Hello again. I’m here with some more fashion picks this time with sweaters, cardigans, and shirts for fall. Some of them are simple basics, while others are more colourful or have an interesting design.
Please enjoy! Thank you!

1. Gapcanada.com – Softspun cold-shoulder Tee (White) – $39.95 CAN
It was years ago that I found this litograph of Emma made from the words of the Jane Austen novel. Moreover, Jane Austen is arguably one of most loved Victorian authors. Additionally, Emma’s litograph poster was most appealing to me due to its colors. The poster I chose was in baby blue and light-gray and is a focal point on the picture wall of my bedroom.
When I thought about how I would design this picture wall, I knew I wanted the artwork to be authentic and not the average prints you find in many design stores: hence, I chose the lithograph poster and prints of artwork mainly from Etsy.com. On Etsy, the artists are not mainstream. As well, I used smaller prints, mostly 8.5″ x 11″ to go around the large Emma litograph to achieve balance in my design.
Furthermore, when I chose my Emma poster, I was able to choose the colors I wanted my lithograph to be from several options. There are a larger variety of color combinations available online for this specific style of Emma poster. As well, you can buy this litograph poster matted in the 12″ x 16″ size.
When I purchased the litograph years ago, matting was not an option. I decided to go with the poster that was the largest size, 42″ x 63″ because I was using the poster as my picture wall focal point. Also, only the largest size contains the full text of Emma on the litograph including all “157, 422 words” from the novel.
The litographs website has a variety of t-shirts, posters, totes, and scarves of your most beloved literary works. There are a plethora of options for posters for example. You can also choose literary items that aren’t litographs but are based off your favorite literary works.
To frame my poster I went to the craft store Michaels and bought the largest silver poster frame I could find. I use silver in my bedroom as it goes well with my light blue walls. I brought the poster with me to ensure it fit the frame. I loved the look of the poster with the silver as opposed to black or white poster frames. The silver and gray in the litograph matched.
As well, when I began to purchase smaller prints of artwork to surround my Emma litograph, I purchased frames of the 11″ x 14″ size to fit prints that were 8″ x 11″. I found these frames at Winners and/or HomeSense stores in Canada. What I love about both of these stores, is that you can find many decor items for your home at a reduced price that are still stylish and often brand names.
My goal was to have artwork and frames that were more eclectic so the frames and prints were not all the same. Shopping at Winners and HomeSense lent itself well to this as they have a variety of frames in all colors available.
Additionally, having diverse frames and artwork styles made my wall of artwork more interesting. Since my walls are painted a cool light blue, frames of white, black, and silver all matched the paint color well and were cohesive. Black frames on their own, even silver frames on their own, would have been too overpowering in a small bedroom.
The shop is on break right now, but I recommend checking out their excellent hand made prints. I love how the black frames make the sterling silver images pop, even though the inside of the frames are more of a white-ivory tint. Also, I was pleased to be able to find prints that were glamorous, stylish, and feminine.
Furthermore, one my favorite items on my picture wall, is not a picture at all; in fact, it is a spice rack purchased from Modcloth.com in their Vintage Inspired Home Decor and Gift section. The spice rack is a pretty place to store and display my perfume bottles. I’ve also been able to display a few of my favorite cuffs (bracelets). Instead of displaying bracelets or cuffs you could also hang necklaces.
Moreover, I have not seen this spice rack (perfume display), on Modcloth.com for awhile. But ModCloth does have other interesting decor items if you enjoy a Vintage Style. As well, you can find similar spice racks at Walmart and Amazon , but I wasn’t able to find the same one in white, with hooks on the bottom. Your best bet is to explore the web or a store such as Bed, Bath, and Beyond, to find a spice rack that works well to display perfume and jewelry.
In addition, I purchased a couple prints off of Etsy.com from an artist’a shop called Lauren Bolshakov Art . I was thrilled to find more feminine and stylish pieces that added brighter color to my picture wall.
The first print is in the same color family of blues and greens as much of my bedroom. It’s an 8″ x 10″ size and called Vintage Dress Painting. It’s not available anymore but she has some other beautiful pieces of watercolor work.
The second print I purchased from Lauren was called Red Red Wine (see below) and the bright color of the red wine and the movement within the watercolor print drew me to it. Both prints I chose went well with slightly different white frames I found at Winners, in an 11″ x 14″ size because they had to be big enough for 8.5″ x 11″ prints. The red wine print is also a bright pop of color on my picture wall, which I adore.
As well, I did purchase a print (and later a frame) of a lovely print from a blogger I follow, Kelly Van from Le Zoe Musings, which is a “creative lifestyle blog.” Kelly no longer has an Etsy shop but her printing sayinging to ‘Just Breathe and Drink Tea’ was relaxing and cute. Also it’s in a reddish-pink shade.
One last painting (or a copy of a painting) I bought because I loved the impressionist feel to it, was from a shop called Prebrulee.com. The pop of pinkish-red in the painting, ties in with the red wine and tea prints. They all share an accent color on an otherwise serene picture wall and waveguide bedroom in general.
Prebrulee is a neat store that has a great deal of fun jewelry, clothing, stationary, and sometimes, home decor. Their Home and Office Section often has need collectibles, however, I’ve not seen paintings on the website in a long while.
My final framed work around my Emma litograph is my university diploma which I am extremely proud of; nevertheless, I’m searching for the right picture to replace it with, and move my diploma to my home office space.
Finally, I do have a few items on my dresser. As well, I painted both dressers in my room seal gray to match the Emma Litograph. The dresser items, however, are from HomeSense, Winners, and a variety of other decor stores. I find it’s a matter of knowing what you want to display in areas of your home, such as your bedroom, and waiting until you come across the perfect items that are both practical and beautiful.
In addition, if you’re searching for some help in designing your own house or a particular room in your home, such as your bedroom, I encourage you to take a look a theHavenly website for actual Interior Design expertise.
Take their design quiz to determine the decor styles you like best, then choose an interior designer who best matches the decor style for a specific room.
You can receive interior designer aid through a Design Quickie option for free. This provides you a small amount of help in designing a space in your home. It includes a 30 minutes chat session with an interior designer, product recommendations, style advice, and a concierge buying service.
As well you can consider A Havely Mini including 3 initial designs, 1 design concept, 1 design revision, a curated design list, 1-2 weeks of design time, a concierge buying service, and 2-weeks of post design support.
Your third option is the Havenly Full adding on 4-weeks of design support (instead of 2-weeks), 3D Room Visualisation, and a Floor plan, along with everything you receive in the Havely mini.
I would recommend the third option as it provides you with the best value for your money. 3D Room Visualisation and floor plans are incredibly helpful in decorating a room in your home as ‘visuals’ always give a person a better idea of what their decor scheme will look like in the end.
Nonetheless, if you’ve knowledge of how to design a floor plan and can easily visualize how your final design will appear, the second option is also great.
See you next time and thanks for stopping by today’s special post!
Prompt: What do you display on the walls of your home — photos, posters, artwork, nothing? How do you choose what to display? What mood are you trying to create?
Some walls in my home are pretty empty, while others are full. In my bedroom, I have a full picture wall with artwork and a couple other ornaments displayed around a pictograph of the Emmaby Jane Austen. A pictograph is a picture of something made up by the words of it’s story. I framed it with a poster frame in silver from Michael’s.
There are two silver etched drawings on this photo collaboration wall, prints from an artist on Etsy, of Miss Dior perfume and Audrey Hepburn. I just liked the silver etching, the drawing, of these pictures so I bought whatever black frames would fit these 2 frames at Winners. By this point I had decided to mix the frames up so I bought a tarnished silver looking frame with a picture in it that says ” Ok. Breathe. and drink tea. This is a print done by blogger Le Zoe Musings on WordPress. Kelly, the lady who designed the teacup print also works for gloss48, a company that offers limited edition makeup and hair products or products that are just brand new.
On the bottom left hand side is a spice rack from Modcloth and I fill it with my favourite perfumes and hang my favourite chunky bracelets off the hooks on the bottom of the rack. In the middle of the right side is my University Diploma in which I graduated with distinction and below that a pink, orange, and green picture of flowers sitting on a Lilly pad. It is on a canvas that boxes out so there is no need for a frame. But the picture is one of my favourites, impressionistic and insanely colourful. I am always drawn to it first.
My last two pictures are framed by two different white frames from Winners and they are also by an artist on Etsy who does watercolours. They are two of my most loved pictures as well. In the top left corner are three dresses in pea green, blue, and grass green at the modistes hanging up on three stands. I adore the colour scheme and the artsy look of the painting. The picture on the the top right side is a picture of wine being poured into a glass and I love the movement in this picture. It is more modern but if you know anything about painting glass or crystal is difficult to paint so the artist does a fantastic job with that and the movement of the wine makes you want to drink wine, to enjoy a glass yourself.
This is one important wall in my house and I will show you one other from the kitchen where I painted fruit during the Oilers 2006 play off run to vent my frustrations. All three pictures are done in acrylic and framed just on the outside of the canvases with frames from Michael’s.
It’s only the end of January and I have already begun to pick out pieces I would like to add some version of to my spring wardrobe. The most exciting aspect of Spring Fashion is the introduction of color back into our black/charcoal/and almost black colors of the Fall/Winter wardrobe pieces we have all bought. I have a special affinity for the pastels of spring but I’m seeing some wonderful bright colors already emerging into the Spring fashion line up.
In reality though, we are in a transitional season. It is still January, barely February, and a month ago we were all shopping our little hearts out at boxing day and Christmas sales. It seems too soon to be looking forward to spring but I don’t know about where you live but where I live, we are already starting to receive spring like weather after a horribly cold September to mid January. I am really excited to have the opportunity to share with you these items I want to wear in warmer weather and that in Edmonton, where we have 8 months of Winter, I can already feel Winter letting go of its cold grip even if it is only to -10 Celsius.
1. This is actually a buy I’ve made recently. They just happened to have my size left on http://www.modcloth.com and I love light blue, not to mention having put on a little weight this winter, I was looking for a bathing suit that was sexy but covered up my stomach and butt a bit. My boyfriend and I are considering travelling to Las Vegas in late spring so this seemed like the perfect purchase this pay cheque.
2. and 3. Two really big colors in fall are pink and that lovely mint green that has been popular the last
couple of years. Since I have collected a lot of mint items in my spring/summer wardrobe I am looking at a couple of light pink items. Although, I am hoping that the pink that is more of a yellow based pink now in early spring fashion will go towards a more blue-pink come late spring and summer, but I did find a dress at Banana Republic that is a perfect transitional item especially if you are working. It is in powder puff pink and I am seriously thinking about purchasing it. The other pink item I want I have only found in Jimmy Choos shoes now and they are a cool light pink pump. I am hoping I can find them in leather later, in a cheaper brand. Around $500 for one pair of pumps is a bit beyond my budget.
4. Another lovely item I actually purchased from the TeamBuy website that is more of a winter item but still a great spring item if the weather is nippy, are 2 pairs of black leggings with some fuzzy fleece on the inside. The fleece helps greatly with the winter winds and I can’t believe I purchased such a great buy off of TeamBuy. I mean, they were $29.00 for 2 pairs of thick tight like leggings. Not to mention, unlike the fleece tights I purchased from Anthropologie, they are not pilling (polyester has a long fiber that does not shed. That is why you get little balls all over your favorite pair of tights, they need to be the right mix of stretchy fabrics.)
I hope you enjoyed my little spring fashion line up. I will have some other pieces when more spring items do actually come out. But while cyber-shopping these are a few things that I have found and been pleased with.
I am a fashion junky and if I had the money I would probably be shopping a lot more than I do. Then again, all the clothes piled in my closet and dressers sometimes don’t seem all that wearable. Maybe it’s because they are all sitting there in my bedroom in a pile ( a big dark pile because winter clothes are dark). And maybe it’s because clothes just seem so bright, shiny, and new in stores and so old, used, and worn at home. But you know what? Clothes in your closet and dressers can seem lovely again too. One way to do this is to truly only pick pieces you love each season. Don’t go overboard when you go shopping because you can only wear so many clothes anyways. And if you want something that is just a fad, don’t spend a lot of money on it. Wait until it goes on sale mid-fall or at Christmas, and then buy your desired fad clothing. But there are some classic pieces of clothing you can spend more money on each season.
In this article, I intend to show you some of the things I believe are classic this season. These are clothing that you can keep in your wardrobe to wear again somewhere down the line, next year or the year after that. You should be able to find these items in every price point. All it takes is a keen eye and actually spending the time looking for quality items of clothing in classic shapes .
Classy Half Leather or Pleather Leggings
Yes, leggings are still in and as comfy as they are, let as remember that they are not pants. Leggings are more like tights and your rear end needs to be at least partly covered when wearing them, especially if you tend to be a little more curvy such as I. Leather leggings can be found simply in leather or pleather but a smarter buy is to get a thicker pant type legging with pleather or leather on the front. That way your legs can still breath in your leggings too and do not stay sweaty all day. You maybe able to pair your pleather pants/leggings with a shorter top depending on how thick the material of your leggings are but your safest best is always going with a tunic, a longer shirt, or at the very least a structured jacket so your leggings do not look so casual.
A Real Leather Jacket
If you are going to get one of the hot biker cropped leather jackets that are in now, go for the classic choice
and get the real deal. In fact, you will find that the pleather jacket will almost cost you as much as the real leather jacket. Just keep your eye open and look for something on sale if you don’t have the cash on hand. Choose something that is more of a classic cut that is made out of good quality leather. It can be cropped but you might want to get a jacket that has a good body hugging shape to it and that can be worn for multiple seasons. So a jacket without studs and all those little things that make something more of a fad and less of a piece you want to keep around a long time is a must. If you can’t afford leather, there are also some great cropped jackets around in army green, shiny black, quilted grey, and other options if you don’t want to go with the leather jacket. Why pleather leggings and a leather jacket? Well you’ll probably have the jacket longer than the leggings and the leather leggings also seem to be a bit more pricey then the jackets, some I’ve seen around $700. Choose where you’ll spend your money wisely!
A Classy Black Dress
Practically, every fashionista is going to tell you to pick a black cocktail dress to put in your wardrobe. Anthropologie is one of my favorite stores for fancy dresses but I think that choosing one of their more simply cut dresses has some advantages. I love this dress that has a floaty fitted shirt that is peplum and an attached skirt because it’s classy. But the flirty top takes it up a notch yet it is simple enough to leave plane for an event or dress up at different levels with sweet jewelry such as pearls, chunky bracelets, slim black boots (or even red) or sexy heels. A little black dress, or a few black dresses are also great to wear for an evening event or to work to look polished and put together.
Heels with a Cuff
Every girl loves her heels and guess what ladies there all coming on sale this Christmas season and Black Friday. Pumps are great because they go with everything and you can buy them in any color. It is always interesting to me to see the little changes basic pumps go through each fashion season. Sometimes they have a little chunkier heel, sometimes the heel is a little cute kitten heel, and sometimes it’s va-vavoom red heels that make your legs look crazy long and are hard to walk in. This season I’m obsessed with pumps with a cuff. Some of these cuffs are more like thin little straps but the best one’s are thicker such as these cute NineWest heels in black and fashionable nude. Why not get a pair in both?
1 or 2 Well Made Sweaters Here’s what I’ve learned after buying season after season of crappy sweaters that fade and look awful by the end of January: spend your money on sweaters made of natural fibers with some stretch and good natural fiber blends such as silk, cotton, and wool. Why should you do this? Because natural fibers breath and hold in heat better and they are also cozier. Not to mention that these sweaters will last you all season if not longer, maybe 2 seasons. One of my favorite stores to buy sweaters and cardigans at is Banana Republic because a great number of the materials they are made out of are natural fibers. The color holds better and I have had these sweaters to layer and keep me warm 2 to 3 years. Every year I add 1 or 2 in the latest style or color but I can pull out an old one too and it looks almost just as great as it did when I bought the sweater originally. Even though that sweater may cost me $85 to begin with its better than those acrylic and nylon sweaters that are equally expensive or less expensive and wear out easily. I just got a couple of Banana Republic sweaters today and am pleased to say I even got them sale as Banana Republic often has 25% to 40% off sales on certain items at different times.
So those are my classy fashion picks for the winter. Some of them such as the black dress and silk, cotton, or wool sweaters are seemingly simple things to think of to buy but all my picks are classic and I guarantee won’t end up in that pile of clothes on your chair or floor but will see you through until you can add your classy spring pieces to brighten up your dark winter wardrobe.
What are some of your favorite classic picks for winter? What pieces have you bought in earlier seasons that have lasted you through more than one winter season?
Lately, I have found that a lot of the shopping I have done for myself and for other people (for Christmas) has become internet based. I have learned a few things about internet shopping for clothing and beauty products along the way. For instance, it is best for sizing if you know what size you or somebody else are, or you can check the sizing chart on the site you are on. The best internet shopping sites have return labels included so you can return what you ordered for free; but after a couple of purchases on the same site you will find out your size, and how the clothes fit in general and should have to return items less often. It is also best if you know what styles look good on you. So maybe you want to take a trip to the mall first and just go toyour favorite stores and try on different styles of clothing. For example, A-line skirts look better on women with hips and pencil skirts are good at creating curves for women who do not have such curvy hips. Depending on where you order from, you also want to keep in mind you may have to pay Custom’s fees on some out of country sites; prices which increase, as the total price of your order increase. For example, I ordered a dress off of the website www.houseoffraser.com a British Department stor,e not realizing that a dress that was 145 pounds in Britain was more like $245.00 Canadian dollars and $60.00 in Custom’s fees; so you want to be aware of the value of different currencies in other countries. Sometimes though, an item is worth the extra cost despite the custom fees, it is entirely up to you. One thing good about House of Fraser for example, was that even though I had to pay to return the dress, House of Fraser returned both the cost of the dress and original cost of shipping for the dress to me back onto my MasterCard. Good stores in Canada will also let you return you order at their in store locations. Jacob for instance, will return your online purchases in store, but charge you $5.00 for each item you wish to return by Canada Post. Lastly, despite the fact that it is more secure to pay by PayPal, the only way you can return a PayPal item is online and not at the actual store. So without further ado, here are my 5 current favorite online stores and some important information on them.
Banana Republic or the Gap often have sales from 25% to 40% off one or more items if you sign up for their newsletter. For instance, today Banana Republic has a 30% off sale called “Merry Monday.” Sometimes these sales are only in store, sometimes only online, and sometimes both. Also, BR and the GAP will sometimes mail coupons to you if you subscribed to their emails. Because they have sales or coupons it is usually best to wait to buy until these discounts are available unless you think an item is particularly cute and will go fast.
Shipping free over $50.00
Your shipment comes with a return labes by which you can return items that do not fit for full refund by BR or the Gap through Canada post, so free to return. No exchanges by mail but easy to reorder or even order one of each size to try on. Can return at stores.
Regular sizes 0 to 14 for women. Also, have petite, and sometimes tall ( ie. tall jeans inseam at the Gap).
Unique retro and vintage based designs. If you are looking for something interesting or a pretty dress this is the place to shop.
Ships USPS around $11.00 for items around $100.00 takes around 2-3 weeks, or around $26.00 for faster shipping through UPS in about one week.
You have to pay to return your items but you have 30 days to return so you can choose the cheapest method possible for shipping so probably around $8-$14 dollers to return an item through USPS through Canada Post.
Can exchange on the shipping/return invoice
Canadians must pay through PayPal which is more secure than credit cards. You can even just put your credit card on PayPal.
Modcloth is just women’s clothing unlike ASOS or BR and the Gap.
Almost any brand name of makeup, hair products, body products, and perfumes and/or colognes for men and women, available for shipping most anywhere in Canada over $75.00 is free – it adds up fast!
Can Ship returns to Sephora (call them first) at your own expense or even better go into the store Sephora in Canada or the USA and return for free on the same credit card you paid with.
Some items available online in the US are not available in Canada.
Takes a couple of weeks to ship but worth the convenience; nonetheless, it is so much fun going into the store to look at all Sephora’s products – it is equally as good going to the store yourself except that Sephora is usually not out of certain products online.
All order’s come with 3 samples of your choice and you can collect points in store and online on your Sephora card to spend on larger sized samples for 100 and 500 points. Points add up fast!
Those are my 5 favorite current online shopping websites. What are your yours? What kind of incentives do they offer for you to shop online at their stores? Let me know!
Recently, I have been a bit of a well err, shopaholic. I am not sure why this is, there is just something about spring and summer fashion, the flexibility of what you can wear that makes me want to shop.Flexibility because of the nice weather. Not to mention that you can still get some great deals from early spring sales that will be perfect for fall weather. Another factor for me seems to be the frustration of not receiving the packages I have ordered in a timely manner. I have ordered a few things off of www.modcloth.com and www.eberjey.com and have yet to receive anything; in turn, this makes me want to order more for some reason from other sites that will send my purchases on time. My last purchase has been off of http://www.gapcanada.com , a pair of jeans (straight and longer so I can wear some new heels with them and a cardigan in bright blue) and that was today. But I have decided this has to stop. There will always be sales, and 20 %, 30 %, even 40 % off. There will be things I absolutely love that I cannot buy because you cannot spend all your money on shoes, clothing, jewelry, and makeup. Not to mention I am going to Las Vegas in a month which means, yes, more shopping. So my goals are 1) Do not shop anymore until Las Vegas 2) In Las Vegas I can only spend $300.00 at the very most shopping. Goal number 1) will be difficult given my boredom lately and love of online shopping, there is just such variety out there, and if you know how it is going to fit already…. And number 2) I think $300.00 (and it’s what I saved up for Vegas shopping) should be more than a sufficient amount to spend for 5 days – although I have found that once you start shopping in Vegas and find all those unique Vegas deals and items it can be hard to stop. But realistically, I will probably find one dress I like and a couple t-shirts. Usually I find it is better to shop at home ( in Edmonton we have first class shopping at West Edmonton Mall, online, and several of are smaller malls) so I do not regret my rash of shopping this past couple months. But I do strive to maintain some more self control when it comes to shopping the rest of this summer. After Las Vegas, I am good until September, that will give me a chance to replenish my savings too.
All this being said, I wanted to share with you some of the items I have purchased over the past couple months. Here they are as follows, and please do not judge:
1. Eberjey – Giovanna Fashion Collection/India Collection – This is not exactly what I bought. I got a Cami in the same color and some shorts to wear to bed, as well as some lingerie that looked just like this but in black.
2. Modcloth – I have gone a little modcloth crazy and have bought a pair of heels, a bathing suit for my trip, a dress, and a summer top. The shoes match the dress which has some ivory knit lace on the back and the bathing suit does have matching bottoms.
3.Banana Republic Canada – After taking back one BR dress, I settled on another. It is great, can be strapless and has sticky plastic tape inside the bra so the top stays up; at 25% off.
4. Etsy Jewelry – I got a lovely blue peacock colored stone necklace, a pearl bracelet, and a matching pearl necklace to that bracelet.
5. Gap Canada – A pair of Real Straight Jeans and Dolmen Sleeve pocket sweater; both at 20% off.
So here ends my shopping frenzy. I am strictly on a diet of budget only spending for the summer (with the exception of Vegas) so wish me luck! And maybe, you will like a few items I found to compliment my spring/summer wardrobe and wisely spend a few dollars on one or two. Do not go all out crazy like me. Enjoy!
