———

You might think it peculiar to let kids,

Be small, to let them be silly, weird,

When most of their life is spent in,

‘Adulting,’ learning how to,

Be big, responsible,

I say as Auntie:

Let them be them,

Creative,

Full of,

Fun.

——

Let,

Them be,

Wild beings,

Think of stories,

Imaginative,

And implausible, but —

Believe them because you’re,

Playing along, taller tales,

Demonstrate creativity,

For kids, it keeps them young, growing older.

——

Think of tilting towers, Big Ben in blue –

Green prairie sky, a storm brought him here.

But he bends, tilts just because and,

Storm brought along a grand,

Gothic cathedral roof,

Pointed top I’m sure —

Missed somewhere; hot —

Air balloon,

Holds our,

Dreams.

—–

Where,

We live

With such rich,

Possibility.

Imagining,

Tall towers floating in,

Moon lit skies, princesses,

Saving themselves, jumping from,

Clouds, the moon indeed smiling so proud,

Girls and boys — escape from their own towers.

——

Locked fortresses floating, new challenge,

Escaping by flying pirate ships old,

Never turning back to the light,

Of a trapped home, wishing most,

To be little, secure,

Not worry about,

A dragon’s fire,

A port in,

Mid-air,

Light.

—–

Sought,

In night’s,

Binding grip,

All children search,

For understanding,

A hug and kiss when they’re lost,

Hurt, or at least a safe place works.

For home; mom’s gentle touch when,

Nightmares thrive; become to real, kids hide;

But parents are there, provide a haven.

——-

So encourage kids to harness their,

Creativity, to paint and draw,

To find their passions in life, so —

Maybe they can live them too.

Or find a haven in,

Their talents, their skills,

Urging away,

Stress; relief,

‘Cause life,

Hurts.

—–

So,

We teach,

Live your dreams,

Let them unwind

You; be as free as

Butterflies; don’t be tacked,

To a board on the wall kept.

Fly lovely, safe, remembering,

Humanity is indeed so —

Delicate at times; you’re not invincible.

—–

But in the power of the imagination,

You can always escape the threads,

Binding you to reality.

You can have liberty,

Smile, eat your cake too,

And hopefully,

Your partner,

The one who,

Loves you,

Most.

—–

Has,

Their own,

Inner child,

Understands and,

Knows, love is gentle,
Love is fiery, bold,

Love and creativity,

Both hold; let you be dauntless, free,

Full of life, security to —

Be held; be wild both as adult and child.

Music Challenge: NonFiction – “The Christmas Concert” #nonfiction #music #logdriverswaltz

Thank yo to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting this week’s music challenge based off the old-timey song: “The Log Driver’s Waltz.”

——-

——–

———

Anna sighs as the teacher tells the grade-one students in her class to find a partner of the opposite gender to dance with for a Christmas concert song they will also sing.

Anna is a bit chubby. She doesn’t eat much if any junk food. Her parents are careful about feeding their kids candy because children on Anna’s Dad’s side of the family have a tendency to be chubby. They tell Anna she has those genes. Her weight bothers her even at a young age. Anna doesn’t think she is fat compared to some chubbier girls around her age; she sees how much and what they eat — often fruit roll ups and McDonald’s Happy Meals.

Nevertheless, the boys pick on Anna for her weight and they don’t like her as they like some of the smaller and cuter girls. She’s not unpopular but she’s not popular either. Anna is nice and gets along with almost everyone. She is smart and can read better than most kids in her class. Her worst problem is a tendency to cry if she gets into trouble.

Anna peers around the music room and sees the other boys and girls have partnered up. The only boy left is Devon. Anna and Devon look at each other unhappily. The teacher, Mrs. Nette, pushes them together and starts to teach the six-year-olds to waltz. Both the boys and girls think co-ed dancing is kind of icky, unless you happen to end up dancing with someone one you have a crush on.

Devon looks at Anna and sneers. He was her friend Roxeanne’s little brother. Roxeanne lived by Anna’s house and she was a good friend who was a couple grades ahead of Anna.

Anna peers up at Devon and tries to take his hand as Mrs. Netted instructed, but Devon doesn’t want to touch her. He makes a fuss to the teacher. Mrs.Nette will have none of Devon’s complaining and makes him put his one hand around Anna’s shoulder and the other around her waist. He looks dejected and Anna sighs, not liking Devon touching her; he’s a  jerk. She doesn’t want to look bad on stage because of Devon.

Mrs. Nette turns on the music. The song is called, “The Log Driver’s Waltz.” The girl knows it because Sharon, Louis, and Bram, sing it on the kid’s music tapes her Mom plays in their van.

“Come on Devon. Just do it. It’s not that bad. If you do a good job Mrs. Nette will stop watching you so much,” Anna says perturbed. Devon frowns at Anna and nods hestitantly. The class practices dancing to the song and then singing it a few times. They do this every music class until the Christmas concert. It’s tricky having to waltz and sing as well. Anna is nervous because her grandpa and grandma will be at her first Christmas concert. She wants to do well for them.

At the dress rehearsal Devon sneers at her, “I’m not even going to be here for the Christmas concert. I’m going to be at my Dad’s; I hate you.” She shrugs, Devon is always angry and often lashes out. Anna thinks it’s because his parents are divorced. She tells Mrs. Nette about Devon not being at the concert. The music teacher phones Devon’s Mom who assures her, he’ll be there.

Anna chooses a pretty dress to wear to the concert. She knows how to waltz even though she isn’t much of a dancer. She waves to her parents and grandparents sitting in the audience before going back stage. Then the grade-one class lines up to go out onto the stage. She doesn’t see Devon anywhere. Anna tugs on Mrs.Nette’s hand and she tells her, “Devon’s not here.”

“Well, will put you in the back and you can pretend you’re waltzing with a partner,” Mrs. Nette says. Anna frowns, not happy about the situation. Mrs. Nette grabs a boy from another class who is in grade-two, “Here you remember how to waltz don’t you?” She asks the new boy. He nods looking at Anna and taking her hand.

The music starts and all the grade-ones starting dancing and singing to “The Log Driver’s Waltz.” Mrs. Nette puts Anna and the grade-two boy filling in for Devon in the back of the stage. The grade-two boy isn’t a great dancer, and Anna isn’t great either but she does most of the leading anyways.

As the grade-ones start singing the second song they had practiced, Anna sees her Grandpa laughing and smiling. It didn’t matter what the grade-one class did, the audience thought it was adorable.

Anna remembered the “Log Driver’s Waltz” always; it became stuck in her head. Twenty-five-years later, she still finds herself humming the tune occasionally and remembering Devon –such an angry little boy.

Tale Weavers Fairytale Prompt: Enchanted Apples #taleweaver #amwriting #fiction

Thanks to Mind Love’s Misery’s Menagerie for hosting Tale Weavers Fairytale prompt. This months prompt is: a tale with fruit.

——-

Mara Eastern
——

Jared was the kind of man who made any woman who saw him stop and stare. He was classically handsome, with blond hair and blue eyes; he was told he resembled a thirty-five-year-old Brad Pitt.

Jared was blessed, but he didn’t realize how much. He owned his dream company, made tens of millions of dollars early in his career, had mansions all over the world, cars of various makes and models from classics to brand new, as well as, any toy he desired — skidoos, motorcycles, dirt bikes, (etc).

Yet, Jared was alone in life. He had no emotional relationship with any woman he dated. He felt many women and men were worthless beings, wasting their life focusing on helping others and building relationships which, ultimately, ended.

Jared believed he was “better” than other people due to his wealth, prestige, and attractiveness. He knew he needed a partner, a woman who had similar qualities to him. He also knew it wouldn’t be a love match for he had no love in his heart.

One night at a charity reception, a hideous girl named Ali approached Jared. She carried with her a basket of the most delicious looking apples.

People were drawn to their ruby shine and many people begged Ali to have one of her apples. Yet, they cringed at her repulsive faces and body, ravaged by burns and disease.

Ali’s form was bent and crippled and she dragged behind her a club foot. Her eyes were beady and when she opened her mouth, she revealed rotten teeth with many missing. Her basket of apples, in fact, was the only attractive quality about Ali with exception of her beautiful golden hair. It was thick, lustrous, and reached her waist.

Jared was appalled when Ali approached him but he noticed her mouth watering basket of apples. As with everyone, he was drawn to them. But Jared didn’t understand why Ali carried the apples around, not willing to give them to anyone, despite offers of large sums of money and contacts for proceeders to alter her appearance.

——

“What do you want?” Jared asked Ali, gazing down on her in her repulsive ugliness.

Ali laughed. Her voice deceivingly youthful, “I can give you anything you desire with these apples. What you want the most will be yours with only one bite.”

“Yeah right,” said Jared. “Why would you give me a bite of one of your apples? And for free? You’d be stupid to do that.”

Ali giggled,”I didn’t say I’d give you a bite for free. Nothing’s free in this world as you well know.”

Jared peered again at the apples which called to him, a sirens song from forbidden fruit,”What’s your price hag?”

Ali smiled and her rotten teeth and foul breath made Jared take a step-back. He knew what the ugly woman would request, but for some reason, he let her ask for what she wanted.

“I want a kiss. A real one,” Ali said.”For a kiss I will give you one apple. Perhaps, then, you will find the woman who will truly be your other half.”

Jared gasped, afraid the horrid woman could read his mind. He nodded to her and said: “I accept your bargain.”

“My names Ali,” she said and drew closer to Jared. She stopped for a moment,”This will only work if you truly desire a partner to love, with a pure-heart.”

Jared brushed Ali’s words aside, “My intentions are honourable enough.” He tried not to gag as Ali’s mouth drew closer. But he stared at her gorgeous red apples and imagined an apple in his mouth; it was how he managed kissing Ali.

Her lips were dry as they rasped against his. Ali’s tongue dove in his mouth and when she groaned, he felt as if he might throw-up. She bit his lip and she laughed when he cringed.

When Ali stopped kissing Jared, she stepped back, her mouth in a mischievous smile. She drew a beautiful ruby apple from her basket and presented it to Jared with gnarled fingers.

Jared grabbed the apple, greedy for its taste. He gorged on it as if he was Eve and the apple, the forbidden fruit in Eden.

Suddenly, both Jared and Ali began to glow with white light. While Jared withered, developing scars and burns all over his skin, Ali became stunningly beautiful. She became a curvaceous and breath-taking woman in her prime. She attracted the crowd in the room to her presence.

Jared’s hair had fallen out and his expensive clothes hung on him as his muscle tone disappeared. In minutes, no one recognized Jared; he was as ugly and as repulsive as Ali had been. His only remaining attractive feature were his bright blue-eyes.

A beautiful golden haired goddess stood before Jared. She sighed, grasping his scarred hand.

“I told you Jared. You had to want what you desired with a pure-heart. You had to be ready to love the perfect woman for you; but you love no one but yourself. I was the perfect woman for you, but you loath me. You called me a hag.”

Jared laughed, “You were disgusting and now you made me disgusting too.”

Ali let go of Jared’s hand, offering the basket of apples to him:

“Only, give an apple to the most loathsome and disgusting person you can find on the earth. Remember appearances are not everything and under the most beautiful and sometimes successful people, hides a monster,” Ali warned.

“You’re a monster Jared, but you have been given a chance to redeem yourself. To learn to love and be human, until you find the most terrible woman and find the smallest glimmer of hope inside her. She will either become your truelove and save both you and her, or become as you have, taking your place. You will return to your former privileged life and body, but with a changed heart. You will know when you find the right person and will wander the earth until then.”

Ali dropped Jared’s hand and disappeared into the crowd. No one noticed him for once. They only noticed Ali who had become his philanthropic sister. She became owner of all his wealth, company, mansions, and life, when he disappeared.

Jared wandered the earth an evil gnarled old man for years and years. Some say, he still wanders today. No one knows if he’s changed.

——-

Thank you to K.L. Caley from new2writing for hosting #Maydays prompts. Today’s prompt is good madness.

——-

http://www.pinterest.com

——

I love that you have that —

Good madness, a bit of quirk.

Laughing and smiling,

I’d rather have you a bit crazed,

I worry when you’re lost, sad.

——

When you’re mad I know you’re —

Alive; your heart beating genius.

Found in Wonderland,

Where my favourite Alice went,

Your my Mad Hatter; my match.

——

Not everyone would get —

Your peculiar mind which bends, forms.

Brilliant, but held,

By societies normal.

I love your real craziness.

——

Genuinely you,

I never worry you’re fake.

You always reveal,

A hint of absurdity,

You finish my sentences.

—–

Your crazy begins,

It meets with my own and we’re —

Blessed to be us; home.

In our otherly world lost,

We are the best kind of mad.

Part 6: Never Again – Finding Peace.

Please read Part 5 of ‘Never Again’ here.

Part 6: Never Again – Finding Peace.

(Three-Months Later).

“Kasia, are you finished packing?” Jolene asked her daughter.

“Yeah, I’m good Mom, but I had to get another suitcase. I did more shopping then I thought.” Kasia was huffing and puffing as she dealt with her suitcases, bringing them outside Chateau Blanc for Luc to load in an SUV.

“I’m not ready to leave Mom. I’ve had such a fantastic time here, seeing Auntie Cathy and hanging out with Damon.” Kasia sighed. ” I can’t believe I didn’t meet him until a month and a half ago . . .and you’re leaving Luc behind too?” Kasia exclaimed with surprise.

“Kasia,” Jolene said. “We have to go back to Ottawa for awhile at least. Auntie Cathy will be moving into a condo close to where we live soon. She only has to finish training her replacement event planner and do a bit of packing.” Jolene cleared her throat reaching for a bottle of water in her purse.

” Luc owns Chateau Blanc but he’s found an experienced caretaker to keep the place running. Luc’s a trained architectural Engineer and he’s taking a job at an Engineering Firm in Ottawa. He’ll have a great deal of input on projects and doing them to LEED standards around the world. You know he is passionate about the environment…” Jolene said shrugging with a smile.

“What about Damon? How will I see him. If I’m supposed to travel around with you and have a tutor for high school, when will I see Damon?” Kasia asked worriedly. “I’ve been saving money to travel. You know, the money I made modelling for La Petite Mademoiselle and a few other shoots, Simon, your agent, could find for plus-sized models in Nice… How will you see Luc if we’re always travelling?” Kasia asked. Jolene smiled as Kasia peppered her with questions. They’d both been extremely occupied the last few weeks.

“There is going to be some changes, Kasia. I’m not going to model anymore. I will have business trips with La Petite Mademoiselle in Europe. I have hired a couple of Presidents for the Canadian and United States chains. Judy thought it was a great idea, she wants to travel more with her husband.” Jolene explained.

” Judy and I will be dealing with our expansion into France and into other select European cities. You will have occasions where you will be able to come to France with me or Luc and see Damon, while you work on Grade Ten material with your tutor. Damon maybe in Grade Twelve, but he also has his last year of high school to get through in Nice.” Jolene reminded Kasia.

“I think, it’s best to keep most of your modelling work for La Petite Mademoiselle, until you are eighteen. I don’t want to overwhelm you when you need to focus on school.  Not to mention, I would like for you to still put a shift in every week in our flagship store in Ottawa when we are home. It will help you to know how our company works on the ground level.” Jolene added. Kasia sighed, not completely happy with her Mom’s solution for Kasia’s schooling and work. Would she get to see Damon enough between work and school? What if Damon forgot about Kasia for some other girl?

“So, if you’re busy overseeing things in Europe, how will you organize your schedule with Luc’s” Kasia asked Jolene.

Jolene’s face lit with a smile. “I have something to tell you… I’m getting married to Luc! He asked me last week. It was so hard for me not to tell you. I wanted to wait for the perfect time, I suppose that’s now.” General shrieking ensued and the details of the proposal were shared.

” Luc will be doing some projects in Europe as well, so all three of us will often be back at the Chateau Blanc and Auntie Cathy is welcome, whenever she wants to come along.” Kasia was taken aback. Everything seemed to be falling into place. Kasia was overjoyed Luc would be her step-dad. Her only Dad, as far as Kasia was concerned. She missed Damon alread, even though he was chatting with Luc. He had come to the Chateau to see Kasia before she went back to Canada. “Damon,” Kasia called. . .

——

An iPhone began ringing and Jolene felt her pocket buzz. Her face went pale when she saw the number on the phone. It was Scott’s work number. Jolene felt sick. She hadn’t heard from Scott since she left Nice over five-years-ago. Jolene wasn’t ready to talk to Scott. But perhaps, she should accept his call and tell Scott once and for all, to leave her alone.

“Hello” Jolene said quietly, walking away from Kasia.

“Hello Jolene,” Scott said.”Nice of you to get in touch with me when you were here.” Jolene said nothing at first.

“Why would I want anything to do with you Scott. I don’t love you anymore and I’m not attracted to you. Our time together is a lifetime away, I’m getting married.” Scott laughed

” So, I heard. It took you a long time. It was difficult getting over me, huh?” Scott said.

” And why is that?” Jolene questioned Scott.

“Because you will always have me in our daughter, Kasia. She looks a lot like me you know. You should have told me about her.” Scott said sounding wounded.

” How did you find out about Kasia? You can’t have her. She’s mine, my daughter — not yours. You wanted me to abort her.” Jolene said furiously.

“Kasia came to visit me a couple months ago. She wanted to meet me. I can’t blame her. She’s a smart girl and tracked me down.” Scott remarked.

“Damn it,” Jolene said, “Auntie Cathy told her everything. I knew we should have kept our mouths shut about you, Scott. You stay away from Kasia, I mean it! I can afford a great lawyer these days so don’t try anything. You are not allowed to see Kasia until she’s eighteen. Then, it is her choice, unfortunately.”Jolene yelled into her phone.

“Relax, Jolene. I don’t want anything from you or Kasia. Kasia wanted to meet me but she doesn’t want a relationship with me. She also told me to stay away from her and you.” Scott said hushing Jolene.

” I don’t need Katrina finding out I have an illegitimate daughter, who might be a threat to the money Katrina brought to our marriage. She wouldn’t like it if Kasia inherited anything. Additionally, having somewhat a relationship with my own daughter Sara and my boys is hard enough.” Scott told Jolene, tiredly.

“So, what are you calling about then?” Jolene seethed.

“I need to apologize,” Scott admitted to Jolene.”It was wrong of me to tell you to get rid of Kasia when she was barely a person. I saw her at my office and I’m so thankful you never got the abortion. She’s a beautiful girl and I have no doubt she will be as successful in life as you Jolene.” Jolene couldn’t believe Scott was apologizing.

“Kasia hates me for trying to have her aborted and that bothers me. I couldn’t stand it if my daughter Sara was as mad at me, as Kasia is mad at me,” Scott admitted. “Kasia is also upset because of what I did to you. I can’t change myself  Jolene. I am who I am.” Scott said.

“But, I regret cheating on you the entire time we were together, when you were off modelling. I was never your ‘one,’ and only guy. I’m no women’s ‘one.’ I’m my own guy. I like to be in control and be with whoever I desire. Katrina understands this, she has had a long-time affair with another man. Kasia believes that guy provides for Katrina, what I should be providing for her, love and attention.” Scott said, his voice scratchy. Admitting his faults was hard for him, Kasia had made him think.

” I’m sorry I met so much to you Jolene. I wish I hadn’t met much to you. I would have broken it off sooner, but I had plans…”

“You are and were selfish Scott,” Jolene shouted.” You never cared about my feelings or what I thought about something. You even tried to tell me I was pretending I wanted a baby — which is why I never told you about Kasia.”

” It wouldn’t have mattered had you told me you had had our baby. My Dad said Katrina was the right wife for me. She is in a sense. . . What I wanted to tell you though is for Kasia: Do not let her end up with a guy like me. I told Kasia ‘boys will be boys’ and that men naturally cheat. She called me on it and I thought about it and she’s right, not all men cheat. My half-brother for instance, is faithful to his wife. He works at the company with me.” Scott said.

” Kasia needs to find a guy like my half-brother. Not like me or her Grandpa. And tell her Scott said he will do his utmost to ensure someone like him does not marry her half-sister Sara.” Jolene pressed the phone to her ear. She was amazed at what Scott told her.

“For real, that’s all you want?” Jolene stuttered. “You want Kasia to end up with a kind and faithful partner? You aren’t trying to get me to sleep with you or have an affair with you? You promise to leave Kasia alone, even though I never told you she was your daughter?” Jolene could barely say anything she was so surprised by Scott’s reason for calling. She heard him sigh on the phone.

” As far as I’m concerned Jolene, you and I are done. I have my life and you have yours. We may be connected by Kasia but I promise, I won’t interfere in your lives. If Kasia in the future, wants to contact me so I can help her get into a prestigious university, I can help her, it’s the least I can do.But I have one request Jolene. . . ” Scott’s voice sounded sad to Jolene. She didn’t remember Scott ever sounding emotional.

“Please send, me a picture of Kasia once in awhile on your phone. Not often, just so I know she’s okay.” Jolene couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She kept her voice neutral.

” I can do that, if Kasia doesn’t mind. I will tell her what you said,” Jolene remarked. “I’ll mention you can get her into a prestigious university, no strings attached. And I will definitely make sure she never falls for a man like you.”

“Great. . . gotta go Jolene. My 3:00 pm is here. Good Luck.” Scott said distractedly. Jolene heard the phone click and knew, Scott had moved on. She couldn’t blame Scott for that. It was time for Jolene and Kasia to move on in life as well.

——

I watch my niece as she finishes walking down the aisle. Beneath her veil, her face is glowing. Her eyes are fixed lovingly on her fiancé, Luc Devereaux.

Luc has a giant grin on his handsome face. He told me earlier, “Aunt Cathy, I can’t believe I get to marry Jolene. I always thought and dreamed about her. She’ll be my wife, and I get a beautiful step-daughter too.”

I carefully patted my new nephews arm. He used to be my boss but now, I am his cherished Auntie.”You’re perfect for Jolene and Kasia. You’re all exactly what the three of you needed, ” I tell Luc.

I see Luc take Jolene’s hand and slide on her wedding band. Jolene does the same for Luc. Beautiful Kasia is her Mom’s maid of honour in a couture pink gown.

But Jolene is simply stunning, channeling Grace Kelly. She is the perfect vintage leading lady in her bridal gown, except for one thing. Jolene’s back reveals a tattoo I never knew she had until I helped her change into her dress this morning.

Jolene’s tattoo is a quote that reads: “You never know how strong you are, until being strong is all you have to be.”

Jolene’s tattoo demonstrates all that she has come through in life to be at the the altar with her ‘one,’ Luc. It tells me Jolene will be strong whatever she faces in life. But she isn’t alone. She has Kasia, Luc, and as always, her Auntie Cathy who had the pleasure of walking her cherished niece, down the aisle.

Poem: Acrostic – “Be Mine – Beginnings.”

Acrostic Poetry is where the first letter of each line spells a word, usually using the same words as in the title.
(Note: You can use the last letter of each line instead of you like.)

See Shadow Poetry here for more information.

Be it so that I am allowed to do anything I want for the day — I’m pretending.

Entertain my deepest desires, anything I choose would be so,

Glorious possibilities await my each whim — all things are only a swipe of my finger away.

I would choose to spend my time with you because when I see you, time stands still. You are the one for me. I know it. The equations told me.

Never for long would we be apart; we could be happy you and I in this dystopian world. In a world where the decision is never truly ours.

Not that we have long to decide; in our time, we choose are mates at a glance through intricate mathematical equations and raw physicality.

Inventing our love story through my own creativity and imagining we are more then only strangers with intent to mate.

Not sure how our personalities will rub off on each other; will we be a perfect match or a couple who rips each other to pieces inside and out.

Going to hope that one day you love me, that we can be a family like they had many hundred years ago; going to pray you accept me and love me despite my flaws. I love yours, I’m told.

So, I’ve chosen you by our complicated futuristic mating system, will you choose me and be the one I return home to always. Despite being many ages away.

New Year – Be Present.

http://www.happydiwali2015.org
New Years like Christmas, maybe gone sooner then you think. After nursing hangovers from late nights, booze, or both, the future will become clear on January 2, 2016.

We will all arise from our holiday slumber and the chocolate binging — eating the whole box; the wine and egg nog guzzling (not at the same time); the superfluous shopping; the endless company; the traditions that we practice once a year; the singing of carols and playing of Christmas music; the dressing up in party wear; playing with our new pieces of technology like they won’t be replaced by a newer version soon; and we will pack away Christmas and New Years celebrations for another year.

The Christmas tree will have no ornaments and be put away until next November; the spice and pine candles and trinkets will go away in a box; special dishes and table clothes will go into storage; and the wreaths on our doors won’t welcome anyone anymore. The house will seem bare inside and outside you’ll probably take down your Christmad lights — or turn them off at least. What could be so good about the empty feeling in the house when reality sets in. What’s so important about a New Year anyway?

I’ll tell you,  it’s a chance for change, a new beginning. I’m not going to tell you to make a New Year’s resolution you can’t possibly keep. I have read that the reason people fail so much at their resolutions is due to their high standards. People aren’t setting achievable goals or do not realize that making changes takes time. It is best to break your goals down into little steps. These steps will make your goal more reachable. Keep the end goal in mind, but focus on the little steps along the way. That’s only if your heart is set on a resolution. But something is more important then your resolutions.

I think we all have to stop thinking that when we achieve some lofty goal (say lose 10 lbs) our life will change drastically. We will have all dreams come true! No, reality check. Life is here right now, there is no later without the now. I know it’s yogi talk but I think it is good advice to know: stay present and in the moment through each event of life. People will not remember you for what you said but for what you did. Be present in the lives of your children, your partner, your family, your closest friends and even your suspicious cat or crazy dog. Perhaps, if we are present we will choose where it is wiser to spend are time and with who.

Perhaps, we will stop wasting time and thinking, ‘Should I?’ And instead go, do it! Go travel, buy that expensive pair of shoes; pay off your debts; choose to not work on Sunday’s; find God in a Church; meet new people; take a course; write until your fingers hurt; publish that book; create your own job; have another kid; retire early.  Live life boldly, with zest. You only live once and then we go “into the night.”

And don’t be frustrated when the things in life you want don’t come your way right away. Life takes work, everything takes work and time. You want to stick to your small goals, then be present as you make those milestones; even if you are only going out and walking around the block twice for exercise at lunch. Even if you are trying painting for the first time, pick up a brush. Book those flights to Amsterdam.

So, do I have any resolutions of my own I do? They are small goals. To only eat when I’m hungry and never until I am full. To do 10 minutes of Cardio on the bike or elliptical every week day. And to choose to do things with people rather then buy stuff. To be present.

Unexpected Guests

Prompt: You walk into your home to find a couple you don’t know sitting in your living room, eating a slice of cake. Tell us what happens next.

——-

“Oh, hello.” I jump back surprised. There is a chubby woman with wavy brown hair and blue glasses sitting on the couch. “Not to be rude, but how did you get in the house, no one else is home?”

“The dog let us in” says the women. Us, I suddenly notice the black-haired man beside her. He has light blue eyes and olive skin, a dazzling combination. The women’s eyes are greenish brown and they narrow at me slightly as I look at her boyfriend. He smiles and nods at me not at all perturbed I find him attractive and not perturbed his girlfriend is jealous.

“The dog’s dead” I say smartly. “She has been dead a year and a half. So, how did you get into the house? Who are you guys even?”

“Oh, I’m Michelle and this is my partner Marcus. We’ve been together three years,” she adds as Marcus looks me up and down.

Michelle leans into Marcus and kisses his cheek softly. She twirls his hair at the back of his head and Marcus leans his head away from her. He pats Michelle’s arm and tries to remove her hands.

” Eat your cake, dear” he orders Michelle. Marcus looks at me and smiles widely his gaze resting on my chest. I don’t have much of a chest, this pervert must be desperate.

Then I notice, they’re both eating cake. Huge pieces of soft chocolate cake and chocolate icing with chocolates on top. My favourite cake from my twenty-seventh Birthday. I haven’t been able to find this kind of cake since I finished the last slice in July three years ago.

“Your eating my family’s cake,” I cried “My favourite cake. Where did you find it?”

“Oh this cake?” Michelle purs taking a bite and licking her lips trying to make herself look sexy to Marcus. ” The cake was in the fridge. We didn’t think you’d mind if we ate two pieces.”

Michelle looked at Marcus and encouraged him to eat his cake. They whispered something between them. Marcus was saying something about being able to eat his cake when he likes. I ahemed.

” You need to leave, both of you. You’re not invited here. And it was rude of you to assume you could eat my family’s cake. I don’t mind sharing but you could have atleast asked. Not to mention, that crap about the dog letting you in…” My face is a bit red and I’m tired. I want this couple to leave and soon.

But Marcus brings on the charm:”I’m so sorry Miss?” I ignore him. ” We’ve been travelling along time in the car and Michelle needed to use the washroom. We shouldn’t have touched the cake but we were so hungry from a long day driving. I wouldn’t have done it if I knew you lived here.” Marcus pauses and looks at me blue eyes staring me down. I gag.

” How did you get in really, did I leave the back door open?”

Marcus looks away from me a second then smiles. ” Well I have a few skills, um picking locks. Your lock was easy to pick and the trees in the front yard hid me as I tried to get the door open. Like I said, if I knew you lived here I would have chosen a different house. You are so pretty when you pout.”

Michelle stares daggers at Marcus and then me. “What about me Marcus? Don’t I turn you on. Haven’t I been your girl for three years and put up with all your garbage.”

” Of course you are pretty Michelle. You know I think you’re beautiful in the girl-next-door kind of way.”

Michelle frowned and Marcus patted her leg trying to appear affectionate. He put his arm around Michelle briefly, and kissed her cheek as she had done to him earlier.

“Look enough” I say firmly, “I don’t know you and you’re in my home. I’m trying to be nice but your making it hard. Leave or I will call the police. But eat your cake; don’t waste it. It’s my favourite kind.”

Marcus grins at me and winks. Michelle is looking at the wall an indignant expression on her face.

“You used to say I was hot” she accused Marcus. “You said how lucky you were to have me and that I was a gorgeouse girl. Now you can’t take your eyes off the tramp who lives here and she doesn’t even like you.” Marcus sighed and started to eat his cake slowly.

” I’d eat faster Lady,” I say to Michelle. She gives me the filthiest look and shovels in the cake murmuring about how good it is and how my figure type shouldn’t have chocolate cake. She remarks how I’d probably end up fatter then her if I don’t watch my figure.

” A minute on the lips forever on the hips” she goads me.

” Are you serious, your cake is done now get your ass out of thr house,” I say.

Michelle looks at Marcus who is carefully eating his chocolate cake.”This is really good,” he tells me, ” Sit down and have some cake with me. You will enjoy it so much, as much as you will enjoy my company.” Marcus licks the chocolate off his teeth and smiles at me that certain way again. I thought he was handsome at first but now I’m thinking he’s creepy.”Don’t listen to Michelle, you are stunning.Your body is lush. Michelle is upset because she is pudgy. She put on a little weight lately raiding people’s desserts…”

I didn’t know what to say. Michelle looked like she was going to explode. I was about to tell her what Marcus said was not true and tell her she had a good figure. But I looked at her as she stood and saw the rolls on her stomach and her wide hips. I wasn’t a small women by any means but Michelle was large everywhere but her pretty face. Even still, why would she stay with such a jerk?

And why would a good looking man choose to be with Michelle? Maybe three years ago she wasn’t fat at all. Maybe Marcus’ criticism of her made her want to over eat so much so she gained a lot of weight. I felt torn between feeling sorry for Michelle, being grossed out by Marcus, and wanting them both to go bug someone else.

” I can’t help putting on a little weight Marcus” Michelle murmurs, “I have a thyroid problem and we have to go back to my doctor so I can figure out what to do about it so I won’t be fat anymore. We are never home long enough for me to make a follow-up appointment to my doctor to find out if I need surgery or to get a prescription for my thyroid. We are always going some place you have to go and I never have the energy to go to a gym because I’m worn out from driving.Let’s go Marcus, she doesn’t love you like I do. She doesn’t want you. She won’t take care of you as I do. Let’s go home so I can be skinny for you again.”

Marcus finishes his cake while Michelle triesto soothe him. He doesn’t listen to Michelle. I looked to see the rest of the cake on the coffee table. Half of it was gone. I sighed and looked at Michelle.

” You shouldn’t follow him around. Marcus doesn’t love you as you love him Michelle. You should drive home now, wherever home is, and talk to a doctor about your thyroid. You probably only need to take pills because your thyroid isn’t swollen but you should get your thyroid checked-out before it becomes worse. Ditch this loser, he doesn’t appreciate you. He has been ogling me the whole time and I despise him. He put you down several times. You need to go and you need to go without Marcus.”

Michelle looked at me mesmerized for a moment. She half smiled and shook her head at me as if I was a sad woman she felt sorry for.” I know love” she said “I won’t leave the man I love. He doesn’t want you.  He’s like this with all the pretty girls, but he always comes back to me. Even if I’m fat. You want him like all the others. I won’t let you have him.”

Marcus looked at Michelle and gasped. ” I stay with you because you look after me, not because I love you. You are like a dog, you always stay by my side and do whatever I need. Doesn’t matter if it’s sex or food or whatever. I don’t think you’re attractive. I don’t know if I ever did, when you weren’t fat. That’s why I always go to other women for sex, women who who are pretty enough. I treat them well because they are like me, they are good looking and they have some pride. You have no pride, you do whatever I want, whenever,” Marcus sneered.

He stood up and brushed the crumbs off his lap looking at me apologetically. ” We could have so much fun” he says to me. “You could show me around the city and we could have lots of sex.” Marcus is practically drueling as he talks to me.

I can see Michelle breaking a little more inside with every word he says. He doesn’t want her.

Marcus comes and stands close to me. I am assaulted by the stench of overpowering cologne and he has chocolate smeared on his face.”Baby you have chocolate on your face,” Michelle says without thinking. Marcus looks at her with venom.

” Shut up you Bitch.”

Then he tries to touch my face but I elbow him in the stomach and step away from him. I reach for the phone as a weapon.

“Get out, get out, get out. And Marcus never touch me again you pervert,” I yell.

Marcus looks at Michelle if this is all her fault and turns to me embarassed. He sighs.”Shall we go, ” he asks Michelle, smiling at her again as if he hasn’t verbally abused her.

She looks at Marcus blankley a smile passes her lips. Her face is deathly pale. She shakes her head at Marcus.” I am going. You can find your own way to wherever you are going. It is my vehicle and it has been my money we have been using. I’m cancelling your credit card when I get to the first gas station.” She asks me where that is and I tell her. She nods, a seemingly small women despite her extra weight.

” Have a good trip home” I say ” and good luck with your medical problems. I hope you find answers fast.”Michelle nods a tiny smile gracing her lips.

” I never saw how much he used me until today. I just saw how good looking he was. I saw how good he was in bed. I really loved him but he doesn’t care for me at all. He’s right I have no pride.” I shake my head but she stops me.

” Sorry for eating your favourite cake. I can see why it’s your favourite. It’s delicious.” I shake Michelle’s hand and watch her get into a black car.

Marcus looks around confused then steps out into the street as Michelle pulls out to drive. She screams at him, telling him to get the f$&k out of the way. I laugh as he falls into the snow and Michelle drives off. Marcus looks at me like a dog begging for scraps.

“Go. I am phoning the police this instant. You are a horrible ass and don’t want you in my family’s home ever again. The bus is six blocks up.” I hand Marcus a bus ticket I had on my pocket. I run inside and lock the doors.

Marcus stands in the middle of the icey road for a few moments regarding the bus ticket with unease. Eventually, he walks up the hill by my house and I don’t see him again.

I call the Police anyways and tell them what happened. My details about Michelle are vague. I don’t know if they ever found Marcus. Guys like him use people. He probably found some silly girl who is thinner then Michelle or I.

When my Mom and Dad come home. I explain what happened with one Police officer chiming in often. We clean up the cake and put it in the freezer for another time. I’m not sure it’s my favourite chocolate cake anymore. My Dad calls a locksmith the next day and we receive better locks, ones you can’t pick easily.

The next time I arrive home from being out, I am happy to see the door is locked solid. I still don’t know why Michelle said the dog let her and Marcus inside the house. It was an odd thing to say. Especially considering if said dog was alive her bark would have scared them off. Or the dog would have eaten them. The second option makes me smile as I unlock the door and go inside a quiet house.

Poem: Grow

Growth is a strange thing to watch from a distance; to see your bestfriends when you were young, become ‘adult’adults.

To see the drinking binges slow to every now and then; to not order drinks with dinner because we’re trying to be healthy.

To see your friends not stuck anymore in someplace that was holding them back; to see them educate themselves for work and travel for training.

To see them couple up; to see couples years together break it off; to see some couples get married to people who actually complement them.

To see your friends have babies, one or two or three; to sit at a table where Mommy topics are debated; and staying healthy, eating fresh, organic, vegetables and meat is the score.

To have friends in high school and in university who have passed away; to wonder where they went. To hope that they went to heaven because you know no one is invincible to death.

To have friends who suffer diseases : cancer, MS, and mental illness; depression is a common thing and so is anxiety, yet our awareness that we could have any disease at our age is covered by our blinders.

To have had a job or two in actual grown-up jobs that pay salaries that pay the bills; that you can shop for your own food; take care of a pet; to save and move into a house.

I watch you all growing and I’m proud that you’re grown. I just hope you keep growing and never ‘act’ old. Even though your responsible to your partner now.

I watch from the distance and you don’t see it because I’m slower then you; but I am growing too.

I have to grow in a different way to find balance in my world. I need to grow in spirit and imagine what is possible. I pray to grow just as you do someday.

Poem: Single

Hello, nice to meet you, looking for a soulmate?

Why no, that’s to deep, I just wanted sex.

Did we meet online, when our questionnaires matched us?

Those things don’t mean anything, but we both like Netflix and chill.

Great running into you, will you take my number?

Okay, but we have to be careful, my wife can’t know.

There are many reasons people don’t match up,

I could give you hundreds of scenarios, where things were off-beat.

But it’s no wonder you say, why things don’t work for you.

Your skin isn’t perfect, you aren’t completely svelte, and you haven’t

Shaved your legs since last morning now.

You think your kind of boring, that you don’t have a life,

You work at all hours and your cookings abhorrent.

Everybody’s flawed, and that’s the final truth.

If you don’t love your body, how can someone love it too?

If you don’t think your great, someone else might,  just wait.

You can meet any number of people in many different ways,

But you’ll know that someone in a second, wait and see.

You may not experience it now but it’s only because,

Your becoming the person you’re meant to become.

The right person will take you with all of your flaws,

They won’t have a partner their trying to hide,

They won’t be looking only for the night,

You’ll find if you focus on being the best you,

You’ll be so much happier and attract people too.

Nobodies perfect and these things take time.

So, love your family, and your friends, and your pets;

While you wait, for the rest.
