Fiction: Come Back Be Here

“So this is it?”

“Yeah, I guess. This is it.” Carter murmured. He was holding Melanie’s hands in his and couldn’t seem to let go of them.

“I can’t believe it,” she said.”We’ve traveled all over the world together since Amsterdam. Now I’m probably never going to see you again.” Tears slipped down Melanie’s soft white cheeks.

She had promised herself she wouldn’t cry.

“I’ll visit.” Carter promised.”I’m sure I’ll end up in Montreal sometime in the future.”

“But that’s just it Carter. You can’t promise that.” Melanie said wiping her cheeks. “You travel the world for your job. You take wild and fantastic pictures for National Geographic.”

“I’m an accountant trying to finish her CA. I want to start my own business and I want to stay in Montreal. I grew-up there and my parents and other family live there. I can’t imagine leaving them for longer than I already have, travelling the last two-years.”

“I could settle in Montreal someday . . .” Carter mused.

“Don’t say that.”

“Say what?”

“Make promises you can’t keep. You grew up in Tuscany, in Italy. Your family maybe American but you  live on this beautiful land where you make wine, as your ancestors did for generations.” Melanie said.

“Your home in Tuscany, it’s your anchor and it’s where you love to go when you’re off.” Melanie said squeezing Carter’s hands tighter.

“You’re not Canadian. It’s beautiful but I know for you, it’s not home.”

“Perhaps, you’re my new home?” Carter said gazing in Melanie’s sad green eyes.

“Don’t lie to my like that, Carter.” She chastised, “If you say something like that you have to mean it. If we were to maintain our relationship, you’ d have to see me more than every once in a while. Can you do that with your work and family?”

Carter was frustrated and unhappy. “No I can’t. I can’t make promises to you right now. There’s too much of the world I wan’t to see still. I can’t see myself settling down for years and if I did . . .No not in your beautiful Canada.” A tear escaped Carter’s milk-chocolate eyes; he was embarrassed.

Melanie was outright crying now.

Carter took her in his arms and held her. After a while her cries turned to sniffles. She turned her face up to him and he kissed her for what he knew would be the last time. He drew the kiss out, knowing he would need to remember it for a lifetime.

“You have to go soon. You have to get through customs before your flight leaves.” Melanie remarked he voice hoarse.

“I know,” Carter said depressed.”This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done Mel.If it’s meant to work out, maybe one day it will?”

Melanie smiled. “No more promises you can’t keep. I’ll miss you Carter, so much.”

She had such strength; Carter always admired Melanie’s strength of character.

He stared back at his beautiful Mel as she waved to him and he walked away. Her auburn hair was braided and her beautiful green eyes full of unshed tears.

Carter somehow knew, he’d never see Mel again. They might chat over Facebook or he might see her pictures on Instagram. But he doubted in person, they’d ever meet.

He’d never forget his last image of her, attempting to smile while hiding her sadness. Carter waved to Mel and tried to look forward to his next photo shoot in Copenhagen.

Poem: Wrapped Refrain – “Vacation At Home”

Thanks to The Daily Post for the word prompt price.

——

http://www.howstuffworks.com

——

Buying groceries we often sigh,

Over price paid for our food –cry

Economy not in the right place yet,

Paid eight bucks, cauliflower? Regret.

Have to eat, we purchase food that is good for us,

Fruits, veggies, crisp and delicious, at a high price plus —

—–

The dollar is low, the US dollar,

Is overvalued, we holler.

But can’t do much, but vacation,

In Canada, our home, elation,

Rocky Mountains, hiking trails, walking,

On a sandy beach, into water, both talking,

—–

Family or friends with us, happiness,

Summer is on it’s way, sunniness,

Thinking about Montreal,

French culture, Quebec City feel,

Home is the best place to take a vacation in,

Golfing in BC, music festivities, diving in,

——

The price we pay to visit the states,

Stretches budgets here, so wait,

We won’t be visiting Vegas,

Engrossed in what, Canada has,

Hundreds of years-old culture, freedom, pristine,

Unique, brilliant, festivity; home, nature gleams.

——

Not ashamed, not to pay the price,

Worlds experienced at lower price,

I’ve sunsets to wander at, to love,

I’ve people to see whom I also love,

The world in our own back yard awaits, our history,

Buying groceries, shopping, the unknown; much mystery.

Part 4: Never Again – New Love for Jolene.

Please read Part 3 of ‘Never Again’ here.

Part 4: Never Again – New Love for Jolene.

“Sorry do I know you?” A handsome man around her age asked Jolene.” You seem familiar. And well, you’re beautiful, who could forget you.” Jolene indulged the man with a smile. She was anxious to return to Kasia and Aunt Cathy. No doubt Auntie Cathy had spilled all of Jolene’s carefully guarded secrets to Kasia.

“I don’t believe we’ve met before,” Jolene told the man. “I’m only visiting Cathy Lumiere, with my daughter. I’m Cathy’s niece. I used to live with Cathy when I was in highschool.”

” High school that’s it,” the man mused smiling. He had beautiful lips Jolene thought and such long dark lashes covered his chocolate eyes. “You were the head cheerleader and Prom Queen, you dated Scott Jeune. I never liked that guy. He was obnoxious and a narsaccist if you ask me.” Jolene looked at the man thinking he didn’t realize how true his opinion of Scott was.

” What’s your name, Monsieur?” Jolene asked the man.

“I’m Luc Devreaux, Jolene. I own Chateau Blanc.” Jolene’s eyes went huge when she learned Luc owned the Chateau. She studied his face, staring. Jolene tried to remember if she’d ever seen a Luke Devreaux at the Chateau.

Luc cleared his throat and Jolene realized he’d been holding out his hand for her to shake. Instead of shaking her hand though, he went in for a kiss on each of Jolene’s cheeks. Jolene blushed. Luc smelt delicious, spicy, and citrus.

“How French of you,” Jolene said and Luke gave her a charming grin.

“You have been gone so long you have forgotten about your French roots?” Luc asked Jolene and she hesitated at Luc’s question.

“Well, I travel a lot for work. I wasn’t from Nice or even France originally. I was born in Montreal, Canada. And except for business I have lived in Ottawa with my daughter for five years now… I’m trying to picture you Luc as you looked when I was in highschool, but I can’t remember you. I’m sorry, I was a wild girl at sixteen and seventeen -years-old. I went out with many boys until I met Scott. Lucky, the thing with Scott was only temporary.” Jolene felt she was rambling but Luc made her nervous in a wonderful way. He made her feel as if it were fine for her to be herself.

“Well we went out a few weeks,” Luc began, “but I wasn’t living at the Chateau then. I inherited it from my father later. Mon pere and ma mere have been divorced since I was twelve and I lived with my Mother, who had custody until I was eighteen. But I visited my Dad here in the summer. I remember you well from when you went to high school. You were amazingly pretty, full of yourself, but what pretty teenage girl isn’t. I wanted to keep seeing you, but Scott asked you out. Even though, I was a few years older than you, all you cared about was Scott.” Luc said sadly.

Jolene thought hard. Slowly, a few threads of memories came together in her mind. She remembered a  handsome guy, older than herself, who resembled Luc. She had met young Luc on the path to Chateau from the beach where she had been sun tanning. Luc had been good-looking in a classically handsome way, lanky and athletic. He wasn’t charismatic as Scott had been. But Luc as a young man was an unwavering presence. He was thoughtful and concerned about what she had liked and wanted to do. He had manners and everything wasn’t about himself. In addition, as he said, Luc had been older than Jolene. She had been attracted to the fact he was a university guy back when she was seventeen-years-old.

” I remember you Luc,” Jolene said happily. “You were visiting your father and we met on the pathway. It was dark and thundering and the waves were splashing high on the path. They waves were making it hard for me to stay standing on the pathway as I ran to the Chateau. You came and helped me across and we had hot chocolate together. We dated three-weeks, you were caring and concerned. I thought you were a real catch — until Scott. I was obsessed with Scott for far to long. I’m sorry if I hurt you, dumping you for Scott. You were the better guy.” Luc laughed and grasped Jolene’s hand between both of his larger hands.

“I’m glad you remember, finally,” Luc murmured. “I heard from some of the other staff that Cathy’s niece was going to be staying here awhile. I’m glad you are. I seem to remember we had quite a bit of fun in my old apartment when you were in senior year.”

Jolene lifted her eyebrows, “I believe we did.” Luc laughed.

“When you have time between visiting with your Aunt, come see me in my office. We can catch up… I never heard you had a daughter.” Luc added.

Jolene grinned her hands still enclosed in Luc’s warm hands, ” Yeah, she is great, fifteen now. I will come see you in a few days. I’m a bit run down from travelling and I have a lot of explaining to do with Aunt Cathy. . . when I left years ago it was quite sudden and we haven’t seen Aunt Cathy since.” Jolene admitted to Luc, unsure why she felt like being so honest with him.

” I’m not used to this again Luc. I haven’t dated or really done anything since my daughter was born. There’s been a few random dates but nothing concrete. It’s hard to trust someone for me Luc. Especially, after Scott . . .” Luc nodded brushing a stray hair out of Jolene’s face.

“It’s okay Jolene. We’ll just enjoy each other’s company while your here and see where things go. There is no pressure to do anything you are not comfortable doing.” Luc assured Jolene holding both her hands again.

Jolene looked into Luc’s eyes which seemed to pull her in and hold her close, like she wanted his arms to do now. She realized she had an affect on him as he tightened his hands around her hands and Luc’s breathing quickened.

” I work, I model a little and I run a chain of clothing stores for woman. I am with Kasia, my daughter as much as possible. I wasn’t always able to be with her when she was a bit younger as much.” Jolene said feeling herself flushing again under Luc’s stare.

“What a lucky girl to have a mother with such beauty and intelligence. I’m sure she inherited those qualities from you. I would like to take Kasia’s pretty mother to dinner, after she comes to visit me in my office. Oui?” Luc said. His voice sounded sexy to Jolene.

Oui, Luc,” Jolene said quietly. ” Kasia will be surprised. She has gone on more dates than her mother has in many years.” Luc smiled at Jolene squeezing her hands in his still. Luc let Jolene’s hands go slowly, trailing his fingers along hers as he let his own hands drop and hers.

Jolene walked away from Luc back to her Aunt Cathy’s sitting room, willing herself not to catch her black boot heel on a carpet edge. She looked back once to see Luc standing where she left him in a hallway, watching Jolene walk away. She gave him a small smile and Luc waved.

Part 5 is coming soon, today even!

You Don’t Need One So Big!

Prompt: Tell us about a time when you had to choose between two options, and you picked the unpopular choice.

——-

http://www.overstock.com

I can think of a time I made the wrong choice, and it wasn’t so popular a choice with my brother. Nath, and I were going on a spring trip to Montreal. I was excited because Montreal is one of my favourite cities I have been to and it had been about seven or eight years since I had visited.

We booked our flights through Airmiles on Westjet and booked an apartment through AirBnB right downtown so we would be close to the metro which travels all around Montreal.

The week before I was staring at the suitcases down in the pantry. The large black ones were way oversized but my little blue one seemed too small. I decided to go downtown to shop for a good sized piece of luggage. I found a purple suitcase at Winners. I thought it would be big enough but not too big for Montreal and the color ensured I’d be able to claim it easily when the baggage came out at the airport.

I packed all my stuff. Too much for a six day trip. I was happy because I would still have enough room for shopping items. Unfortunately, I forgot Montreal is located on a hill and also I forgot we were taking the bus from our airport to a few blocks away from the apartment. Climbing those six blocks to the apartment building was hell as I dragged my heavy suit case up the hill. Finally, my brother Nath took pity on me and traded me with his little suitcase.

I didn’t need that big of suitcase in Montreal even when I shopped. My blue one would have been fine. Hulling the large purple suitcase to and from the airport on a hill was excruciating. And there was no way I needed to pack that much. All of this was much to the amusement of my brother who told me I wouldn’t need such a big suitcase, to begin with.

Now, unless I’m going somewhere ten days or two weeks,  I bring my little blue suitcase and store a duffle bag for anything extra I might buy on the way home. You never know how long or where, you might have to hull your large suitcase.

Photography 101 – Day 12 – The Architecture of Montreal

Here are some more pictures of Montreal, Canada. Some of the pictures are modern but most are of old Montreal in buildings that could be hundreds of years old. Because the Metro or train is so well developed it is easy to arrive and leave anywhere very quickly with the purchase of a metro card that scans just like that, beats the ticket system we have in Edmonton. The Metro also allows one too see everything you could want to see and not have to drive.

Photography 101 – Day 7 – A View of Old Montreal

There are few places in the world like Montreal in Canada. The mix of the old world European architecture with the modern buildings of more modern times. I had the time of my life in Montreal between the food, restaurants, old Montreal, the St. Lawrence River, shopping down St. Catherine’s Street, and Musee des Beaux Arts. There is so much to see and do in Montreal. The best part of Montreal is immersing yourself in french Canadian culture whatever you do. They do not speak true Parisian french there but it is interesting to hear the mix of English and French while one is taking the Metro. Here are two of the fantastic landmarks my brother and I took in there:

Photography 101 – Day 4 – Scrumptious Blissday

Bliss can mean so many things. I couldn’t pick one actual meaning of Bliss so I chose 2. The first meaning of Bliss is the feeling you get when you are eating delicious food. Two springs ago I went to Montreal with my brother and every day we went to one fancy delicious restaurant for 6 days. At this one restaurant I had this wonderful chicken and goat cheese salad.  There are few things in this world that are better than goat cheese and since I limit my dairy, I don’t get to eat cheese very often. Goat cheese is just wonderful and gooey as it melts in your mouth the softest of foods that makes any salad divine. My brother rolled his eyes at me as I ordered goat cheese dishes from different restaurants almost every single time. It must be a big thing in Montreal, Quebec.

My second, third, and fourth pictures are blurred but it’s the idea I want you to get more than just the pictures alone. These are my pictures of doggy bliss. My dog was going to eat. Her name was Nikki and she and I were 2 of a kind. In these pictures she is cuddling  as she goes to eat and you get this progression of feelings of bliss as she goes from being petted to eating.
