Three Things Challenge: Fiction – The Homeless Wood Nymph’s Fairytale #3ThingsChallenge #amwriting #fiction

Kate tromped through the bushes, in her wedding gown; at least she’d switched to her flats. The fist fight between her fiancé, and his best man, Jim, had her heart thumping fast. She ran to catch Evan as he disappeared into the pussy willows, into the Woods. The sun burnt her skin, and she swore as makeup and sweat melted in rivulets down her face.

She’d met Ev playing pick-up basketball with friends, walking her fiendish dog, Slash. He was a rescue dog, and Ev abhorred him. Slash won him over when Ev learnt that the accident-prone doxie was left to die by the side of a road — just as him. Both doxie and man had a roped scar down their torso.

Ev had studied law within the military, but had been called up for a tour in Afghanistan. A mine exploded, killing one of his squad and leaving Evan half-dead; his right side slick with blood and guts.

It was two-years since Kate met Ev in the park and nine-months since he proposed, but only six-months with therapy twice-a-week that lessened his nightmares of that insufferable day.

Kate’s lace dress tore as she shoved her train over her shoulder. Where was her made of honor, Rose? She couldn’t get out of her corset alone.

“Ev?” In the stillness of nature she searched. “Where are you? What happened with Jim?” No answer, but leaves crackled. “Ev, please. It’s our wedding.” Little trails of blood marked Kate’s skin as prickled branches scratched.

Kate blew out her breath; a long train and flats made hikes through the woods impossible. “Don’t do this to me, don’t ruin our day because of him. You’re out, and you’re finally getting over the horror — you and Slash. You’re working at you’re dad’s practice, and you’re why I haven’t been drinking these past two-months.”

Kate’s throat was raw, and she heard twigs snap as she neared Ev’s scuff-less shoes cast aside. The pussy willow fluff in the air made her sneeze. She wiped her nose and sniffled. Her allergies alone hadn’t caused her eyes to tinge red and her nose to drip. She rubbed her eyes and screamed. Tears leaked out of her eyes, a constant dripping faucet.

“Kate?” Finally, Ev stepped out from the woods, barefoot. Her handsome guy in a fitted suit. He’d thrown his jacket over his arm, and his sleeves were rolled. He held a beer to his blackened-eye.

“Ev, thank God. I’ve been yelling your name forever. There’s barely cell reception, and we’ve missed our ceremony. What happened with Jim?”

Ev grumbled and rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t want to talk, not today.”

“He’s your best man.”

“Not anymore, Cameron’s in.” Kate sat beside Ev on a fallen tree.

It crackled as she sat, and tore at her lace skirt. “You ruined my dress, you know. My mother will never forgive me.”

Ev rubbed a hand over her cheek. “Your shoulders are sun-burnt and you’re face is red; you’ve raccoon eyes too.”

“How observant of you.”

He grimaced then pressed his lips twice against hers, back and forth. “I would’ve come back. I wouldn’t leave you. I told Cameron to say I needed two hours.”

“Well, Cameron wasn’t fast enough. I saw you leave and ditched my Kate Spade’s. While I searched for you I suffered terrible allergies. Now that you’re discovered, I’m mad at you, Ev.”

“I get that. I still don’t want to talk about Jim.”

Kate huffed. She pushed at Ev’s shoulders. He teetered, but didn’t fall. She shoved him until she was pounding at his chest and shoulders. Then Kate rushed Ev as if she were a linebacker. Ev didn’t fall or talk.

Instead, he sniggered, a hand holding his stomach. “You have to stop! My stomach hurts from holding in my laughter of your whimpiness. Stop running at me; you’re exhausted.”

Kate grabbed Ev’s tie and yanked. “You pick up my train and march us back to the ceremony. Don’t pull this shit on me today.”

Ev’s mouth hung open, and Kate closed it, peach nails digging into his chin. “Bella, luckily, will fix my makeup and hair and even has a little vacuum to get the thorns and twigs from my ruined dress. We’re getting married, screw Jim.”

“You don’t want to know what happened?”

“Not until tomorrow.”

“He–”

“Shut it. There maybe no guests, but your dad surely knows a judge who can help us before tonight.”

“Listen Kate –”

“No, you listen.”

“He hurt me. When that landmine killed Jace, he pushed me too. Jim was scared, but he was also a trained soldier. I asked him straight out who pushed me three-years ago. Today, he chose to tell me it was him who left me to die; him who never returned for me until twenty-three hours later.”

“Selfish prick. I’d like to deal with that coward myself. I’m sorry, Ev. I would’ve wanted to tackle him too”

“I’d have forgiven him anything as long as he’d been honest. No guy we were with would’ve said a thing, and they didn’t. It wasn’t their fight. But, it’s two-years later and he’s lied all this time. I went through so much. I’m still going through it.”

Kate swore and grabbed her phone from her clutch. She texted Rose.

“What are you doing?” Ev’s grey-eyes were wide. His hand stopped her typing.

“I postponed things. We’ll get married at the hall tonight before the fesitivities. It will be a half-hour, not a whole service, thankfully. This time away’s more important.”

Ev nodded and she gawked as tears ran down his face. “I’ve never seen you cry. Not even in physiotherapy.”

He pulled her down next to him, and buried his face in her neck. A wet cooling sensation flowed onto her collar. She barely flinched when his tears stung her sunburned skin. He needed to get this out, and Kate didn’t want him to notice her pain. She embraced Ev, and didn’t move until he was done.

Eventually, he peered up. “How much time?” His voice rasped and his face was flushed.

“Until 5:30 p.m. Rose and Cameron have it arranged. Everyone saw what happened with Jim. They’ll understand.”

Ev pushed a hand through his chocolate hair and wiped his eyes. “My face is probably as red as yours.” Kate leaned against him and the rip of her skirt up her leg made them both wince.

Ev shrugged. “It’s okay, babe. We’ll deal with it. We’ll get through tonight, and everyday after that. You’re my new bestie, and Cameron’s been promoted too.” She smirked and entwined their fingers.

Her thumb brushed over his mouth and his hand wrapped around her head, as he laid it on her shoulder.

Ev played with her curls. “Now, I look like a homeless wood nymph. Your fingers aren’t helping my hair. Ev kissed her neck beneath her ear.

She rested her cheek against his hair, as he laughed. “I like your new look. The amount of leg where your dress ripped is also an improvement.”

Kate elbowed Ev and he sniggered. He placed his hands around her face. “Is it true I’m the reason you haven’t been drinking? Is it because -?” She nodded and Ev’s eyes twinkled. When he grinned and rocked her back and forth, she knew the wedding would turn out.

He placed his hand on her belly. “Let’s hope Slash isn’t the jealous type.”

Beauty: The Messy Lived in Bun

Kate, from The Small Things Blog in a Messy Bun (www.thesmallthingsblog.com)

—–
If you’ve read my blog before you’ll know one of my favourite beauty and lifestyle bloggers is Kate from The Small Things Blog. She does some awesome makeup tutorials as well as her forte, wonderful and easy to follow hair tutorials. Kate used to be a hairstylist before she had her two lovely baby boys.If you have mid- length to longer hair and you have second-day hair, or you want to throw-up your first day hair into a wonderful messy bun, here are a couple of YouTube videos by Kate on how to get the perfect messy bun. The second video works best for me, but you might find her most recent method better for your hair. It is up to you 🙂

To make texture in my own hair for a messy bun, I will often tease the hair at the crown of my head with a salon brand of dry shampoo (such as Bedhead or Scruples) and a rat-tail comb. I also use Unite Texture Spray to give my hair more volume, texture, and a lived in messy look, followed by more teasing at the sides and underneath of my hair.

You can curl or make waves in your hair before you make your messy bun, as Kate often does, but as long as you make your hair a mess with products, such as the two I suggested, I don’t find curling your hair or making waves before is necessary if you have straight hair. If your hair doesn’t stay in a messy state and begins to fall before you put it up into a bun you might want to use hairspray such as Davon’s Strong Hairspray (which you are still able to comb out) before you put your hair up. A light mist will do. As well as a mist over your hair when you are finished styling your hair into a messy bun.

Generally, the messy bun is a hairstyle you want to be able to do fast, to get the hair out of your face, or to do a hairstyle that still looks nice but is able to be done on hair that won’t do much else. A messy bun is a style that works well if you have small children, but it is also stylish enough to do to go have dinner with a friend or another couple.

Please watch these two wonderful messy bun tutorial videos below by Kate. If you can’t see the videos when you receive my blog in your email, you will have to go into my blog to see the videos, or click the links provided above the videos to go right to Kate’s blog page of the tutorial.

14. For how to do your hair like mine please see this tutorial by Kate from The Small Things Blog here and here. Her’s looks a bit nicer and has better pictures. I used a ProBaby bliss to curl my hair which is easier for me then a curling rod to use. It essentially sucks in a section of hair you have combed out. When it beeps you can let go of your hair for a softer curl or hold it longer for more bouncier curls.

Hair Products and Styles Pallooza

It is always a struggle to find the perfect hair products for your hair, especially if your hair is long. For the last few years I have been using Groupons to find hair salons to get my hair done. Not only did it save money but it was interesting to talk to various hair stylists and finally, find the hair stylist that I was going to stay with. In Edmonton, Alberta, Canada my favourite places to visit for a haircut and/or highlights were ChromeDandy SalonEvelline Charles DowntownFluid Hair, and Icon Hair. I ultimately, went with Icon for my hair. My hair stylist does a fab job and there is also a spa associated with this hair salon. But my second choice would be Fluid because they did a great job on my hair. Unfortunately, there is no spa attached, they’re just a hair salon.

The products that I have been using on my hair have been from Fluid and Icon. I like them because they work well with my hair and address specific issues I deal with.

  1. Davines Strong Hairspray
    http://www.us.davines.com Davines Strong Hairspray

    1. Davines Strong Hairspray – (www.us.davines.com) – $29.00 -Davines Strong Hairspray delivers a fine mist of hairspray that “gives structure, endures humidity, can be worked after application, dries out quickly, and is easy to remove.” The product is paraben free with no added colourings; it also gives extra “moisture” and “bounce.” My own experience with this hairspray has been a bit of a journey. I was not to happy with it at first even though I knew it was a more environmentally-friendly hairspray then the one I had been using. But it grew on me. I learned not to apply a lot like you do with many other hairsprays. A few sprays about 30 cm from your head will do the trick. What I like I about it is that despite the fact that it is a strong holding hairspray it is pretty easy to rework the hairspray if you change your mind and want to do a different hairstyle or redo your hair on the second day. Ultimately, I ended up being very happy with the product. I am almost out and will buy it again. Usually, I go with a more flexible hairspray but Davines allowed me to use it as a hairspray that was flexible and as a final spray to keep my hair in place. They do have a flexible hold hairspray if this is not a flexible enough hairspray for you. This hairspray has lasted me about nine months so it not something you are going to have to be purchasing often.

Davines Moose
http://www.us.davines.com Davines Medium Hold Moose

2. Davines Volume Boosting Moose  (www.us.davines.com) – $26.00 – This moose is a volume boosting moose with the texture of “snow.” It is compact and light to the touch with a medium hold. You apply it to damp, towel dried hair and it and all Davines products are Carbon – neutral/ Zero Impact products to the environment. This is one of the best mooses I have used. I find I need something to make my hair have volume or my long length and large amount of hair weigh my hair itdown and it sits on my head flat and straight. I have been using this moose for several months now and I am impressed by how long it lasts. The container lasts about three or four months. I have long hair but I don’t find I have to spray a large amount of form to keep putting in my hair. One palm full is fine and my hair is good to go for blow drying. The only bad aspect of this moose is that if you want to leave your hair to dry without a blow dryer it doesn’t work that well. Your hair doesn’t looking nice if you leave it to air dry with this moose. However, it does seem to work well when I attempt to curl my hair giving my curls more hold then other mooses have.

Davines Sea Salt Spray
http://www.us.davines.com Davines Sea Salt Spray

3. Daven’s Award Winning Sea Salt Spray (www.us.davens.com) – $27.00 – This product is a styling spray that gives the hair “fullness” and “body” with a matte finish.  It gives “texture, extreme volume, light control, a dry effect – tousled and beach like waves, and body minimizing the electrostatic effect.” It is a paraben free product with no added color. You can spray the sea salt spray into wet hair to increase the body or spray it into dry hair to increase the volume and give a matte effect. I bought a travel size version of this product to give my hair exactly what it is says “volume” and “body” but I haven’t been pleased with the results. I thought I was using the product incorrectly so I asked my hair stylist how to use it and she says the best way to use it is to apply it to damp hair and let your hair dry without a blow dryer. I tried that several times and while it did give a beach-like wave it looked like I left my hair to dry wet and that I just hadn’t bothered to do it. It doesn’t work for me well even if I blow dry my hair after using it. My hair ends up fuzzy, dry, and flat because of the salt which can dry hair out. So, perhaps, this would work for people with thinner hair or hair that is less fine then mine. Altogether, was not a fan of this product.

Unite Spray Conditioner 7 seconds
http://www.shop.unitehair.com Unite 7 Second Spray in Conditioner and Thermal Heat Protector

4.Unite 7 Second Spray in Conditioner and Hair Protectant – (www.shop.unitehair.com) – $32.00 for 8 0z.-  I love this product. It smells wonderful and it works great. Within 7 seconds my tangled hair is easy to comb out after my shower. Your hair is nourished by protein and mostirizures after using Unite. It is also a UV and thermal protectant. The product also “locks” in col0r; repairs, protects and strengthens hair; and is free of parabens and sodium chloride. All you have to do is towel dry your hair and spray “4 to 6 times” in your and then you can put in your other styling products. I can’t say enough about this product it is one of my all time favourite products and I would highly recommend  it to anyone whose wants a thermal protectant and also needs a bit of moisture in their hair, especially in Winter.

Unite texturize spray
http://www.shop.unitehair.com Unite Texturiza Spray

5. Unite Texturiza Spray – Dry Finishing – (www.shop.unitehair.com) – $35.00 – I actually came upon this product on my own. I knew I needed a good texturizing spray for some of the updos I try to do from Kate at The Small Things Blog so when I picked up some of the 7 second Conditioning Spray I tried this texturizer and I am thrilled with it. This spray adds “texture, volume, and fullness” to dry hair. It is a dry translucent finishing spray and will add “unbelievable” volume and texture all day and night. It has a medium workable hold. An example of when I use this spray is when I want to achieve an undone bun in my hair. I tease my upper-crown with Bedhead Rockaholic Dry Shampoo and then spray the rest of my hair with the Unite texturizer. Automatically, my hair becomes bigger and poofier and I have great texture to pick my hair up from the sides and twist it into a messy bun. Or I spray some in my hair before I braid it to give my hair texture so the braid sticks together as I braid it. It is very much preferable to me then a texturizing powder. Although your hair feels like it has texture on it it’s not an awful amount compared to the texturizing powder which leaves your hair feeling gross. Pretty much any hairstyle where you want some lift in your roots, this is a great product for. I highly recommend it.

Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo
http://www.biova.net Bed Head Rockaholic Dry Shampoo

Also, just a short blip about the Rockaholic Dry Shampoo. If you are like me and have trouble getting your hair to stay volumized at the crown a good salon brand Dry Shampoo is great to tease your hair with  until it gets that bump in the back. I have been using it forever now and it’s about $25.00 to $30.00 Canadian and can be found online (www.ulta.com) or at most salons. I didn’t want to do a separate blurb on it as I already talked about it when I compared dry shampoos awhile back. Look in my beauty blogs for that particular blog.

Living Proof 5 in 1 Styling Treatment
http://www.sephora.ca Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5 in 1 Styling Treatment

Another product I use when I get samples is a 5 in 1 hair styling product from Living Proof. It is fantastic to use if you just want to leave your hair down and want it to look healthy, have volume, and sit nice on your head. It is great but I also have blogged about it and it can be found at Sephora for $32.00 Canadian. I would use this more often but such as all Living Proof products they work wonderful but the price for a small bottle that doesn’t last long keeps me from committing to it.

Lastly here are some great hair videos from The Small Things Blog so you can do a few things with your new hair products.

Flash Fiction For Aspiring Writers – The Castle Falls

The walls of the castle were impenetrable, or so they thought. Kate was wearing the armour of one of the guards she found dead. She was ready to attack anyone who might steal her away.

The year was 1493 and another vassal had attacked her father when he had refused to cede to him. Kate’s father, Edward, was a proud but good man and it had long been known that he held the biggest slice of the King’s land and had the biggest army.

The other vassal Henry, had longed for Edwards land, army, fortune, and daughter. But Edward had refused knowing the terrible reputation Henry had, but they had underestimated him.

Kate hid amongst the shadows and when Henry came tramping into the castle to her bedroom she shot him through the heart, then escaped out the tunnels that only her family knew about. She met her father badly injured on the way. “We go to your cousin James’ stronghold” he rasped “there will be justice.”

The Gala on a Rainy Sheer Night

Challenge 3: 1st Picture – tell me about it! See below story for picture! Stream-of-consciousness…

The rain soaked my slender boots as I ran. It had been pouring and drizzling all day, tears from God, my mother would’ve said. The sky was a dense grey mass and thunder rumbled just as wheels on a gravel truck in the distance. Flashes of lightening spontaneously illuminated the sky, one so close my best friend and I jumped as the crackle of thunder with lightening caught us off guard.

I hadn’t been planning to go out that night, even though the gala was very close to my condo. I had planned on staying in to watch a movie with my roommate Kate and eating loads of divine buttery popcorn that we would make ourselves. I could taste the velvet of the butter and tang of the salt as I ran. Then water ran into my mouth dripping down my face and probably ruining my beautifully and carefully applied makeup. Thank goodness for waterproof mascara and long wear foundation.

As I ran, I dealt with the long silky cream skirt on my dress and held an umbrella above my hair so as not to ruin my carefully coiffed up-do. I had figured that an up-do would be a better option than curling my long dark brown hair for the Caratis Foundation Gala that night. My fiancée Skyler had wanted me to go. He had said something about it being good publicity for his work and an excellent chance to network for me — not to forget the hundreds of children the hospital’s yearly event saved.

The event was formal with tails and long evening gowns. But I shuddered to think how I would look once the rain had finished with me. Why didn’t I take a cab, I wondered? But the hotel Grande Parisian that this event was at was 5 blocks from where I lived in an old neighbourhood where many well established and successful ” rich” businesses held offices. It was in this neighbourhood I met Skyler coming home from work one day from the train 10 blocks away. We had been inseparable ever since, but he could be a bit of a spoiled rich kid at times.

Skyler was probably asking where I was now. I felt my smartphone ring in my clutch. Ah, there he was. He didn’t like going to these things alone it made him feel vulnerable, although he’d never admit it. He felt more comfortable with me, a friend, or business acquaintance there to lighten the expectations he felt imposed on him by others to meet and greet them.

Well, he wasn’t going to like how I looked when I arrived. Water had sloshed all over my silk skirt. Luckily I had chosen to wear boots and change into my cream colored stilettos, my toes wouldn’t have been able to handle the cold water puddling or the run. My feet were freezing as it was. The umbrella I held above my head helped so little when the rain came at you in all directions and my trench coat was soaked through to my silk gown.

I finally reached the Parisian and called Skyler to meet me at the door. He quickly encouraged me to go make myself presentable in the washroom. I hung up my coat and umbrella first and not paying attention to anything but my hair and makeup managed to salvage them and put on my stilettos. My gown was strangely cold and sticky but I ignored the uncomfortable feeling.

I ran out to meet Skyler at our table barely noticing the looks of passerbys, especially men, as I jogged as best I could in 4 ” heels. When I reached the dining area I heard a bunch of women gasp and I felt extremely self- conscious as I walked by several tables as people turned to stare.

When I reached Skyler he was deep in conversation with some guy I recognized from his work at the table. He brushed my back as I sat down then looked at me. ” Kyla your cold, wet, and . . . ” Skyler’s gaze dropped to my chest, then back to my face, then back to my chest. In fact, the whole table was staring at my chest.

It was then I looked down and saw the embarrassing and awful state of my undress. The off-white thick strapped and thinly fabriced silk chest of my dress was entirely see-through. I was small chested enough that I could get away without wearing a bra if need be. I had to with this dress usually, the deep V of the neck went quite low. But tonight the gown was see-through, wet, and still see-through when I looked again. I was cold and the sticky clingyness of the gown was all over, not just at the bottom of the dress where it didn’t matter. You could see my nipples and the outline of each of my boobs. If you looked low enough you could see the little lace nude boy shorts I wore on my bottom.

I gasped and went red. Everyone was frozen waiting for me to say or do something but an old man interrupted my impending speech. ” Kyla is it? Boy, I tell you Kyla, they don’t make tits like yours very often, not since I was in the Navy . . . They don’t have pretty girls like you at gala’s like this one often either. I think I’m going to like this gala.” Everyone around the table tittered. ” Skyler” said the old man, ” be a gentlemen and hand the lady your suit coat before I do.” There was more laughter and I could tell the mood at the table had relaxed.

Skyler went red having been caught staring at my chest and drooling. He smirked at me, shrugged, and gave me his suit jacket. “I like your dress,” he murmurs to me finally. I roll my eyes and dinner and the gala turned out to be okay after all.

Late Night Wanderings

I think I’m asleep now, maybe in a moment. Okay now I’m asleep. Okay not yet. Perhaps now. No not yet. I think I’ll try some more melatonin. That ought to do it. If I dissolve them underneath my tongue there is a much greater chance I’ll drift off to sleep . . .

Okay still not asleep. I guess I didn’t dissolve the melatonin properly in my mouth. Should I try a few more tablets?

Hey, I wonder how I should get my hair done tomorrow? Definitely going for the dark brown lowlights and I think the haircut from that picture of the blond on Pinterest. But longer then hers. I have to keep it long enough so I can put it up in a bun or chignon or braid it how I like. Speaking of which Kate hasn’t had very many new hair tutorials lately on her blog? I’d like to learn some new ways to do my hair but ever since her babies she just mostly talks about her baby David and the one in her tummy. I guess babies keep you extremely busy, never mind the lack of sleep . . .

Still not asleep! I wonder if I just shut my eyes and make myself sleep maybe it will happen. Too much napping this afternoon. But I was very sleepy around 5 pm. Okay, not asleep, did I take my sleeping pills, all of them? No maybe, I missed a couple. But tell the doctor that and they bubble pack your Meds like your elderly and living in the home.

I wonder what kind of picture I’ll need to take tomorrow? Maybe I should check now since I’ll be out. Hair then flu shot and drugstore. Last time I got a needle the pharmacist made me bleed. That was weird, I didn’t think needles did that except for blood tests.

NOT SLEEPING! Okay definitely didn’t take a couple sleeping pills. 200 mg Gabepentin stat!

Three minutes later . . .
