Lush Obsession

I have been loving Lush products lately. One reason is because they are all natural products and an even bigger reason I love using them is because they work well and are at a  good price-point. I want to note that some of Lush’s products come in containers you can return (once you have 5) for a face mask. Just rinse them out and dry them then take them  into the store for exchange. In the products I’m going to be talking about today both the Lemony Flutter and Ocean salt come in containers Lush can reuse. Here’s all the products I’ve been using lately:

1. Lush Daddy-O Violet Shampoo – $29.95 for 500 mL bottle – This shampoo smells lovely with a lasting scent of spice cookies. It is found in 3 different sizes and price points but I think buying the biggest bottle gets you the most for your money. It is a very dark purple shampoo for people with blond or grey hair and it keeps your blond and grey from looking brassy. Since it is such a dark violet you don’t need very much and you only need to use this a few times a week. You can use your regular shampoo on other days. Or if you’re like me you can use it every day to keep your hair soft and smelling great. I first received a sample of this at Lush before I bought a big bottle so if you’d like to just try it out first you can always ask Lush employees at the store for a sample first. But I think you’ll like it and be pleased by how long a large bottle lasts

2. Lush American Cream Conditioner – $29.95 for 500 mL bottle – I was a

little surprised at how great this conditioner is. I am very picky with conditioner as I need one that is moisturizing but won’t weigh down my hair when I curl it, for instance. This conditioner is medium strength but keeps my hair conditioned well and smells like strawberry and vanilla. It is a customer favorite at Lush and I love how my hair does not end up frizzy or heavy as some conditioners might cause it to be.. I completely recommend it as it also lasts a long time. I also think it is worth it to buy the big bottle over the smaller 250 mL and 125 mL sizes.

3. Lush Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter – $16.95 for 45 g – My new favorite foot cream is Lemony Flutter. When I was in hospital I would wear flip-flops around and my feet were getting so dry. Although this product is called ‘ Cuticle Butter’ it works on your whole foot. It has a lovely real-lemon smell and softens your calluses and any dry skin on your body. I was really impressed with how moisturizing it is without being too oily. Although, it seems like you only receive a little container it goes a long ways and lasts quiet a while even if you are using it every couple of nights to keep your feet moisturized and callus free. Trust me, it’s worth the purchase next to any foot cream out there.

4. Lush Ocean Salt Self Preserving – $35.95 for 250 g – I like scrubs that smell great

and leave my body and face feeling soft. Lucky this scrub, works on both the body and the face and is mixed with fresh avocado and coconut to leave your skin feeling baby soft. You just take a handful of it in the shower and scrub your skin everywhere and voila you are set after rinsing off. There wasn’t any of the large size when I bought this so I just bought the 125 g size and I used it once or twice a week and it lasted about 3 weeks. Because of the type of product it is — sea minerals or salt — it is not the kind of product that is going to last you a very long time. So, you could argue you are maybe not getting your money’s worth. But I enjoyed using the sea salt for a treat for my skin. I wouldn’t buy it all the time but every now in then it’s wonderful and if you keep it for a long period of time it won’t go bad because it is self preserving.

5. Lush Sugar Lip Scrub in Mint Julep – $9.95 for 25 g – I actually purchased this lip scrub before Christmas when my lips were dry and there was lots of dead skin on them due to dry winter weather. The lip scrub is basically made up of sugar with a few different types of oils and peppermint flavoring in mint julep. It comes in other flavors such as bubble gum, honey trap, and popcorn for your enjoyment. Basically you pick a bit of the sugar mixture up with your finger and spread it on your lips. Then, you press your lips together and rub them together to get the dead skin off of your lips, then you simply lick away the remaining sugar off your lips and put on your favorite lip balm or stick. Your lips are left smooth and feeling great! It lasts a very long time I have had the small jar for about six months and I still have half of it left.

Saturday Matters

I have been trying to stay busy as classes have wrapped up for me. The last couple years has ended in spring with me and a bunch of ebooks to read. I am reading  Grey the Fifty Shades Grey from Christian’s point of view. I like it because it’s interesting to have his view on Ana and I dislike it for the same reason. At times he is in such awe of Anastasia and wonders how she could have a good effect on him. At other times I just wish he’d keep his perverted dirty mind to himself because unlike Ana’s view of the story, you’re not just seeing a sweet mostly tolerant Christian, your also seeing a dark sometimes gross and misspoken Christian in his thoughts. I’m positive guys are the more perverted sex in real life, in Grey most definitely. What would interest me more was to see what he is thinking when he has changed and decided not to be the dominant but the loving boyfriend who wants to marry Ana. That would share the sweetness of the original books. And I just found out today E.L. James is indeed planning to do Fifty Shades Darker  from Christian’s view, so for that I am happy.

It’s Ramadan and I detest it a bit as holy as it is for Muslims. To me this just means forty days where I hardly get to see my boyfriend. And if I do it’s 11:00 pm at night and difficult if not impossible some nights to stay up and see him. Plus, I really do not think it’s healthy that he is not drinking water during the day, especially in hot weather or in his hot apartment. He tells me he is use to it but I still don’t believe that that is healthy.

I have to decide on something new in school. I want to do Creative Writing but an MFA is so expensive. A certificate is expensive so I might as well get the MFA. Editing is just not for me I am not that detailed and I can’t get my marks above or at a seventy. That’s not good for editing. I’m just more of a writer I suppose. But the good news is I have finally found someone at the University of Alberta willing to work with me to finish my last course in Residential Design so I can get that Certificate from home and not have to go to class because I can’t do the night classes. I will be taking History of Furnishings and doing my own studying at home and going in the day to write the exams. Any assignments I will also hand in in the day to the Liberal Studies office. So, that’s something exciting. After, I think I will just look for more writing courses. Simon Fraser University still had some writing courses you could take online but not in their Certificate for Creative Writing. For now, that might be a good idea until I can do my MFA in Creative Writing at UBC.

I’ve also started a new feature on my blog Literary Lion on my blog by I am Smith on Wednesday’s. It’s a 400 word story based on a word prompt. It’s great to have the freedom to write more and if anyone wants to join please check out one of my Literary Lion blogs for the link at the bottom of the page to Laura’s page. This is also means I have a ton more reading to do along with my Tuesday feature Flash Fiction For Aspiring Writers so I will do my best to read all that I can and comment but if I miss you one week I’m sorry.

Also, I am a big fan of Lush products. If you love natural products that are lovely for your

skin and hair I encourage you try them. I recently got a purple shampoo (for blond and grey hair) and a great nourishing conditioner. Plus, I don’t think I have ever written to you about their lip scrub so that blog to come as soon as I get around to it as well as a makeup blog of a few odds and ends.

That’s all for now.

Using Natural Products for Skincare

Prompt: Write a global issue connecting it to a personal issue

I can’t go to deep into this, but I see the amount of chemicals used in many drugstore products. Especially, I am thinking about all the makeup that has parabens, and sulfates (etc.) and other chemicals that many woman are washing with or putting on their skin. The makeup just sits there all day and I don’t think much of it is good for your skin and causes breakouts, dry skin, and later, things like cancer or skin damage (etc.)

I have good reason to be concerned about this because I love makeup but I have to be extremely careful what I put on my skin because I will break out from chemicals in makeup or develop rashes. This is why I have begun to really look into the makeup I purchase. Is it natural? Does it contain products I can actually read? I have invested in a lot of mineral makeup from makeup lines such as Benefit Makeup, Purminerals, Tarte, Mac Mineral, , Bobbi brown, and Clinique, Even though a couple make ups I use such as Clinique and Bobbi brown aren’t quite natural they are gentle on my skin and often have mineral powders and other products in their lines of makeup. For bath products a big one I love to use is lush. Everything is fresh and produced with products I can read.

I’m not sure it is possible for people, especially woman to use natural and mineral products all the time but there is enough products out there now that we can try to use at least some of those products in our routines.

LUSH: Marilyn Hair Mask and Prince Charming Shower Gel

Good Afternoon everyone. I have promised for a while a review on LUSH’s Marilyn Hair Mask and Prince Charming Shower Gel, so here it is:

www.lush.ca
http://www.lush.ca

Marilyn Hair Mask – This hair mask provides “soft, brightness, and shine” for blond locks. It makes blond hair blonder. I have hair that goes past my shoulders and I was able to get about 4 or 5 masks out of the container. You apply the mask all over dry hair and let it sit for about 20 minutes then rinse off in the shower and follow with shampoo and conditioner. I did not mind this mask. I think it is a good way to keep that really bold shiny blondness in your hair but if you are just looking for a mask that is nutritious and moisturizing for blond hair this is not the mask. I actually found that at this time of year in the dead of winter, Marilyn made my hair dry and it took my hair a couple of days to recover from the mask. Everyone may not find that this occurs with the Marilyn mask but I decided that it is not really the mask for me. Not only did it make my hair blonder but it made my low lights fade, which was not my intention. So maybe, I think, this is a better mask for the middle of summer when your skin and hair is not dry and you are, if you’re a blond, going for that bombshell Marilyn blond.

Prince Charming Shower Gel – This shower gel is a “sweet, fruity blend of

www.lush.ca
http://www.lush.ca

pomegranate juice, marshmallow, and vanilla pod infusion.” I loved this shower gel. It is thick and foaming so you do not use up a large amount of shower gel in 1 use. And the most important aspect of it is that it smells divine, so fruity and a bit cinnamony. Thank goodness I didn’t smell the marshmallow as I hate that smell. I bought a large 500 ml bottle of this limited edition Valentine’s Day shower gel and it was so worth it. Unfortunately, if you didn’t happen to grab it in store or order online you will have to wait for next year to try it but  keep it mind or write it down because it cleans well and smells awesome and is a definite must have for next Valentine’s Day for you and your special someone!

Random Friday Post

I had big plans this Friday, to read through 2 chapters in my Study Guide for Editing 110 as well as some of the additional reading that is recommended in the Study Guide such as reading about punctuation, spelling, and hyphenation in the textbook. Not to mention, there are added readings at the back of the Study Guide. As I surmised yesterday, I had high hopes of finishing all of this reading but in reality, I am only probably going to be able to finish the textbook reading if I concentrate on it. The textbook is a great guide, something I think I will treasure as I continue to edit. It is called The Copyeditor’s Handbook, 3ed. and it is written by Amy Einsohn. The caption on the book reads that it is ” [a] guide for Book Publishing and Corporate Communications” and it includes exercises and an answer keyIs it wrong to love your textbook? To drink in every word as if it were ambrosia. But I think I have found a career I want to do tremendously, along with writing. Plus, it is a career I can do freelance so I’m looking forward to the future. So, please don’t mock me for loving my textbook.

Also, I received a couple LUSH products today that I can’t wait to do a beauty blog on for you. I wanted to treat myself and a

wonderful smelling body wash and a great hair mask which are naturally made, are great ways to do that. I purchased LUSH’s Prince Charming Shower Gel in the 500 ml size which include “fresh pomegranate” and “grapefruit oil” and Marilyn a hair mask that is a “pre-wash for blonds who want lighter, brighter hair.” I was a bit bummed they did not have my H’Suan Wen Hua hair mask because I love its cinnamony spicy smell but I have tried the Marilyn mask before too and it is pretty great. So, in the future look for a blog on these 2 fine products. I am especially excited about the body

wash, I love smelling great out of the shower and using a product that just wakes you up.

I also wanted to mention to you this great trilogy of books I am reading, or trying to read, because it’s hard to study and have good books to read both at once. They are by Sylvain Reynard and she is romance writer but a Canadian writer to my great happiness and what I really love about this series is her love of and knowledge of Dante and his literature The Inferno and how it contributes to the overall tone and characters of the book. The books are about a a 23-year old Master student named Julia who is studying her Master’s in Toronto. She has the talented Dante specialist Dr. Gabriel

www.amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com

Emerson as her teacher for one of her classes. Gabriel is not only her professor but the older brother of one of her best friend’s and the son of  a now dead second mother to her, Grace.

Year’s ago when she was 17-year old, she and Gabriel spent a romantic night together in the apple orchard and they both thought they were the love of each other’s life. But then Gabriel disappeared and Julia got lost in the woods and they never saw each other again until Julia had Professor Emerson for her class, but he doesn’t recognize her. The story goes on from that point and there are 3 books in the series and I am 3/4 through the 2nd book. The first book is called Gabriel’s Inferno, the second book is called Gabriel’s Rapture, and the third books is called Gabriel’s Redemption. If you are into romance kinds of books I urge you to read these and am pleased to say Sylvain Reynard is a great writer and storyteller even if she is telling a typical romance tale. It might also interest you to see what a Canadian writer can do as compared to some of her American counterparts. I think she does an awesome job and in many cases tells a better story.

The last item I would like to tell you about in my Friday Random post is that I’m going to the Opera with my parents this Saturday night for opening night of the Opera Die Fledermaus, Revenge of the Bat. I am excited for it because it is supposed to be a funny opera. This is what it’s about:

Gabriel von Eisenstein has been sentenced to a fortnight in jail, but his confinement is preceded by an evening of mistaken identity. At a masked ball, two old flames reunite and flirtations occur between a woman and her husband who don’t recognize each other. One man’s elaborate plan for revenge results in a comedy of errors, accompanied by some of opera’s most catchy music.

So, it should be a good time. I am able to dress up and have a little wine at intermission and the opera sounds great.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

LUSH Cupcake Fresh Face Mask and H’Suan Wen Hua Hair Treatment

www.lush.ca
http://www.lush.ca

For Christmas my mom usually gives my siblings and I 2 kinds of items: money and some type of stocking stuffer. This year for my stocking stuffer I received two wonderful products I love from LUSH. One product is a face mask called Cupcake. It is a chocolate face mask that calms oily skin with chocolate and sandalwood and the other product I received  is a hair mask called H’suan Wen Hua, a hair treatment that intensely moisturizes your hair with fresh eggs, herbs, and conditions hair.

According the the website http://www.lush.ca, LUSH face masks “are handmade with the finest essential oils, fresh fruits and veggies, deep cleansing clays and nutrient rich herbs. [They] use active ingredients to address a host of skin needs, from dryness to breakouts to fine lines, and everything in between! When [they] use the term “active ingredient”, this refers to an ingredient that is biologically active. [They] use freshly squeezed juices, extracts, or whole fruits and vegetables in [their] face masks, so they need to be refrigerated . . . to prevent spoilage.”  But just to note, I have found with the chocolate face mask this is not the case. As long as you use the face mask within a couple of months and your bathroom is a cooler environment, the Cupcake face mask will last without refrigeration. If you want to buy a couple at a time, however, it is best to put the mask in the fridge. This is why you can buy a LUSH face mask only in store and not online.  LUSH  “face masks should be used as a treatment, applied once or twice a week to refresh and deep cleanse the skin.”

What I love about the Cupcake face mask is how it makes my skin look and feel after using it. Usually, I will use it when my skin starts to feel as if it is breaking out a bit and feels somewhat oily. I apply a thin layer of the wonderfully chocolate looking and smelling mask to a cleansed face and leave it on for about 5  minutes or until the mask is dry. After, I take a damp face cloth and remove the dried on mask from my face. But you should remember to use an old face cloth as the mask may stain it. The mask also contains some exfoliating particles which are great when you are rubbing the mask into your skin. Once the mask is removed, my skin is not oily and my blemishes decrease considerably. My face does not look red anymore and my skin looks lovely and smooth. If I do happen to break out, it is because the mask is cleaning out the toxins from my skin and I apply the mask again a few days later, then my skin ends up perfect. For a little pot of 60 g and a cost of $7.99 the chocolate mask is an awesome product for oiler skin and great for getting rid of acne and helping to heal other imperfections. I love it and urge you try it I have used it for about a year.

LUSH hair mask H’Suan Wen Hua  is an ” intensely moisturizing treatment for truly unruly hair . . . [y]ou . . . just massage it into your scalp and mane [on dry hair] and let it go to work for 20-30 minutes before shampooing and conditioning the product out. It’s [Lush’s] version of a fresh face mask for the hair, with softening and moisturizing mashed bananas, avocados and olive oil, shine-enhancing balsamic vinegar and fresh eggs. [You can] treat dull, damaged and dry hair right; feed it H’suan Wen Hua and bring it back to life.”

www.lush.ca
http://www.lush.ca

What I love about H’Suan Wen Hua is how amazing it smells and how it makes your hair feel. Since have to leave it in for about 20 minutes or longer it is a long wait but it is well worth the wait because your hair ends up so soft and lovely. Not to mention the clovey spicy smell of the hair mask is amazing and stays in your hair making your hair smell awesome too. You do need a lot of mask for longer hair but because this product works so well I completely recommend it. For $20.95 this mask is a great price and lasts as long as many hair masks out their but for a cheaper price. Plus, it’s all natural.

LUSH has many other great products so I hope you can find some that you will love and will work awesome for your face, hair, skin, or whatever need you might have. Plus, remember you can save 5 LUSH containers and trade them in for a free fresh face mask in store!
