Day 11 – NaPoWriMo/A to Z Challenge/Writing Prompt: Poem – Bop – “Peripheral Madness” #NaPoWriMo #AtoZchallenge #poetry

Today’s NaPoWrIMo prompt is to write a poetry form called the ” Bop, a kind of combination sonnet + song. . In the basic Bop poem, a six-line stanza introduces the problem, and is followed by a one-line refrain. The next, eight-line stanza discusses and develops the problem, and is again followed by the one-line refrain. Then, another six-line stanza resolves or concludes the problem, and is again followed by the refrain.” For the A to Z Challenge the authors name will begin with letter J from GoodRead’s quotes. Thanks to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for last week’s writing prompt and picture.

“I don’t think it had ever occurred to me that man’s supremacy is not primarily due to his brain, as most of the books would have one think. It is due to the brain’s capacity to make use of the information conveyed to it by a narrow band of visible light rays. His civilization, all that he had achieved or might achieve, hung upon his ability to perceive that range of vibrations from red to violet. Without that, he was lost.”  ― John Wyndham, The Day of the Triffids

Sight I think is amazing for what could,

We see without vision, eyes to perceive?

The world around us is intricate, complex,

So our eyes make sense of the colours, shade —

Tints, tones, complementary colours, those —

In the same family, yet inside were sightless

Gazing beyond sight, gazing within, without.

——-

It’s fascinating to think how each of —

Us sees the same thing differently; by —

Sight and experience — the image changes.

All see such varied pictures notice where,

The colours blur, wind; how they can deceive us.

How red, green, purple, blue, orange and yellow,

Mix together, painterly dragons fly.

Optical illusions nearly missed disguised.

Gazing beyond sight, gazing within, without.

——-

Blended carefully the animals come —

To life; birds, unicorns, oxen, and some,

Mythical creatures, pale faces turned down.

See not only within the painting see —

Inside your heart, for the truth sits there,

Ignore the blindness, learn to fathom more.

Gazing beyond sight, gazing within, without.

Violet read the letter her daughter had sent her in disbelief. To fathom a girl of Elizabeth’s quality of breeding would do this to her family was unimaginable

Harsh Victorian society could never know the truth of what Elizabeth had done and Violet wasn’t sure she could bear to keep in contact with her daughter.

She would focus on her other children. Violet’s sons had married well. Three of her daughters were also married suitably and having more children. Her two youngest daughters were courting wealthy gentlemen.

Elizabeth if not cut-off from her family, could ruin them all. Violet reread part of her daughter’s letter once more in disgust:

“Did you know Mama, there is such thing as a circus? Freaks of all kinds, but I love them because they’re genuine, not like the society you so desperately try to trap me in. Years of dance lessons have left me flexible. I pirouette far above the ground and dance in the air; I ride the elephants.

It’s amazing travelling the world and I won’t be returning to London, except for an occasional visit of course. I’ve married one of the men who runs the circus. He is like me, gentry who has run away from a society of judgement. I love you and hope we can write, but I can’t be the woman you want me to be. . .”

We Get Lost

On certain days we all get lost, trying to unfathom the unfathomable.
We try so hard just to make it work, and make it right,
That when we fail we are as lost as pennies in a pond full of pennies.
To succeed we think, we must make everything a success, we cannot fail.
But we don’t see that to err is human, and to fail is to do what we do best.
We try to change, ourselves, to change each other.

But I realized last night we cannot change other people, only they can change themselves.
And if I tell you the truth then you’ll realize, most people don’t want change.
Most of us are content in our shells, and don’t want to alter for someone else.
Should we alter for someone else, should we change to fit our souls together?

I do not know what wars you battle on the inside, but I have felt the scars and pricks of my own battles.
I have felt every now and then a pain so sharp, I scarce can breath.
But these horrible pains can be overcome in time, like pains of birth, they last only so long, and what remains is strength.
A person tattered, no longer torn, a beautiful strong woman who cannot be ignored.

But like any seed who breaks it’s shell to become a root, we too must break our shell and become something greater.
On certain days, I cannot deal with the pain of these moments.
But I know that there is daylight, that the pain he left, it will heal, and there is someone out there to love me better.
To love me all the more for my scars.
