It’s 1962 and Miss Parker’s exotic beauty temporarily shocks her grade seven class into silence. She has lovely dark skin and striking eyes lined with kohl. The boys are held speechless by her attractive appearance. Her bold cranberry lipstick and a fashionably revealing outfit are what her female student’s desire to wear.

Her student’s realize how interesting, knowledgable, and outgoing their new teacher is and walk home each day telling their parents Miss Parker is wonderful. The parents are thrilled for their children.

Nevertheless, things change when the parent’s realize at parent teacher interviews, Miss Parker is black woman. Race was not a feature of Miss Parker their children noticed as racism is not ingrained within a child — it is taught.

#OctPoWriMo – Day 2 – Kyrielle – “Facing The Void” #amwriting #poetry

Day 2 Prompt – The Void

As writers, and especially poetry writers, I believe we dive into the void on a regular basis to find the words, to gain perspective, to hibernate and more. How have you used the void? What does, “the void” mean to you?

They said the void was some place dark,

A place to fear, our thoughts to erase.

Dove into the whirlpool, left my mark.

Change begins, fearless the void face.

——-

Told me, the void was nothingness,

I found vision, a sign of grace.

Everything made sense, was goodness,

Change begins, fearless the void face.

——–

Pathways curved, I yet had to fight,

Marathon as life, mine a race.

Engaged in battle, with small might.

Change begins, fearless the void face.

——-

I experienced some awful times,

Then settled back, whirlpool escaped.

Came out stronger, knowing my prize.

Change begins, fearless the void face.

——–

Peace and clarity, I gained true.

Mind relaxed, no longer head case.

Spirit guided me, wings of lace.

Change begins, fearless the void face.

Personally, I’m not a runner. I have always hated it. But I know some people such as my Dad for instance, love it. I don’t understand it. Even when I was fit, I much enjoyed the elliptical, skating machine, or an exercise class as compared to running.

I didn’t mind it so much in volleyball or basketball in high school. I think because we only did so much running, and the rest was practicing skills. Not to mention, for many years of school, I attended schools near the river valley.

Everybody thinks that is great, but I had allergies, and running through the river trails ended up with me wheezing.

Anyways, here is three quotes for you runners out there.
