Saturday Mix Flash Fiction: Soliquey – Blank Verse – “The Con” #amwriting #soliliquey #fiction #SaturdayMix

Thanks to Bastet from MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting Saturday Mix. This week’s prompt is a soliloquy at a train station. I’ll be using blank verse or unrhymed iambic pentameter as the Bard did.

—–

“Imagine a scene, a train is pulling out of the station and a person standing on the platform looking dejected. What can have happened. Perhaps this person is someone in the station wishing to leave but for some reason hasn’t. “

So leaves the train, so leaves my heart,

Why him I once loved, now I know not?

Must have been his eyes so brilliant a green,

Gems such as emeralds, a sea-green storm brewed.

Was it his cavalier smile, his laugh?

With him I felt wanted, weak in the knees.

I was his Queen, he my adoring King.

He cared for me gently, said I shouldn’t stay —

On my own, for he loved me; fooled me,

Underestimated a woman cruelly scorned.

I saw cracks in the vase, facade crumbled,

An artist’s dream of beauty such a fake,

He left, emptied my pockets of money.

This con thinks he’s safe going to Bahamas,

Since he betrayed me, I say differently.

He’ll be doing some flying, and me thinks he’s done.
Thrown off the tallest bridge, out of the train.

Expensive was his end, but I’m appeased

I watched his train moving away, still —

Missing his voice, his touch, time spent loving.

But I know he never loved me, I was ‘means’ —

To an end; yet, the ‘real end’ was his own.

Poem: Petrarchen (Italian) Sonnet – “Pirate Treasure Lost” #amwriting #poetry #sonnet

Elzabeth Swann : Pirates of The Caribbean – Keira Knightly (en.wikipedia.org)

————

There’s a map, in whose treasures know not I.
No ruby, emeralds, or Dabloons reside.
There’s no treaty by which I’m bound to abide.

Hidden crowns gold, dripping silver so alive.

The pirate in me razes, rum drinking by slides,

Statues of marble from the crypt I hide.

Burying paintings, my beloved Renoir’s,

X Marks the spot where all treasure confides.

——-

But I’ll not tell you it’s value hid deep.

Presence lost in jungle, where spiders creep,

Deadly venom, no cure can fight, to speak.

The map survives, a tattoo inked in sleep,

Adventure awaits, your life to beseech.

Trespassers beware; in quicksand you’ll weep.

NaPoWriMo: Poem – Mirrored Refrain – “Priceless Worth”

And last, but not least, our prompt (optional, as always). Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that incorporates a call and response. Calls-and-responses are used in many sermons and hymns (and also in sea chanties!), in which the preacher or singer asks a question or makes an exclamation, and the audience responds with a specific, pre-determined response. (Think: Can I get an amen?, to which the response is AMEN!.). You might think of the response as a sort of refrain or chorus that comes up repeatedly, while the call can vary slightly each time it is used. Here’s a sea chanty example:

Please see NaPoWriMo for more information.

——

The Mirrored Refrain is rhyming verse form constructed by Stephanie Repnyek. The poem is formed by three or more quatrains where two lines within the quatrain are the “mirrored refrain” or alternating refrain. The rhyme scheme is as follows: xaBA, xbAB, xaBA, xbAB, etc.. x represents the only lines that do not rhyme within the poem. A and B represent the refrain. The first four stanzas of the example poem are labeled for better understanding.

Please see Shadow Poetry for more information on this poetry type.

Jewels worth immeasurable value.

Diamonds, Rubies, Emeralds, Sapphire.

Of things attained in this wide world,

Your love is precious, priceless worth.

——–

When life is tough, nothing works out.

Smoke is choking, the world’s a trial.

Your love is precious, priceless worth.

Of things attained in this wide world.

——–

Tiredness, fatigue, creeping in —

Resting, let yourself sleep, respire.

Of things attained in this wide world.

Your love is precious, priceless worth.

—–

People are worth the effort to see,

Memories are lived, life’s fragile.

Your love is precious, priceless worth,

Of things attained in this wide  world.

——

You can’t take it with you when time ends,

Use your life to reach out and inspire,

Of things attained in this wide world,

Your love is precious, priceless worth.
