#OctPoWriMo Day 9/Tale Weavers/Saturday Mix: Poem – Lunes – “Roaring Lies” #amwritingpoetry #TaleWeavers

For OctPoWriMo Day 9 the Prompt is based on what love is or could be. Also, thanks to Michael of MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting Tale Weavers. This Prompt was based around the notion of doing your best.

Eyes focused, rod and reel,

Clasped tight, pulling —

Swath of muscled scales silver.

*****

It’s not about the fish,

Lakes’ waves lapping,

Hound dog rocked to sleep.

*****

Not a getaway, but hideaway;

Crazy woman erupted,

Her viciousness spat on him.

****

Apologies mumbled, yelling escalates until,

She’s gone forever;

He sighs, lungs breathing relief.

*****

Her memory a gag reflex;

False love hides,

Behind beauty, lies monster roaring.

*****

His shoulders un-tense, canoe rocks;

He tried; she —

Wasn’t worth her abusive behavior.

We live along the river in delapitated shanties. At sunrise we sleepily pull on our rubber boots and checked flannel shirts. It’s late fall and the days are chillier. It doesn’t mean we can’t fish, but the joy of a temperate summer is a distant memory. Gone are the laughter filled nights of plentiful fish, drinking rice wine until midnight.

Harsh temperatures have arrived. Our mornings are early so we can chase the waning light. Evening arrives and the catch is not terrible but not plentiful. The fish at this time of year are wiggly and stronger.

I shiver in the morning light, winter’s stinging winds drawing near. Soon the river will be coated with ice. Then, all we can do is drill a hole and hope for something to bite — anything.

“Hey Liz, what’s your kitchen chair doing out in the middle of the lake?” Barb asked.

Liz was perplexed, “My first thought was that my boys had done this, thinking it would be funny. But this is just the type of thing their Dad would think was hilarious too.”

“Maybe Mark did it?”

“No he was out like a light at 10:00 pm. The boys were genuinely surprised about the chair and ran to the window to see it. I actually believe they didn’t do it,” Liz said.

The next day the snow was blizzarding, the temperatures so frigid the lake froze thickly. When warmer weather returned Liz saw her Dad outside fishing through a hole in the ice.

She smiled walking out to the ice where her Dad sat:”Dad, did you move this chair outside for fishing?”

Liz’s Dad laughed,” I did not. But it was just sitting here so I figured why not use it?”

The mystery of the chair in the middle of the lake continues.
