Finish Off Friday’s Flash Fiction: The Good Stranger

Thanks to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting Finish Off Friday’s. This week’s theme is footsteps in the fog.

Footsteps echoed eerily in the fog. I’d left the pub early that night and was looking forward to being home warm in my bed.

I glanced behind me, hearing footsteps following persistently, wishing I had my black lab Iggy with me.

A large hand landed on my shoulder. Turning around with trepidation, I faced a tall man in a hoody. He raised his hands, trying to tell me he was harmless, then handed me my forgotten gold clutch.

He smiled, “I’m a bouncer at The Clover and I know you’re a regular. I saw you leaving and wanted to return your purse.”

“Thank you so much,” I stuttered trying to shove the ten from my pocket in his hand.

He refused the money insisting on walking me home, telling me about his young family.

November Notes: Poem – Day 1 – Wrapped Refrain – “I’ll Pass” #amwriting #novembernotes #poetry

Today’s prompt song is “Almost Lover”by A Fine Frenzy. For me it was a song that was pretty much on repeat eight-years-ago or so. It’s a beautiful song, see music video below:

“Almost Lover” – A Fine Frenzy

——–

Sail the words across my fair skin,

The memories avail, and hurt within.

Words can’t express heartbreak so strong,

Words can’t make right, you did me wrong.

If you weren’t interested, you should’ve said so first,

If you were decent, pain wouldn’t have been a curse.

—–

Almost lovers, the kind that hurt —

Woman the most; they’re the worst.

Almost lovers, leading you on,

Leading astray, in a sad song.

Don’t say you never knew, why the night ended tearful,

You’ll never admit fault; you’ll say saw unclear.

——

Tripped on a step, shocked at such eyes,

Deep brown ocre, good-looks suprise.

Not an old-man, but still too old —

For barely a woman, thoughts untold.

She should’ve kept her distance — far away, turned around.

She shouldn’t have melted as wax, at your face proud.

—–

Arrogantly you led her around,

Stupidly, she tried to astound

Talking, fluttering lashes black,

Someone should’ve gave her a smack.

You were off limits, you should’ve have said, you knew but —

Didn’t care, liked attention, simple jerk, and man slut

—–

You hurt her greatly; her fault it —

Remains; for years cursed, her hurting;

For an apology that never —

Will come to her in forever.

Goodbye almost lover, no time to waste on you,

Life is happening, she survived, made it through.

——

Almost lovers, almost lovers,

They do what they do, hurt, shove–

You into reality, so you

See they’re human, hurtful too.

Take off your blinders; modern charming has no class —

Sail the words of a liar fade; now really, “I’ll pass.”

Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner: You Leave, I’m not.

“The last time, everything fit in three duffles…” well, was never. I mean I have been collecting memorabilia in a trunk since I was a baby.

My apartment has books I am not willing to give up. It is a place to do my makeup and style my hair. It has a mini office, the refinished desk near the front door. The papers I’ve organized to do with taxes and health benefits are all there. The bedroom has our built in closet and dressers filled with my clothes, purses, and shoes.

You are aware living in Canada you need clothes for at least three seasons? Winter being the worst because sweaters, winter coats, and boots take up a great deal of space.  And when the weather is warm you need various kinds of shoes dependant on the occasion.

What about the furniture I made-over with my time and talent? What about the bed I purchased with sheets, pillows, and a duvet and covers? What about the lamps, couches, and curtains? The appliances and electronics?

You want me to go. . . it’s my apartment. I lived here first. You want me to fit everything in those three duffle bags. You’re crazy. You can’t make me leave, that’s your job man whore… (shove). Oh, you fell and hit your head on the stairs. Call your own ambulance.
