Poem – Free Verse (Audio) – “Just Ask” #amwriting #poetry #audio

———

You might not understand,
I don’t know how to say,

It hurts when I’m not invited,

When you forget me anyways.
I know I’m quiet,

I know I’m ill,

I know transportation can be difficult,

But often, I can work it out.

I’d rather you ask,

Than just assume,

I can’t make it,

Or attend at all,

I’d rather you said something

Than nothing at all.

Instead I see photographs.

And I was never involved.

Most times this doesn’t bother me,

Only when it happens,

More and more.

When I see,

Many friends and acquaintances,

I had no idea at all.

I don’t think it’s selfish

For me to say ask.

I just want to be involved,

To see my friends and others too.

To have a social life,

Not to be judged

Deemed boring or not thought about.

It hits a place inside me,

Where I feel disappointed,

I feel a bit destroyed.

Do I disappear from your minds so readily?

That you didn’t even think to ask,

Even if it’s last minute.

Even if you thought I wouldn’t go,

You should’ve given me the choice

Cause it really feels–

You don’t think of me much.

As if I’m a problem too big to deal with,

Like I ruin the fun.

Your good time.

It’s not fair —

But such is life,

Because I’m chronically broken,

I’m not my fun-self anymore.

I’m just me,

And I thought we were friends,

But that means,

Now and again,

Think about me.

Let me come along,

Even if you think I’ll say no.

It might surprise you,

I’m coping well.

Put yourself in my place.

But I’ve learned the hard way,

To never expect.

Because if you count on people,

A great many of them,

They let you down.

Caught up in their own lives;

BFF’s aren’t always forever,

And sometimes I hate,

Feeling alone,

I’d rather you asked,

Then assumed

I wasn’t able to go.

Unknown

Marvin couldn’t believe this place he’d woken up in. He was eight-years-old in this world, but he wore a space suit. Not the fake dress-up clothes space suit, but an authentic one as the astronauts who flew to the space station wore.

He was on a planet which wasn’t earth. It was night and the blue-grey sky was alight with stars which lit Martin’s path on dark-green grass like terrafirma.

Marvin wanted to feel the grass but he knew if he did, he wouldn’t be able to breathe on this planet.

The most fascinating feature of this environment was that the sea was one with the sky. Marvin wasn’t sure how this was possible, but earth-like sea creatures floated above him. He laughed as a blue whale swam past, stars glittering around the creature.

Marvin was amused to see starfish stuck in the sky, as if they were actual stars. Marvin reached for a starfish and the world he was in dissolved around him.

When he awoke, Marvin was thirty-eight-years-old and lying in a hospital bed. His wife Lorna sat by his bed, grasping his hand:

“Marvin you’re back. It’s been a scary forty-eight hours.”He couldn’t speak, it hurt to move.

In truth, Marvin was disappointed to see Lorna, to be alive. What kind of accident was he in which he was hurt so awfully?  He was painfully drowsy and Martin allowed his mind to slip back into his dream world.

He was a boy once again and in his astronaut suited hand, he was holding a starfish glowing bright orange and wriggling. He felt such hope and peace in this dream world.

Marvin did not struggle with his drowsiness, to stay in the real world, where Lorna and severe pain waited.

As he drifted off to explore his dreamscape, he heard the beeps of his heart rate go flat.

Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner: No Piano Mom.

Thanks to Roger Shipp for hosting FFftPP.

———

Mom, I don’t want to play piano,

But you force me every week, no!

You say “it can’t be that hard,”

My piano playing, will never go far.

You think I’ll get better when you make me play,

I practice, fumbling the wrong keys — you say:

“My boy he’s going to be a musician,

My Alex is going to go far, be a physician;

Playing the piano helps with math and science skills,

Playing these notes, he learns to read music: I’ve chills,

One day he’ll be a musician and a doctor,

How could a mother want anything more.”

So I pound out the notes, keeping my hand like a ball,

Ignoring your wince when my fingers stumble and fall.

I want to do something fun,

I want to play soccer and run.

I want to be an astronaut, or maybe a fireman,

A hero who saves people, maybe Spider-Man?

I’m not sure yet what I want to be,

I don’t like math or piano you see.

But my printing is good; I handwrite well,

My typing is fast; in my stories, witches cast spells.

I like to read; I’m quicker than other children.

Are you listening to me? Or yelling certain —

I should be practicing piano, something you decided for me.

Never asking how I felt as years passed by and I still played off key.

I couldn’t memorize the music; it was tedious,

I preferred writing stories, characters mischievous.

How your face dropped,

Now you never talk to me; you stopped.

Because I didn’t become a musician or a doctor,

I used my talents and your boy Alex plays professional soccer.

Writing stories in the paper about sports and other topics, I glean.

I didn’t meet your standards; I lived my own dreams.
