Causebox Fall 2018: Intro Box #Causebox #sociallyconscious

I was super excited to receive this in the mail a couple of weeks back. Not only for the great items, but also for the charities and causes Causebox Supports. I loved that I could see the items I would receive, even if they had different styles or color choices I couldn’t choose as a new member. You can sign up as a yearly member too have this option.

Check out Causebox.com today as they have a great Cyber Monday special on, in the above link. The items in this particular box I loved, as they form parts of many Christmas presents!! The entire box is worth over $250, but since it is a membership, can be bought seasonally from $55 to $60 US. I had a coupon for my first box for $10 OFF.

Causebox searches the world for the best “socially conscious products.” They deliver these products seasonally to customers in a “beautifully designed” box. Each Causebox “highlights companies and products,” which put “people before profit,” and help make the world an improved place.

Artist Designed Postcard, Top Right.

From the October Causebox, this vegan-leather clutch was available in black or tan/cream & handcrafted by artisans in Jaipur, India. It’s magnetically fastens and has thoughtfully designed features such as roomy, open pockets, zippered storage, and a card sleeve. Jaipur unites chic, modern designs with timeless craftsmanship that empowers artisan communities located in central India. I love this for nights out, & the tan/cream vegan leather goes with any outfit. (Worth $54).

I knew right away, this scarf was the perfect present for my Godmom, Aunt J. It was also created in India, and loomed by artisans there. It’s the perfect staple scarf for fall/winter/spring and Causebox partnered with Bloom & Give, to sponsor tuition for 50 girls to attend the Dashak Camp in Rajasthan, India. They receive education and empowerment here, which has changed the course of their lives. (Worth $60).

These Soko Bow Earrings are gorgeous and timeless. They can be dressed up or down, and are handmade by artisans in Kenya. These artisans have been empowered with technological tools, which permit them to sustainably support themselves, learn, and develop as entrepreneurs. These are part of a present for a good friend. (Worth $42).

This beautiful eyeshadow pallet and brush — I kept. I adored the colors and the quality of the eyeshadow pigment. The brush is well-made and perfect for your crease of your eye or the corners. These nine eyeshadow colors are from the brand RealHer and are cruelty free. They are named with strong, empowering words for women/men to be their “own kind of beauty.” RealHer also donates a portion of their proceeds to charities that promote inclusion. (Worth $38.00)

I love Zoya nail polish, it’s such a great brand. The polish colors last a long time. I did not get the colors I wanted with these, but I know the right person will come along for this gift. Zoya is one of the first brands to come out with clean, long lasting nail polish. They are made in the US, but are without formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, camphor, and six other toxic chemicals, commonly found in conventional nail polish. (Worth $20)

Scentuals Grape Fruit and Turmeric Hand Repair Cream is made with 100 percent natural ingredients. It’s a rich and quick-absorbing hand cream that nourishes skin with Shea butter and Cocoa butter. It’s also enriched with Organic Argan, Sweet Almond oil, and Aloe. Besides being all organic in its product formulations, Scentuals also donates a percentage of their sales to the Canadian Cancer Society. (Worth $7.89)

PF Candle Co. began in a garage, and has become the “go to choice” for some of the trendiest boutiques across America. Their candles are hand-poured in L.A. with a love for “apothecary inspired amber jars.” Each of their candles is made with 100 percent soy wax and has phthalate-Free premium fragrance oils inside ( Worth $18).

One of the most popular and environmentally-friendly water bottle brands out there, S’Well water bottles replace plastic disposable water bottles, with ThermaSwell Technology that keeps drinks cold for 24-hours and hot for 12-hours. This bottle was 17 Oz, S’well also has a 9 Oz. Size and 24 Oz.

The latter, can fit a bottle of wine and keep it chilled. I have one of these from before, it washes well, and comes in a plethora of designs and finishes. I was excited to have this as a free add-on to the box, as in Canada the the 17 Oz. Bottles are worth $45 or more, depending on the design. What’s best about them, is that they’re durable, light, easily washed, and have the perfect top to drink from. I use them at home, on the go, in bed, etc. They never spill or break from dropping them. They prevent oceans full of plastic water bottles that don’t break down, and are made from recycled material (Worth $45).

Beauty: Ipsy Bag July 2018 #Ipsy @saythelees #beauty #makeup

Here’s July’s Ipsy Cosmetic bag. Each month I receive a cute case and five items to try that are makeup, skincare, or related. If you’re interested in signing up for Ipsy, you can do that here: Ipsy Bag.

A mermaid or water-like theme for July’s Ipsy makeup bag. I liked this one a lot. It has a pretty sheen.

July’s little description card, focused on Summer of course!

OFRA Cosmetic Laboratories: Eyeshadow in Shimmery Charcoal — I like it, but it’s a bit dark to wear most days. Even at night, I’m not a huge fan of dark-grey, I prefer dark-brown or dark-purple in my crease, if I wear it.

SUGAR Cosmetics: Stroke Of Genius Heavy-Duty Kohl in Green Light 03 — I loved this, surprisingly. I’m not much for Green, but this is beautiful as an eyeliner when you want to do a nude eye, and not much else. It’s creamy and buttery, and stays-put well. The green shade is nice, like a sea green, not a moss. A great item that matches all eye colors well.

Mellow Lipstick: In Candy Floss (Matte Lipstick) — Great shade, almost a neon pink and bright for summer. For me, a bit too neon, but I have friend who has a similar complexion and loves this bright pink color.

Free Hugs B’LIVINN Nail Polish: Color – Awesome — This neon pink polish matches the lipstick, but the lipstick is matte, while the nail polish is shiny. I’m going to put this with the lipstick, for my friend. The brand is great, I’ve used it before and the color goes on smooth and bright.

Comptoir Sud Pacifique Paris: Vanilla BlackBerry Eau De Toilette (Natural Spray) — This scent is wonderful. It smells so good, and I love it. It’s a product, I’d purchase. The combination of a sweet blackberry note, with the vanilla smells refreshing and light; the vanilla isn’t overpowering. Love this Natural Spray, it’s excellent.

Ipsy Bag: June 2018 #Ipsy #beauty #Ipsysocialbutterfly #Ipsybag #makeup #skincare

Here’s what I received in this month’s Ipsy Bag. To join the beauty subscription you can sign up at Ipsy.

June’s Cute Case in Support of Pride Month.

This month’s little subscription card.

PD Cosmeceuticals Infused Nail Lacquer (Polish) – The nail polish is nice, but not my color.

Feel PURE Anywhere Balm – Rose: This stuff is amazing! I loved it for chapped or cracked lips, especially at the corners. I’ve never had such issues with chapped lips in summer and usually find that Aragon Oil will heal the cracks at the corner of my mouth in a night. But it hasn’t been working, so this Balm has been working great as a kind of salve for my lips and mouth area in dry weather. Nice flavor too!

FINDING FERDINAND Nude/Pink Lipstick: Moisturizing and also the perfect nude/pink. I’m happy with this little lipstick choice this month 🙂

Kenzie Fragrance: I’m not sure what this perfume or fragrance is called. It doesn’t smell bad or good. It’s kind of a ‘meh’ scent. Maybe it’s a natural perfume, but I think the scent itself could be better.

MAC Prep & Prime – Skin Base Visage – MY FAVORITE! This stuff is amazing 🙂 It’s a primer and gel moisturizer in one. It’s so light and wonderful under makeup everyday to keep your makeup on through the day and also in the heat. This one I am going to purchase. It’s about $38.00 CAN on the MAC website.

Beauty: Luxebox – Spring 2018 Reveal #beauty #beautybox #Luxebox

So, a couple of days ago I received my Spring Luxebox. I haven’t been overly pleased with them. When you receive four a year, it’s important that each one is full of stuff you can use, yourself. I’ve had too many products that don’t suit my skin-tone. Also, products a few products that were repeats.

This never used to be the case with Luxebox, so I’ve cancelled. I’m going to try Ipsy bag for a while, starting in April. Also, from the research I did, it’s rated better than many other monthly or seasonal boxes.

Anyways, here’s what I received for Luxebox Spring 2018:

Tadaa!!

1. China Glaze Nail Lacquer with Hardeners – Worth $14.00/14 mL – Color is Orangy-Brown with Shimmer — I gave this to my Mom, it suits her Autumn skin-tone well.

2. LARITZY Cosmetics Eye Pencil (Laritzy.com) – Worth $18.00/1g (pencil) – White Shimmer — It’s a hard pencil, but a pretty color for tight lining on your bottom lid, and the corner of your eye, if you can soften it enough. So far, not much luck.

3. The Beauty Crop: GRLPWR Liquid Lipstick (@thebeautycrop) — Worth $10.00/14 mL – Deep Burgundy Red — This color was also quite brown. The photo is misleading. I gave it to a girl my Mom works with; it suits her skin-tone much better.

4. MANNAKADAR Beauty: Lash Extending Primer – $24.00/8g – White like most lash primers.

I’ve never found one I like, but I will give this a try as the formula includes proteins to strengthen hair follicles and moisturize your lashes. Sounds good to me 🙂

5. Voesh New York: Pedicure in a Box — Green Tea Pedicure – 3 pouches in a box — I’ve never tried this, but I’m excited too. One great item at least!

6. Professional Sebastian Shaper Plus Extra Hold Hairspray — 1.5 oz for Travel size.

The full-size is about $20.00 CAN at the Drugstore. I’ve tried it before and I like it a lot. The price is right, a full-sized spray bottle lasts a long time, and it’s hairspray you can brush out at night or if you’ve over sprayed. Two good items 🙂

7. Delectable Ultra Nourishing Hand Cream: Sweet Mint Cream — With Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Ana Aloe Vera – $6.00/6 mL

Again, not a bad item unless coconut isn’t your favorite scent. I’m not a huge fan. Nevertheless, hand cream is useful, and a great gift, as this is a full-sized product. It works fantastic too. My complaint is that I’ve received this almost exact same product in four different boxes.

But all in all, a good Luxebox for Spring 2018!

The Complexities of Red #thoughts #amwriting #nonfiction

Credit: Giovanni Licea – YouTube

I considered the colour red. How I’m equally attracted and repelled by it. How I pass by a red v-neck sweater in the right shade, but mix my acrylic colours, blend them until my instincts say stop; stop sign red. No wait . . . a bright cool startling red appears on my canvas. I think this is passion and passion is the boldest red. I think of how I not only crave to paint in vivid red, but in many vivid colours and textures. How I trace the feeling of layered paints with my fingers, and hunger for other colours with my eyes – blue, green, and purple. Though I adore all these colours, my favourite paintings are all in red.
As with my love for sexy heels, which I adore in red too. If red is passion, what more can I say about women and sensuality then red shoes. They’re expression and fierceness. Like Kelly Picklers song “Red High Heels” — “I’m about to show you just how missing me feels, in my red high heels . . .” Red for revenge, red for moving on, red for love. But I hate red for love, it’s memory is sickening. He looked good in that colour – almost the best.

Credit: Sam Roloff – “The Big Red One”
Yet red is so many things more. It’s anger, hate, rage, hurt, demons dreaming — the beast inside who does not die. Red is sinful, delicious, and deadly. It’s sex and power; a primilness. It’s royalty and blood, red blood spilled for in the body it’s blue (hence bluebloods). I love how classic red is — nothing more classic then a cat eye and red Bridget Bardot lips. Nothing as classic as red Mustang.

I don’t wear red, the colour outshines me and doesn’t fit with such pale skin and blond hair. Please no red dress – I’d rather blend in and be a classic black or navy dress cut perfectly. But I seek out bits of red and cling to them, not wanting red to blind me. Only some sparkle and razzle dazzle to hold in my hand. Red nail polish is beautiful, with a bit of bling  Red as some of the lights in Las Vegas and red fireworks; red stoplights.

Red is perplexing because it’s complex, not simple at all. Red is nationalism and red is internationalism. It’s a proud Canadian colour and I don’t mind wearing it on our Nation’s Birthday. Or cheering on our Canadian hockey teams in the Olympics and junior hockey.

As well, roses are so divine, so deadly pricking your finger. Red, passion and pain. Together swirled these colours of red, of love, and hate collide. There are many shades of grey, but even more shades of red. It’s more than a primary colour it calls as a siren, “Look see me.” No one hides in red. Red cars are often caught barely speeding and Red is a theme of many songs albums as in “Red” as T. swifts song and album and the Beatles album “Redone.” Red as “My love is like a red red rose.” Some choral song I cannot recall.

Credit: Jeannette Mattson – “Red Rose” – Fine Art America

But I’m sitting here, music blaring trying to decide what to paint. I’ve that special shade of red and it’s mixing and melding with other colours. Shades and tones. I see, red on my canvas and it bleeds. Red blood, blood . . .life, the most prolific association. Red is blood. Blood is life. Red such as poppies, that we must always remember. Red for anger, red for hate, for war. Red to hurt, poor the droplets down a crystal glass. Red red wine. To drink away the blood and crippling thoughts. Red to forget. I like a Malbec with bite. A Zinfandel to make me chatty. A Merlot or Cav-Sav with some friends. Red sangria is delicious. Red strawberry margaritas because there’s real fire in tequila. Red is too many things, too symbolic, too self-contradictory. Red is life.

Story Continuation Prompt: Fiction – “Renewing My License”

Thank you to Wandering Soul who host this challenge each week. You can complete the prompt sentences and add two sentences of your own or use the sentence to write your own story based on the sentence. This week’s prompt sentence is: ” The harried woman looked at me, aggravatedly. I couldn’t care less.”

——-

The harried woman looked at me, aggravatedly. I couldn’t care less. I only needed to pay for my new driver’s license and have a new picture of myself taken.

The woman named Jill pretended not to see me. I knew from the length of the line-up she had been busy all day. I felt bad for Jill  but at the same time, I had been standing in line one hour and there were four other ladies working at counters serving people politely and in a timely manner.

Why was the line I was in moving so slowly? The other women at their booths were cheery, as if they were attempting to do the best job they could, despite the constant flow of people.

But Jill sat in front of me and wouldn’t even look at me when I cleared my throat. She took her time drinking a soft drink until it was half-empty and pulled out a bag of ketchup chips from her desk drawer. Jill ate the chips slowly, licking her fingertips afterwards.

She didn’t bother to wipe off her hands or use hand sanitizer. Jill peered up at me finally giving me be a grumpy stare and said: “What would you like Ma’am?” My eyes went wide as she emphasized the title ‘Ma’am.’ She was using the title on purpose, to be insulting.

I smiled at her trying to be genuine.”My those chips looked tasty. It must be difficult to take a break when there are long line-ups. I like your nail polish, what colour is that, Jade?”

Jill looked at me distrustingly. “How can I help you?” She asked snidely. I sighed.

“Listen Jill,  I have been waiting for help from you for an hour and a half and all I need to do is renew my driver’s license and take a new picture for the license.” I handed her my old driver’s license and I paid for a new license. Jill was fast with her computer skills to my surprise.

“Picture is fine, it doesn’t need retaking,” Jill said, trying to speed up the process of moving me through the line.

“I would like a new picture. I’ve lost twenty-pounds since my old picture.” I told Jill and she giggled.

“Still a ways to go?” I was taken a back. Especially after I regarded Jill’s plump form which was fuelled by junk food, as far I was concerned.

“Actually my weight is great, right on par for my height. Thank you for asking, let’s get that picture taken, shall we?”

Jill rolled her eyes and directed me where to sit and quickly snapped a picture. I glanced at the photo on her computer screen, “No, that’s a bad photo. Please take one more. Take pictures until you get one where I look decent.” Jill only took one more picture.

“We’re going to use this one,” she said trying to sound authoritive. It was better then the first one at least. I glanced at Jill again. What in the world was going on in her life that she was acting so miserable and rude?

I heard her take the next customer as I walked away. She drank the remainder of her soft drink before helping an elderly man. She told him to hurry up and that she didn’t have time to explain everything too him. I was going to go back and defend the man, but he seemed to be doing fine, pounding his fist on Jill’s desk and asking to see Jill’s manager.

What turns a person into a woman who behaves such as Jill? I wondered.

Help Me My Fingernails are Destroyed: What to Do When You’ve Ruined Your Finger Nails from too Much Gel or Shellac Nail treatments.

Below is a picture of my nails in their current awful condition. I have had gel nail polish three times in the last three months and the gel polish and process of removing the polish has ruined my nails. It is going to take along time for them to recover. I did some research on the best way I can bring my nails back to life so hopefully you can learn from my mistake. I know some lady’s get their nails done monthly with shellac or gel polish but the effects are brutal on your real nails and I had beautiful nails before gel polish. I would save gel or shellac polish for a special occasion.

My Nails Destroyed (Amanda Eifert)

—–
1. If you do not want to pay $20.00 for a beauty salon to remove your gel shellac polish you can use acetone and either soak your nails in the acetone or soak cotton balls/rounds with the acetone and place them over your nails putting tinfoil over top the cotton balls/rounds. After twenty to thirty minutes, the shellac or gel polish should be easy for you to scrap off gently. It should come right off and be sticky. For me this method works for shellac but not gel nails. I soaked my Gel nails for fifty minutes altogether with the cotton balls and foils and the polish did not come off last time I had my nails done in December.

——-

Acetone Gel/Shellac Nail Polish Remover (www.nailpolishcanada.com)

——-
2. For Gel nails, the second option I researched and that was  recommended to me by an esthetician, was to buff the nail polish off using a nail file. This takes along time and can be extremely hard on your nails especially if they are already super thin and cracking due to Gel polish. It also hurts your finger nails and I was trying to be gentle. If your nails are thin and peeling this method is not the way to go. I was able to remove most of the Gel polish, but underneath my nails were paper thin. In some places, they started to bleed underneath the nail. I left the Gel polish right at my tips because it was too painful to buff off and will grow out soon.

***If your nails are as bad as mine, it is worth it to go into the salon and get the Gel polish removed. They salon has a special drill/file and it does not remove extra layers of your nail that are already thin, as filing the polish off can make happen. If I had only went to the salon in the first place and paid $20.00 I would’ve had nails in a better condition. I paid $20.00 anyways for the nail strengthener I talk about later on. So consider this please.

——-

3. If your nails are thin, cracked, and peeling cut them as short as you can, so they can grow back stronger. Use a cream that is good for your hands and nails to moisturuze and help strengthen your nails and keep your hands soft. I recommend Vaseline Healthy Hand and Nail cream which you can find at any drugstore.

Vaseline. Healthy Hand and Nail Cream (Amanda Eifert)

—–

4. Use cuticle oil to shine your nails when you have gel or shellac nails. This also helps to moisturuze your nails so they do not become cracked and peeling. Use it after you have removed your gel/shellac polish to keep your nails especially strong and your cuticles soft. I received this in a gift a few years ago but cuticle oil is available in drug stores and olive oil works well if it is all you have at home.

——

5. This next product, I read about from other people who found themselves in this nail situation. It is a Nail Strengthener by OPI, an excellent nail care brand. I ordered one from Nail Polish Canada. There were a few different OPI Nail Strengtheners to choose from and I bought the one for dry and brittle nails. The nail strengthener is from OPI’s Nail Envy line and costs about $20.00 Canadian for a bottle. The blogs I read, said to apply the strengthener to your nails at the beginning of the week. You can put a colour over it if you would like. Also, use it over top your coloured polish if you are applying a colour. Then mid-week, apply a coat of the nail strengthener again and also apply one last coat at the end of the week. Then start again the next week until your nails are strong. If you don’t want to invest in a strengthening polish at least put some kind of regular nail polish overtop as your nails grow more and will hold together better under a polish. Clear polish is fine and probably the best. But this Nail Envy works so well, it is worth ever penny.

OPI. Nail Envy , Nail Strengthener (www.nailpolishcanada.com)

——-

6. If you need to remove nail polish, do not use regular or acetone nail polish remover on your nails in their damaged state. Instead, use a natural nail polish remover. I received a great one in my Luxebox a couple boxes ago. It is called Sun Coat: All Natural Nail Polish Remover Gel made from Corn and Soy. It is $7.99 online or can be found at London Drugs with other Sun Coat products. You apply the gel to your nail (with regular polish on) and allow it sit for thirty seconds to a minute on your nails. You may have to reapply a bit if you missed an edge or a section of polish. But generally, within a minute your polish comes right off with a cotton round and your nails aren’t further ruined by chemicals or damaged more. Sun Coat’s Nail Polish Remover does not sting when you put it on or smell at all. It is the perfect polish remover to use and start again with applying the nail polish OPI strengthener to keep your nails from looking like mine currently do.

If I can say one thing that is important it would be that if you are doing Gel or Shellac nails often, allow them to breathe for a couple weeks now and then. Also, pay the money and get the estheticisan to remove it with her special tool. It will save your nails. Inbetween, use the the OPI Nail strengthener on your nails.
