Lacey shook out her golden hair. Deborah eyed her daughter,” We’re here Lacey, this is where you’ll find out your vocation.”

“But I don’t even know what I’ll wear tomorrow. I’m not even sixteen.”

“The judges decide. Since long ago, each consecutive group of them provides citizens with the right jobs.”

” I’ve many interests. Not one.”

“Life isn’t fair, Lacey.”

Deborah smoothed her skirt down three times.”They don’t know your thoughts. But the rigorous testing you’ve done, your DNA, genetic lineage, your social interactions, and other scientific data guides the Judges.”

“But you said they don’t know my thoughts?”

“They’re not going to ask for your opinion. They know.”

“That’s the problem, Mom. There’s more than ‘knowing.’ There’s that feeling that tells you your purpose deep down.”

“They Judges don’t consider feelings or emotions. They don’t see people beyond their job skills.”

Deborah shushed Lacey. Her hands trembled. “Whatever they say, Lacey, that’s your vocation.”

“Outcasts don’t last long, your father’s one and that life’s harsh. They’ll watch out for that ‘rebellious spirit’ in you.”

“I can’t keep my true-self masked. I’ll be miserable.”

“No one’s happy here,” Deborah whispered.

But Lacey didn’t hear her. Deborah watched her daughter ascend the ancient silver staircase and knew her daughter would be searching for her father soon.

Saturday Mix: Poem – Cascading Etherees – “Silhouettes and Blessings” #poetry #dVerse #amwriting #SaturdayMix

Thanks to Paul Scribbles from the Poet’s Pub for hosting a #dVerse prompt reply on blessings. I’m combining this #dVerse prompt missed with last week’s Saturday Mix Prompt from Teresa of MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie‘s Prompt on doing a silhouette poem

———–

They’re not completely obvious, often —

Difficult to find, shadowed in,

Darkness, silhouettes hidden by,

Electrifying light so,

Tangerine-orange that —

All behind it is,

Hidden, pitch black,

They are masked,

Easy to,

Miss.

—–

But,

I know,

You have them,

Thankfulness for —

Blessings in disguise.

Shadowed, hidden behind,

Glaring light, such blaring noise,

Searching carefully, you’ll find them,

You’ll see all along what’s been taken,

For granted, unrecognized blessings.

—–

Sometimes they feel like curses, too much work,

Then, seeing others suffer you think,

Realize life’s not at all bad.

You’ve all your basic needs met,

You’ve extra money for,

Luxury and treats,

You’re well cared for,

God’s blessed you,

So share,

Give

—–

Be,

Not mean,

Or spiteful,

To those who beg,

They need a little —

Help; some food, money to —

Make it through the day and —

Eat; find a place to sleep and to,

Clean up; they only want to be like us,

Have their needs met, with the odd treat too.

——

If only we all counted are blessings,

When we were richly cared for, when He,

Made sure we made a living.

Had money to survive.

To buy little extras.

To be comfortable,

Provided for.

We rest, they —

Shiver,

Cold.

——-

They’re

Hurting.

But it’s more,

Than the unloved —

Silhouettes.

Never seen, covered by —

The light in the background scene,

Never visible, dark, unseen,

We miss seeing them these figures who’ll,

Disappear in dark, when sun falls and sets.

Day 16 – NaPoWriMo/A toZ Challenge/FFftPP: Poem – Joseph’s Star – “A Poison Tale Penned” #NaPoWriMo #AtoZchallenge #poetry #flashfiction

Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt is to ” take your inspiration, like our featured interviewee did in the chapbook she co-authored with Ross Gay, from the act of letter-writing. Your poem can be in the form of a letter to a person, place, or thing, or in the form of a back-and-forth correspondence.” The A to Z Challenge letter is O for GoodRead’s quotes and I’m combing these prompts with Roger Shipp’s FFftPP

——–

These bits of paper are covered with lies. They poison your minds. And so long as they exist, you cannot hope to see the world as it truly is.(…)You turn to them for answers and salvation. (…) You rely more upon them than upon yourselves. This makes you weak and stupid. You trust in words. Drops of ink. Do you ever stop to think of who put them there? Or why? No. You simply accept their words without question. And what if those words speak falsely, as they often do? This is dangerous.”

― Oliver Bowden, Assassin’s Creed: The Secret Crusade

———

Read your short,

Letter, it’s awkward,

It reminds me of us,

How the two of us are when —

We’re together,

It’s why I’m,

‘I.’

——

Why,

‘I,’ isn’t us,

And your words they hurt,

Didn’t know you felt so strongly

Had no idea ‘us’ was,

So much more to —

You; asking —

Why

——-

You

Never said,

As much, why you held —

Back; I guess to not be hurt?

I didn’t mean to hurt you.

It’s just I was more,

To you, than

You —

——-

Meant

To me; I —

Try to understand,

How I led you on; when I —

Should’ve stopped this charade.

Didn’t know you what,

What you felt,

Meant

——–

So,

Now I —

Read your words,

Poisoned tongue you have,

Poison words too in this —

Inked letters; they are —

Killing me,

So.

——

Not,

Only my —

Realization.

I should’ve seen the ‘writing,

On the wall,’ but I was living

Loving another,

I loved you,

Not.

——

Now,

Your poison

In ink hides easily.

Poison you’ve written with and —

You’re probably smiling now,

Because I’m dying,

Are you glad?

Now

——

You,

See I; peer —

Into the past, I —

Know now you were hiding in —

Plain sight; wickedness masked,

You never loved me.

And I loathe

You.

——

Truth

I was not

Attracted to you,

I was being nice, I thought —

We were great friends until now.

I know the real you,

Ignoring,

Truth.

——

Hours,

Later my,

Family finds my corpse.

I’ve written one word down for

Your hours of freedom

Are waning,

Hours.

——-

Lost,

You’ll only,

Be free a short while,

Then justice will reign, they’ll find —

You; you’re not the only one —

Who kills with poison,

In death you’re —

Lost
