——

I used to be a mermaid,

They stole me from my sea.

My sisters cried and sang for me;

But no siren’s song,

Could sway those ‘Jolly Sailor Boys.’

I used to be a mermaid,

They stole me from my sea.

Said I had to walk and run,

But my legs were far too weak.

I stumbled, I fell,

These legs are pure Hell;

Some incantations, my tail was gone.

I used to be a mermaid,

They stole me from my sea.

My tears required for eternal life,

They fell in floods and showers,

I drowned them in my tears.

Gaia’s answer from the sky,

Her thoughts of ‘Jolly Sailor Boys.’

My teeth tainted razors,

Ripping throats for dread,

Of what a Captain would do to me,

A creature pure, unperverted,

Mermaid tears were dredged.

I used to be a mermaid,

They stole me from my sea.

A siren’s ancient rage awoke,

Became my new morality.

And though I long for waves,

My sisters who live below;

I cannot even swim in the corner,

The ocean’s rejected me.

It seems to me, my tears did mix,

In some fountain of ancient yore;

My only place to freely swim,

So I swam all the more.

I used to be a mermaid,

They stole me from my sea,

Now I bathe in this youthful fountain,

No immortality I wanted;

Only my home in open seas.

I wasn’t given a choice,

Only vast eternity.

Forever I was altered,

And one by one they drank;

Those ‘Jolly Sailor Boys’ dead fell,

Into the sea, their bodies compelled.

I used to be a mermaid,

They stole me from the sea

Brought me to gates of immortality,

Trapped in a glass crate.

And when some old spells,

Had me walking regularly;
I hummed my mother’s tune,

Singing for the lost men,

No more ‘Jolly Sailor Boys;’

For Gaia turned on them.

I used to be a mermaid,

They stole me from my sea

Though, I’m now no mermaid,

I sing the same old tune,

I’ll sing it long, in a siren’s song,

Luring ‘Jolly Sailor Boys,’

That tore me from my sea;

Because when I was once a mermaid,

Those ‘Jolly Sailor Boys’ stole me.

Great green leafy trees are reflected on the lagoons glimmering surface. High above the actual trees dance in the breeze, drooping, almost as if to kiss the water with their branches. On the shore are large rocks which I take and skip across the lagoon. The mermaids will love me for this.

I continue to skip rocks until a few lovely mermaids pop their heads out of the forest lagoon and give me dirty looks. They hope it’s Peter, but when they see it’s only Peter’s shadow, they roll their eyes diving back under the water beneath the lillypads and floating flowers.

No one anywhere thinks much of a shadow and they don’t realize shadows are beings too. So the mischief in me has unsewn myself from Peter Pan. He’s been chasing me all day but I’m quicker and smarter than he. It’s why I decided he should take a trip home to a little girl I fancy; she is called Wendy.

Well, January has passed already. For me, it feels like it’s still right after Christmas. However, I won’t complain when the winter flies by fast — the sooner it flies by, the warmer it will be in Alberta.

But this too depends on several little ground hogs tomorrow, all who we do not really know if they’ve seen their shadow. So we’ll see, as for now some quotes to make you think. Cheers!

Photo Prompt: Poetry – Ballad – “Jolly Sailor Bold” (Reworked) #amwriting #poetry #mermaids

Thanks to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting this prompt, focusing on having a Refrain in a song/poem/prose; some kind of repeating phrase. Also, I’m including and reworking lyrics to “My Jolly Sailor Bold,” from Pirates of The Carribean Four: On Stranger Tides, using Disney’s words as a Refrain or chorus and my own for the verses.

See HERE for original lyrics.

——

Once there was a lass and she,

Didn’t fit at home, said Mum:

“Be gone girl,” so she went, roamed,

Wandering the earth, she’d hum.

—-

They say she was a fey girl with,

Eyes gleaming like stormy seas,

She cared little much for love,

Little much did life, her please.

—-

One evening in the moonlight,

Her fair voice sang a song.

A mournful melody cried,

For her jolly sailor longed.

“My heart is pierced by Cupid

I disdain all glittering gold

There is nothing can console me

But my jolly sailor bold.”

—–

They say he swam away,

In shipping built his good name.

His ship sailed around the world,

He recalled his love, her games.

—–

She watched for him each sun –

Set, she went about each day.

Crying sadly for her sweetheart,

Sailor she feared lost and astray.

—-

He thought nothing of her tears,

No thoughts of her at all;

Coming home he brought a wife,

 A final jump made girl fall

—-

Mermaids saved the young girl,

A woman-fish swam so free;

Sang out to foolish sailors,

“Come join me in the sea.”

—-

“My heart is pierced by Cupid

I disdain all glittering gold

There is nothing can console me

But my jolly sailor bold.”

—-

Tale Weavers Prompt: Poem – Octelle – “Story Line Wrote”

Thanks to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting this weeks prompt — Paper Back Writer:

” What is your great novel/novella/collection of short/flash fiction/poetry/ pulp paperback/graphic novel? Of course, you don’t have to write it, just write about it.

Weave any sort of tale;  in the abstract or concrete; as you or a character of yours; being accepted for publication; editing process; book tours – remember you ‘just wanna be a paperback writer.'”

I’m still working on a novel called: How Was Last Night For You? I’m editing it in second draft. Still a lot of work to do and haven’t had the time to work on it lately. This Octelle poem illustrates the story line roughly:

She wants love, but it keeps slipping,

Through her fingers, the Sirene dripping.

She’s a regular girl, too kind,

Believes in people and magic finds —

In her paranormal world sound,

Curses, mermaids, sea witch found.

Nina narrator, life gripping,

Focus and ire of a mer-witch.

John wasn’t smart at twenty-five,

Lied about girl, she cursed him live.

Where ever he wondered,

Strange events encountered.

People got hurt, women injured.

No love; witch’s wrath incurred.

Sees Nina drinking Flirtinie,

Sparks, passion, between them ignite.

A mermaid she is, sea witch too,

She’s experienced pain, heart broke through —

Victorian romance; cad —

He’d a mistress, kids they had.

Clued in after his death –cried,

Traveled, came home to new guy.

Adare never changed, men still lie.

No broken girl now -she’s Talise.

Characters wrote, story occurs,

Talise hates Nina — it’s inferred.

She cursed John left his soul burnt,

She wants John back, she’s a flirt.

Evil, she’ll never gain him through,

Her magic; Nina loves John true.

Witch’s wrath, all will suffer –die?

No one can say; writer yet edits.
