Ring the bells ring them, sound organ pipes too,

Atlantis sinks to obscurity

Earth trembles, calls with a tune sung,

Ring the bells; last time you’ll hear them out loud.

Artistic endeavour, artisan’s craft,

Carved pipes; hear the organ it booms last.

Earthquakes, rocks tumble, falling into time.

A void in the earth barely felt until now.

Modern humans are obsessed by her,

A lost city never found; for it’s day —

Full of vision, construction, art, thought.

City that felt it was the greatest,

The gods thought otherwise; earth swallowed,

City Atlantis whole, taking everyone.

Down to earth’s depths, in it’s belly kept,

Here lies Atlantis hidden, there wasn’t —

Much difference between ‘us’ now and them.

Or hundreds of cities –past, present;

Civilization thousands of years old,

It isn’t that the the ocean and land,

Just ended a city; it’s the people

Inside who forget about decency.

Treating each other terribly and —

No thought for tomorrow, hearts so,

Cold, stone rigid; they sink themselves down,

Into the water until they’re nothing

Nothing but a dream, not even memory,

Just something modern people wonder of,

Forgetting lessons as Atlantis did.

It was difficult living on the farm, being cutt-off from other people when there was a blinding snow storm for days. Marion felt the numbing loneliness deeply and her husband James only amplified her sense of isolation.

They were still a relatively young couple but James made her feel as if she were old, dull, and boring. He barely acknowledged Marion except when he wanted food. He hadn’t actually conversed with Marion for what felt like years.

She observed as James lived alone in his head, always ignoring her attempts to talk. As the harsh winds and snow isolated them in the farmhouse, James isolated Marion in their marriage.

When the blizzard ended, Marion had had enough. She peered at James one last time and left. She drove to the nearest city and caught a flight home

Today’s song prompt is “You Are a Memory” by Message to Bear.

“You Are a Memory” – Message to Bear

Our pictures scattered,

Cross the ground, snowflakes —

Gathering, wetting,

Our times together lost in,

Snow, packing higher, hiding.

Tired of calling, this

Is the last time I’m telling —

You, put my name on,

Your list of significance,

So daft –never mind, too late.

Today I quit you,

Today I saw through you and —

Snow piled up on–

Pictures meaning nothing much,

Goodbye, you’re just glass; I’m steel.

Walking beneath trees,

Nature inviting me back in,

Your frosty winter —

Gone when spring comes with daisies,

Buttercups, roses, grass.

Met you one last time,

Found our pictures decaying,

You looked beneath, saw —

The blue and it was stunning,

But it was never us, thank God.

A Mixed Bag

—–
Chad didn’t have the stomach for being in the military. This was especially apparent to them, as a man Uncle Sam knew rowed them out to a large navy vessel, dropping a grapplinghook when they were close.

Chad and his Uncle Sam boarded the the ship.

“What are we doing here, Uncle?”

“We need to to read your tattoo Chad and find out what information is on there. Why Garig wants it so bad.”

“Do you think he’d really kill me? I’m Mona’s son, wouldn’t that mean anything to Garig?” Chad asked.

Sam sighed.”Garig and Mona went out for a while. For Garig, it didn’t end well because Mona was secretly seeing Tom behind his back . . .”

Sam was interrupted by a pretty woman with red hair and glasses:”Welcome onboard, we’ve been waiting for you,” the woman said in a melodic voice.

Chad was surprised when his Uncle blushed. “Uh, Marrion. It’s good to see you. How are you?”

Marrion smiled, “I’m fine Sam, as well as can be expected after last time . ..” Sam’s eyes went wide.

She turned to Chad. “Chad, let’s go read your tattoo.”

Chad nodded, following Marrion into a lab. He lay on his stomach on a table in an examining room off to the side.

Marrion lifted up Chad’s shirt, seeming to know exactly where his cartoon seal was located.

She chuckled. “I bet you got a few bruises for this tattoo in highschool.”

“Yeah, just a few.”

“Hold still Chad,” Marrion said.

He watched her in a mirror parallel to the table, scanning his tattoo multiple times with an expensive device. Then, he felt a few sharp pokes.

Uncle Sam came into the exam room and Marrion turned to him.

“Sam, this is dangerous information in Chad’s tattoo. You can’t go back after this is revealed. There’s grave peril in this path . . . ”

In the near vicinity, Chad heard gunfire and groaned.

More than Just A Girl

Barb thought the words as she curled her hair and fixed her dress that night, ” [Kye] you must have come up short tonight. Cause I’m always your consolation prize. Usually I fix my hair put on my coat and show up at your door, but no more … ” No longer would she just be for Kye’s pleasure, no longer would she just be used for sex. No longer would she be a no one. Kye and every other guy would recognize as her as a someone who deserved respect. This would be the the last time she did this for Kye, made herself a whore.

She hummed to herself, “now I know I’m just another one of your Friday nights. But I’m no past time this is going to be the last time just to call. When there’s no where else to fall, just a number left to call in a pretty dress and curls. To you I’m just a girl, to you I’m just a girl. . . ” But she was so much more didn’t anyone else see that. With feminism and equality why did everyone just view her as some bimbo. Why did Kye? Why didn’t he see that she was smart, and worth treating well, as a girlfriend not just a girl to sleep with.

Barb thought to herself, to Kye I’m ” [j]ust a girl. talking through the static. Just a girl, to [him] I’m just dramatic. Just a girl, just a silly little thing. And that’s all [he’s] ever seen, but there’s so much more to me.” I am worth something Barb said aloud to herself. “This is gonna be the last time just to call….” She wasn’t giving in anymore. She had value and if people couldn’t see it she didn’t need to be around them. She could find a nicer guy then Kye. Someone who could love her for her. Someone who viewed her as more then just a girl they could “string along like some old sad song.”

After that one last time at Kye’s, Barb didn’t even bother saying goodbye. She ran out the door with freedom in her lungs, no longer just a girl to some loser. She was now a somebody, a woman.
