——-

Ring the bells ring them, sound organ pipes too,

Atlantis sinks to obscurity

Earth trembles, calls with a tune sung,

Ring the bells; last time you’ll hear them out loud.

Artistic endeavour, artisan’s craft,

Carved pipes; hear the organ it booms last.

Earthquakes, rocks tumble, falling into time.

A void in the earth barely felt until now.

Modern humans are obsessed by her,

A lost city never found; for it’s day —

Full of vision, construction, art, thought.

City that felt it was the greatest,

The gods thought otherwise; earth swallowed,

City Atlantis whole, taking everyone.

Down to earth’s depths, in it’s belly kept,

Here lies Atlantis hidden, there wasn’t —

Much difference between ‘us’ now and them.

Or hundreds of cities –past, present;

Civilization thousands of years old,

It isn’t that the the ocean and land,

Just ended a city; it’s the people

Inside who forget about decency.

Treating each other terribly and —

No thought for tomorrow, hearts so,

Cold, stone rigid; they sink themselves down,

Into the water until they’re nothing

Nothing but a dream, not even memory,

Just something modern people wonder of,

Forgetting lessons as Atlantis did.

Interview With Jasminder Bains

Welcome to another biweekly interview on Mandibelle16. I’m hoping where ever you are the weather is nice and spring is on its way or summer isn’t too hot. This week I interviewed the impressive and talented writer Jasminder Bains from the United States. You can check out her blog here: Confessions Of A Reborn Girl

1. Hi Jasminder. Please Tell Us About Yourself?

Where to begin…I live to write because it’s my form of therapy and I love weaving words into stories. I’m a full-time dream chaser with a knack for crafting things and philosophizing and overthinking when I can.

I’m two years clean and keeping it that way. Psychology fascinates me; hence, I’m majoring in it. You’ll find there is a lot of psychology based posts on my blog. I love to sing and dance to KPOP when nobody’s around, or at least when I think nobody’s around. I had to run up three flights of stairs because I got caught once.

Also, I’m obsessed with green tea and I like to meditate because it clears my mind. I prefer video games and Doc Martens to dresses ( I only own one dress) and makeup. The only makeup I wear is eyeliner and it’s about as good as my sense of direction. I get lost even with a GPS to help me find my way. I’m an aggressive middle-class minimalist who pillages anything I can get my hands on; this is why I have a ring of rocks sitting on my dresser.

I have moments where I’m incredibly with the times and others I’m not. I set up a Twitter account recently. I have no idea what half the buttons mean. But I can give you Excel pointers and talk about ‘markdown formatting;’ I can’t tell you much about Facebook.

2. When Did You Begin Writing and Blogging? What Does Writing and Blogging Mean To You? What motivates and inspires you?

I started blogging last July, but I’ve been writing since I was in fifth grade. Poetry and blogging are how I vent as well as defeat stereotypes. I write because I want to heal other people and because I love doing it.

I find inspiration from my life because I’m an avid people-watcher and I overthink everything. I find new material is as simple as walking into the middle of a cafeteria and sitting down. I learned so much about human interaction by doing this. I make time for writing whenever I can.

“I live to write because it’s my form of therapy and I love weaving words into stories. I’m a full-time dream chaser with a knack for crafting things and philosophizing and overthinking when I can.” – Jasminder Bains

3. What Are Your Most Current Writing Projects? Any Future Projects You Have In Mind?

I’m planning on participating in the 2017 Kindness Challenge! The link to sign up is here if you’re interested. I’m also hosting my own blogging challenge, it’s called the ‘Boundless Challenge.’ The premise of the challenge is to share a #boundlessmoment from the past week where you did something that you thought you weren’t actually capable of doing.

I started the challenge not too long ago so it’s relatively new. My goal is to inspire people through this prompt. Maybe they will believe they are capable of doing much more than they think they can do. Check out the sixth #boudlessmoment challenge on my blog HERE.

4. Can You Tell Us More About Your Blog and Why You Started Blogging?

When I founded @Confessions (Confessions Of A Reborn Girl) I had one goal and one goal alone: to teach others about human potential. Too many times I’ve heard stories of people who gave up on their dreams because they didn’t think they had it in them or someone discouraged them from their path. I’m here to tell you that you are good enough and that nobody can tell you otherwise.

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” – Alice Walker

That being said, [my blog] would qualify as a lifestyle blog, though I focus more on mentality and mindset rather than fashion or food. My blog categories are different takes on that ‘boundless lifestyle’ if you will.

Life, as the catagory name states, revolves around my everyday thoughts and experiences. [As I noted above] you can also find my own blogging challenge, the Boundless Challenge, which is devoted to inspiring the WordPress community to achieve their full potential. At the end of each week, I share #boundlessmoments of my own and from across the internet. . . Who knows? Maybe next week you’ll be featured!

Writer’s Corner is [a segment on my blog] where I analyze social norms and American culture along with occasional philosophizing. DIY is exactly as the name states. I have this category because crafting opened up my thinking in a way nothing else could. I believe that it can do the same for you. [Lastly, my] meditation journal [catagory] stems from my adoration for — well — meditation. [Since I] over-think, meditation is the perfect counter to my habit and it helps me analyze my emotions and inner conflict.

“Too many times, I’ve heard stories of people who gave up on their dreams because they just didn’t think they had it in them or someone discouraged them from their path. I’m here to tell you that you are good enough and that nobody can tell you otherwise” – Jasminder Bains

5. How Does Your Blog Tie-In With Your Stance on Mental Health?

I continue to challenge the stigmas and negative stereotypes surrounding the field of mental health. There’s so much more to psychology than depression or schizophrenia or bipolar disease; [these are] only a small branch of [what is called] abnormal psychology. In order to understand the abnormal, we must first understand the normal.

I hope that by being open about my own experiences with mental health challenges and triumphs, I can give others the strength to do the same. There’s nothing wrong with having a bad day, month, or year. There’s nothing wrong with having things that keep you up at night. There’s nothing wrong with being broken.

6. Do You Have Any Other Projects On The Go? What Is Your Writing Process Like? Do You Have Any Genres of Writing or Reading that You Prefer?

I’m planning on writing a fiction book called Project Rebirth. I’ve no details other than that because I hardly know what the book is about myself. 😛 For me, writing is painful.Writing is life. WHAT WAS I THINKING WRITING THAT?!! Editing is painful. Editing is life. Rinse and repeat.

Fantasy is my FAVORITE genre. None of this 21st-century teen smut fantasy romance. I mean classy fantasy like Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart series or Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling or The Ranger’s Apprentice booksI prefer these types of books so much more than teen romance novels.

“I hope that by being open about my own experiences with mental health challenges and triumphs, I can give others the strength to do the same. There’s nothing wrong with having a bad day, month, or year. There’s nothing wrong with having things that keep you up at night. There’s nothing wrong with being broken.” Jasminder Bains

7. Do You Have Any Helpful Tips for Other Writers? Is There Anything Else You’d Like to Share Pertinent to this Interview?

Keep writing. It’s the only way you get better (and shameless). Also, I want to fight the negative stigmas and stereotypes around mental health because it’s vastly misunderstood and generalized which is dangerous for everyone.

8. What Are Your Three Favorite Blogs You Follow Of Any Kind?

“Pain”

By Jasminder Bains

August 26, 2016

*****

What’s this? My insides feel like they’re tearing apart.

Something’s wrong, I should take some medication.

Something’s wrong, it’s 3 A.M. and I’m awake again. Did I ever fall asleep? I feel like I’m dying.

I’m frozen, I feel like screaming, is this really real?

Maybe this is the dream I have to wake up from, I don’t remember falling asleep so maybe I never woke up.

Something’s wrong, it’s 4 A.M. and I’m still here. I should just close my eyes, I wouldn’t be able to sleep if it was appendicitis….would I?

Something’s wrong, it’s only 7 A.M. and I’m already awake. No, mum, don’t leave for work just yet. There’s a patient lying here in bed who needs to be seen.

Mum is gone. My brother needs my phone for school. It’s low on battery because I stared blankly at music videos and funny vines for half the night unable to react thanks to the burning sensation in my stomach.

Dad wants to know what’s going on so I spill my guts on him. It’s time to try another medication, stay hydrated, and ride things out.

Mum says book an appointment if it doesn’t get better. I wonder if it will get better.

I’m a statue, unmoving and emotionless. I thought today was yesterday. Guess my brain didn’t register that I ever went to sleep.

Should I feel crooked that this pain is now who I am? I don’t want to do anything let alone go the hospital. It could be nothing. Just like me.

Dad wants me to make him lunch if I’m able. Fine. The pain is mostly gone and I can wait 10 minutes to pass out.

There are two types of naps: the kind that make you feel worse than before, but you know you had no choice, and the kind that make you feel energized. Mine was the latter. Maybe it’s because I slept two hours instead of 20 minutes. Oh well. At least the pain’s almost gone.

All I’ve had to eat today is half a bagel and a tin of Chobani yogurt. I should eat something else. A salad sounds divine only I’m not sure if I’m strong enough to eat the croutons and leaves yet. Only one way to find out. Verdict: I can chew a crouton. I can’t chew a spinach leaf. I’ll just have a burrito.

Something’s wrong, it’s been 18 hours since I laid awake in bed screaming in my head and I’m doing it again. Except this time in a chair with a plate of food in front of me. Forget it. I’m not eating if it’s gonna sting this bad. Time to take some more medication.

I don’t want to be a physical embodiment of pain, I want my life back. I want to feel joy again, I want to listen to music that lifts me up again, I want to write a blog post ahead of time again, I want to have faith again, I want to feel healthy again, I want to have both feet planted firmly on the ground again, I want to be me again.

~Live Boundless.

Tale Weaver Prompt: Poem – Wrapped Refrain – ” Fireworks Like Stars” #amwriting #poetry #newyears #taleweavers

Thanks to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting this week’s Tale Weavers prompt: celebration and the New Year.

——

Oh brilliant star once gifted, you

Blow away all dark, you shine true.

Your colours effervescent, clear,

Holding eternity in lights sear.

The calm of night hidden, in sparkle with awe we live.

Stars erupting vivid, as seen in a child’s eyes bright.

—–

Dear child do you know, our country?

Is not young as she was once; won —

Her liberty from England with ease.

Didn’t as our Southern neighbours cease —

Their freedom; we grew from peaceful roots, we amplify,

Reason in the world for one-hundred-fifty-years nigh.

—–

So in this New Years night proudly,

Watch the sparklers light, the crowd —

Cheering as the stars burst red, white —

And crackle in the air to delight.

All people gathered to ring in twenty-seventeen,

The year of Our Lord, brilliant stars gleam.

—–

We’ve more than celestial stars,

Burning in the night milenias;

Milenias times millions more,

Kanada, “village,” country born.

A multiplicity of ethnicities know home,

Glowing fireworks alight the skies, ample colour shown.

—–

The stars are our fireworks, they

Light all our ways home, to know,

Such a gift we’ve been given, such —

Treasure fine: inspired and just,

Fire in the sky ignites majestic liquid lights,

Oh brilliant stars could we touch divinity this night?

Poem: Wrapped Refrain – “Hers” #wordhighjuly #poetry #amwriting #makisig

——–

He steps out of the shower wearing,

Towel around waist, torso bared.

Appreciation in her gaze,

Still lovers in morning’s rays.

He’s shaving at the mirror now, 8:00 am shadow;

Hand caresses his face dear; whiskers bare skin loved so.

—–

She adoringly watches; he does his —

Hair; style enough to say he actually gives;

Because, he matters to her; he’s attractive,

Features cared for; laughs, she’s pensive.

He’s putting on a show for her; pulling up his dark jeans,

Strip show reversed; he stares into her eyes, her dream.

——-

A button up shirt, match his eyes blue,

No suit today; just hers to amuse.

A watch on his wrist; one she bought,

Ring on his finger; him she sought.

There’s a song which was sung, about a ‘sharp dressed man.’

He thinks of it smirking; she grins impressed; his fan.

——-

He’s comfortable; she blinks and stares,

His heart thumps; she likes what he wears.

She likes his bare skin; his heart beat,

She likes his brain; he’s smart, sweet.

He maybe flawed, she loves him still; everyday he

Steps out of the house; holding her hand and he’s hers.

Poem: Quatrain – “Take Back Your Ring ” #wordhighjuly #poetry #amwriting #habilin

——–

http://www.pinterest.com

——

Not with me; think of you too much.

A tiny ring; it you so condemns.

Even in death your pretentious,

Hurting me; dying this way such.

——–

Is it a poisonous ring to touch?

A gem given not generous.

Without thought of reverence,

To your memory, not a crutch.

——–

Only a ring, such evil brings,

Only a ring; inside me stings.

A ring he made a promise to —

Love me for all time; it sings.

——-

Yet into my brain it’s screwed,

Saw you kissing her by the yew.

At your grave; asking ring keep too.

In death hold; you I never knew.

Chapter 29. How Was Last Night For You: John Returns

Please read Chapter 28 here.

Chapter 29: John Returns

“Mom, hello? Is that you?” John said, pressing Nina’s IPhone against his ear.

“Jordan is that you? Why are you using Nina’s phone I was just talking to you. . .” Edith replied.

“No, Mom. It’s me John. I’m alive, here with Nina. You need to stop the funeral.”

“Jordan this isn’t funny. We discussed this. Your brother is dead. He’s passed on and we need to move on too, even if we don’t have a body to bury. You and Nina can hope forever, but eventually you are going to have to come terms with it. I know my son. If he was alive, he would’ve found his way home.”

“This isn’t Jordan Mom. It’s John. I am home. I came home early this morning. I ran into Nina walking on the beach in front of our house.” John told his Mom beseechingly.

“John?” Edith’s voice was muffled and he could the tears in her voice.”This better be you. Where have you been young man it’s been over four-months?”

“There’s a lot to explain Mom . . .” Edith cut John off.

“Take a selfie, show me a me picture of how you look with Nina right now.” John and Nina obliged Edith, taking a few photos on Nina’s phone and sending them to Jon’s Mom.

Edith called back minutes after receiving the pictures, “I’m coming over to your house now and I’m bringing everyone.”

Nina gazed at John putting her hair back into a tighter ponytail. “What did Edith say?”

“She thought I was Jordan. She was crying, but the selfies convinced her I’m alive. Mom’s coming over now and bringing my Dad and brothers.”

Nina swore. “The house is kind of a mess John. I haven’t felt much like cleaning the last couple of weeks . . .”

“It’ll be okay Nina. She won’t care about the mess until later. Mom needs to see me for herself first.” Nina wrapped her arm around John’s waist and he put his arm around her shoulders, they began walking back to John’s beachfront house, kicking sand up as they walked.

“How will you explain it all to Edith and Robert, your Dad? To the rest of your family?” Nina asked John.

“Well, I’ll explain as best as I can. I’m not sure where I was for most of four-months. . . I’d rather talk with you first but I’m sure the family is half-way here by now. As if a curse isn’t weird enough, coming back to life after being between life and death for months, will be shocking.” John reasoned.

“I think,” Nina countered, “You’re family will be overjoyed to see you safe and healthy. Not to mention, such as in every happily ever after, the curse is broken. I think your family will be happy you and I, and they can live normal lives without worrying about awful events occurring around you and affecting them. Your family loves you and will be enthused you did not die that night as they all thought.”

Nina kissed John’s cheek with a smacking kiss and he laughed, messing her hair up lightly. “Tell them the truth as best as you can. Tell us all. I would love to hear your story from after the point I thought you died, and you disappeared into the water and sky, when Talise broke the curse.”

John kissed Nina softly. “I’ll try to tell you first. The drive up here will take everyone a bit to get here.” The house loomed before them and they walked up the porch steps together through the back door.

John and Nina both showered together. They wanted to spend their time loving each other in the shower, but knowing Edith could barge in the house soon, stopped them from going too far with each other.

Nina wouldn’t put it past Edith to walk right into the bathroom to see John, even if he and Nina were both naked.

Nina and John both wore jeans and soft t-shirts. Nina blew dry her hair and curled it with a flat iron before applying her makeup minimally and the fastest she had ever had to apply it before. She didn’t like meeting John’s family without her ‘face’ on. The makeup was a bit of shield for her, against what she might hear from John and his family.

Nina applied foundation and mascara. Next came a gold sheen of an eye shadow color on her eyelid and a darker brown crease shade. A fluff of blush on each cheek and some gold hoop earrings were followed by Nina applying a pink lip gloss. She met John in the kitchen so relieved and overjoyed he was home. She could almost cry, but she didn’t. She needed to hear John’s story about Norman and life in-between life and death.

“You must be starving,” Nina told John.

“I had a huge steak dinner last night with Norman. I’m okay right now, it’s not even lunch. The fridge is packed with food I see though.” John commented.

“I’m happy you’ve been eating. It bothers me when you don’t eat because you’re worried, sick, or keeping secrets.” John remarked smiling knowingly at Nina.

Nina smirked.” I think you’re the one with secrets right now John; not me.” John laughed amused.

“I tried to eat when I remembered and at first, I forgot a lot. Rianne has been terrific and she grocery shopped for me when I was grieving. She’s literally, the only way I was able to handle losing you. She believed me when I said you were alive out there, even when your family stopped believing me.” A stray tear leaked down Nina’s cheek.

John stopped her tear with his thumb, ” I’m here now. I couldn’t come back any sooner, but I would’ve  if I knew how. I was stuck and sleeping in a vibrant place. You know what it was like you said, because you were there in that place in-between life and death that night when Talise’s bite poisoned you.”

“Yeah,” Nina nodded remembering. “It was tranquil and I had no troubling thoughts or worries. There was so many beautiful colours. Bold and magnificent colours there isn’t enough words in the human language to describe.”

“Exactly,” John said. “I’m glad I didn’t know how gone you were that night. When I was ended up in the place of colours, I couldn’t imagine so many colours existed. There were colours there and they don’t exist here on earth.”

“I was so fatigued and in that place I could rest and be done with the whole curse, with everything. I wanted to give in and I let myself for a long time, but then I pictured you and I was awake and I was wandering an endless beach.” John said.

He leaned against the kitchen island and Nina stood close to him. She smelled his woodsy and citrus cologne and breathed it in. It was the scent on the shirt she’d been sleeping with for over four-months.

“I’m ecstatic your back John and grateful. If remembering me brought you out of that in-between place, I’m glad.” Nine hesitated,” Do you think it was God who brought you to the beach, not only your thoughts?”

“I don’t know. Norman wasn’t God but I have the feeling he might have worked for God. He saved Rianne Norman told me and he was there to help me. He said he can take many forms. He came into my cottage, my home on the beach. After supper and beers, he answered all my questions and taught me a few things too.”

“Just like that?” Nina questioned.”What did Norman say exactly? You seem lighter now and carefree. I know it’s probably because the curse is gone, but I think something else has changed too. Just a feeling I have knowing you as I do.” Nina surmised, smiling contently.

John didn’t answer right away. He kissed Nina on the lips a few times, lingering over her mouth and Nina could tell he was holding back, trying to be gentle. She began to feel warm and she ached for John inside as heat and attraction simmered between them. Nina had missed John incredibly and wanted to demonstrate to him how much she had missed him in their bed.

John smiled at Nina chuckling: “I want to too Nina, but right now isn’t a good time with my family arriving soon.” He pulled back from kissing her. John must have seen the wounded look in Nina’s eyes, because he brushed her cheeks with his thumbs. Nina put her head against John’s chest, hearing his heart beat was comforting and his hug calmed Nina.

“Tell me more,” Nina said after a while, stepping back from John’s arms and peering up at him. John gently moved back from Nina some more and leaned against the kitchen island once again. Nina stood in front of him, hands in her jean pockets, full of curiosity.

“Well, I told you about Talise. She’s not dead. I’m not sure how. Norman said Talise saw something in Jordan that night. She broke the curse and she let Jordan kill her. This makes Talise redeemable,” John muttered, his anger at Talise present.

“Talise told me that the curse was a deeper magic than the magic she possessed. It was why she couldn’t save you John.”

“Indeed, I’m quite sure the curse magic and other magic is deeper than Talise’s magic. Norman said he was a kind of magic . . . Anyways, about Talise and Jordan, Norman said what Talise saw in Jordan was like what I saw in you when I first met you at The Manhattan.”

“Really?” Nina said shocked. John shrugged.

“I don’t understand it but Norman said Talise was Jordan’s responsibility the same way you are mine. I have tell Jordan what Norman told me. I’m scared to say anything to him. Norman explained about the ring Talise put her soul in for Jordan and the dagger that altered after Jordan killed Talise.”

” Jordan will be okay,” Nina said.”He hasn’t been in a good place since he thought you died but I think having his older brother back will make him much happier.”

“He despises Talise as I said,  I don’t know how he’ll ever see her as more than an evil sea witch. Honestly, I don’t know if can see her as anything but an evil person, despite what she did in the end that night.” Nina admitted. John nodded in agreement.

“What else did Norman say?” Nina asked. John sighed, wishing he could keep some of what Norman told him to himself. But John knew he had to be truthful with Nina, in this most significantly

“Norman said, I had no faith. He referenced a Bible verse John 1:5 which talks about light always shining in the darkness and chasing it away. It’s a verse I remembered from Sunday School.”

“No faith in God?” Nina said. ” I know you have faith in God John. You told me He was the only one looking out for you when everything in life goes badly for you. You go to church too. I went with you a few times if you recall.” Nina said.

“It wasn’t only faith in God, Norman was telling me about. He told me I was missing the bigger picture of life, so caught up in details and my own problems. Makes sense I guess, I’m an editor by craft.” John mused.

“But Norman also said I didn’t have faith my curse would ever be broken. He told me about you telling Rianne about people wanting magic solutions but not believing in them.”

Nina smiled. “It’s one of my favourite quotes from Alice in Wonderland. And yes, I believe in magic both good and bad.”

“Norman said I didn’t believe the curse could have good magic. I didn’t have faith God would work things out for me. I didn’t have faith I would live when the curse was broken. I didn’t have faith in you, that we could ever spend our lives together. I didn’t believe in my dreams.”

John appeared tired to Nina again, but she thought it was more the weight of finally having unburdened himself of the truths Norman had revealed to him, that had exhausted him. She hoped the lightness John felt earlier would return.

“Was Norman right John?” Nina asked.

“At the time, he was exactly right. I didn’t have faith in much of anything. It’s why I spent a good seven or eight-years doing nothing but working and going through women. Even when I met you and I hoped for more, I thought keeping you was a long shot.”

“When I knew I loved you and believed you were met for me, Talise was back causing trouble and targeting you. I always thought it wouldn’t work out in the end because Talise wouldn’t let me go until I was dead.” John admitted.

Nina patted John’s arm soothingly before grabbing his hand with her smaller one. ” Before you went away that night, you didn’t have much faith. You were afraid for me and you broke up with me. You loved me I know, but you didn’t believe that their could be a good side to magic, that a curse broken might end well.”

Even the magic Talise was wielding wasn’t always wicked. Your Dad said that night we all had dinner, most sea witches use both light and dark magic. They need a balance. When Talise became evil, the effects of malevolent magic on her were obvious.”

“I think that goes with your belief in magic too. You can’t believe it’s all bad, that a curse would end tragically. You needed to believe in life and have faith things would work out in the end for the good. I believed you would return time. I’m not saying I never doubted you would come home, but today you did. My prayers and faith rewarded.” Nina squeezed John’s hand tighter.

“I know. I understand now my Nina. It’s why Norman told me the Bible verse from John. No matter how dark it seems, light is always there to drive the darkness back, to drive evil back. It even drove the darkness out of Talise.” John said.

Nina smiled.”I told Talise as I lay dying from her poison bite, she had a choice. She didn’t have to be evil. She changed in that moment. So even though she cast the curse originally, and had little power over its eventual outcome, light and benevolent magic won out.”

John gazed at Nina admiring her soft skin and the way her thin T-shirt hung on her breasts. He noted how her waist dipped in and her hips flared, creating the beautiful curves of her body. ”

“You’re amazing, stubborn, smart, and beautiful Nina. I can’t believe not having faith, almost made me lose everything, lose you.” John reached for Nina, grasping her around her waist and holding her as close as he could while tracing her face with his lips.

Nina could feel the inescapable and enthralling heat and electricity moving between her and John. She ran her hand under John’s shirt and gasped at the feel of his smooth naked skin. John’s lips kissed Nina’s neck teasingly before he bit her gently. His kisses moved up Nina’s jaw about to meet her lips and his hands were under her T-shirt, ready to tear it off her when the door bell rang.

Not waiting a moment, John’s family burst in through the door.

Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers – Part 2 – A Whisp in the Wind

Even as a spirit, Bernice told stories well. Bernice’s hands circled her own throat miming a squeezing action and then her eyes rolled back in her head as if she were dying.

” I get it Bernice, I understand someone killed you but who? Please talk!” Jackie heard the whisper of her sisters ghostly voice finally in the wind, “Davey . . .”

” Davey killed you Bernice? I mean he’s a prick but he hasn’t got the smarts, has he?” Bernice began to cry and pointed to Jackie. The wind howled and the bell of the old church down by the park began to ring. In the howl of the wind and noise of the bell she could barely hear the force evident behind her sister’s ethereal voice” HE WANTED US BOTH DEAD!”

Bernice’s concern was evident as she curiously began to fade into thin air. It was daylight and the park was now empty. Bernice had come at an odd time in the day as Jackie was walking. Then, Jackie looked towards the church bell which had rung its last ring and she realized she was vulnerable.

Writing 101 – Ann’s Engagement Ring Part IV of A Letter to Ann)

It had been 2 months since Ann had been at work as David’s Assistant or had been David’s girlfriend. It had been 2 months since Ann had found that awful letter that Cameal the receptionist had placed on the park trail for Ann to find and believe that David had written. ” 2 months,” Ann murmured aloud. She rummaged through her purse looking for a particular object.

It was a platinum ring with a pear-shaped diamond from Tiffany’s. She adored this ring. It was the engagement ring David had given her when he had proposed to her all those months ago. Yet she had run from him, afraid to trust him. Afraid of a little receptionist who had seemed to her the ideal young women, the women David should want.

Ann was 33-years-old now and not in her 20’s anymore. She had the tiniest little wrinkles appearing around her eyes from squinting and smiling. Her skin did not quite hold that youthful and baby-faced glow that those in their 20’s had. But she wasn’t old. Far from it her life was just beginning.

After leaving David, Ann had needed time to think. So she had taken her vacation time, 6 weeks plus two weeks from the year before and David had not objected. She had taken off and done what she had always wanted to do as a 20 something. She had gone to Europe and visited France, Germany, and Britain.

She had seen so many beautiful Cathedrals, places where you could feel God’s spirit and the spirit’s of the Saints, humming in the air in a peaceful reverent tune. She had been shopping at too many expensive boutiques in Paris and all over France. She was a well paid Executive Assistant and she had saved her money for so long a little shopping didn’t hurt. Not a few Louboutin shoes, Dior Dresses, and some lingerie that David would love to see her in, that she felt terrific in — La Perla and some brands she did not know.

Ann planned to go back to David but she had just needed time to think about their relationship, about their future. She didn’t want to wait long to get married with girl’s like Cameal in the world ready to spoil one’s plans. Ann didn’t care what her and David did as long as a few close friends and family were at the wedding. Ann also wanted a dog and sometime soon, little one’s to play with the dog. She had such big dreams.

She stepped off her flight out of EIA into Edmonton, into the cold Alberta winter.  Ann wondered if everything would be okay. Crossing her fingers she drove home, not to her condo, but her and David’s home. She dropped most of her luggage at the door and grabbed her purse and her carry on and went up the stairs only to find that at 5 am David was gone, probably already at work. She wasn’t sure if she should stay but Ann didn’t really have much of a choice as she hadn’t slept in hours. She slipped her ring on her hand and fell asleep a top the covers of the bed. She hoped David was okay.

David massaged the temples of his head and ran his fingers through his short dark brown hair. He was one of the partner’s at the law firm he worked at. He owned part of the company and he missed his Assistant like crazy. Where was Ann now, he wondered? She had emailed him now and then with little pictures of her doing things in Europe, with a croissant, below the Eiffel Tower, By Buckingham Palace, at some church somewhere in Germany.

2 months were such a long time for Ann to be gone away from him. and away as his Assistant. Ann’s filler at work was so slow and all over the place. She was no Ann. He was getting behind at work and to top it all off that little whore Cameal had accused him of sexual harassment that day she had chased Ann from his home.

David loved Ann. There was no question when it came to her and Cameal that there was no competition. Cameal was some immature girl. He had explained so much to HR and and it had been tough to convince Blanche the head of HR that he hadn’t done anything to Cameal except place the letter she had written to Ann in her inbox to show her he knew what she was up to. Blanche had sympathized with David and said Cameal had been getting complaints left and right about her work. She had been a good worker but now she just seemed to flout everyone except David. Blanche found it curious that she would all of a sudden turn on David.

David had told Blanche everything that had happened between him, Cameal, and Ann. Blanche knew of course that David had a relationship with Ann and there were no rules against office romances but HR liked to be informed if it was serious. He was set to get a new Assistant anyways, and Ann would move up in the office after they got married. If they got married? Was that possible still?

Blanche assured David that Cameal had crossed many boundaries with different men at work and that she would be ‘taken care of immediately’. David was not in trouble, Cameal was no longer a threat, and David figured he would take the day off and go home and sleep. He hadn’t slept much since the harassment accusation and the last picture Ann sent, a smile on her face, as she took a selfie on the flight home. Maybe she came to my place, our place, he thought, hopefully.

Ann awoke to kisses on her neck and face. She stretched and smiled even though she knew she looked bad, makeup all smeared, and jet lag showing under her eyes. She moved her head back to receive more kisses. She dreamt it was David and he smelt so good, citrusey and woodsy like his cologne. She moved her hand up in this dream to stroke David’s cheek and felt the stubble there, moved her hand up further felt his soft hair and then the frame of his glasses. He must be tired, she thought, he never wears glasses.

She didn’t protest as dream David slid her out of her jacket and shoes and under the covers of the bed and perhaps it was then when she was snuggled beside him that she felt for real this time, his breath on her neck and continued little kisses.

“Your back Ann” David rasped “your really hear, for good?” he wondered aloud. She turned around and opened her eyes so she could see David. Between her thick lashes she saw his dear face and began to trace it with her fingers, “for good” she whispered. And they both slept the sleep of the dead that day, David’s finger tracing the platinum band of Ann’s ring as he fell asleep.

Cameal was in tears. Life wasn’t fair. She was fired. HR had not believed her harassment claim about David calling it bogus and insulting to David who had been very kind to Cameal given the circumstances. She had received 6 months severance and been told to pack up her things at her desk. She did this as she wept and regretted having ever met David or that ugly Ann. Fine. Go ahead be with her David, she thought. You two deserve each other. And they did.
