“Bird Set Free” — Sia

Broken like a cage, a bird flutters, pages in the breeze

Harnessed voice caught, sputters,

Sputters as clipped wings sprout feathers

Sputters as a tattered soul struggles

Struggles through the pain

Struggles, not able to sanguinely sing

Sing the fire of a scream inside

Sing the song of a creature chained

Chained and rejected

Chained, but the need to soar resides

Resides within a silent piercing message

Resides within her brokenness surviving

Surviving and holding on tight, nails piercing skin

Surviving in the melodies, phrases key —

Key to life, the writer writing,

Key to life, the singer singing with iron will

Will to shout as a bird set free

Will of vocals as a crescendoing sound

Sound of a voice roaring, echoing and never ebbing

Sound of a voice struggling back to life

Life, a vivid dream alive and brilliant

Life a scream torn from our insides, sick pain rising

Rising and lifting wings in the wind

Rising no longer with ghosts hiding

Hiding the lies that eat through us inside

Hiding our sadness, those tears until —

Until our voices are shrill from relief

Until melodies release the tension

Tension of of being muted and broken

Tension of piercing wails lifted

Lifted high, nails scratching to be alive

Lifted high not wanting to die, caged door open

Open to life and exploring, songs that twist

Open to life, shouting loud, a bird set free to fly

Fly to the edges of the ancient map

Fly to the fire of the sun, wings without wax

Wax poetic of those times you felt trapped

Wax on the candle dripping as light fades

Fades to be reborn in celestial fire

Fades as dreams rediscovered in ditties

Ditties thrown as a bird set free

Ditties forever sung, a piercing yell released

Released all anger, released all pain

Released all bitterness, soaring as the falcon —

Falcon dipping, bending, screeching

Falcon, no master, no cage, no traps

Screeching because birds glide to their own tunes

Trap escaped — now a birds truly set free.

——–

Or lives may fade, flicker out,

Although time is short, new youth shout.

Wild being young; then mellow,

As life reaches end, they’ll bellow.

At death’s cruelty at snatching,

Their loved ones stolen before their time, thus grasped —

Death doing his duty, aiding the sick to pass.

——

In grief we forget they’re two sides,

More than death, new life born crying.

Lusty wales, that mother’s yearn —

To hear when their baby’s have learned,

Peace in the womb, is no longer.

Time to live, greet both Dad and Mom;

Promise of life, legacy in children cherished,

We all die, but we also train the youth and build them.

——

As necessary as death, is —

Our sweet infants crying so hard.

Swaddled, held close, loved with full hearts,

Provided best, us making do —

With the old, ensuring kids have food.

All their needs, some wants, so they know they too belong.

Not spoiling, letting them control, but nurturing strong.

—–

So baby held within my arms,

I promise you, here there’s no harm.

As a babe and child, I can keep —

You safe, but you’ll grow learning; sweets —

Too many you’ ll become ill and keen

You don’t listen, life can be mean —

It’s no piece of cake; but I’ll let you be little, although —

You’ll hate me; life has enough time for forgiveness too.

———

Many faces have I, but don’t let me evaporate.

Too many masks I wear within to cover the scars that bind,

The twisting vines of ruined skin,

Not even plastic surgery could heal.

And the whispers of the dreadful night,

They haunt me in my sleep.

Each nightmare worse than the last, entrenching me in madness.

Crying and shaking, in a world I cannot escape.

My screams echoeing from the domed ceiling,

In St. Peter’s Basilica, my heart a kindled pyre.

Does God hear me, my fervent prayers without pride?

I know if He did, he would answer what I seek,

Provide relief from the cruelty of my suffering;

Of the ache and the burn in my skin.

He’d be a cooling gentle wind to end the burning flames,

I hope in my meekness for God as Elijah knew.

I try to forget. to move on, hiding behind masks so I’m safe.

My scars are not physical but they hide beneath skin,

Where plastic surgery cannot salvage a broken soul.

I’m a wretched bloody mess and my stomach is churning,

Why are the worst injuries, the ones you cannot see?

Why do people only see skin deep?

Not many will peer beneath the perfect layers of white ivory,

To see the layers underneath charred and scorched.

Many will not look past the words on your lips,

They are not interested in how a person says certain words,

Or why they say what do.

Many people hear only what they want to hear,

And if you choose to scream,

Than you’re the crazy one seeking attention.

But many screams are silent,

Before they are ever heard out loud,

This is why we need listeners and those with empathy,

To overcome those overflowing with ignorance and apathy to life;

To realize there is meaning in helping your neighbor out.

For we all have hidden scars and screams,

And most of them are dug deeply within our souls.

They wind around a person’s heart, a choking vine envokes —

A cry for help, so please hear it, long before we shout out loud,

Be still for a moment and listen well.

Respond before the masks hide many other faces and mine;

Act before you start cutting into our hearts,

Doing much more harm than good.

Watch your words and carefully avoid —

Assault and battery, for refusing to help those in need —

Refusing to help those lost in their pain.

Heal with laughter and conversation,

A piece of your precious time.

Do not forget the meek and lowly,

We all need help discovering pathways into stardust.

Poem: Free Verse – “Vines and Truth” #amwriting #poetry

http://www.dreamstime.com

———

If you’re trapped in this reality,

The words you hear will never betray.

If you’re trapped here,

You’ll never say the words,

You meant to tell me.

Soul words, which climb,

 As vines through your lips.

Vines that keep growing,

Whispering the language,

 You grew-up bilingually,

 Conversing and spelling.

The words you only say with friends,

And the silly ones your family made up,

Nick names, pet names,

The names a lover calls;

The words you speak,

 When you tell the truth,

And the words you catch yourself saying,

When you’re outright lying.

—–

Did you dream you could hide,

So many secrets and so many tombs.

Bury us beneath words,

 With no proof, no truth;

Does anyone know real?

In the land of typed phrases,

Spellcheck, and autocorrect,

 Are our words even ours?

When you can change the words,

 To mean and say,

Precisely, what you want them to say,

When your body language, tone,

And emotions cannot be seen,

What hides obscene and unseen?

——

And when I see such stunning eyes,

And they carry me away;

When your voice hits me there,

In the bottom of my heart.

The growl on your lips,

The tilt of your hips.

A glass of milk, brings tranquil sleep,

More gentle vibes and vines invisibly,

Through my mouth to yours.

As plants do crawl and sprout,

So do we affect someone else.

And you wonder how can you build,

An Alice in Wonderland lost yourself.

With so many vines,

Caught on your tongue,

Like a hydra with far–

Too many heads to chop off,

Vines as heads keep growing,

No fire can consume the lies,

Covering the truth.

——

Find out, what is life here?

There– with them?

Or someone else?

Listlessly browsing, areas meant,

To be lonely and free, at a cost,

Or joined together birds of a feather;

If “Hope is a thing with feathers,”

As dear Emily Dickinson wrote;

Please fly to the safest and softest place.

And let’s lay unmoving,

As vines wrapped around each other.

Not worried about our tomorrow’s,

Or finding more secrets;

Let the truth be our lips meeting,

Let the truth be in feeling our eyes,

Engaged over cheese, bread, and wine later.

Sitting on the couch,

Wrestling with your dog;

Watching our favourite shows,

Until sleep calls,

In a world where no one,

Can be trusted completely,

Where there are too many,

Half-truths and white lies.

Assure me at least,

You mean the best, and try,

To say the truth, as vines —

Wrap us together into,

The pitch dark night,

Tangled tight.
