And now for our (optional) prompt! I know yesterday’s was a hard one for many of you, although I also was also very touched by the vulnerability and bravery displayed in your poems! But today’s prompt should be a little bit less emotionally involving — a nice chaser for yesterday. Today’s prompt comes to us from Lillian Hallberg. She challenges us to write a “book spine” poem. This involves taking a look at your bookshelves, and writing down titles in order (or rearranging the titles) to create a poem. Some fun images of book spine poems can be found here. If you want to take things a step further, Lillian suggests gathering a list of titles from your shelves (every third or fifth book, perhaps, if you have a lot) and using the titles, as close to the originals as possible, to create a poem that is seeded throughout with your own lines, interjections, and thoughts. Happy writing!

It is said you are The Shadow, and I can’t be One with You.
But you’ve lead me On My Knees, Into The Fire,
And now I’ve burned on through.
There is a Bridge but you won’t cross it,
You’d rather see my Beautiful Burn,
If you truly saw, you’d see in flame;
You’re my Beautiful Oblivion.
I’m a Beautiful Sacrifice and there is no such thing,
As a Beautiful Redemption for me but a redemption in you,
You say this is Last Call and I’m Mai Tai’d Up;
I Caught my fingers on a Rusty Nailed door,
And you promised to be a WallBanger,
But you laugh at ‘the mouth’ on me.
Accelerated away you and a crash left me Screwed.
I jumped free falling and ended —
Broken, Twisted, Damaged, and Shattered.
I knew you would try to save me,
Though we’re both dearly Flawed.
It doesn’t matter I’m Addicted to you,
Even though you leave my heart Exposed,
What kind of Love Game is this?
You can’t say you Claimed me; I’m not a piece of land.
This is Hard Love; my soul is Slashed,
Yet I’m lying here Sunkissed by your hands.
Lies you’ll hear, that you’re a Torture to Her Soul (my soul).
You Make Me complete, except when you’re ice cold to my face.
You say Let Me In but you mean Live For Me.
Where am I in us? Are you Meant for Me?
Do you Breathe Me In? Are we life in a breath?
God is my Salvation, but you take me to Oblivion,
When you Say My Name and I hear it on your lips,
You Have Me — get Under My Skin, and know me.
Will you Play My Game? Need we play games at all?
Maybe, you could call me Beautiful and mean it;
Although, I’m Grey inside.
You could be The Prince, women dream about but —
I’d rather have ‘you’the average guy,
I’m no Princess either; I’m The Raven crying ‘kaw.’
Unveiled, you see straight through me;
Ignoring my Hard Limit, don’t push my soul into departing,
Step away from your vastness, leave me the territory inside my head;
I’m already Captivated By You.
At times I wonder if I am, The Monster in His Eyes?
He leaves me Breathless, doesn’t see the green scales beneath my skin.
I’m Forever Consumed, Too Consumed by him,
Trying to tell him, there’s ‘give’ and ,take;’
Delighting most, when I am Taken by Storm.
He tells me there’s No Takebacks —
And he won’t Take Me Back if I leave now.
So, I remain Taken and Consumed,
Feeling all the Aftershock of his Afterburn,
Still setting me on fire, I’m Hardpressed to be Hardline(d) into his rules.
I’m Hardwired to be me, burning in his flames, choosing while my heart ignites,
He Shredded me in Full Exposure, my soul is raw and torn.
He loves me as the flames climb higher, before we’re Out of Time.
Being with him is glorious, rebirth from our ashes;
He Crash(ed) Into Me, and together we’re an Allegiant,
Pursued each other and both of us are Taken By Love; enthralled by the fire.
