On the path you get lost ’cause you can’t find —

Your way; no doors through the puddles find sway.

To open, reveal the road; thus, engraved —

With the direction, you’re hunting; rain blinds,

No better journeys exist than chill times —

Where your wet, but exhausted you find ways.

Though angry winds, with freezing sleet berate,

Wandering lost, you’ll burn in your mind —

Slippery trails, bricks steeped in sludge, than trills —

Of harsh winds chiming against grim sign posts;

Metallic melodies haunt, notes crescendo, thrill —

Calling to you, as you pray soulfully;

That your mind won’t panic, but think calmly.

Enlightened, finding Home through the rain’s song.

Flash Fiction for the Aspiring Writer/Music Challenge: An Ordinary Girl #amwriting #flashfiction #musicchallenge

Last week’s FFftAW is hosted by Priceless Joy. Also, this is not the recent music challenge but the previous one, Music Challenge #19, with the song “Ordinary World” by Green Day Featuring Miranda Lambert.

Ordinary World” by Green Day Ft. Miranda Lambert

Gemma was furious, she strode to the back yard, grabbing her keys from her purse, sputtering off in her old Toyota. She heard her parents both yelling as she squealed away. She exited onto a highway, then into New York, the city of shining lights.

At sixteen she desired her own apartment downtown, near the train and whichever university fit her design passion. A place where her mom didn’t search through her stuff. She had collected a great deal of buried treasure for her future apartment. Gemma was extraordinarily intelligent and had the marks to attend any university, with a full scholarship, even at age sixteen.

The sunrise blinded her as she drove past the downtown core. At dawn, she got out at her favorite park with the tree with twisted roots. Here she had met Ethan. Together they existed in an Ordinary World of small dreams and endless moments. He supported her but convinced her time and again to return home only for another two years.

When she came home after her advanced high school classes, she was besieged by her mom and dad. She gazed apologetically at their worried faces, trying to find the right words. She knew they had big plans for her. They didn’t want her to be ordinary like them, but it was what she wanted most.

Twilight fades and darkness overtakes the sun. It’s difficult to see at night in the winter when there isn’t much snow. Those glistening piles such as frozen clouds, usually manage to catch the moon’s radiant glow. But tonight the only light outside is a crescent moon and far above, the glimmering stars.

The lights on the dashboard flicker on and I gaze at you behind the wheel, humming softly to yourself as you continue our drive in an ink dark night. I can see from your face you’re exhausted.

“Please let me drive for you? At least a couple of hours so you can sleep, Tye?”

You roll your eyes at me in the relative darkness in the inside of our car, “You don’t drive well enough. You only drive to the grocery store and a short distance to work. You don’t have experience driving on icy highways at night, Cara” Tye looks at me waiting for me to respond.

Finally I peep, “When I took my drivers lessons, we drove on icy snowy highways. I drive all around the city,” I inform him. “Highways aren’t my favorite but you’re falling asleep at the wheel and I can handle driving until we reach Red Deer. The roads are deserted and I’m going to be driving straight and making sure I stay a good distance behind any other vehicle I come across.”

Tye nods and bites his lip. I can tell he has no energy to argue with me. “I do need the sleep badly. When we get to Red Deer let’s stop and stay at a hotel for the night, okay Cara?” I smile at Tye in agreement and watch him pull the car over to the side of the highway to trade seats wih me.

I start to drive and at first I can see he’s a bit frightened for me and frankly so am I. But eventually Tye realizes I can keep up the speed on the highway and that I’m driving well, keeping my eyes on the road.

At one moment I feel the car wiggle and slide over an ice patch but I pump the breaks and I drive the car without incident again. I wonder if he noticed my dangerous slip, but peering to my side I see Tye is sound asleep.

My poor guy, I think running my one hand through his hair as we reach Red Deer. I park the car near a decent hotel. The Best Western appears newer and well taken care of. Tye rubs his eyes when I gently shake him awake.

When we are finally in our room I shower and I’m surprised when he joins me. “So, we’re talking again I guess? You’re not mad at me anymore?” I ask Tye.

He holds me from behind, curving his body into mine and sighing in my wet hair. He kisses my cheek, “I don’t want to fight with you Cara. I want us to us again. I don’t like that your ex kissed you, but I thought about it the entire time we’ve been driving home from the mountains. You didn’t initiate the kiss and your friends said the same thing. My buddies agreed with them too. The whole situation made me so angry, I can’t even explain it.”

I nod and rest my head back on Tye’s bare shoulder, “I would never, you know that? But I can’t explain things to you if you won’t communicate with me. We could’ve solved this back in the mountains and skipped the tense ride home. I didn’t mean to make you jealous. I punched my ex for hitting on me after you went back to the hotel still foaming at the mouth,” I say with a proud smirk.

Tye strokes my cheek and kisses my lips, “Punched him, hey? I’m so happy to hear you did. I wanted to more than punch him before I cooled down. It’s all forgotten, Cara. But I think we could both use some extra distractions just in case.”

I giggle and turn around so I’m flush against Tye, “Okay, let’s completely wipe our minds clear of the past couple of days.”

The night became one of our most memorable nights together.

A Mixed Bag

—–

Timo and Erica had been stranded in the desert when their small plane crashed near Cairo. Sunburnt, exhausted, and thirsty, they were shocked to see an Oasis.

“An Oasis Timo, we’re saved. There’s water and even a chalice to drink from,” Erica yelled.

“You’re seeing things Erica, there’s no water and no chalice.”

Really look, it’s only a few steps away — we’re here,” Erica said rushing forward to drink from a beautiful pale blue spring; however, whenever she tried to cup the spring water with her hands, it slide away.

“It won’t let me drink and I’m half-dead,” she cried.

Timo rubbed his eyes, finally believing the blue spring underneath a palm tree existed. A chalice made with a human skull sat in the middle of a stone alter as well. It gave him a feeling of dread.

“Erica, to drink the water you need the chalice but don’t do it. There’s something terrifying and evil about this cup.”

She turned to Timo, giving him a dark stare, “I’ll drink from the chalice if I want.” Erica strode to the alter, bowed mockingly and lifted the chalice to kiss the skull on the mouth.

Timo grimaced as she scooped it into the water and drank. It was an Indiana Jones’ movie come to life as Erica’s life force was sucked from her body which disintegrated until she was dust.

He decide to try drinking from the spring without the chalice. Timo drank all the water he could then sat down beneath the large palm tree in the shade. He wondered why cupping his hands worked for him and not for poor Erica as he drifted asleep.

When he awoke, Timo heard the blessed noise of rescuers in the distance and hollered for help. To his amazement the Oasis had disappeared along with the chalice.

He contemplated what he should say happened to Erica as no one would believe the truth.

Bruno’s days were spent turning the wheel, bored and physically exhausted. At night he returned to his hovel, barely awake enough to eat thin gruel. In the day there was mead to ensure the serfs didn’t rebel.

But the mead wasn’t helping today. Bruno glared at the the serf master, upset he didn’t even know what or why this wheel turned.

One day when the serf master tried to whip them, Bruno reached out and caught the whip grabbing it and knocking the serf master out. He ran as far away as he could run.

Bruno heard in the east, a landowner was giving out pieces of property in return for part of the proceeds; he thought this would be a much better living — at least, he hoped.

A Mixed Bag

Ginnie and Keegan gazed out across the city far away from the mountainous hill they had climbed.

“I’m exhausted. I don’t know how I’ll ever get down from here,” Ginnie mumbled, trying to catch her breath.

Keegan smiled. “This was only a two-day hike? How are you ever going to do the West Coast Trail? There’s so much climbing involved in that one. We’ve got to train more.”

“Seriously Keegan, I told you I’m not into hiking that much. I can barely breathe as it is. It’s not only that I’m out of shape; it’s difficult with allergies, inhaling grass, pollen, and fungi.”

Keegan laughed, “What about your inhaler? Did you take your allergy medication?”

“Yeah, I’ve used them both. I know you don’t get it but often my throats feels constricted.”

“Are you having troubles breathing?” Keegan asked worriedly.

“I’m fine. It’ll be okay if we have lunch and rest. Hey what’s that?”

Behind them a great cloud had mushroomed up in the sky from the city miles away. A great whooshing sound could be heard echoing from down in the valley. Even far away, sirens could be heard.

Ginnie started to cough and wheeze and Keegan patted her back, “Breathe babe, breathe.”

But then Keegan himself was having trouble breathing. A putrid smell was in the air. He peered at Ginnie almost unconscious beside him as they both fell to the ground.

Keegan reached for Ginnie’s hand and then he began to cough. Before he collapsed he muttered, “I think this is chemical warfare, or worse.”

Both Keegan and Ginnie lay still.

Three Line Tales: Songs on Fire #3Linetales #lyrics #music

Thanks to Sonya of Only 100 Words for hosting 3 Line Tales:

——

Dan Carlson

——–

1.”She’s just a girl, and she’s on fire; hotter than a fantasy, longer like a highway; she’s living in a world, and it’s on fire; feeling the catastrophe, but she knows she can fly away; oh, she got both feet on the ground; and she’s burning it down; oh, she got her head in the clouds; and she’s not backing down; this girl is on fire . . .”

Alicia Keys “Girl On Fire”

——–

2. “After I have traveled so far; we’d set the fire to the third bar; we’d share each other like an island; until exhausted, close our eyelids . . .”

Snow Patrol – “Set The Fire to The Third Bar”

——–

3. “I’m a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm; and the scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold; my blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones; it keeps my veins hot, the fire’s found a home in me; I move through town, I’m quiet like a fight; and my necklace is of rope, I tie it and untie. . .”

Lorde -“Yellow Flicker Beat”

——-

Decided to try some lyrics this week. This prompt made me think of many songs and how we use fire to describe so many feelings, situations, and experiences in life. There is fire in everything.

Poem: Etherees – “The Man In Darkness”

Thanks to The Daily Post for the prompt words Stroll and Chaos.

Down through the woods and over hills,

Strides a calm and quiet man searching,

For lost trails, gazing at the–

Setting sun, as the moon takes —

Precedent, inky —

Sky a light with —

Northern lights,

Greenish,

Glow.

Stroll,

Through the —

Darkness of —

Night’s powerful —

Sting; cold cutting winds,

No warmth found in shadow,

Pine needles crunching under–

Foot and animals rising to —

Go about nocturnal business and —

Scare a stranger unused to the dark night.

——–

No fear in this man’s heart, strolling in the dark,

He feels at home in night for day is —

His chaos; the constant trill of —

Sounds and day life driving —

His spirit to hiding,

Beneath acquired,

Layers built to —

Shut-out every-

One else,

Life.

Night,

Brings its–

Peacefulness,

Stability,

Reason and clear mind,

No shouting and yelling,

No deadlines or staying —

Into supper time, grieving him,

Of nights call for him, wander its soul,

Find comfort beneath the moon, wolves howl.

—–

In sleeping bag beneath the sky this man,

At last rests his weary head because,

Tomorrow morning chaos reigns,

People who always want you–

To do something you don’t,

You’ve no time to lose,

Can’t clean their mess,

But you do,

It’s not,

Night.

Moral Monday`s Flash Fiction: The White Rabbit is Late

Thank you to Nortina from Lovely Curses for hosting the Moral Monday`s challenge. This week`s moral is: ” Better Late Than Never.” Excuse the lateness of this 100 word offering.

White Rabbit Alice and Wonderland
The White Rabbit – Alice in Wonderland – (www.underscoopfire.com)

Alice was waiting for the White Rabbit. In all her time in Wonderland, Alice couldn’t remember the White Rabbit having ever not been, exactly on time.

Alice began tapping the toes of her maryjane’s on the road. That intolerable sweeping dog was at it again, sweeping the path away.

“White Rabbit where are you?” Alice called. They were hours late for tea and the Mad Hatter would be crazy upset.

Exhausted, the White Rabbit arrived. Blood streaked his snowy fur.

Alice gasped, “What happened?”

“Hunters,” he said. “You humans and your hunters.”

NaPoWriMo: Poem – Afraid to Say – Quatern – “Worth”

img_1070-1

——-

And now, for our prompt (optional, as always). This one sounds simple, but it can be pretty difficult. Today, I challenge you to write a poem that includes a line that you’re afraid to write. This might be because it expresses something very personal that makes you uncomfortable – either because of its content (“I always hated grandma”), or because it seems too emotional or ugly or strange (“I love you so much I would eat a cockroach for you”). Or even because it sounds too boring or expected (“You know what? I like cooking noodles and going to bed at 7 p.m.”). But it should be something that you’re genuinely a little scared to say. Happy (or if not happy, brave) writing!

For more information please see the website for NaPoWriMo.  Also from The Daily Post I will be using the word prompts Green and Superstition. For more information on a Quatern please see Shadow Poetry.

Green days gone by, fleeting and lost,

Remember, I felt like a hot live wire,

Pushed into your skin, so alive.

Time moves, I blame God for life’s cost.

—–

Memoirs of our younger days,

Green days, gone by, fleeting and lost.

Superstition, souls embossed.

Magical times new, flowing this way.

—–

Life is a dream, a fast moment,

I keep hoping time won’t accost,

Green days, gone by, fleeting and lost.

Count your seconds, don’t relent.

—–

Facing our challenges exhausted,

Each minute has value and worth.

In life there’s time for our rebirth.

Green days gone by, fleeting and lost.
