Fascinating Connections in History, Literature, and Philosophy.

Connections are something I’m passionate about. I enjoy the connections ideas have with one another. When I was in university, my major concentration of study was English Literature because I loved to read, write, and hear stories. Later in my studies, in my third or fourth year, I learned about ‘New Historicism’ in a Literary Criticism Course. New historist’s believe that: “what is history is textual and what is textual is history.”

When we write about history we are also writing something literary and vice versa. This is because the writer’s beliefs, or the beliefs of the regime the writer was working under, affect their work. The ideas of ‘New Historicism’ made a fascinating connection for me between my English Major and History Minor.

Many kings such as Charlemagne (768 AD) for instance, had books written about them. These books made them appear to readers and history in a certain light. Charlemagne (or Charles the Great) United Western Europe, laying the grounds for France and Germany. He also was a huge supporter of the Papacy because the Pope legitimized him as a King ordained by God. Perhaps, that is one of the most extraordinaire tactics Charlemagne takes, he makes Western Europe Christian. Charlemagne would have his writers (monks) leave out any details that might make history look back on him in a less then ideal way. But history can often be no more than stories based on a few facts, it might be more literature than historically accurate.

An example of this is the epic poem, The Song of Roland. The epic poem is French literature that takes place during Charlemagne’s reign. It is the oldest surviving work of French literature. The poem is about the Battle of Ronceveax, a historically accurate battle. Charlemagne’s army is fighting the Muslim armies in Spain when they are tricked. The French army is annihilated, until Charlemagne arrives and defeats the Muslims. The character Roland and the French army have no qualms about bravely dying for their king. They appear noble. They are not like many of today’s anti-heros who are scared to die and do not have much in the way of fighting skills. Medieval heros were written to appear strong and divinely blessed (such as Roland) so history would look back on them in a favourable way according the values of the time, and of their Kings.

Another connection to history and literature is philosophy — which was almost was my second minor. What the great minds of a time period were thinking, influences the historical events of the time and the way literature was written. Thomas Aquainius for example, a philosopher in the 1400’s, believed in ‘natural theology’ as a priest for the Catholic Church. Much of his work was based off of Aristotle’s works, especially Aquinius’ famous Summa Theologica.

Catholicism regards Aquinas as a Saint and a model for priesthood. He influenced religion in his time (and now) and his philosophical work on Aristotle had an effect on literature being written. Aquainus’ views such as his beliefs on ‘virtue’ effect the history of the Catholic Church in the sense that Aquinas’ beliefs were the image the Papacy liked to portray.

In the latter Middle Ages, Renaissance and beyond, Catholic clergy such as the Pope and Cardinals, held a great deal of influence, similar to that of Kings. They commanded armies and despite Catholic teachings of celibacy, had wives and families. Peasants were sold items such as ‘indulgences’ to save their ancestor from purgatory, or to help buy their own way from hell. The focus was taken off how Jesus would save you if you believed in him to what you could do to get into heaven.

Clearly, history was deviating from what Acquinas taught and wrote. In this case what was written in literature was philosophical, but not the actual history occurring. I’m sure at the time, the Papacy would have argued that what they were doing was perfectly in line with Aquanius and the teachings of the Catholicism. This is why in part, a Reformation in religion occurrs in the 1600’s.

For the most part, I found my studies of philosophy, history, and literature to be connected. For many events, history is not what we think it is. Actual history is influenced by opinion and thought – our philosophies and beliefs. History to a large degree can be made-up or embellished and is more so literature than a sound historical account. But literature can have sound philosophical beliefs behind it. This is a fascinating and complex way to look at how ideas connect with what occurs in our lives, what we write, and what we believe.

“Glamorous, Glamorous oh Foxy Foxy,” Luxury.

Prompt: Tell us about the one luxury item you wish you could afford, in as much detail as you can. Paint a picture for us.

If there was an item of luxury that I could have… it would be hard to choose because there are things that are meaningful in various ways. Even the term ‘luxury’ can be debated. What’s luxury to me, may be only normal with someone who is used to having more money to spend. Or what I might have in my life right now might be very luxurious to someone who can hardly make ends meet and has to eat poorly and shop at the thrift store.

So here are my little list of luxuries I’d like to have:

http://www.polyvore.com Chanel Black Wool Coat

1. A thick black Chanel wool coat that is cut to highlight the curves of a woman’s body but is made in away that it’s style is timeless and will fit me all my life. The wool does not pill and the coat is soft and comfortable. When I’m eighty-five years old this coat will still look good on me and still be quality vintage Chanel. This coat is thick enough that I can wear it when it’s minus thirty degrees Celsius outside (with a sweater) but thin enough I can pull it on in the fall and the coat is not to bulky. It should be classic couture.

http://www.pinterest.com Luxury Condo Edmonton Ice District

2. My own luxury condo situated in or by the new ice district in downtown Edmonton. It will be a two-bedroom unit with a large master bedroom with a walk in closet by California closets with places to hang all my clothes winter/spring/summer/fall. It will have places to put my nice dress shoes, my high boots that I wear in Winter and Fall,  and all my other flats, runners, sandals, booties etc. It will be a completely outfitted closet with drawers for lingerie, scarves, jewelry, sunglasses and many other accessories drawers. There will be a tall window in my closet so I can see how outfits look in natural light and a chase lounge to sit on or throw shirts on. Also, I will need a large unique mirror on one of the smaller walls.

In the bedroom will be a little sitting area next to a window where I can read on my IPad and study.  The room will be painted light blue and feel cool, airy, and elegant. There is a king size bed that is so comfortable and sheets that are a soft cotton, duvets, and pillows that can be interchanged. There is a good sized his closet.

There is also a Master bath with a large tub, a glass tiled shower that is tall and double the size of a normal shower with a wooden bench. Their will be double sinks with lots or storage underneath with drawers for tiolatries and shelves for towels. Their will be a toilet that is a water closet. Of importance will be a dressing table (vanity) with a large mirror and much space for makeup, haircare, and appliances. The vanity is antique but repurposed. I would like a lot of the wood furniture to be painted and repurposed as this also environmentally friendly.

The house will have a kitchen with a bar that seats about six.  It will have a lot of counter space and all the necessary appliances in white and light blue dishes with coordinating colors. I will have everyday dishes and some good dishes and bowls to make food in and present food nicely. There will be a cupboard only for food with lots of shelves which aren’t too deep. The sink will be a double sink with a faucet that is connected by a hose to come out and spray extra dirty dishes. And there will be enough space for two bodies to move and work in the kitchen btw every surface.

There will be an open dining and living room area. There will be large fluffy coaches that are still sleek and stylish. There is a lot of light from windows and tastefully done lighting throughout the condo. The floors will be wood, I think dark but not black and we will have some carpets over top of the wood floor in the living and dining areas. The dining table is large rectangular wood and painted white and all the rooms in the house are warm and inviting. Their are many pieces of colourful and meaningful art work all through out the condo. Some of it is expensive and some of it is not. It is artwork me and my guy chose for whatever reason.

At the dining table are comfortable chairs that can be reapholstered if I want in years to come. There is a classic Chandelier above the table. And somewhere in the living room is a well stocked bar cart. And there is space to put wine glasses for white and red wine, champagne, martinis, and water.

There is a large flat screen TV above a fireplace that is only for show. One of those electric ones. There are blankets and a few pillows on the couches so you can settle down at night and watch the hockey game or your favorite show. There is a patio outside the living room and patio doors which let in a lot of light. The patio fits a small patio set with comfortable chairs and one of those patio tables you can light a fire in. There is space for a BBQ on the patio.

The second bedroom is lovely with an adjoining bathroom with double sinks, a glass shower, and a tub. It has a queen size bed and crisp sheets and a warm duvet. The colors are warm and spa like. There is a small sitting area guests can sit and read or watch a small TV and a decent sized walkin closet.

There is also lots of closets throughout the condo for storage of various items. There is a good size armour for coat storage in the entrance and a bench you can sit down on to take off your shoes.

The condo is modern, yet timeless taking in old elements of style and making them in a new way. The whole style is relaxing and not too cluttered. It is cleaned by a maid once a week 🙂

I want to visit Tuscany and some of it’s fruit and vinyards. I want to shop in Paris and see the Louvre a few times, and go a little ways up the Eiffle tower, not all. I want to eat at cafes and have tea and croissants. I want to dress up for dinner and try some French cuisine but no snails, fish or anything too weird. I want to travel with someone I love.

Spain would be nice to rent a villa for a week out on the white sand beaches and to experience Spanish culture in a couple of cities, Madrid and Barcelona. I want to visit Enfland and Ireland. Just the two capital cities, London and Dublin. I want to find out where my Great Grandparents were from in England. I want to go to churches and Abbeys, and Castles. I especially want to go to Westminister Abbey.

I want to go to Germany and Austria. I want to see where soldiers fought in wars and the devestation of a concentration camp, so I can always remind myself to never forget how horrible humans can be, and remind others too. I want to go where the Reformation occurred led by Martin Luther and John Calvin in Wittenburg. See Berlin and Frsnkfurt. And go where my family comes from in Leipzig.

Then I want to travel to Italy and see Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, and Pompeii. I want to see many historical buildings and art works. I would like to go to the Opera somewhere and I would like to shop. I would like to take in Italian culture. And lastly, I would like to go to Greece to Athens and Thessaloniki. I would love to see the ruins of Ancient Greece and Rome. I would like to go to the beach and take a boat trip on the blue water. Maybe this trip would be about six months I think.

6. I’d give this all up if I could be healthy. If I could not have mental illness or chronic fatigue. If I could think clearly and not wear out so fast. If I could not forget little things I now forget. If I could be fit and a healthy and able to take care of myself. This is a luxury worth infinitely more then anything I have described.

Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers – A Plague On Thee

The gigantic yellow boat filled the harbour with its shear mass. Stella knew why the ship was docking here, but she also knew there was great risk.

Suddenly, sick,  smelly, and confused people in ragged clothes began to pour out on to the dock. There were people of every color and race and they were followed by hundreds of body bags. Stella could almost cry, when she saw how many of the body bags were little.

These passengers were the survivors of a modern-day plague.  Bioterrorism had caused a mutated Bubonic Plague to spread to billions. Canadian and American Scientists were working on an antidote before it spread further.

Stella was a nurse, and she hurt for all her loved ones lost in Germany. She fearlessly helped the refugees, while unknowingly spreading more plague. Stella and certain others didn’t know that just because they were immune to the plague, didn’t mean they weren’t carrying the disease.

Writing 101 – Ann’s Engagement Ring Part IV of A Letter to Ann)

www.tiffany.ca
http://www.tiffany.ca

It had been 2 months since Ann had been at work as David’s Assistant or had been David’s girlfriend. It had been 2 months since Ann had found that awful letter that Cameal the receptionist had placed on the park trail for Ann to find and believe that David had written. ” 2 months,” Ann murmured aloud. She rummaged through her purse looking for a particular object.

It was a platinum ring with a pear-shaped diamond from Tiffany’s. She adored this ring. It was the engagement ring David had given her when he had proposed to her all those months ago. Yet she had run from him, afraid to trust him. Afraid of a little receptionist who had seemed to her the ideal young women, the women David should want.

Ann was 33-years-old now and not in her 20’s anymore. She had the tiniest little wrinkles appearing around her eyes from squinting and smiling. Her skin did not quite hold that youthful and baby-faced glow that those in their 20’s had. But she wasn’t old. Far from it her life was just beginning.

After leaving David, Ann had needed time to think. So she had taken her vacation time, 6 weeks plus two weeks from the year before and David had not objected. She had taken off and done what she had always wanted to do as a 20 something. She had gone to Europe and visited France, Germany, and Britain.

She had seen so many beautiful Cathedrals, places where you could feel God’s spirit and the spirit’s of the Saints, humming in the air in a peaceful reverent tune. She had been shopping at too many expensive boutiques in Paris and all over France. She was a well paid Executive Assistant and she had saved her money for so long a little shopping didn’t hurt. Not a few Louboutin shoes, Dior Dresses, and some lingerie that David would love to see her in, that she felt terrific in — La Perla and some brands she did not know.

Ann planned to go back to David but she had just needed time to think about their relationship, about their future. She didn’t want to wait long to get married with girl’s like Cameal in the world ready to spoil one’s plans. Ann didn’t care what her and David did as long as a few close friends and family were at the wedding. Ann also wanted a dog and sometime soon, little one’s to play with the dog. She had such big dreams.

She stepped off her flight out of EIA into Edmonton, into the cold Alberta winter.  Ann wondered if everything would be okay. Crossing her fingers she drove home, not to her condo, but her and David’s home. She dropped most of her luggage at the door and grabbed her purse and her carry on and went up the stairs only to find that at 5 am David was gone, probably already at work. She wasn’t sure if she should stay but Ann didn’t really have much of a choice as she hadn’t slept in hours. She slipped her ring on her hand and fell asleep a top the covers of the bed. She hoped David was okay.

———————-

David massaged the temples of his head and ran his fingers through his short dark brown hair. He was one of the partner’s at the law firm he worked at. He owned part of the company and he missed his Assistant like crazy. Where was Ann now, he wondered? She had emailed him now and then with little pictures of her doing things in Europe, with a croissant, below the Eiffel Tower, By Buckingham Palace, at some church somewhere in Germany.

2 months were such a long time for Ann to be gone away from him. and away as his Assistant. Ann’s filler at work was so slow and all over the place. She was no Ann. He was getting behind at work and to top it all off that little whore Cameal had accused him of sexual harassment that day she had chased Ann from his home.

David loved Ann. There was no question when it came to her and Cameal that there was no competition. Cameal was some immature girl. He had explained so much to HR and and it had been tough to convince Blanche the head of HR that he hadn’t done anything to Cameal except place the letter she had written to Ann in her inbox to show her he knew what she was up to. Blanche had sympathized with David and said Cameal had been getting complaints left and right about her work. She had been a good worker but now she just seemed to flout everyone except David. Blanche found it curious that she would all of a sudden turn on David.

David had told Blanche everything that had happened between him, Cameal, and Ann. Blanche knew of course that David had a relationship with Ann and there were no rules against office romances but HR liked to be informed if it was serious. He was set to get a new Assistant anyways, and Ann would move up in the office after they got married. If they got married? Was that possible still?

Blanche assured David that Cameal had crossed many boundaries with different men at work and that she would be ‘taken care of immediately’. David was not in trouble, Cameal was no longer a threat, and David figured he would take the day off and go home and sleep. He hadn’t slept much since the harassment accusation and the last picture Ann sent, a smile on her face, as she took a selfie on the flight home. Maybe she came to my place, our place, he thought, hopefully.

———

Ann awoke to kisses on her neck and face. She stretched and smiled even though she knew she looked bad, makeup all smeared, and jet lag showing under her eyes. She moved her head back to receive more kisses. She dreamt it was David and he smelt so good, citrusey and woodsy like his cologne. She moved her hand up in this dream to stroke David’s cheek and felt the stubble there, moved her hand up further felt his soft hair and then the frame of his glasses. He must be tired, she thought, he never wears glasses.

She didn’t protest as dream David slid her out of her jacket and shoes and under the covers of the bed and perhaps it was then when she was snuggled beside him that she felt for real this time, his breath on her neck and continued little kisses.

“Your back Ann” David rasped “your really hear, for good?” he wondered aloud. She turned around and opened her eyes so she could see David. Between her thick lashes she saw his dear face and began to trace it with her fingers, “for good” she whispered. And they both slept the sleep of the dead that day, David’s finger tracing the platinum band of Ann’s ring as he fell asleep.

———–

Cameal was in tears. Life wasn’t fair. She was fired. HR had not believed her harassment claim about David calling it bogus and insulting to David who had been very kind to Cameal given the circumstances. She had received 6 months severance and been told to pack up her things at her desk. She did this as she wept and regretted having ever met David or that ugly Ann. Fine. Go ahead be with her David, she thought. You two deserve each other. And they did.
