#NaPoWriMo Day 2/Sunday Writing: Poem – Free Verse – “Healing Hearts.” #MLMM #poetry #amwriting

For NaPoWriMo Day 2, the prompt focuses on “addressing two “you”s in a poem. Such as taking an existing poem of yours or someone else’s, and rewriting it in a different voice. The point is to play with who is speaking to who and how.

I’m combining with MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie’s Sunday Writing prompt from March 4, of unlikely partnerships/friendships/relationships etc.

“Jar of Hearts” – Christina Perri

Who do you think you are?

Running around leaving scars,

Forget my jar of hearts,

Forget, how I hurt others to survive.

You’re the one who shattered my heart,

Was eternal brokenness your master plan?”

Who do you think you are —

I know who you are.

You’re the one who’s scarred,

Pumping blood to atrial veins.

A heart of stone it needs no blood,

It can’t memorize my tears that flood.

So who do you think you are,

Leaving the crevices of scars.”

Who do you think you are?

Thinking you can hide,

You’ve but, heartbreak to impart,

Once more,

My heart throbs, died part by part.

The ice inside your soul,

It’s the chill that winters holds.

Woman who judges,

Who froze out my love.”

Put down your bloody jar,

Peer beyond the freeze.

Absorb the fire of blood that frees,

Beyond to hearts that live,

That love, that ache, that feel;

That desire to take-on life despite.

Who do you think you are?

Quitting when love got hard.”

“I won’t stop my hands from pumping,

I’ll defibrillate my self.

I’m fighting to survive,

Collecting jars of hearts,

Because hurting them dulls,

The wound you gave me is relentless,

It’s leading me to death.

So, blood will meander in rivers,

Until my heart is healed;

I can survive on my own.”

I’ll make your stone heart ‘real,’

You’ll become a living human being.

Forget the ice inside your soul,

Forget the sharp knife in your gut twisting.

Leave behind your jar of hearts,

All those shattered souls you boasted.

My lubs, against your dubs,

They’re a power beyond your skills.

You’ll wake from slumber,

Amazed to finally feel,

Not to break others to love!

To heal our twin wounds.”

My beating heart it’s aching,

“Why did you cut it out twice?

Why does healing ache the most.

A throb that scars and burns,

Was I such monster that I couldn’t see,

Pain apart from hope’s generosity?”

Who did you think you were?

No more collecting jars of hearts,

My heart can heal yours.

Our scars are deep wells,

But together they’re better.

Better than two hearts alone,

Together we can let time lighten,

Deep cuts; time will bind our wounds,

And reveal a hope for the better.”

———

Many faces have I, but don’t let me evaporate.

Too many masks I wear within to cover the scars that bind,

The twisting vines of ruined skin,

Not even plastic surgery could heal.

And the whispers of the dreadful night,

They haunt me in my sleep.

Each nightmare worse than the last, entrenching me in madness.

Crying and shaking, in a world I cannot escape.

My screams echoeing from the domed ceiling,

In St. Peter’s Basilica, my heart a kindled pyre.

Does God hear me, my fervent prayers without pride?

I know if He did, he would answer what I seek,

Provide relief from the cruelty of my suffering;

Of the ache and the burn in my skin.

He’d be a cooling gentle wind to end the burning flames,

I hope in my meekness for God as Elijah knew.

I try to forget. to move on, hiding behind masks so I’m safe.

My scars are not physical but they hide beneath skin,

Where plastic surgery cannot salvage a broken soul.

I’m a wretched bloody mess and my stomach is churning,

Why are the worst injuries, the ones you cannot see?

Why do people only see skin deep?

Not many will peer beneath the perfect layers of white ivory,

To see the layers underneath charred and scorched.

Many will not look past the words on your lips,

They are not interested in how a person says certain words,

Or why they say what do.

Many people hear only what they want to hear,

And if you choose to scream,

Than you’re the crazy one seeking attention.

But many screams are silent,

Before they are ever heard out loud,

This is why we need listeners and those with empathy,

To overcome those overflowing with ignorance and apathy to life;

To realize there is meaning in helping your neighbor out.

For we all have hidden scars and screams,

And most of them are dug deeply within our souls.

They wind around a person’s heart, a choking vine envokes —

A cry for help, so please hear it, long before we shout out loud,

Be still for a moment and listen well.

Respond before the masks hide many other faces and mine;

Act before you start cutting into our hearts,

Doing much more harm than good.

Watch your words and carefully avoid —

Assault and battery, for refusing to help those in need —

Refusing to help those lost in their pain.

Heal with laughter and conversation,

A piece of your precious time.

Do not forget the meek and lowly,

We all need help discovering pathways into stardust.

Poem: Free Verse – Thoughts of the Mockingjay #amwriting #poetry #fiction #symbolic

Credit: Wikia

———

Mockingjay, pretty bird or elegant deadly queen?

A woman, a creature of dystopia and mythology

If there’s one bird to be, it would be a Mockingjay

Though I know they’re imaginary,

Mockingjays are real as symbols of courage.

Birds which don’t break, they carry on;

Nature outlasting outlandish experiments,

Reinventing, Mother Earth evolving and re-working,

What humans would call a mistake;

Yet these Jays cannot be hidden away, they’re fierce warriors risen.

——

As a Mockingjay, could I fly close to the sun?

Icarus (I think) burned off his majestic wings doing such a deed,

 I’d think a celestial queen of Mockingjays is smarter

She’s a stealthy bird whose whistle, repeats any tune heard,

Her mimickery can be confusing to her enemy.

A Mockingjay queen, would keep her scars hidden,

Safe beneath feathers which float, as hope;

Now fuzz, falling furiously as she grows, dropping downy —

Fast, no longer a chick adorned with puffiness

Now a full-blown black and white glory who sings life’s story,

The story of pain, betrayal, and loss;

Your average adventure and most tantalising tale.

Oh, what a Mockingjay can truly be,

When her heads adorned by sunlight and truth,

Choosing her battles and using her melody

The Melody you’re humming to yourself.

The sweetest songs of tears, quicksilver and liquid gold,

Molten metal glimmering

She burns with fire in her soul, though she is no mythical Phoenix;

Yet she rises from the ashes of society and science

She repeats your tunes, the echoes throughout her wild lands.

—–

You’ll never catch a Mockingjay, there’s wrath in her footprints,

Her anger caused, ignites an inner flame brilliant.

She’ll swoop from above and end you below,

The dignified woman, no longer laughing,

Going to battle, her war song a trill

The Mockingjay flies her wings fluid, her form grace designed.

A legendary bird of modern times,

Survival of the fittest crossing genetics;

Nature re-designs better than a science lab of horrors

Mockingjay is more than bird she is the huntress

The symbolic warrior of Ancient Greece and Rome – Artemis;

Bow with blazing pyrotechnics and lethal skill, pointed at her kill.

She lives and she dreams of the day, the war is long ended,

Where revenge and the cold stone hearted have no meaning.

Her desire is the melody so beautiful it thrills and heals

Enraptures a soul with clearly sung words.

She’s a warrior with golden platted lashes, winged at her pray;

A sultry seductress and and goddess flying free.

Mockingbird walks, she sways, feathers flocked close,

She’s as precious as the sparrow, calling lonely for her love.

She’d scarred, her heart torn

So strong but in need of help most of all.

Even symbols of strength such as her,

Who mimick a fictitious tune with ease;

Need more than survival to hope for.

She needs more than, a gilded bird cage.

Poem: Free Verse – “Hope Scarred” #amwriting #poetry

http://www.brainyquotes.com

———

Please don’t give me hope,

Don’t come into my life a moment,

Leaving me with expectations.

You think I’d know better,

Having experienced this situation often;

Expectations are dangerous,

Few people in life meet them,

No matter how basic,

The expectation maybe.

Don’t set me up to fall,

To get sucked underwater,

You the undertow drowning my sorry soul.

Should’ve known better,

You weren’t a genuine Pearl,

Should’ve known by now,

Those who care for me, make time for me.

Should have known by now,

But you made me believe,

This time you were for real.

Now I’m deflated, hurt, and frustrated.

What is it with you?

 I can’t even expect you to be,

A dependable friend?

No, of course not, the fault is mine.

I can put expectations on myself,

But never on you, never on anyone.

Just let the pixie dust and fairytales,

Burn into the night, a haunting fire.

But hope is not destroyed,

It only burns brighter in the flames warm.

Keep your hope and your dreams,

 I live in the real world;

It hurts me, scars me, damages me.

You totalled the destruction.

Tomorrow I rebuild torn,

But knowing, no man —

Can expect anything from me, until I say.

Right now my hope is crushed.

You taught me to be hopeless,

Made me feel lost and forlorn.

For now, a true fact, hope is the bird I scorn,

Tomorrow, hope has *feathers, and will be reborn.

Three Line Tales: Songs on Fire #3Linetales #lyrics #music

Thanks to Sonya of Only 100 Words for hosting 3 Line Tales:

——

Dan Carlson

——–

1.”She’s just a girl, and she’s on fire; hotter than a fantasy, longer like a highway; she’s living in a world, and it’s on fire; feeling the catastrophe, but she knows she can fly away; oh, she got both feet on the ground; and she’s burning it down; oh, she got her head in the clouds; and she’s not backing down; this girl is on fire . . .”

Alicia Keys “Girl On Fire”

——–

2. “After I have traveled so far; we’d set the fire to the third bar; we’d share each other like an island; until exhausted, close our eyelids . . .”

Snow Patrol – “Set The Fire to The Third Bar”

——–

3. “I’m a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm; and the scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold; my blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones; it keeps my veins hot, the fire’s found a home in me; I move through town, I’m quiet like a fight; and my necklace is of rope, I tie it and untie. . .”

Lorde -“Yellow Flicker Beat”

——-

Decided to try some lyrics this week. This prompt made me think of many songs and how we use fire to describe so many feelings, situations, and experiences in life. There is fire in everything.

Poem: Free Verse – “The Battle Infinite”

http://www.youtube.com

———

Demons dreaming,

Surround me as I wake;
Oh give me serenity,
Nightmares creep and ache.

Falling from a mind overwhelmed,

By imagination on overdrive;

Let my mind be at peace,

Let the demons finally cease.

No understanding have I,

Why the demons we slaughter,

Are always the same sin.

I defeated you before,

But you come back for more;

The snake, loathsome reptile,

From Eden you did break.

Losing tiny snake legs,

To strike a woman’s heel.

How dare you come back,

To bring me down again.

I pray you keep your distance;

You keep moving closer.

Claustrophobia, panic,

Praying you don’t turn me to granite;

Pulling out my weapons,

I’ll battle Medusa harder still.

You can see the braided,

 Depths of my scars;

We know each other well old foe,

But I won’t go down pleading;

I have light in my armour,

Not the kind which normal snakes like;

The kind which burns,

Makes snakes writhe for life.

Pain will be your only friend,

Old foe; you fight the same.

Each and every time I return,

I don’t know why I turned my back on you;

Those not weary do not see,

The enemy coming up behind,

A dagger piercing my back; my heart.

A knock to my head; concussions blind;

But I heal fast, and I heal stronger.

Building my muscles each movement,

I recover; blood may flow,

And I hurt all the same;

What’s worse, I can’t blame you for all,

I do this to myself.

Will you ever learn stupid girl?

When are you no longer a frightened child?

There are no excuses to justify my crimes;

I know what is right and yet,

Time and again I find my foe and fight.

A battle with motions memorized,

A continual siege; I win and lose.

Pound you into the ground,

Poison you with your potent venom;

But you bounce back and reform,

Taking on another sin,

To challenge me for awhile;

Making it sound excellent,

That such a rest wouldn’t be exuberant.

If I’m smart I liquefy you;

Your blood and more stain the ground.

But since I’m human,

I complicate the issues.

And there are days I pause,

To be attacked and left weaponless,

Filled with panic and worry,

Wandering the valley as the poison seeps deep.

Only in the coming of dawn do I delight,

Fortitude returns and I smile small,

Learning my lesson,

Time and time again.

Experience keeps teaching despite,

A woman who continues to decide who she is;

Not knowing, not realizing,

Life is a gory battle, no one escapes.

The scar tissue builds upon scars;

Wounds of war are often the worst,

When we are not expecting them.

Pulling the dagger from my own back;

It’s a pain I hate to remember vividly.

But I got up;

And I walked on.

Feeling the dawn heal me;

As I kept on the road.

To another traveller I might seem,

A terrified, desperate girl.

Yet more often I see the same look in another’s eyes;

The knowledge of heart break, repentance, and experience.

A cycle doomed to repeat until we’ve finally learned;

Bigger hands than ours must deal the blows.

Hands which hold,

Entirety of unknown and known universes;

Hands which cradle the world.

Poem: Free Verse – ” Silver and Gold “

http://www.studio.e-picasa.com

——–

You can say it in as many ways,

As it comes to your mind,

You can try to convince me otherwise,

But I have drawn a line.

Cross the line, I’ll tell you how it goes,

My answer, you’ll probably hate.

But scars run deep, criss-crossing,

Battle wounds which don’t completely heal.

You only see a slight raised line,

White and long —

 But I feel the pain of the wound.

I remember how the scar came to be,

I know how I screamed inside,

Trying to be brave,

As the cut ran red with blood,

Gore and trauma, degradation.

A scar such as this doesn’t merely heal,

It can reappear and open-up,

A wound that flares with blood-red drops.

Underneath the skin is pink marble,

And  you can see how deep it went,

Layers pealed back as I cried with pain.

It’s my scar on my body;

Apart of me for life.

A mark that lives on my skin and —

I have curves, I will not lie.

But my curves aren’t perfect creamy white,

 Scars and nicks lie here and everywhere.

Disfigurement remaining there,

I’m imperfect and I’m flawed.

Don’t you know strength was born from such scars?

Curves are real and they reflect,

A body blessed with shape and allure.

But what I want you to notice,

When my skin is bare,

The scars angry red, left there.

For those scars are what will always be,

They are me, and I am them.

If you can accept them,

You can love me too,

For on my body they are silver and gold,

Worth what I’ve been through.

NaPoWriMo: Poem – Wrapped Refrain – “Death Stops”

And now for our (optional) prompt! Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that begins with a line from a another poem (not necessarily the first one), but then goes elsewhere with it. This will work best if you just start with a line of poetry you remember, but without looking up the whole original poem. (Or, find a poem that you haven’t read before and then use a line that interests you). The idea is for the original to furnish a sort of backdrop for your work, but without influencing you so much that you feel stuck just rewriting the original!. For example, you could begin, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day,” or “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons,” or “I miss them, but it wasn’t a disaster,” or “they persevere in swimming where they like.” Really, any poem will do to provide your starter line – just so long as it gives you the scope to explore. Happy writing!

Please see NaPoWriMo for further information.

——

A poem with another poems line: “Because I could not stop for death. He kindly stopped for me.”  – Emily Dickinson.

——

——

Think it’s relevant, everything?

We do each day?  We are revelling,

Time drip-slipping away everyday.

Hovering over lunacy, play,

Forgetting we’re mortal, time wields our last battle.

Scars running deep, old injuries, our bones rattle.

——-

Knowing their isn’t a choice when death comes,

Though we run, he’ll kindly stop some —

Method of escape; We can’t stop —

For death, we wouldn’t know to drop,

So, he stops his chariot racing, catches mortal.

No breathing in the air, you’ve no need at the portal.

—-

To blessed world you find escape,

Death leading you in his slow gait,

Time it has no meaning, kingdom —

Come has arrived and you are done.

Though years you might’ve waited for death to take you,

Think it’s relevant? Time? His hands; God holds you.

Poem: Etheree – “Damage of Heart Break”

http://www.quotesgram.com

——-

Sometimes it’s easier to write poetry when,

You’re not counting syllables yet I,

Find there’s no rhythm when you don’t,

Not enough words to describe life,

At times it’s a gong show,

I can’t seem to win,

Change can be hard,

Learning curve,

Growth hurts,

Stings,

Eyes,

Blind to,

Such patterns,

Never learning,

Experience, leaves burns,

Never healing on your body,

Not salvaging the heart scars,

Heart yearns for an echo, one whose,

Heart shares its rhythm, no absence found,

By others who damaged our souls, hearts, skin.

—-

Perhaps, it begins, subtle opening.

Free time amazing, loneliness still,

Staying away from danger, they,

Who suck you dry for one night,

Leave without even notes,

Boxing the night into,

Their life pattern,

No loving,

Just sweat,

Lies,

——

Come

Undone,

Eventually,

You’ll get bee stung,

Learning that you hurt,

With each bed sheet stumble,

Never having anyone there,

Returning home to empty rooms,

Shadows flickering in lamplight glows,

Home alone, no face taking her visage.

—–

Woman who broke your heart, beat your soul dead.

So you do the same to other women,

Leaving them lost, confused, tormented,

Promises you made never came,

Long gone you keep playing,

Filling up empty,

Strainer has holes,

You can’t fix,

Got to

Learn.

—-

Try,

Let her,

See a man,

Not merely bent,

Willing to work through it,

To let the path waters,

Flow, guide through trepidation,

Steps you must take for perdition,

Coming alive, fire consumes through pain,

Living life, though it hurts so good loving.
