Day 2 – NaPoWriMo/A to Z Challenge: Poem – Tankas – “Recipes and Baking” #amwriting #poetry #NaPoWriMo #AtoZchallenge

Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt is a poem inspired by, or in the form of, a recipe! It can be a recipe for something real, like your grandmother’s lemon chiffon cake, or for something imaginary, like a love potion or a spell. The quote was is by Bob Spitz for B about Julia Child’sand her  cooking for the A to Z Challenge.

“The cooking was invigorating, joyous. For Julia, the cooking fulfilled the promises that Le Cordon Bleu had made but never kept. Where Le Cordon Bleu always remained rooted in the dogma of French cuisine, Julia strove to infuse its rigors with new possibilities and pleasures. It must have felt liberating for her to deconstruct Carême and Escoffier, respecting the traditions and technique while correcting the oversight. “To her,” as a noted food writer indicated, “French culinary tradition was a frontier, not a religion.” If a legendary recipe could be improved upon, then let the gods beware.”

Beauty Haul Winter 2016/2017: Part Two

Good Morning! I’ve been meaning to do this post for awhile as part one was done before Christmas. I have an interesting selection of beauty products since the Fall Beauty Haul and I hope you find this post useful in your own Beauty Product selection.

1. Make Up Forever Excessive Lash Arresting Volume Mascara – (www.sephora.ca) – $31.00 CAN

img_2965-1
Make Up Forever Excessive Lash Arresting Volume Mascara (0.15 oz) – $31.00 CAN – http://www.sephora.ca

I received this mascara as a sample from Sephora. I adore Make Up Forever products in general so I was excited to try another of their mascaras. As usual, since my mascara never stays on my lashes unless the mascara is waterproof, I put on a coat of a waterproof L’Oreal mascara after applying the sample mascara. I like this Make Up Forever mascara, it’s quite black and the brush does a good job of creating volume for your lashes, but I’m not thrilled by this mascara. It’s a middle-of-the-line mascara and I think if you bought it you would like it, but not be overly impressed. There isn’t a wow factor to it. Honestly, there is not much difference between The Make Up Forever Excessive Lash Mascara and the L’Oreal one I put over top. The brush is the same, the opacity of the mascara the same,  and the only difference is the L’Oreal mascara is waterproof. I’d say this rates about a three out of five stars for a mascara.

2. Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil – (www.sephora.ca)- $29.00 – Two Pencils: One in Stingray (Jet Black) and Lion Fish (Deep Bronze Sheen)

winter-2017-lion-fish-eyeliner-stila
Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner (Pencil) This one one Lion Fish – (www.sephora.ca)- 0.28 g – $29.00 CAN

For the longest time, I always used pencil liners because they were easier to apply than the liquid ones I tried; however, then companies such as Lancome led the way coming out with liquid eyeliners which were easy to apply, they had great foam tipped applicators. I have especially used waterproof eyeliner since makeup brands such as Stila and well everyone else, has come out with wonderful liquid eyeliners which are like fine-tip markers for the eyes (pens). Once you learn to apply these awesome liquid eyeliners, they are usually much more vibrant and remain on your eye better than pencil eyeliners.

Nonetheless, during the Christmas season, I was searching for my trusty Stila liquid eyeliner pen in black and Sephora didn’t have any left except in a Christmas Gift Set that was $44.00 CAN and included Jet Black and Lion Fish eyeliner pencils as well. These eyeliner pencils aren’t’ exactly pencils such as the ones you sharpen. Instead, they’re roll-up, which means the tip remains small and pointed. I love them so much as everyday makeup products, enough to permanently add Jet Black pencil liner to my regular makeup purchases when it runs out.

The reason I love these roll-up pencils so much is that they are similar to smudge pot eyeshadows. They glide onto your eye line smoothly and they leave behind pigmented and rich color which is also waterproof, so it doesn’t rub off as many pencil eyeliners do. They are excellent eyeliners especially if you have trouble lining in your upper water line. The roll-up pencils do a fantastic job coloring in waterlines when you need, and remaining on your waterline, which is an extremely difficult feat for a makeup brand to accomplish.

I love Stila’s Jet Black for use on my waterline and sometimes for regular eyeliner. Lion Fish is a bronzy color which is a great change up for a daytime look from using a black liner. Lion Fish also has a bit of shimmer in it instead of being merely being a matte brown liner.

This gift set was completely worth the purchase for $44.oo because I received both these pencil liners and my black liquid eyeliner pen, a cost of about $96.00 regular price before tax. A definite five out of five stars for the Stila Smudge Sticks.

3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Metallic Luster Liner in Liquid Gold – (www.sephora.ca) – $23.00 CAN

winter-2017-anastasia-gold-liner
Anastasia Beverly Hills Metallic Lustre Liner in Liqiuid Gold – (www.sephora.ca) – 0.04 oz – $23.00 CAN

I cannot say Stila is the only pencil eyeliner I was recently impressed with. I had seen that gold eyeliner was a trend for the holiday season. Watching a Pixie Woo’s makeup tutorial on YouTube, I loved how the one Pixie Woo used this Anastasia eyeliner to line her lower waterline and corner of her eyes, it looked fantastic.

But the Anastasia Luster Liner in Liquid Gold was extremely versatile and is a  product and I think I will buy again. It works great on waterlines and the liner stays on with a couple of coats, and it appears beautifully on top of black eyeliner as a bit of a fancy touch. But my most favorite use for this eyeliner pencil was using it on Christmas and New years to fill in my entire eyelid area, then blend it out with other eyeshadow.

I had to be careful doing this as once this waterproof liner sets it remains put. It`s not moving except with eye makeup remover. So if you use the Anastasia liquid gold eyeliner this way, put on most of your eyeshadow before applying the gold liner on your lid. It does take a while to blend other eyeshadow colors into the gold eye pencil if you choose to use it this way. I loved this festive product and think it could be used for special occasions or if you want to add a bit of glimmer to your daytime look in the corner or your eye or your bottom waterline for instance.

I used most of the pencil up over two-months and only have a bit left, but it`s not a product too high priced to purchase again. I`m impressed with how well it works for multiple looks for a waterproof gold eyeliner with such bold and vivid gold color, and not a yellowy gold shade (if you know what I mean). The Anastasia eyeliner also comes in the color Liquid Silver. It was easy to sharpen and it never broke even though the pencil was soft and the color bright.I would give this eyeliner pencil five stars.

4. Origins: High Potency Night-A-Mins™ Mineral-Enriched Renewal Cream – (www.sephora.ca) – $55.00 (1.7 oz/50 ml)

winter-2017-orgins-high-potency-night-a-mins-mineral-cream
Origins High-Potency Night -A -Mins Mineral-Enriched Renewal Cream – (www.sephora.ca) – 1.7 oz/50 ml – $55.00 CAN

So it’s Winter which means for many of us in colder climates, we are experiencing dryer skin. I usually have skin oily enough that it doesn’t seem to require much extra moisture, expect maybe applying my Clinique moisturizing gel twice every few days. This year I had a bit a different experience and found at night, I required a solid moisturizer but one that would not cause me to break out. So I used some of my Sephora points and received a large sized sample of the Origins Night cream and it lasted about a month, so I think the product itself even though it’s $55.00 for the smaller size, would last a person the entire winter.

I had tried eye creams and other one or two day samples from Origins and I have always liked their products and how my skin reacts to them. They are great to moisturize dry skin and even though it was a night cream, I did use it in the day sometimes. It felt wonderful and smelled great. As well, I like that the cream is made out of plant minerals. I have always found these type ingredients to be fantastic indicators of a quality cream/lotion/or gel. I completely recommend this product for dry skin, especially at night. I would give the Origins Night Cream four our of five stars. I can use this in the winter, but not in the summer or spring when the weather seems to indicate I need less moisturizer.

5. NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil  (Eye Shadow)- 611 Yogurt – (www.ulta.com) – $4.49 US ($6 or $7 CAN at Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada)

winter-2017-nyx-eye-pencil
NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil (Eye Shadow) in 611 Yogurt – (www.ulta.com) – 0.18 oz – $4.49

I’ve heard good things about NYX as a cheaper makeup brand. I adore their matte setting spray for makeup so I thought I would try something else from their line. I wanted a base color that I can put on before my other eyeshadow, which is the reason I bought this pencil.

Unfortunately, I bought the wrong shade, it’s a bit too yellow for me and I should have bought a similar shade with more pink in it. But it’s not bad for a shimmery base color and I’ve worn it a few times. The only problem is, I’ve worn the eye pencil down and would think you could sharpen it, but I do not own a sharpener which can fit the jumbo pencil in.

The eye pencil color stays on your eyelids well and doesn’t come off easily. You can blend other eyeshadows of various types into it as well, and the color is easy to cover up if you don’t like the shade but are using it as a base.

I’m not sure where to find a sharpener which fits the NYX jumbo pencil, or if it even can be sharpened? If you know let me know. I think as with most products in the makeup industry, you get what you pay for and the NYX jumbo eyeshadow pencil is an example of this with only a two-star rating.

6. The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Balm With Calming Camomile Extract – Sensitive Skin – MakeUp Remover – (www.thebodyshop.ca) – $16.00 CAN

winter-2017-camomile-sumptuous-cleansing-butter_l
The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Balm With Calming Camomile Extract for Sensitive Skin – (www.thebodyshop.ca) – 90 ml – $16.00

My last product to share was part of a gift from a friend with many lovely Body Shop Products. They definantly have some nice products and not only lotion and body wash. I was really thrilled with this cleansing balm I received. I wasn’t sure what it was at first.

But, it’s an awesome makeup remover and is also extremely moisturizing at the same time. I have doubts about using it in spring and summer, but right now it’s exactly what my skin needed. I usually use cleansing clothes to remove my makeup and right now I use both. I put the balm all over my face with my hands, including my eyes — it’s awesome at removing any and all eye makeup especially waterproof makeup. The balm feels as if it might be a bit greasy, but it’s not at all. It cleanses your face completely of makeup and works well with the cleansing clothes you can throw away.

The cleansing balm leaves your fast moisturized and feeling great, not to mention, it smells fantastic. If you can get your hands on some I recommend it. Four stars our of five.

If you haven’t read Part 1 of my Beauty Haul it was in December and can be found HERE.

Poem: ” Not in the Moment.”

A midnight Christmas poem, to settle you to sleep after turkey dinners and children’s dreams. (A picture of a beach to encourage your own.)

At an hour the moon is magnificently full and round and never will be again for many years. Describe your perfect moment. (Can you see that beach?)

Describe now, what you want to accomplish in the coming year, pass your festive cheer and go on to new beginnings. (In Hawaii?)

Or, go a little easy on the nog or “special” punch so you can think in a half sensical state about what you would like your life to be as you persevere through the night.

You might never change a thing; your life could be exactly how it is in the moment you’re enjoying. Or maybe you would like to experience some changes … (In the surf on a sandy beach walking through tiny waves that lap at your feet.)

Life is full of the good and bad. And no time like Christmas to reflect, the bad ain’t so bad. We are all blessed in this respect.

To have a home, a life, a family, food to eat that is even sweet, and food that is healthful, the wine in your glass, the dog in your lap, and the child who is playing with his toy’s box. (To picture a warm place and learn how to surf…)

Life is pretty sweet but there is room to improve for everyone. I don’t mean to push. I don’t mean to shove. But I am looking ahead with a nod over my shoulder (– is that a shark in the water?)

I’m stuck in the midnight glower of a lamp light, composing poems on the night of Christmas, but I guess Christmas is no more soon. (But I still see a Hawaiin sunset…)

Soon we approach a New Year. Soon we say goodbye to 2015. Soon we drink champagne and dance the night away. Soon we have philosophical conversations at 3:00 am with the next holiday party. (Or sit calmly in a lovely cottage near the ocean?)

But stay, here in Christmas time and the birth of ‘Immanuel.’ Stay for a moment in the serenity of the night and swallow your last bit of nog or punch.( Beach …)

Think of your bubble, the charity and love. Despair of the relatives who won’t leave and the mess to clean. Pour another glass. Glug! Glug! Glug!

Midnight is passing and it means that I must sleep leaving you with merely a thought. What do you want in the coming year?

Beyond Boxing Day shopping. Beyond all the presents received. Beyond all the company. Beyond all the food and the drinks. Beyond the festivity, what more could there be. (A sunny warm place where you can lie on the beach.)

But there is always more and that’s the thing; we have so much and these little moments become precious memories that help us through the new when we look ahead and face problems and deficiencies.

Time passes on and the grand moon shines. A blaring light at my window and it is bright in the snow, calling to me softly. Where will you go?

That challenge I suppose waits for days to come in the passing of the year; for now still be of good cheer. Sleep soon. Hangovers get worse each year. (Hawaii is near.)

Poem: ” Wishful Thinking.”

Some celebrate the season with their loved —

Ones, Some celebrate with their dogs and cats.

Others seek solace in a church and they pray and they —

Sing, of a child born Christmas Day and they,

Remember that child died on a cross when–

He became a man and preached to the poor.

He healed the blind and the lame and he even,

Let Pharisees accuse Him of crimes he never,

Committed because he knew there was more,

Meaning in his death; as there was such joy,

At his birth. Where wisemen followed a star,

And Angels sang his glory, while his Young,

Mother Mary, treasured everything in,

Her heart and rejoiced that her baby would,

Save the human race and defeat death and,

The devil, so that we can all go to heaven.

And be free and eternal, finally perfect,

And praise God for that little baby forever.

But some don’t know that story, some only–

Know they have nothing to eat and that they,

Are spiritually weak because they can’t think,

Much beyond each day because they cannot,

See the light in the tunnel, they are suffering.

And thinking to far in advance would make,

Their eyes tear up with sorrows and they can’t,

Be weak if they are to survive the pain.

Some people are alone having lost their loved,

Ones, or they are living far away while,

Their family lives somewhere else and I hurt,

For the people who can’t celebrate with–

Utmost Joy, the birth of a Saviour and have,

The blessing of their family to support them.

It is Christmas time and as much as we,

Are all together, some people are close,

To falling apart because they cannot,

Be happy at Christmas, they have lost their,

Holiday cheer because bad things happen,

At Christmas too and it’s hard to be full–

Of joy, when you are hurting more then is,

Obvious to other people even;

Though you wish you could be a person,

With only thoughts of laughter and cheer.

MishMash December

Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope it hasn’t been a hard start for those of you coming back from Thanksgiving holidays. Last week I had two things to do: Christmas shop online and study for my Residential Furnishing’s Final. I’m happy to say I wrote the final today and although the essay part I found difficult to do, I think I put enough examples and information on Early Moderan furnishings that I formed a good enough essay. I hope so anyways. I received my proposal back and got an A- on that and have an A- on the midterm, so I just need to keep my mark at an A- and I’ll be happy. It would help with some of other courses where I was only able to earn a B-. But it is exciting because my Residential Interiors Certificate is finished and I receive it in June 2017. It’s good to feel a sense of completion, that I was able to accomplish something even though throughout these almost eight years I have been too sick to work. I am still looking into some kind of writing course for the Winter term or Spring term. Now that I have more time tomorrow I can look into what kind of course and from where I want to take it.

My Christmas shopping online was a success, sort of. . . In fact, the only thing I wasn’t able to buy were some clothing I wanted from Banana Republic. But I think I will save that for next pay cheque. Honestly, for the items I had to buy I didn’t find I received that great of a deal. Purdy’s (the chocolate store) had free standard shipping. Indigo books had the best deals. I got three throws for various relatives on sale for $22.50 each and assorted nice looking gift bags all for $2 to $3. They also had an extra 10% off you paid by Visa. As well,  I bought some gift cards and those of course have no money off because they are like cash. I shopped at Lush online but no discount there. Sephora did have some great holiday deals for different sets. I got a Bliss set with hand lotion, body butter, and shower gel for $18.00. The part that was the deal was a ton of free samples from various makeup and skincare lines. Also, they had $13.00 gift sets on Black Friday but none I liked. I really wanted this eyeshadow palett from Tarte but the 25% discount Tarte was offering didn’t apply to their holiday sets. So basically I’m done the shopping part except for some wine from DeVine wines downtown for Christmas Eve, me, and my God Parents. Then I just have to make all the presents look pretty around Christmas time.

I went to a show at the Expo Center in Edmonton; it was called “Make It Edmonton.” The is all about buying local handmade items that various vendors are selling, that have to be of a certain quality. The show goes is in Vancouver too. I picked up some wine tags and a couple of bamboo screened t-shirts with birds on them. They were cute and there were some bamboo scarves with a screened bird images on them that were also nice in several colors. I liked a couple vendors who made silk scarves and dyed them by hand. There was so much beautiful jewelry. A lot of it was simple but I liked this pearl and crystal necklace made out of a piece of an old clock. There were also some yummy chocolate Ganache cupcakes and some gluten free cookies for my Dad. Many of the vendors at “Make It” you might see on Etsy. I am going to the butterdome craft show next Saturday with my Mom and I don’t know how different it will be. Usually, it’s a bit more crafty and has a bit more varied items. Think more wood carving and wool mittens.

Anyway, I came home after my exam today and I felt as if I wanted to clean and tidy things up. I don’t often feel this way so I figured I better act on the feeling. I put all my interior design materials away from my course and cleaned up in the living room where I study. Then I noticed that my room was dusty so I thoroughly cleaned a dresser and one section of my room from expired or barely used beauty products, dust, and clothing that is going to Good Will. I’ll finish off some more cleaning  tomorrow. Cleaning away the old makes me feel as if everything is ready for brand new life events and the holiday season.

In addition,  what came out of my cleaning up are some new beauty blogging ideas over the next few weeks. First, I don’t think I’ve ever done a blog (except on dry shampoo) on my favourite hair products and brands and why I use these particular ones. I also want to link that with The Small Things Blog and include some of Kate’s (the blogger) more recent hair tutorials that I have been doing. So you’ll have access to those YouTube videos. Also, I wanted to share a video on my skincare routine. It’s extremely important to take care of your skin and I am going to share with you the products from Clinique and else where that have worked for me, some since high school and some more recently.Lastly, I have a beauty blog to do on a mishmash of products I have received as larger samples in my Luxebox’s or that I have bought that don’t fit into a particular catagory of beauty products. So, three beauty posts ahead.

Addotionally, I can’t stop being excited about our football league this year, the CFL, and my home team the Edmonton Eskimos who won the Grey Cup (named for the Earl of Grey one-hundred-and-three years ago. He’s also the same earl who earl grey tea is named after). The Grey Cup was Sunday in Winnipeg. The weather was decent. Some years they play in -30 degree Celsius weather outside. But November has been beautiful in Canada. I watched football while I studied and drank red wine to celebrate as we narrowly defeated the Ottawa RedBlacks. It’s also great because my Dad is a Saskatchewan Roughrider’s fan who will cheer for any team but my Eskimos. We beat his team and the team he cheered for at the Grey Cup so that is always a plus.

I know many of you are probably like: “Canada has a football league and it isn’t the NFL?” Yes, we most certainly do and the same way you get many Canadian hockey players in the US, we get football players from some of your universities in the US to come play in our league. Many of our players are Canadian or American and are extremely talented, they have just chosen to play in the CFL out of love. But we also get players who don’t make it on NFL teams or players who are training themselves to be better so they can go on to play in the NFL. Doing this as a player can work but doesn’t always. The biggest difference in the CFL is that we have three downs instead of four. So, what this means is in the CFL you have only three chances to move the football ten yards before the other team gets the ball. There are some other differences too I think some differences with the yardage on the field and number of players but I haven’t looked into it lately. Anyways, enjoy your NFL, many of my friends are in a pool trying to get the most wins from the teams they picked. Let’s just say there is a player with the last name Eifert, and that’s not a common name in Canada or the US, so whatever team he is on, I want my cousin (of however many times) to win.

To end, I will mention that I will as always have other blog topics besides beauty. I am doing a Writing 101 poetry course on WordPress and I’ll just see what happens from there.

Thanks for reading!

And This Week Brings . . .

It’s the beginning of another week and only 1 and 1/2 weeks until Christmas? Are you ready are you prepared? I look forward to

www.parkthatcar.net
http://www.parkthatcar.net

spending the time with my family, yet another part of me is a bit loathe to give up having the house to myself. I like getting up late and just lounging before getting to work on whatever I have going that day. Things change when the house is full. But by the time Christmas vacation is done I will sad that everyone has gone back to their jobs and school.

There is bitter sweet news for me. I was crunching the numbers and after Christmas expenses I think I will have to wait on my beautiful tattoo. I think I’ll have to wait until spring. So I have canceled my consultation and said I will re-book with the same artist (who does the watercolor affect well) in March or April. I just feel a bit more comfortable with that considering an hour is around $160.00 plus a materials fee. For the 3 or 4 guesstimated hours I think I will save up a bit first. But I look forward to having those lovely flowers on my lower back soon.

Well, my mom’s new furniture finally arrived so we will have a nice new living room for Christmas guests. Now it is time to pull out the Christmas decorations. I swear we never get everything out until this time in December and my mom is not off until December 23. So I’m thinking I will be doing some decorating this week and baking some gingerbread type spice cookies. You bake them and then ice them and throw some sprinkles on if you want. It’s a two day job but worth it. I’m not sure who is going to eat them all but I can always send them home with my brothers I think.

www.pureavidawestlake.com
http://www.pureavidawestlake.com

Also, looking forward to a spa day on Tuesday afternoon. There are some great spa deals to be found this time of year and one of the little spas I have tried out through Groupon  and actually gone back to a few times is having a special: a manicure, pedicure, and facial for $35,00. This is an absolutely fantastic deal, plus the spa is great! It’s decor is modern and classy, all black, white, and crystal beads. Then on Thursday I get to have my hair done at it’s sister salon where I have some Groupon’s at. I think I am going for some dark low lights in my usually blond-blond mane. That is my natural color but it will be fun to have something a bit different. Not doing much with a haircut though – just a trim on my layers and some texturizing. I want to keep it long since I have learned how to do my hair both updos and long hair.

Today I mastered my new Babybliss Miracurl and got perfect curls out of it even in the back of my hair. For my hair the key is to hold it for 20-25 seconds on a higher heat. It just needs the extra time and heat to curl. I put it half up in this really easy hairdo and it looked good. I’m impressed I can actually do my hair now.

On the downside a new sleeping medication has pretty much eliminated the weight I lost last year on herbal magic. So even though it’s Christmas I am cutting back. No Pepsi after today and measuring my food out again carefully. It’s sad I have to do it but it actually works and if it keeps you at a healthier weight then it is worth the sacrifice.

That’s it for this week now. I will try to come up with a more interesting blog for later this week, something on some topic or another.

Take care
