Interview With Jasminder Bains

Welcome to another biweekly interview on Mandibelle16. I’m hoping where ever you are the weather is nice and spring is on its way or summer isn’t too hot. This week I interviewed the impressive and talented writer Jasminder Bains from the United States. You can check out her blog here: Confessions Of A Reborn Girl

1. Hi Jasminder. Please Tell Us About Yourself?

Where to begin…I live to write because it’s my form of therapy and I love weaving words into stories. I’m a full-time dream chaser with a knack for crafting things and philosophizing and overthinking when I can.

I’m two years clean and keeping it that way. Psychology fascinates me; hence, I’m majoring in it. You’ll find there is a lot of psychology based posts on my blog. I love to sing and dance to KPOP when nobody’s around, or at least when I think nobody’s around. I had to run up three flights of stairs because I got caught once.

Also, I’m obsessed with green tea and I like to meditate because it clears my mind. I prefer video games and Doc Martens to dresses ( I only own one dress) and makeup. The only makeup I wear is eyeliner and it’s about as good as my sense of direction. I get lost even with a GPS to help me find my way. I’m an aggressive middle-class minimalist who pillages anything I can get my hands on; this is why I have a ring of rocks sitting on my dresser.

I have moments where I’m incredibly with the times and others I’m not. I set up a Twitter account recently. I have no idea what half the buttons mean. But I can give you Excel pointers and talk about ‘markdown formatting;’ I can’t tell you much about Facebook.

2. When Did You Begin Writing and Blogging? What Does Writing and Blogging Mean To You? What motivates and inspires you?

I started blogging last July, but I’ve been writing since I was in fifth grade. Poetry and blogging are how I vent as well as defeat stereotypes. I write because I want to heal other people and because I love doing it.

I find inspiration from my life because I’m an avid people-watcher and I overthink everything. I find new material is as simple as walking into the middle of a cafeteria and sitting down. I learned so much about human interaction by doing this. I make time for writing whenever I can.

“I live to write because it’s my form of therapy and I love weaving words into stories. I’m a full-time dream chaser with a knack for crafting things and philosophizing and overthinking when I can.” – Jasminder Bains

3. What Are Your Most Current Writing Projects? Any Future Projects You Have In Mind?

I’m planning on participating in the 2017 Kindness Challenge! The link to sign up is here if you’re interested. I’m also hosting my own blogging challenge, it’s called the ‘Boundless Challenge.’ The premise of the challenge is to share a #boundlessmoment from the past week where you did something that you thought you weren’t actually capable of doing.

I started the challenge not too long ago so it’s relatively new. My goal is to inspire people through this prompt. Maybe they will believe they are capable of doing much more than they think they can do. Check out the sixth #boudlessmoment challenge on my blog HERE.

4. Can You Tell Us More About Your Blog and Why You Started Blogging?

When I founded @Confessions (Confessions Of A Reborn Girl) I had one goal and one goal alone: to teach others about human potential. Too many times I’ve heard stories of people who gave up on their dreams because they didn’t think they had it in them or someone discouraged them from their path. I’m here to tell you that you are good enough and that nobody can tell you otherwise.

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” – Alice Walker

That being said, [my blog] would qualify as a lifestyle blog, though I focus more on mentality and mindset rather than fashion or food. My blog categories are different takes on that ‘boundless lifestyle’ if you will.

Life, as the catagory name states, revolves around my everyday thoughts and experiences. [As I noted above] you can also find my own blogging challenge, the Boundless Challenge, which is devoted to inspiring the WordPress community to achieve their full potential. At the end of each week, I share #boundlessmoments of my own and from across the internet. . . Who knows? Maybe next week you’ll be featured!

Writer’s Corner is [a segment on my blog] where I analyze social norms and American culture along with occasional philosophizing. DIY is exactly as the name states. I have this category because crafting opened up my thinking in a way nothing else could. I believe that it can do the same for you. [Lastly, my] meditation journal [catagory] stems from my adoration for — well — meditation. [Since I] over-think, meditation is the perfect counter to my habit and it helps me analyze my emotions and inner conflict.

“Too many times, I’ve heard stories of people who gave up on their dreams because they just didn’t think they had it in them or someone discouraged them from their path. I’m here to tell you that you are good enough and that nobody can tell you otherwise” – Jasminder Bains

5. How Does Your Blog Tie-In With Your Stance on Mental Health?

I continue to challenge the stigmas and negative stereotypes surrounding the field of mental health. There’s so much more to psychology than depression or schizophrenia or bipolar disease; [these are] only a small branch of [what is called] abnormal psychology. In order to understand the abnormal, we must first understand the normal.

I hope that by being open about my own experiences with mental health challenges and triumphs, I can give others the strength to do the same. There’s nothing wrong with having a bad day, month, or year. There’s nothing wrong with having things that keep you up at night. There’s nothing wrong with being broken.

6. Do You Have Any Other Projects On The Go? What Is Your Writing Process Like? Do You Have Any Genres of Writing or Reading that You Prefer?

I’m planning on writing a fiction book called Project Rebirth. I’ve no details other than that because I hardly know what the book is about myself. 😛 For me, writing is painful.Writing is life. WHAT WAS I THINKING WRITING THAT?!! Editing is painful. Editing is life. Rinse and repeat.

Fantasy is my FAVORITE genre. None of this 21st-century teen smut fantasy romance. I mean classy fantasy like Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart series or Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling or The Ranger’s Apprentice booksI prefer these types of books so much more than teen romance novels.

“I hope that by being open about my own experiences with mental health challenges and triumphs, I can give others the strength to do the same. There’s nothing wrong with having a bad day, month, or year. There’s nothing wrong with having things that keep you up at night. There’s nothing wrong with being broken.” Jasminder Bains

7. Do You Have Any Helpful Tips for Other Writers? Is There Anything Else You’d Like to Share Pertinent to this Interview?

Keep writing. It’s the only way you get better (and shameless). Also, I want to fight the negative stigmas and stereotypes around mental health because it’s vastly misunderstood and generalized which is dangerous for everyone.

8. What Are Your Three Favorite Blogs You Follow Of Any Kind?

“Pain”

By Jasminder Bains

August 26, 2016

*****

What’s this? My insides feel like they’re tearing apart.

Something’s wrong, I should take some medication.

Something’s wrong, it’s 3 A.M. and I’m awake again. Did I ever fall asleep? I feel like I’m dying.

I’m frozen, I feel like screaming, is this really real?

Maybe this is the dream I have to wake up from, I don’t remember falling asleep so maybe I never woke up.

Something’s wrong, it’s 4 A.M. and I’m still here. I should just close my eyes, I wouldn’t be able to sleep if it was appendicitis….would I?

Something’s wrong, it’s only 7 A.M. and I’m already awake. No, mum, don’t leave for work just yet. There’s a patient lying here in bed who needs to be seen.

Mum is gone. My brother needs my phone for school. It’s low on battery because I stared blankly at music videos and funny vines for half the night unable to react thanks to the burning sensation in my stomach.

Dad wants to know what’s going on so I spill my guts on him. It’s time to try another medication, stay hydrated, and ride things out.

Mum says book an appointment if it doesn’t get better. I wonder if it will get better.

I’m a statue, unmoving and emotionless. I thought today was yesterday. Guess my brain didn’t register that I ever went to sleep.

Should I feel crooked that this pain is now who I am? I don’t want to do anything let alone go the hospital. It could be nothing. Just like me.

Dad wants me to make him lunch if I’m able. Fine. The pain is mostly gone and I can wait 10 minutes to pass out.

There are two types of naps: the kind that make you feel worse than before, but you know you had no choice, and the kind that make you feel energized. Mine was the latter. Maybe it’s because I slept two hours instead of 20 minutes. Oh well. At least the pain’s almost gone.

All I’ve had to eat today is half a bagel and a tin of Chobani yogurt. I should eat something else. A salad sounds divine only I’m not sure if I’m strong enough to eat the croutons and leaves yet. Only one way to find out. Verdict: I can chew a crouton. I can’t chew a spinach leaf. I’ll just have a burrito.

Something’s wrong, it’s been 18 hours since I laid awake in bed screaming in my head and I’m doing it again. Except this time in a chair with a plate of food in front of me. Forget it. I’m not eating if it’s gonna sting this bad. Time to take some more medication.

I don’t want to be a physical embodiment of pain, I want my life back. I want to feel joy again, I want to listen to music that lifts me up again, I want to write a blog post ahead of time again, I want to have faith again, I want to feel healthy again, I want to have both feet planted firmly on the ground again, I want to be me again.

~Live Boundless.

Enchanting child in slumber keep,

Red hair surrounds you as you sleep.

I wait for you to wake from your dreams,

No longer a porcelain doll preened.

*****

A wedding gown white lace so frothy,

Mother hoped your match was lofty.

That you’d found your life partner,

Your prince, your man, for life to start.

*****

But day by day you grew sad,

When pressed with his kisses ran.

Empty feeling inside you grew,

Like a butterfly away flew.

*****

Mischievous child, pain grew,

His fist at your face straight-on flew.

Hiding the bruises with powder,

Not even concealer shrouds

*****

Pride vital to you, tiny doll,
Escaped; no one to catch your fall.
Fly in dreams with delicate wings,

Winter ends, it’s soon your spring.

*****

Gather your courage –call it off;

Don’t marry him, don’t be soft.

In front of the crowd, show each cut,

Let them see bruises, you must.

*****

So they know an abuser,

Isn’t good enough, he’s a loser.

He broke your velvet wings,

Your sanity held by strings.

*****

But it was too late even then,

The lake too close; so your end.

Now you float, butterfly who swims,

Eternity of light your win.

*****

We tried to save a doll of glass,

But on death she shattered, passed.

Down below the water’s dark depth,

She’s tranquil, free; although, she leapt.

*****

Mind too distorted, destroyed,

Lover’s hands threw her like a toy.

World tough; his madness changed them both,

In Heaven she smiles free to float.

*****

He mourns her death each day, each drink,

Pretty soon his rage him too sinks.

Accidents happen to the unaware,

She pulled him in, drowned his despair.

Notable Quotes February Part One #quotes #pinterest

Well, January has passed already. For me, it feels like it’s still right after Christmas. However, I won’t complain when the winter flies by fast — the sooner it flies by, the warmer it will be in Alberta.

But this too depends on several little ground hogs tomorrow, all who we do not really know if they’ve seen their shadow. So we’ll see, as for now some quotes to make you think. Cheers!

Poem: Free Verse – Thoughts of the Mockingjay #amwriting #poetry #fiction #symbolic

Credit: Wikia

———

Mockingjay, pretty bird or elegant deadly queen?

A woman, a creature of dystopia and mythology

If there’s one bird to be, it would be a Mockingjay

Though I know they’re imaginary,

Mockingjays are real as symbols of courage.

Birds which don’t break, they carry on;

Nature outlasting outlandish experiments,

Reinventing, Mother Earth evolving and re-working,

What humans would call a mistake;

Yet these Jays cannot be hidden away, they’re fierce warriors risen.

——

As a Mockingjay, could I fly close to the sun?

Icarus (I think) burned off his majestic wings doing such a deed,

I’d think a celestial queen of Mockingjays is smarter

She’s a stealthy bird whose whistle, repeats any tune heard,

Her mimickery can be confusing to her enemy.

A Mockingjay queen, would keep her scars hidden,

Safe beneath feathers which float, as hope;

Now fuzz, falling furiously as she grows, dropping downy —

Fast, no longer a chick adorned with puffiness

Now a full-blown black and white glory who sings life’s story,

The story of pain, betrayal, and loss;

Your average adventure and most tantalising tale.

Oh, what a Mockingjay can truly be,

When her heads adorned by sunlight and truth,

Choosing her battles and using her melody

The Melody you’re humming to yourself.

The sweetest songs of tears, quicksilver and liquid gold,

Molten metal glimmering

She burns with fire in her soul, though she is no mythical Phoenix;

Yet she rises from the ashes of society and science

She repeats your tunes, the echoes throughout her wild lands.

——

—–

You’ll never catch a Mockingjay, there’s wrath in her footprints,

Her anger caused, ignites an inner flame brilliant.

She’ll swoop from above and end you below,

The dignified woman, no longer laughing,

Going to battle, her war song a trill

The Mockingjay flies her wings fluid, her form grace designed.

A legendary bird of modern times,

Survival of the fittest crossing genetics;

Nature re-designs better than a science lab of horrors

Mockingjay is more than bird she is the huntress

The symbolic warrior of Ancient Greece and Rome – Artemis;

Bow with blazing pyrotechnics and lethal skill, pointed at her kill.

She lives and she dreams of the day, the war is long ended,

Where revenge and the cold stone hearted have no meaning.

Her desire is the melody so beautiful it thrills and heals

Enraptures a soul with clearly sung words.

She’s a warrior with golden platted lashes, winged at her pray;

A sultry seductress and and goddess flying free.

Mockingbird walks, she sways, feathers flocked close,

She’s as precious as the sparrow, calling lonely for her love.

She’d scarred, her heart torn

So strong but in need of help most of all.

Even symbols of strength such as her,

Who mimick a fictitious tune with ease;

Need more than survival to hope for.

She needs more than, a gilded bird cage.

“Maybe love isn’t something that comes full circle. It just ebbs and flows, in and out just like the people in our lives” – Colleen Hoover, It Ends With Us

——-

Sometimes we think, it’s easy to manage to–

Balance the flow of our lives, each passage,

Of words and wonders we travel down fast.

Of memories, dreams curling blissfully through.

Of laughter, lovereason to again bloom,

Beyond the memories trapping us, lasting;

Never completely leaving until they pass,

In moments they choose, new whispers approve;

The coming of the dawn, when slumber breaks,

Though we’re scarred and hollow, gloves of lace

Will hide the marks of yesterday; fashion

A hug giving warmth, with new love, sweet dreams.

Yesterday fades, sparks today’s gentle stream

Brings reassurance, your arms hold me dear

Interview With Jade M. Wong

Welcome back to my biweekly interview series. I hope you all had an amazing holiday and I would like to start the New Year off right with an interview from the sweet and gifted Jade M. Wong. Her blog is called: Jade M. Wong – Writer At Heart. Fangirl by DNA. Struggling Human Until Further Notice.

jade-m-wong
Jade M. Wong

1. Jade, Please Tell Us About Yourself?

I’m a New York City girl named Jade M. Wong. In short, I’m a writer in my heart, a fan-girl by DNA, and a struggling human until further notice. I’m often up until 4:00 am at night battling inconvenient words and fantastical stories. If  I were a gazillionaire, I wouldn’t buy a mansion, but a cozy apartment in every city I love. In the meantime, I make do with cozy corners across the internet-sphere.

2. When Did You Start Writing and Blogging and What Does It Mean To You? Why Do You Write?

I’ve been writing and blogging on and off for as long as I can remember. But life has a way of kicking my butt. It’s only this year that I’ve finally been writing and blogging regularly. I’d like to think that ‘life’ and I are now reluctant dance partners and not bitter enemies.

I write because its a way to put myself onto the the page with words. This helps me when I’m trying to revise my writing. I learn where in a particular piece, I am writing badly and where I am writing well. This is a kind of therapy for me and medicine for whatever I’m dealing with in life at the moment.

“I’m often up until 4:00 am at night battling inconvenient words and fantastical stories.” – Jade M.Wong

3. Where Do You Find Your Inspiration and Motivation to Write? Is There a Time of Day You Most Enjoy Writing?

Figuratively speaking, I have a muse. She’s a little fairy with thin arms, tiny hands, a sarcastic sense of humor, and a brilliant mind. She’s been with me as long as I can remember, always sending me bits of inspiration at inconvenient times. As a result, I find inspiration in every moment of every day. Not writing, well, it’s simply unthinkable.

My favorite time to write is after the sun sets, when the world is asleep except for me and my muse, and I don’t have to worry about what tomorrow brings.

4. Do You Have Any Current Writing Projects? Can You Tell Us A Little About Them?

I’m currently working on a collection of poetry, as well as playing around with a novel idea (or two). I’ve noticed, the more I write, the more excited my muse becomes and the more ideas flow into my mind. Uncanny how this works, isn’t it?

My published works include a short story titled: Glow In The Dark Stars, which can be seen in The Ghouls’ Review, along with anything I may publish in the future.

:Figuratively speaking, I have a muse. She’s a little fairy with thin arms, tiny hands, a sarcastic sense of humor, and a brilliant mind. She’s been with me as long as I can remember . . .” – Jade M. Wong

5. Can You Briefly Describe The Process You Have Gone Through To Publish Your Writing? What Is Your Writing Process Like?

*Disclaimer: I am definitely not an expert in the world of publishing.*When it comes to publishing, I’ve found it most important to follow the guidelines for each individual magazine I submit to, and to keep my fingers crossed.

My writing process is one part on-the-go and one part wrapped up under my covers like a burrito. During the day as I’m commuting, I write a lot on my phone. When I get home at night, I grab my laptop, get comfortable on my bed with a cup of tea, and write until my muse falls asleep.

6. Do You Have a Preference For Certain Areas of Writing or Reading Styles or Genres?

My favorite genres to write and read are fantasy, romantic-comedy, young adult fiction, and cozy mysteries, but I’m always willing to try new genres. For example, I recently fell in love with a memoir, Lucky by Alice Sebold, despite the fact my whole life up until then, I tended to steer away from nonfiction.

7. Do You Have Any Helpful Advice to Give to Other Writers?

The advice I have to pass along comes originally from a writers more successful than myself. Who better to learn from, right?

J.K. Rowling, the author of the iconic Harry Potter series says: “Sometimes, you have to get your writing done in spare moments here and there.”

Many of us dream of having long days filled with nothing but writing. Perhaps one day, our dreams can be a reality. Right now, however, most of us have jobs we need to pay the bills but we also realize words don’t write themselves. Sometimes, the best time for a writer to write is in the small seconds we have between responsibilities.

8. Is There Anything Else You Want To Share With Us, Pertinent to Your Writing or Yourself?

To everyone trying to be writers, artists, doctors, or architects (etc.) I hope we never give up trying to achieve our dreams.

To everyone trying to change the world, one moment of bravery at a time, I hope we remember love will always trump hate. The world will always needs dreamers as much as it needs doers.

To everyone trying to be themselves, I hope we remember that we are always worth it.

“Many of us dream of having long days filled with nothing but writing. Perhaps one day, our dreams can be a reality. Right now, however, most of us have jobs we need to pay the bills but we also realize words don’t write themselves. Sometimes, the best time for a writer to write is in the small seconds we have between responsibilities.” – Jade M. Won

9. Please Share With Us Your Top Three Favorite Blogs?

In no particular order:

  1. Cooking With A Wallflower – This is a cooking blog, hosted by a lady named Andrea. I love her recipes and all her wallflower finds!
  2. Terrible Minds – This is the blog of Chuck Wendig. He’s a novelist, screenwriter, and game designer. He blogs about everything from writing to pop culture, and he always makes me laugh. He also uses a lot of swear words and other not-safe-for-kids language, so that may deter you, but I hope it doesn’t.
  3. I’ve also ‘met’ several bloggers on WordPress whom I consider friends, even if I have yet to meet any of them. Their blogs are my favorites, because they are so dear to me. A few of them include: A Reading Writer, Doodles and Scribbles, and Melinda Kucsera, but there are many others!

[Poetry] Everything To Lose

By Jade M. Wong

What was it like to love him?
To answer that question, you need to ask me another,
What was it like to know him?
The man I knew was not known to any other.
He was shy and he was kind,
And he struggled relentlessly with a broken mind.
He showed the world a face that was empty
And he saved his shattered soul for me.
Loving him was loving those pieces
It was taking his soul and smoothing out the creases
It was loving a man so in tune with my needs
He’d rather my heart be whole while his own bleeds.
Why did you love him if it was so hard?
Hard? Loving him was easy, as easy as breathing,
As easy as letting the light in, healing,
Because loving him was embracing both the light and the dark,
It flowed like a stream and like hot fire, it sparked.
Why did you love him?
I loved him because I loved myself
Because I deserved a love like nothing else
I loved him because I had the right to choose
And together with him, we had everything to lose.

Poem: Free Verse – “A Congested Mind” #poetry #amwriting

http://www.pinterest.com

——–

They call it the unknown

The future lying before you.

No matter if you’re psychic,

No one knows what happens.

There are varied scenarios,

Ways it could play out,

But truly we don’t know the future

It’s a mystery creeping forward,

And it pulls us along on our knees.

Whether we go willingly,

Or go kicking and screaming;

Time marches in to the beat,

Of father time’s own drum.

****

I don’t know what’s coming,

I know worrying won’t help.

I think sometimes I try to give advice,

Reassuring myself in kind.

There are bright possibilities,

Hoping people become,

More kind than they are mean to each other.

Pray people look-out for each other,

But sometimes I think society is self-centred.

I admit to such fault and others too,

But I’m still fearful;

When I think of a year or two ahead,

I’m afraid what if it’s not the right plan?

Experience deftly taught me,

Plans are dim outlines of reality.

Mostly, life goes where it goes

And God only knows where or why.

Leading us through dark valleys,

Into trenches with piercing bullets flying.

Into classrooms with screaming kids,

A gunmen on the loose.

He leads us through to people,

Whose power makes one nervous.

How even democracy isn’t safe —

A tyrant could rule all.

Maybe the world will surprise me,

But I fear for the little person.

*****

My own personal fears weigh heavy,

Though others bear pains greater.

Of lawyers and cases,

Of corruption and crime.

Those crimes we deem terrible;

Those crimes brushed under the rug.

Greed and all those other sins,

Abhorred but freely ignored.

Though I can never say what’s worse —

My own flaws or imperfections

Or those I’m faced with.

Stress shows through cracks,

Egg yokes running.

No one likes raw eggs except in cookie dough

The future is overwhelming.

But at least they’ll still be cookie dough,

And I don’t know why —

I’m particular and observant

Why I know it’s better to be alone

Than be truly alone with another.

Why I wait for that spark

Why I wait for the morning dawn.

A smile in his eyes which is genuine

Wherever he is.

But maybe happiness is a puppy

Paws following me on the hardwood,

Barks at random sounds.

The glory of a puppy skidding down —

The off leash trail and wheeling;

Turning around to jump on me,

To pick her up when she’s tired.

*****

My bones are stiff and ridged

My dreams fall to despair

So many books and writers,

And not anyone can compare

How to rise above the masses,

Or fill your own niche contented.

But perhaps one could be something

Success in small moments.
Afraid and weighted

Need to cry, tears unshed,

Because disease is cruel.
Even if Heaven is the end of the tunnel,

So many words are left unsaid

The timing of it all, does it work?

I feel alienated

Though I try hard to keep the connection

It’s all in your planning Lord;

So must I say, your will be done.

———

She used to be green, envious of those,

Who moved with more than their clever placed prose.

Green burned within her eyes, she fought to know,

More than the forest invading souls; chose —

To see beyond green, jealousy which rose.

Stronger person, tougher girl who fought those,

Who placed her in such tight square-pegged green holes.

Beyond emotion to soft grace she rose.

——

Envy tears apart, so green and seething

A monster growing her sharp teeth, teething;

A vindictive being, behind scenes teasing.

No more green for her, she dreams in light blues,

No more green, peaceful serenity cued;

Jealousy hits door, tosses emerald shoes.

To where do car rides lead?

Wherever we may go.

Let’s ride the night out,

Let the city lights glow,

Wrap us in their electronic warmth.

—-

To where do car rides lead?

Any direction you may go.

Don’t sit and wait,

Put your foot on the break,

Start the car let’s go.

—–

To where do car rides lead?

Adventures waiting to be towed,

Come along as the lights gleam,

The city is ours,

Our time, our night, to explore.

——

To where do car rides lead?

Neon signs, the horizon beams,

Driving all night,

No where to go, our journey —

In this broken church, our city.

—–

To where do car rides go?

They lead us to flickering dreams.
