NaPoWriM0: Poem – Teaching – Lauranelle – “Home Pedicure”

img_1070-2

And now for our prompt (optional, as always)! Many years ago, “didactic” poetry was very common – in other words, poetry that explicitly sought to instruct the reader in some kind of skill or knowledge, whether moral, philosophical, or practical. Today, I’d like to challenge you to write the latter kind of “how to” poem – a didactic poem that focuses on a practical skill. Hopefully, you’ll be able to weave the concrete details of the action into a compelling verse. Also, your “practical” skill could be somewhat mythological, imaginary, or funny, like “How to Capture a Mermaid” or “How to Get Your Teenager to Take Out the Garbage When He Is Supposed To.” Happy writing!

Thanks to NaPoWriMo for the prompt. For more information please see their website. Today’s form of poetry I will be using is a new form called a Lauranelle which you can find more information on at Shadow Poetry.

Lauranelle
The Lauranelle, created by Laura Lamarca, is a hybrid (variation) of both the Villanelle and the Terzanelle forms. The poem is 22 lines in length opposed to the 19-line length of the aforementioned classical forms. Lines MUST be 10 syllables in length and also MUST be in iambic pentameter.Rhyme scheme is as follows: aba bcb cdc ded efe fbf ggA(1)A(2)

Lines 1 and 2 MUST be repeated at Lines 21 and 22.

Poems can either be formatted in stanzas or as a whole piece without line-spacing.

Easy enough to give yourself a pedicure,

Soak your feet in water and epsom salts,

Buy foot file, file calluses, heels forsure.

Trim your nails straight across, good results.

File toenails with crystal file, perfect shape.

Apply oil, push back cuticles, default.

If you’ve experience, trim cuticles, wait,

With nail polish remover, rid oil on nails,

Use buffer on your nails, makes polish take.

Brush on your nail clear base polish, don’t inhale.

It’ll dry fast, apply a good brand of colour polish.

Let dry, apply a second coat, don’t flail.

Once second coat colour dries, find solace.

Apply another coat if colours see-through.

While it dries, apply a clear top coat of polish

Allow your nails to dry an hour or two,

Soak your feet in water and epsom salts,

Later,  if your calluses return on you.

During the week, apply a new top coat.

Moisturize your feet each night and then, gloat!

Writing 101: Day 11 – Coffee Shop Talk

Green-Tea
http://www.rivertea.com
I don`t drink coffee; there is a harsh and bitter flavour to coffee and I don`t think I should be wasting any calories on a drink I don’t enjoy. I like tea. I will buy some speciality tea in a store and drink it for awhile but then I just become tired of it. When I go to a beauty salon, I ask for green tea. I attempt to get that part right, drink green tea because it improves your metabolism.

Once in awhile, I will have skim hot chocolate, but it`s to easy to keep drinking those so I don`t do it often. I have the green tea or I have an unsweetened cold passion fruit tea from Starbucks. It`s as if you were drinking hot tea, except that it is extremely flavourful and cold. Now that you know about what I`d like to drink (don`t worry I`ll get your`s too – chia latte you say), I could tell you a bit about what`s been going on in my life.

My main project has been this Proposal for Residential Furnishings. I have been taking this course all Fall from home to complete my Residential Interior`s Certificate that I began back in 2009. It will be good to be finished the certificate. But I emailed in the paper after fixing the ‘Works Cited’ page. There are all these little details to writing papers and proposals. The biggest challenge is often writing it in the correct format such as MLA or APA. I have been doing my work in Chicago style for awhile now. Blogging and doing articles is more suited to that. So, is free writing. It allows you to do footnotes and endnotes which I think is better then MLA where you include two () at the end of the sentence with the name of the author of the book or article and the number of the page you got the information from. I`m pretty gifted with MLA style because I used it in university and in many courses since. But times have changed, even writing formats, so there are new details to add to the MLA style. But they do have interesting citing tools that will put together bibliographies or a works cited page for you: easybib.com is a helpful site for that. But you will find, you may have to still add certain details once you copy and paste a citation.

But my topic for my proposal is interesting. The exhibit is called: Vanity: Around the Dressing Table. To summarize, our wealthy ancestors wanted to look good, appear powerful, and  fashionable to their peers and those below them in the class system. So, they invented things for the vanity and used little scissors, combs, and perfume vials. Mirrors were very important and their are a lot of superstitions surrounding mirrors, more than seven years bad luck if you break one. Then dressing tables and shaving tables were developed and things such as dressing in a certain way, even in the middle class. The point is, `vanity`is just not about a dressing table but a disposition or attitude that effected people in the past and effects us in the present age. Think about lady’s magazines who popularize a certain look for women or a certain self-image in their pages. Also, our technology makes us vain when we use it to make an image of ourselves on social media or to take a`selfie.`We are a society immersed in vanity. So, maybe I`ll post the paper. I haven`t decided. It`s long and might be boring for people who don`t want to read a lot or are not interested in the history of vanity through historical items I have chosen for this pretend exhibit. But I made up a poster and everything for it. I`m happy with the project and glad it’s done.

Also, I have been blogging like crazy. Writing 101 adds a lot more to write stuff about during the week. I enjoy it but sometimes I have a story in my head and I need to sleep and then I spend until midnight writing and I don`t even realize it. Creativity can be a difficult master.

If you read my story `Dentures`you know about my acidic and grinded down teeth. I have been wearing my mouth guard and taking things seriously. I have slept two nights and it has staid in my mouth. But I must grind my teeth a great deal because I awake with a headache and my teeth hurt. Hopefully, it`s not too late to extend the life of my teeth for sixty years. I’m told by my mother I should start saving for implants now. The whole idea seems horrifying. I had one cavity ever and I hated getting it filled. Now, think about having all your teeth pulled out to put in donated teeth or to not have teeth in your mouth at all — just dentures in the day. That pricks at my vanity.

I have been trying to stay caught up on my favourite TV programs after they have aired and are online. But the internet around my house sucks because everyone is sharing this line for SHAW cable. So, I am watching `Grey`s Anatomy`and the program pauses every few minutes. After `Grey`s`and `How to Get Away with Murder,’ l had enough of the pauses so I went to do something else. But maybe I’ll watch a couple programs tonight.

That reminds me, I have to do my laundry before my Dad comes home and it`s almost 4:30 pm. I am having lunch with a dear friend tomorrow and going to get my nails done on Thursday. Meanwhile, once I get notes again, I will be studying for my final in my class December 1. I also plan to start Christmas shopping if there are some good Black Friday deals. I have a few things I want to get for myself as well.

As for my dating life: It’s nice to be wanted by guys and I have a few who keep bothering me to do stuff with them. The thing is I only have energy to do so much and don`t have energy for relationships or dating right now. I`m flattered, but I`m not interested at the moment. Even when I try, it just never works out. So, that`s on the backburner for now. Maybe in December I will go on a date or two. Or maybe, not. I guess I forget that nothing great ever came from comfort zones. A quote to remember!

Hope things are well with everyone!

A Perfect Manicure or Pedicure

www.kidslovetoknow.com
http://www.kidslovetoknow.com

One of my best childhood memories was painting the antique doll my great godmother had bought me with a sparkly nude coat of nail polish. I thought my doll looked perfect then as she sparkled in the sunlight from my paint job; she looked beautiful. Now I’m sorry I ruined an antique doll in good condition with her original clothes.

As I grew older, I painted my nails finding a way to do it so that my nails looked as perfect as possible as if a professional aesthetician had painted them. By high school I was doing my nails perfectly and sometime around then I began to invest in a good clear top coat which, made it possible for any pedicure or manicure to last a week and a half. And 11 years later I go for manicures sometimes at the salon but most often I paint the nails on my fingers and toes, although often enough I do like to get an actual pedicure at a reputable salon. I like a place on Jasper Ave in Edmonton called the Beauty Lounge.

As I’ve grown up, trends have changed in nail polish. In the last 5 or 6 years we’ve gone from regular nail polish, to gel polish, and to shellac polish. If you can afford it, or are doing something special, shellac polish is the best way to have your fingers and toes painted because shellac nails will last about three weeks if you’re careful with them. But on a regular basis, I like to paint with plain simple nail polish and a top and a base coat. And that’s what I would like to teach you about today: How to give yourself an excellent and simple manicure and pedicure.

1. First of all, take off any nail polish left on your fingers or toes from before. Don’t peel the nail polish off as this can remove the top layer of your nail.

2. Fill a little cubbie or container of some kind with hot water and add some bath salts to the water. Soak your hands and  feet and use the bath salts as a great exfoliator, especially on your feet. After you soak them, work on your feet first. File the callouses off with a foot file and never ever use one of those items that grates the dead skin off your foot. That tool is dangerous and you can easily cut yourself and get an infection in the cut on your foot. Don’t do this especially if you are at nail salon as this tool may not have been cleaned well.

3. Take some cuticle oil or any kind of oil you have sitting around ( argan, cocoanut oil etc.) and being careful how much you put on, place a small amount of oil on each of your cuticles and push your cuticle back with an orange stick (a little stick that with a diagonal cut at the end).Take a cuticle trimmer or even a small nail clippers and snip away all the dead skin by your nails.

4.Run some nail polish remover over your nails to get rid of the oil and file your nails into a square or oval shape.

http://www.1000thingstodo.comfinger nails in an oval or square shape.

5.Begin with your bottom coat of nail polish. The ideal method is to paint your nails in 3 strokes but this does not always work. And a tip here, if you don’t want to get a base coat wherever you buy nail polish, use your top coat as a base coat and top coat. There are many different types of nail polish and a product that has more pigment is much preferred because you only have to do two coats of colour not three or four. The nail polish brands I like the best are: OPI, Sparitual, and QUO by Orly at Shoppers Drug Mart. A good place to get your nail polish online is http://www.nailpolishcanada.com or Sephora, which also stock other brands such as Butter London,  Formula X, and Zoya.

6. Once your first nail polish coat is dry, put on your first coat of colour. Let that coat dry really well before putting on your second coat of coloured nail polish.

www.popsugar.com

7. Once your two coats of colour are nearly dry, paint on the top coat and let your nails dry. A couple of hours should be good enough but if your nails are still sticky or tacky let them dry for longer. Top coats are clear and bottom coats can be clear or coloured white. I prefer a clear base coat because it takes less nail polish coats to cover. Using a white base coat may mean you need an extra coat of colour and more drying time.

8. To help your nails dry you may spray them with a product that helps your nail polish dry faster. Check out Sephora or your local Nail Salon for this useful spray or oil. Clean up any nail polish around your nails with a Q-tip soaked in nail polish remover.

9. To keep the polish on your fingernails a half of week longer, put on another coat of top coat to stop your nails from starting to chip. This is especially important in ensuring that your manicure remains looking sleek and professional.

10. Enjoy your nails. Toes usually last longer than fingers so you should be able to get about three weeks out of your pedicure and you can also put more top coat on if your toe nails begin to chip. Usually, your fingernails should keep polished for a week to a week and a half.

11. Clean all your tools in soapy warm water to disinfect them every few times you do your nails.

There are so many details you can add to your nails once you have painted them your desired color. You can add details such as rhinestones to them before you do your top coat, You can also try painting them with nail polish pens for nail art and designs. One can also use tape to create geometric lines and paint your nail partially another color over your chosen color of nail polish. You can also paint over your nails with a clear coat of glitter or sparkles in gold or silver. This is especially great for the holiday season. Finally, one can not forget doing a classic french nail using little strips you can buy at the drugstore to keep the top of your nails white and in the perfect shape. However, you choose to paint your nails have a fantastic time because doing your nails is supposed to be fun, not a chore.
