“Alice, is that you? Well, what door will you enter, the red door or the blue? The up or the down; it doesn’t matter you know, both are the same.” She fluffed her pony tale and straightened the lapels of her sky-blue blazer.

“Can’t Wonderland find another Alice? It’s a common name, you know. Just because my grandmother was, and my mother was, and somehow great-Grandpa Wren’s magical blood flows in my veins along with the first, Alice — doesn’t mean I have to follow in their footsteps. I left that world. I chose to leave. Why won’t you let me be?”

A grin appeared between the doors. “Dear girl, it’s you who can’t forget us; you found the doors home. That’s why you’re our guardian, but you as any Alice, must choose your path. Thus, you have before you two doors. Which door, dear Alice? You do have to decide. Time won’t wait.”

Alice trembled, and without thinking her hand turned the knob on the red door. Then, she was falling as the Cheshire cat laughed and Destiny caught up with Alice.

She’d tried to disappear, to become another young woman. But as her predecessors, including her dear mother, she was a guardian of Wonderland. The land of magic wouldn’t have it another way. She fell, and when she woke up, she sighed as brilliant flowers hovered over her whispering.

They beamed at her, brimming with questions. “Oh, Alice is it true? Have you come home. You’re the new guardian now, and your mother been waiting; her time is at an end. Five-hundred years is a long time not too see one’s daughter. Your time to serve has come. The white queen has decreed, as do your grandfather Wren’s people.”

Alice blew her hair from her face. “What’s the point of free will if your choices all lead you back to one path?”

The flowers shrugged. “Tulips and Marigolds don’t think of such things; we simply are.”

Hungry! Need food. Opening the fridge door I notice the shelves are empty. I sigh agitated, but leave my apartment, renting one of the bicycles nearby. I’ve half of a grocery list on my phone at least.

Walking inside the store I wrench on a cart out and begin shopping for fruit.  I mutter to myself checking off the items on my grocery list and adding others.

“Ouch,” I hear, “Nice aim.”

I gaze up from my phone. Crinkled azure eyes, mussed brown hair, and a killer smile greet me. I blush when I notice he’s checking me out, rubbing his injured shin.

He holds out his hand while standing up. “I’m Ryan. Nice to meet you.”

I shake his hand. “Sherise. Sorry, about your leg.”

“Oh, I’ll live,” he grins. “Do you want some company? I’ve just got to pay for the milk. Wait here.”

“You don’t have to, if you don’t want.”

A grin with crinkled eyes. “I want to.”

Five minutes later Ryan is back, pushing the cart. He makes jokes as I fill it with my grocery items. He insists on driving me home, placing my rented bike in the back of his SUV.

I smile now thinking back. That day had been the beginning of us.

Painfully stuck in airport for hours wait,

Sitting here staring the clock ticks slowly.

Here with you life’s perfect –it doesn’t grate.

My arm falls asleep, your heavy head rolls,

Further onto my chest; I need to get up.

Legs start to tingle, I’ve sat too long so —

I gently moving your head; my ‘buttercup,’

You hate when I call you that but you make me smile.

Happiness, tranquility; I’m drugged.

Departure board reads, plane is still awhile.

Walking for coffee, some lunch, magazines.

You’re awake when I return, you beguile;

Your grin makes you quiver and I preen.

Unaware we stare, our stare held timeless.

You appreciate me (and food); your eyes gleam.

We’re both stuck here all night, it’s liveable,

We both forge a tighter bond insurmountable.

Painfully stuck in airport for hours wait.

Here with you, life’s perfect — it doesn’t grate.

Sunday Photo Fiction: Awakening the Dragon #flashfiction #amwriting #dragon

——

Sophia hid in her closet, it was her only safe place. Hanging on a ceiling was a mobile with a handcrafted dragon. She remembered thinking the dragon was frightening, but whenever the darkness in her room swallowed her, the dragon’s eyes flashed; the shadows were obliterated.

She also remembered when her mom first hit her. She scrubbed Sophia’s cut and it was excruciating as was the burning stringent liquid her mom poured on it.

Suddenly, Sophia heard yelling and stomping. The closest door flew open — her mother was drunk again.
Instantly, the dragon’s eyes above her caught fire. He grew into a monster with golden scales and the scent of fire and ash, spreading and filling Sophia’s entire bedroom. He blew a blaze of fire at her mom but only the bottle of Kirkland Tequila (1.75 Litres/$20.00) in her mom’s hand disintegrated.

In words veiled in smoke the dragon hissed at Sophia’s mom who nodded; she understood the dragon’s warning. He breathed out his last plume of smoke and except for the acrid smell, it was if Sophie’s dragon had never awoken.

She crawled out of her hiding place and petted the handcrafted dragon hearing him purr.

#OctPoWriMo – Day 18 – Ottava Rima – “Nature’s Cradle” #amwriting #poetry

Day 19 Prompt: Tree

Trees are necessary for our very existence on this earth, they produce the air we breathe. We build houses with them and create many products that we use everyday with them. What personal role do trees have in your life? Do you have a favorite tree in your yard or one that you walk or drive by frequently? Free write for ten minutes exploring the world of trees.”

——

The park is peaceful silent, as mid-day sun strays,

Walking through foliage, even footsteps —

Can be heard, where branches carve a ceiling cave.

Though the sky is cheerful blue, branches yet,

Make the trails paved, a hollowed place away —

Screaming city lights, and loud conversation met,

With the quiet, the tranquil breath, gifted by trees,

No sadness here, a happy place held dear.

—–

The drifting leaves, paying tole, to dancing wind,

Blowing the rebirth of trees and their seeds far.

Slow lazy walk, furry dog smelling scents, grins.

Curious thing, to see a dog smile, laughing bark.

Nature cradles us, magic trees rekindled.

Hidden we are in treasured lands, our star —

Bright light always near, to show us the path to roam.

Nature’s dreamy pause, returns with us to home.

———

Feeling peace; in my life you’re a balm.

My body is calm;

Mouth softly turns,

Together we learn.

———

Gazing in your eyes, reflecting.

Smile love inflects.

Your eyes gleaming,

Both us we dream.

——-

Magnatism, hands entwining,

Thoughtless combine.

Despite small fights,

We talk; no flight.

——–

Sometimes you need your space, and I mine.

Eyes know our signs.

Always meet each —

Other; hands reach.

——–

A gaze, a grin, our language known,

We both intone,

Stories we share,

Affectionate, care.

——-

Knowing each other; intimacy.

Made intricately,

Life together,

Us forever.

Poem: Wrapped Refrain – “A Good Guy”

http://www.inspiredbythis.com

——

You’re a good guy, I want to spend,

My days smiling at time you lend,

From a busy schedule, life before —

I entered your picture, adore —

The way you spend time taking Grandma for groceries,

How you talk to her, bored but, showing pleasantries.

—-

You make me believe beyond my doubt,

That there are good men on love’s route.

That it’s alright to share my heart,

You won’t burn it and then depart,

You’ll understand it’s a gift freely given, a grace,

Something you’ll treasure when we’re together, embrace.

—–

I’ll believe in true love because in,

Or true life meet-cute, you’ll me win,

I’ll see your flaws apparent, grin.

Because I have many of those too let’s swim.

To oceans where the breeze plays in sand and surf waiting,

For us to walk through tides rushing in, both debating.

—-

The merits of some random item,

Verses some other thing enlighten,

Laying against your heart, hear beating,

The sound of safety completing,

No questions in my mind, though life together maybe hard,

We are two, in a partnership, sorting playing cards.

Life can be a serious game who wins?

Me or you? Important? Bigger things.

Letting you triumph because competition,

Fuels you, you’re happy — elation.

Sometimes I beat you; you get this look, how’d I do it?

I’m only a beginner; You have to remain with it.

—–

Only a mere test, see frustrated,

Wondering how I beat you jaded,

I’ll never tell but, next game yours,

Your counting, I’m not keeping score,

I’ve won you next to me at night, dreamers dreaming.

You’re a good guy; delight in me, lips close, us breathing.

Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner: Art in the Eye of the Beholder.

” So what do you think?” Paul asked his husband. “It’s a print of a famous painting and the ocean and sky is calm and relaxing. You don’t like it?”

Trevor looked at the print hung over their bed: “Paul, it’s a print. I think if you’re going to buy a copy of a painting, you should at least buy a copy which is actually painted. This is a poster, how much did you pay for it?” Paul smiled with strain.

“Oh, it was only a cheap print framed. Maybe, we can go find an actual painting soon. I only thought this was a serene piece of art perfect for a bedroom.” Paul said sounding hurt.

Trevor sighed deeply; he hated it when Paul made him feel guilty.

“The ocean and the sky are serene but we could go down Whyte Ave this week during Art Walk and find an original actual painting, while supporting local artists. I’m sure a peaceful ocean and sky will be a common theme.” Trevor remarked, trying to convince Paul’s high taste.

Paul grinned.”That sounds fantastic! There is this great restaurant where they have real Italian food on Whyte and…”

Trevor tuned Paul out and flicked on the TV opposite the ocean print. An NFL game was on; true art, Trevor thought with a grin.

Part 4: Never Again – New Love for Jolene.

Please read Part 3 of ‘Never Again’ here.

Part 4: Never Again – New Love for Jolene.

“Sorry do I know you?” A handsome man around her age asked Jolene.” You seem familiar. And well, you’re beautiful, who could forget you.” Jolene indulged the man with a smile. She was anxious to return to Kasia and Aunt Cathy. No doubt Auntie Cathy had spilled all of Jolene’s carefully guarded secrets to Kasia.

“I don’t believe we’ve met before,” Jolene told the man. “I’m only visiting Cathy Lumiere, with my daughter. I’m Cathy’s niece. I used to live with Cathy when I was in highschool.”

” High school that’s it,” the man mused smiling. He had beautiful lips Jolene thought and such long dark lashes covered his chocolate eyes. “You were the head cheerleader and Prom Queen, you dated Scott Jeune. I never liked that guy. He was obnoxious and a narsaccist if you ask me.” Jolene looked at the man thinking he didn’t realize how true his opinion of Scott was.

” What’s your name, Monsieur?” Jolene asked the man.

“I’m Luc Devreaux, Jolene. I own Chateau Blanc.” Jolene’s eyes went huge when she learned Luc owned the Chateau. She studied his face, staring. Jolene tried to remember if she’d ever seen a Luke Devreaux at the Chateau.

Luc cleared his throat and Jolene realized he’d been holding out his hand for her to shake. Instead of shaking her hand though, he went in for a kiss on each of Jolene’s cheeks. Jolene blushed. Luc smelt delicious, spicy, and citrus.

“How French of you,” Jolene said and Luke gave her a charming grin.

“You have been gone so long you have forgotten about your French roots?” Luc asked Jolene and she hesitated at Luc’s question.

“Well, I travel a lot for work. I wasn’t from Nice or even France originally. I was born in Montreal, Canada. And except for business I have lived in Ottawa with my daughter for five years now… I’m trying to picture you Luc as you looked when I was in highschool, but I can’t remember you. I’m sorry, I was a wild girl at sixteen and seventeen -years-old. I went out with many boys until I met Scott. Lucky, the thing with Scott was only temporary.” Jolene felt she was rambling but Luc made her nervous in a wonderful way. He made her feel as if it were fine for her to be herself.

“Well we went out a few weeks,” Luc began, “but I wasn’t living at the Chateau then. I inherited it from my father later. Mon pere and ma mere have been divorced since I was twelve and I lived with my Mother, who had custody until I was eighteen. But I visited my Dad here in the summer. I remember you well from when you went to high school. You were amazingly pretty, full of yourself, but what pretty teenage girl isn’t. I wanted to keep seeing you, but Scott asked you out. Even though, I was a few years older than you, all you cared about was Scott.” Luc said sadly.

Jolene thought hard. Slowly, a few threads of memories came together in her mind. She remembered a  handsome guy, older than herself, who resembled Luc. She had met young Luc on the path to Chateau from the beach where she had been sun tanning. Luc had been good-looking in a classically handsome way, lanky and athletic. He wasn’t charismatic as Scott had been. But Luc as a young man was an unwavering presence. He was thoughtful and concerned about what she had liked and wanted to do. He had manners and everything wasn’t about himself. In addition, as he said, Luc had been older than Jolene. She had been attracted to the fact he was a university guy back when she was seventeen-years-old.

” I remember you Luc,” Jolene said happily. “You were visiting your father and we met on the pathway. It was dark and thundering and the waves were splashing high on the path. They waves were making it hard for me to stay standing on the pathway as I ran to the Chateau. You came and helped me across and we had hot chocolate together. We dated three-weeks, you were caring and concerned. I thought you were a real catch — until Scott. I was obsessed with Scott for far to long. I’m sorry if I hurt you, dumping you for Scott. You were the better guy.” Luc laughed and grasped Jolene’s hand between both of his larger hands.

“I’m glad you remember, finally,” Luc murmured. “I heard from some of the other staff that Cathy’s niece was going to be staying here awhile. I’m glad you are. I seem to remember we had quite a bit of fun in my old apartment when you were in senior year.”

Jolene lifted her eyebrows, “I believe we did.” Luc laughed.

“When you have time between visiting with your Aunt, come see me in my office. We can catch up… I never heard you had a daughter.” Luc added.

Jolene grinned her hands still enclosed in Luc’s warm hands, ” Yeah, she is great, fifteen now. I will come see you in a few days. I’m a bit run down from travelling and I have a lot of explaining to do with Aunt Cathy. . . when I left years ago it was quite sudden and we haven’t seen Aunt Cathy since.” Jolene admitted to Luc, unsure why she felt like being so honest with him.

” I’m not used to this again Luc. I haven’t dated or really done anything since my daughter was born. There’s been a few random dates but nothing concrete. It’s hard to trust someone for me Luc. Especially, after Scott . . .” Luc nodded brushing a stray hair out of Jolene’s face.

“It’s okay Jolene. We’ll just enjoy each other’s company while your here and see where things go. There is no pressure to do anything you are not comfortable doing.” Luc assured Jolene holding both her hands again.

Jolene looked into Luc’s eyes which seemed to pull her in and hold her close, like she wanted his arms to do now. She realized she had an affect on him as he tightened his hands around her hands and Luc’s breathing quickened.

” I work, I model a little and I run a chain of clothing stores for woman. I am with Kasia, my daughter as much as possible. I wasn’t always able to be with her when she was a bit younger as much.” Jolene said feeling herself flushing again under Luc’s stare.

“What a lucky girl to have a mother with such beauty and intelligence. I’m sure she inherited those qualities from you. I would like to take Kasia’s pretty mother to dinner, after she comes to visit me in my office. Oui?” Luc said. His voice sounded sexy to Jolene.

Oui, Luc,” Jolene said quietly. ” Kasia will be surprised. She has gone on more dates than her mother has in many years.” Luc smiled at Jolene squeezing her hands in his still. Luc let Jolene’s hands go slowly, trailing his fingers along hers as he let his own hands drop and hers.

Jolene walked away from Luc back to her Aunt Cathy’s sitting room, willing herself not to catch her black boot heel on a carpet edge. She looked back once to see Luc standing where she left him in a hallway, watching Jolene walk away. She gave him a small smile and Luc waved.

Part 5 is coming soon, today even!

Poem: Minute – These Days

00004A290FD4.C0A801BA.000079A7.0015

There are days I cannot stop, I fly —

Hear me I sigh.

Look I’m so sore.

Wait for an encore.

—-

There are waters I cannot swim,

Dip my toes in,

The water is fine.

So I dive in.

—–

My body needs sleep and dreams

Funny how it seems,

I cannot win.

But each day I grin.

—-

The New Year brings so much with it

Can’t catch a drift.

Need to write more

Until my soul soars.
