It’s the jasmine,” I say between biting kisses.

Eric’s hand lands on my hand holding in place my large towel. I was ready to let the towel drop. Sparks were creating an inferno inside of me kissing Eric.

It was then, Aunt Tabitha came in through the bedroom door, loudly, slamming it behind her.

Eric and I sprung apart but it was clear what we’d been up to. Aunt Tabitha smirked. “Eric you’re needed downstairs.”

“What?”

“There’s a phone call for you on one of the satallite phones. Your PA said you needed to take this one.”

“Now?” Eric stared at me, his jade eyes smouldering and his breathing fast. He shook his head, blinking. He gave me a final look and a small kiss on the cheek, before striding out the bedroom door.

I gazed at Aunt Tabitha, the woman who’d been caring for me and I was sure she could see my face was red. She only laughed at my embarrassment.

“It’s okay. Eric’s a handsome guy and you’re a beautiful women. He doesn’t see many beautiful women around here.” I flushed again, conscience I was still in my towel.

“I should get dressed,” I said, “I’m Ashlyn by the way.”

“Ashlyn,” it suits you Aunt Tabitha remarked. “You know my name from when you were sick, you called out for me quite often. I’m happy to say you appear healthy. But you are quite thin since we brought you into the house even.”

“I’ll meet you in the kitchen downstairs in forty-five-minutes. The kitchen staff will have some filling food which won’t make you sick because you haven’t been eating much but soup.”

“Thanks Aunt Tabitha. I appreciate it. Eric said I could phone my parents too?” I asked.

“I’ll let Eric help you with that Ashlyn. I’m sure he’ll want to spend more time with you and I don’t want to interrupt. But he is my nephew, so be gentle with him. His past was a rough one.” I nodded smiling at Aunt Tabitha, trying to show I wouldn’t hurt Eric.

“I’m just in the room down the hall.” She said, ” You seem a great deal better having showered and um, having having been busy with my nephew, but don’t overdue it. You were pretty ill their for a week.”

Aunt Tabitha left my room and I turned towards my new wardrobe, sorting through my it with appreciation.

A thought came to me as I tried on a bright purple sundress, where was I exactly that there was no wifi, cell phone reception, or landlines? I had a few questions that needed answering.

Make Up Haul: New Year January 2016

Hi everyone. If you are interested in beauty products and reviews on them, today is a good day to be reading my blog. I had a few gift cards and points to use over the holidays after buying presents and building up points from Fall. I hope you like my beauty haul for the current time.

NARS Blush color Desire
http://www.sephora.ca NARS Blush: Desire
1. NAR’S Blush – (www.sephora.ca ) -$37.00 – I am a huge fan of NARS’ blushes. They are on the more expensive side for a blush but the pigment is always fantastic and a blush compact lasts a long time. I was looking for the colour ‘Gaiety’ in Sephora when I bought my blush and I couldn’t find it. I settled for the colour ‘Desire.’ ‘Desire’ is a wonderful bright almost neon pink colour. I had to be careful when I picked up the colour with Sephora blush brush. At first, I swept too much pigment up. When I applied the blush to my face the bright pink made me look like a saloon girl from bygone days. I only have to have my blush brush barely graze ‘Desire’ and I pick up enough colour pigment for one cheek. I don’t find this happens with every NARS’ blush colour I have as compared to other blush brands. You only have to be careful with NARS’ blush colour ‘Desire’ as far as I know. This NARS blush line is the same blush line which has the wonderful ‘Orgasm’ color which everyone loves because it looks nice on most skin tones.

If you’re looking for a cheaper blush which still has excellent pigment, I would recommend blush by Tarte. I have a few Tarte blushes and the pigment is superb. Plus, Tarte is a natural makeup made from Amazonian Clay; however, NARS has beautiful colours you can’t find anywhere else, and I think their pigment rivals most blushes I have tried. Years after I first bought a small NARS palette, I’m still scraping the lasts bit of the two blush colours remaining out of the container.

2. Benefit Hoola Bronzer – (www.sephora.ca) – $36.00 – I bought this wonderful face palette

Benefit Hoola Bronzer
http://www.sephora.ca -Benefit Hoola Bronzer
from Tarte this summer which had a Bronzer, Highlighter, and Blush. Unfortunately, I used the palett fast especially since the Highlighter and Blush were half the size of the Bronzer. It was a great palette for travelling in the summer because I had all my contouring colours together. The Bronzer by Tarte is awesome because it isn’t overwhelming on pale skin; it is a bit orangey; however, I didn’t want to buy the whole palette again because I went through the highlighter and blush so fast. I am scraping the last bits of the Bronzer out each time I contour my face.

I asked a fantastic beauty blogger named Victoria Styles to recommend a Bronzer I could use as a darker contour colour on my  light skin. Victoria’s blog is called Living Disrobed. She recommended’ Hoola’ by Benefit.

I have been extremely happy with this Bronzer as a darker contouring color. The pigment is great and who doesn’t love Benefit, they make great makeup with fun packaging. I think the Bronzer colour suits me a little better then the Tarte Bronzer as much as I liked it, because the Benefit Bronzer colour is cooler. I use only a little of it on my hairline, beneath my cheek bones, and to contour around the edge of my face. Contouring is great when you want to be wearing more makeup and make your face appear thinner for certain occasions. I adore a highlighter I have been using from Two Faced called ‘Candle Light.’ This Benefit Bronzer was exactly what I needed. I recommend the product and thank you to Victoria for helping me choose it.

Lancome Artliner 24Hour
http://www.sephora.ca Lancome Artliner 24Hour (NEW)
3. Lancôme Artliner 24Hour – (www.sephora.ca)- $38.00 – When I went to choose my favourite liquid eyeliner by Lancôme, I was a bit dismayed because they did not have my regular black liquid eyeliner at Sephora. The difference between the new Lancôme eyeliner and the old one I’ve been using is the old liquid liner was only ‘Artliner’ and not ‘Artliner 24 hour’ which is waterproof. There’s a difference and I didn’t realize it. The girl who was helping me at Sephora said Lancôme had come out with a newer liquid eyeliner. It was supposed to be a liquid liner with a better foam tipped brush.

It’s hard to convince me the new liquid liner is better because I have used the original ‘Artliner’ in black\Noir for five or six years. But they are not making the original liner anymore.

I am not impressed with this eyeliner. I kept getting a thicker line then I wanted and I couldn’t get the little flick I was always so able to artfully achieve with the original liner. But I have gotten used to ’24hour Artliner’ and the brush is actually more precise. You only need to hold it so the point is against your lashline, not the side of the brush as with the original Artliner liquid eyeliner. You also need ample time for this eyeliner to dry as in you have to wait five minutes so your eyeliner doesn’t end up all over your eye areas on your face.

What I also do not like about the ’24hour’ liner is the colour on your lash line is not opaque. It’s not black and it should be. It looks like a see-through greyish colour and the eyeliner doesn’t apply well over eyeshadow. The tube is smaller as well. I’m not sure if it means it won’t last me for four months as the original ‘Artliner’ did. The tube of the original ‘Artliner’ could only seem bigger then the new tube but not actually be bigger.

I should mention, I have altered this part of this blog since I published this post. I was sick of this eyeliner product and that it didn’t do it’s job. I was too late to return it to Shopper’s Drug Mart where I purchased it but I contacted http://www.lancome.ca by email and they are issuing me a cheque in the mail for refund. Great service Lancome, my faith in your products is restored. Please go back to your old liquid Artliner.

4. It Works Hello Lashes 5 in 1 Clinically Proven Mascara – (www.ulta.com) – $24.00 (US) – I

It works 5 in 1 mascara real
http://www.ulta.com It works 5 in 1 Mascara
wasn’t sure where to find this mascara in Canada. I’m sure you can buy it somewhere since I received it in Luxebox which is a Canadian beauty box. But even though our dollar is low, if you love this mascara, Canadians can order from Ulta. This five in one mascara is awesome. I don’t often say this about mascaras. I have gone through many and the fact this mascara is not a waterproof mascara, speaks to how good the product is. I apply ‘Hello Lashes’ first, and then I apply a waterproof mascara over top and the problem of my mascara travelling onto my oily eye areas is solved. You might want to check under your eyes in the day though, in case some of the mascara has made it under your eyes. I have had success with the Mascara staying on my lower eyelashes but not perfect.

What’s so special about this five in one mascara I received? Well the brush is a fantastic design. There is a little ball of a brush on the end of the mascara wand over top a regular mascara brush.  This brush is so helpful for putting mascara on every single tiny eyelash I have. Often, we forget about the lashes at the corner of our eyes, especially if your lashes are blond. This product is clinically proven to increase the length and volume of your lashes. It is a natural formula and contains ingredients which are good for your lashes and a lash enhancing serum. The Ulta website says it was developed with help from leading plastic surgeons. I find this mascara to be superb. My lashes are healthier and have increased in volume, length, and thickness since I started using the mascara. The brush really does get every lash. It surprises me it would work so well and so fast. But it does.

Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Wash
http://www.beautyboutique.ca Soap and Glory: Sugar Crush
Soap and Glory: Sugar Crush Body Wash – (www.beautyboutique.ca) – $16.00 –  I bought this product with Shopper’s Optimum points because I love the body butter I bought from Soap and Glory at Shoppers Drug Mart. Beauty Boutique is their newly launched online website. I wanted to try out some of Soap and Glory’s other products so one of them I am trying is this body wash which is more of a scrub. I use it a few times a week with another Soap and Glory body wash which is only a body wash. I don’t need to exfoliate my skin everyday. I find it becomes a little dry if I do that in Winter. But this body wash scrub smells great and sugar is a fantastic natural body scrub. Also, the product doesn’t cost too much. So, I might have to consider replacing my Lush ‘Sea Salt body scrub.’ If only for the reason, this product is more cost effective and lasts longer; not to mention the fragrance.

Soap and Glory: Clean on Me – (www.beautyboutique.ca ) – $14.00 – Generally, I like a

Soap and Glory - Clean on Me
http://www.beautyboutique.com Soap and Glory: Clean on Me
creamy body wash such as this ‘Clean on Me,’ to moisturize my skin in Winter. This is great because it moisturizes your skin well and smells good too. I use it when I am not using the body wash scrub. It contains mandarin peals, jasmine, and a list of other natural ingredients. This is probably, why I like it so much. Check out Soap and Glory products at your local drugstore you will be happy to discover them.

If you are buying at Shoppers Drug Mart make sure to use your Optimum Card or download their Optimum card application so you can download coupons for extra Optimum points each time you make a purchase from Shoppers. You can also get Optimum points off of Beauty Boutique online and Murale in store and online.

Sometimes when you need a lot of stuff from Shoppers you can receive ten thousand or eighteen thousand points for spending forty, fifty, seventy five, or a hundred dollars. They also have weekends where you can receive twenty times the Optimum points or the points you do have on your Optimum card or Optimum card application, are worth more. I buy stuff at Shoppers Drug Mart all the time so, during the entire Christmas season I was able to redeem points once for $60.00 and once this last time for $85.00. Your Optimum points build quickly so it is worth it to shop at Shoppers Drug Mart for makeup both more luxury brands and inexpensive brands such as Maybelline or L’Oreal.
