I think I am having a fashion crisis. I have always tried to remain on trend but I’m seriously disgusted by some of the fashion lately. Most of it doesn’t look terrific on a skinny model so why do the makers of fashion believe it will look charming on the average woman?
The clothing items I am talking about are these shapeless sweaters and shirts, extremely wide pants, and sheer leggings. If we begin with shirts, my comment would be it is fashionable to wear a longer shirt (a tunic length top) with your leggings or skinny pants because your bottom is covered. (This is wonderful if your leggings are thin too.)
But when a woman wears a shapeless tunic or worse, one which is wide at the bottom, it appears to make her hips look huge, especially if she carries her weight in her hip area. She is making herself look fat by wearing this kind of top, even if she isn’t heavy at all.
Tunic length tops look wonderful when you can create a waistline with a belt. At the least,
a woman can purchase tunics and shirts where the waist goes in or the tunic is fitted, to make it appear as if you have a beautifully shaped body. I understand, some woman are trying to hide lumps and bumps but whatever your size, it is better for a woman to appear in fitted clothing. Clinton and Stacey used to emphasis this fact on the former TLC show What Not to Wear, and the message still applies to today’s fashions. Baggy tops or clothing in general, make a woman look bigger and I know that is not how any woman wants to look. Woman want to be comfortable and look more streamlined and shapely.
My second complaint with fashion right now are these awful bottoms called ‘wide leg’ if they are pant length or gaucho if they are calf length. I think you have to be tiny to wear them. Then again, a small woman looks lost in this type of pant. If you do happen to have hips or any kind of stomach these pants make your problem areas and legs appear huge. Even fitted, they have this baggy appearance. They remind me of drapes. Also, Gaucho’s cut a woman off in a bad place mid-calf, making a woman’s calves look bigger.
Flared pants, straight leg, or skinny pants all look fine but wide pants or gauchos are bottoms which will take away from a woman’s beautiful shape and make her look bigger. Most of us are not tiny enough to pull off this look. If you are, you might consider the wide pants or gauchos are bigger then you; you are drowning in them. Again, look to a style of a pant that is fitted, they will make on any woman appear thinner.
Also, if I can quickly make a comment on leggings. They are comfortable and look stylish with tunics and even some short tops. But since they are an item you may wear a lot, it helps to invest in a few pairs which are made of thicker fabric and are not sheer or see through. Thicker fabric will also make your legs and butt look better because no lumps show through. I recommend the brand HUE which can be found at HUE online, Simons, or Hudson’s Bay. They run around $40 to $50 for leggings which are made of thicker fabric and often have shaping properties which will hide a tummy and other problem areas. They are also warmer in Winter.
Another place I hugely recommend for leggings is The Spanx Store online or in store. The leggings are pricey running you about $100 for a pair, but these leggings are made extremely well and will last you a couple of years. They have a solid Spanx tummy panel which keeps your stomach flat and the leggings are made of material thick enough to give your legs, bottom, and stomach a nice clean tight fit. No lumps or bumps are visible. At HUE or Spanx you may also want to check-out their other legging type pants such as jeggings, or leggings with cute details such as leather-like details.
