They told me it was easy — that a wolf was born to run,

Never once did they talk about innocence, a scattering of light shunned.

When all the darkness mustered, and drove forth as Roman armies.

They told me I had to do it, but my frail hands shook.

My eyes peeped through my lashes, venom running through my veins.

For no one told me about the spilling,

The loss of life and gore; men now faceless, missing limbs.

Life left them in a quickening, and I peeked through the brambles;

Thorns stabbed into my paws, the moon haunted by shadows as if it too, hid.

I wandered around the copse, limbs prickling and tongue mute.

An anthemyst sky drew forth night, a small end to battle; and to camp for today they returned.

No side was bad, no side was good; each believed their god gave glory;

But I was pup who lay on crumpled leaves, moaning in the blood-scented air.

I was but an observer and the scenes were obtrusive; never failed to numb me.

They overcame my sleep, no place for pups as down to sleep.

And in the night I heard them weep, beg for life and help;

For moms to hold them close, for lovers to sing one more note.

And the night was a cacophony, until death silenced some;

And others fell into fevered sleep.

Yet, the crimson morning came with an ominous bells knell; I failed to close my eyes all night.

The clashing of metal, the tangy smoke of guns,

Invaded my nightmares as the half-dead lay silent, if only to live through one more day.

And a tiny wolf crept forth, and through the carnage lunged.

She lengthened each foot and grew tall, silvery fur huge snow-white teeth clasped, titanium claws split bone.

And she knew in the end all had been lost, but she was born to run — to hunt;

She was the goddess of war, and hers was a warrior’s life or death to give.

It never mattered that through each year,

She was still a babe crying in the darkness numb, half-dead after battle.

Half-dead of heart to survive such gore; so, she let loose her demons,

And the fates chose the victors, if there ever are any?

She knew too well as cherub tears fell, nothing was just or fair in war — suffering was the only assurance.

Suffering and the fairy-man’s boat rowing, as if he had all time,

All the time in the world, because he did; and she howled as the dusk once again swept.

She lay down in the copse, a wolf pup again; goddess of war without a pack.

Lady whose job was to perpetually morn, to pick and choose, and forever feel the pain.

Knife and gun, nightmares and terrors, for peace was an infinity — the only dream she had.

PhotoChallenge/ Sunday Writing Prompt: A Fairy Tale with a Bad Ending: Maleficent #amwriting #fiction #photochallenge

Thanks to NEKNEERAJ of MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting this week’s photochallenge. I’m combining prompts with The Sunday Writing Prompt of MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie and using the title prompt tale: A Fairytale with a Very Bad End.

Credit: Jeff Simpson

Maleficent stared from her dim dungeon-like castle eyeing King Stefan’s daughter, Aurora, playing in a wide open field.

She whispered to Crow, “They’re supposed to be watching her those three dim-witted fairies. When I was a good fairy, I watched my charges closely. How foolish they are, I could end her life now.”

Crow cawed, “She’s but ten years old and it isn’t her fault Stefan is her father. She doesn’t know what he did to you to become king.”

“Quiet, Crow. I’m thinking.”

“You think a great deal but never do much. Aurora knows what her fate is, those ignorant fairies told her. Now, whenever she can, she escapes to this field to play. She has no care for danger or death. Sometimes she sits and stares into the sky crying.”

“Why should I be merciful to her because she knows she will prick her finger and die in six-years? I owe her nothing. She is a means to an end.”

Crow cocked his head. “She is not responsible for her father’s crimes anymore than your parents were responsible for leaving you alone to rule the Marsh; your parents did not intend to die. Aurora, does not want to die either. Why not raise her yourself and find a way to undo the curse? Simply losing her will hurt Stefan deeply as the queen can’t have more children.”

Maleficent pinched the bridge of her nose. “I cannot undo such a powerful curse and I will not do Stefan any favours despite Aurora’s innocence. He raped me Crow, I was helpless. He cut off my wings. I will not save the girl.”

“You may change your mind yet. You have watched her for years and have become fond of her. You hate that she’s putting herself in peril now.”

“Fond?”

“Yes, you have this soft smile on your face when you watch Aurora. You never smile that way except with her.”

Maleficent’s voice went cold. “In that case . . . ” she pointed her wand at the blond beauty. Heart beating loudly in her ears, she struck the small girl down. Aurora death was instant and a single tear slipped down the dark fairy’s cheek.

“Now, you see, Crow? I have ended her life. I’m not attached to her and we will bury Aurora’s body in the Marshes. Aurora’s early death will bring Stefan greater pain. He will live his life not knowing what happened to his daughter. His queen will die in grief.”

Tears dropped as diamonds from Crows’ coal-black eyes and wouldn’t stop. “I do not think Stefan is the most evil being in the kingdom. You are the person most full of evil. Just as he lost his heart to become king and hurt you, you have ended the life of an innocent child and are no better.”

“I meant for you to truly act as Aurora’s Godmother — not to kill her. You should’ve been the one to guard and protect her; I thought you loved her.”

“Love is as treacherous as running off alone to a field . . .”

Crow’s caw was forlorn. “Aurora could’ve had a new beginning with us, but I cannot serve a fairy whose heart has become black with revenge, with blood on her hands from an innocent’s death. How far you have fallen, Maleficent.”

“Stefan is not responsible for your evil deeds; you are responsible for your own crimes.”

Crow bowed once and flew away forever. Maleficent was left alone and inside her chest her heart’s ache was perpetual.

Flash Fiction for the Aspiring Writer: Poem – “It’s a Fact of Life” #amwriting #poetry #flashfiction

Thanks to Priceless Joy for hosting FFftAW September 5, 2017.

Excuse the length. I saw the photograph and it fit my poem well. Since I’m still two weeks behind I don’t know that it matters 🙂

——-

When I visit here,

It’s a fact of life.

Blood drawn with tiny needles.

Some days they sting,

Stringing out two seconds.

Other days, the needle doesn’t register.

It was a fact of life,

I had to visit here each week,

For the first six months.

Then, every other week,

Now each month the rest of my life.

It’s a fact of life,

So I don’t pay much attention.

Facing away when the needle grazes,

The same ‘good’ vein.

Blueish-purple in my left arm,

Silver-violet threads of blood vessels.

Some months these needles bruise,

Leave my skin raw and red;

But If I’ve someone skilled,

There’s a slight indentation.

Each month —

Babies crying concertos.

An ominous feeling in the air.

They’ve no choice —

But to know sharp pain.

A poke stinging eternities of fire,

For a wink in time.

Wailing and —

The waiting room patients’ sigh.

Then silence follows,

The miniature massacre.

Everyone checking, rechecking watches,

Pulling out phones.

Waiting for that sickening needle,

Shuffling in seats,

Legs crossed and uncrossed.

Glossy magazine pages turned,

With frequent frustration.

Toddlers running,

Mothers trying to calm them,

Hushing their lively squeaks.

I’m used to having blood drawn,
Turning my head,

Focusing on some object,

Or a distant thought.

There’s persistent pain as the needle pulls,
My blood into the tube.

Six to nine tubes today,

Blood annexed for annual work.

These tests burn —

Worse than the tattoo artist’s etching.

Sketching out the black lines,

Worse than her needle,

Grazing repeatedly,

Skin with vibrant colours.

Back and forth movements,
Calming and hushing,

Knowing what to expect and where.

Conversation, music soothing,

Then, the artist is done.

Her needles leaving,

A work of art behind.

But the blood test needles ache worse.

Similar to the last flu shot,

Some years not felt at all.

Other years a poke that —

Throbs all day.

Despite praying the pharmacist,

Will slide the needle in,

Not deliver a death blow.

Droplets of bright blood plop,

To the stark white floor.

She laughs, this never happens.

Her mouth turns downward,

Because you grimace,

Squish your eyes shut counting the seconds;

Until the hurt dulls.

She wonders why you wince,

Why you’re so sensitive.

Says the swelling will fade,

You’ll live,

It’s a fact of life.

It’s a matter of proper training,

Slipping any needle in gently.

Not jabbing and mincing,

A persons veins or muscles.

Yet still, a fact of life.
But I remember being six and crying,

Fighting my mother,

She was angry.

Because I saw the needle,

And refused.

Today, the blood test needles are thinner.

Adults can ignore them, right

Grit their teeth while the bloods,

Ripped away, into a tube.

It’s a fact of life.

That some things are sharper and dig holes deeper,

Than blood tests, flu shots, or tattoos.

There is greater pain flowing from our insides,

If only the hurt could be drawn out as blood.

If happiness, no worries, and no obligations —

Was all that remained behind.

If only —

The tattoo artists colours,

Garunteed you with fantastic health.

And flu shots didn’t speak of fragility;

Only the best humors in our blood.

Gossamer strings supporting dreams.

100 Word Wednesday: “Heart Break” #amwriting #flashfiction

Everything had to be perfect. Kayla didn’t want this to be a one time affair. It was 1:00 p.m., and Tye had awoken hearing noises in Kayla’s kitchen.

He lumbered in, taking a seat at the island where Kayla had prepared a tray with ‘hair of the dog.’

“Morning Tye, you probably have a killer hang over at your age,” Kayla teased.

Tye drank both drinks from the tray. “Feeling much better now. Where’s your brother? Did he crash here too?”

“We, no Tye, it was just us. Christian stayed at Mimi’s last night.”

“He’s a lucky guy. Mimi’s a fine woman.”

Kayla frowned, “What about last night? Aren’t you a ‘lucky guy’ too, Tye?”

“What about it?”

“Does it mean anything to you? You told me you loved me.”

Tye was silent, “From the moment I saw you in that short black dress . . . I don’t remember much. I drank a lot. It can’t mean anything, Kayla, even if I’ve always had a thing for you. You’re Christian’s sister, he’d kill me.”

“Not if you actually loved me. If you felt the way I feel about you.”

“Doesn’t matter –”

“It does matter because I’m twenty eight-years old, a grown woman. If last night meant nothing, just say it. Because I’m damn sure you’re lying when you say you don’t remember.”

Tye rubbed his face his eyes dazed. He lumbered back to the bedroom and began dressing.

He wouldn’t look at her and Kayla confronted him, catching him off guard. She pushed him hard and kept pushing, attempting to get a reaction from Tye when he grabbed both her hands holding her still.

“I’ve loved you since I was fourteen. You may have not loved me then, but I’ve seen the way you’ve looked at me since I turned twenty-five. You like me a lot and you know it,” Kayla cried.

She struggled, but Kye wouldn’t let go of her hands. He pressed his lips to hers, brushing them back and forth before pulling back. “This can’t happen again, Kayla. You know that, I’m engaged.”

” Lisa doesn’t love you. You don’t owe that harpy anything.”

“I do owe it to her, we’ve been together five years.”

Tyler brushed his thumb against her lips and let go of Kayla. He left her bedroom to put on his dress shoes at the front door. “I wish I could be with you. But Lisa’s pregnant. If I don’t marry her she’ll never let me see my daughter, ever.”

Kayla blanched. She tried not to burst into a crying jag as she held her throat feeling her breath constrict. She gazed at Tye, “Please tell me I wasn’t just some girl you slept with.”

“I wasn’t that drunk, Kayla. I lied. Last night meant the world, but that’s why we have to both forget it.”

The door shutting echoed long after Tye left. Tears dripped down her cheeks as Kayla sat on the floor, a ferocious pain eating her alive inside as she wept.

Lords – “Liability”

——–

You’re a little much for me, see

See you’re a liability

Liabilities are costly

Liability, that’s you baby

Baby hurt me so much

Baby left me crying

Crying in the taxi

Crying until I reached home

Home, it’s what I though we had

Home, what’s one broken?

Broken I’m shattered

Broken, he doesn’t need to know

Knowing me, mistake were made

Knowing little, he couldn’t handle trying

Trying to dance in my storm

Trying not to be poisoned

Poison, he said that’s what I was

Poison, that’s what he is

He is poison destructive to me

He is the maker of harsh demands

Demands — I only meet my own now

Demands are so tiring

Tiring, he’s too hard to please

Tiring, he says I’m diseased

Diseased, he’s the one, making ‘us’ decay

Diseased, the man I knew gone

Gone amd there’s no more dancing

Gone, no more love in the dark

Darkness, I’m alone swaying

Dark and alone, dancing alone

Alone too much for him

Alone I’m still dangerous

Dangerous truth: he treats me as a toy

Dangerous and too boring

Boring after doing exciting tricks

Boring after our perfect summer

Summer in my heart hurts

Summer’s turned cold

Cold eating me alive,

Cold cause, you’re all gone

Gone so I’m on my own

Gone, I accept I’m a liability

Liabilities must be forgotten

Liabilities must be shed

Shed so as not to him expose.

Forgotten so I’m never loved.

Three Line Tales: Soccer for 3-Year-Olds #amwriting #3LineTales

The gitter of the morning sun touches the dew, the liquid grass blades absorb it, deprived of water, sucking it back like tequila shots. The little ones arrive, talking loudly and shrieking; there are tears, there are runny noses, and there are giggles of happiness. The three-year-olds line up and parents help them do their tasks; Practicing kicking the ball into the net, running here and there, being the goalie, and following each other closely, a pack of pigeons squawking; all is well until Jordy pushes Chris and the toddlers aren’t afraid, piling on top of each other with delighted screams.

“Clementine anxiously waited for the 5:40 out of the city, wondering if he would be on board.” It head been two-years since she’d seen Philip. He’d been sent out to fight the Nazis in France. She’d faithfully written to him but Philip hadn’t been able to send many letters back.

After the harrowing footage she’d seen of soldiers fighting on the beaches of Normandy, Clementine wondered if her Philip would be himself; how could he? The train arrived and she continued waiting.

Seconds later Philip was holding her so tightly she couldn’t breath. He cried into her neck,”I thought I’d never see you again.”

“I had no doubt you would,” Clementine whispered back, stroking Philip’s hair as his tears dried.

It was almost as if he’d never been gone; in each other’s arms, they were both home.

The sky was falling in large drops of blue glass. The weeping willow was the first to notice so she cried. Her tears gathered creating a river with the drops from the sky.

A mighty rabbit hopped by, he was a bit confused as to where all this water was coming from.

“Ms. Willow why are you crying a river?” he asked.

“I’m a weeping willow and the sky is falling haven’t you noticed?”

The rabbit nodded, “Well yes of course it falls. Each time it rains, snows, or hails, the sky falls.”

“You need to stop crying. You’re going to drown everyone in your tears. I’m the  king of all animals, you better listen to me.”

“Why?”

“My friend is a massive blue ox named Babe. His friend named Paul chops down trees for a living.”

The willow immediately stopped weeping and the rabbit’s triumphant roar was heard throughout the forest.

Photo Prompt: Poetry – Ballad – “Jolly Sailor Bold” (Reworked) #amwriting #poetry #mermaids

Thanks to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting this prompt, focusing on having a Refrain in a song/poem/prose; some kind of repeating phrase. Also, I’m including and reworking lyrics to “My Jolly Sailor Bold,” from Pirates of The Carribean Four: On Stranger Tides, using Disney’s words as a Refrain or chorus and my own for the verses.

See HERE for original lyrics.

——

Once there was a lass and she,

Didn’t fit at home, said Mum:

“Be gone girl,” so she went, roamed,

Wandering the earth, she’d hum.

—-

They say she was a fey girl with,

Eyes gleaming like stormy seas,

She cared little much for love,

Little much did life, her please.

—-

One evening in the moonlight,

Her fair voice sang a song.

A mournful melody cried,

For her jolly sailor longed.

“My heart is pierced by Cupid

I disdain all glittering gold

There is nothing can console me

But my jolly sailor bold.”

—–

They say he swam away,

In shipping built his good name.

His ship sailed around the world,

He recalled his love, her games.

—–

She watched for him each sun –

Set, she went about each day.

Crying sadly for her sweetheart,

Sailor she feared lost and astray.

—-

He thought nothing of her tears,

No thoughts of her at all;

Coming home he brought a wife,

A final jump made girl fall

—-

Mermaids saved the young girl,

A woman-fish swam so free;

Sang out to foolish sailors,

“Come join me in the sea.”

—-

“My heart is pierced by Cupid

I disdain all glittering gold

There is nothing can console me

But my jolly sailor bold.”

—-

Poem: Free Verse – “Prayer for the Small Things” #amwriting #poetry #prayer

Credit: Saatchi Art – Thank God For Women Legs by Thomas Saliot

——–

Oh Lord, thank God for the small things,

The words and acts of kindness,

Which help me through the day.

Thank God for the small things,

Each day I’m fed,

I’ve many clothes to wear.

Thank you that I too can be generous

That you gave me a Mother who taught —

Her daughter to be thoughtful,

So I wouldn’t think only of myself.

And even when I’m hurt and crying

I can see a silver lining in that cloud.

*****

Lord, thank you for the small things,

A life I’m given to live

No matter how battered or bruised

You’re my armour and you never leave.

Your champions wage

Though the whirlpool may swallow;

You bring us through to the other side.

New blessings each day,

More than we need or want, or deserve

Thank you for the small things.

For earnings, for caring friends,

For a heart that doesn’t break when it’s bent

Thank you for love; however, small it was,

For those who hurt me,

So I knew then, what forgiveness was.

*****

Lord, oh for the small things,

That kindness could be formed in me,

To kill the badness, the jealousy

Thank you for keeping him safe,

For him not being my guy,

Though I pray for him still,

You keep him secure, alive —

I pray you give him faith

And draw us both close to you.

*****

Thank you my almost love,

Is not in the big picture.

I hope he sees his wealth,

His privilege comes,

Not only with acts of goodness

But faith in God, in Jesus —

From his heart

If I see him again —

Help me to not turn away but to repair

So much is your power,

You could change a man’s mind.

Help him see he is lost in the law,

He needs your grace to believe

*****

Thank you Lord, for the small things,

My family, my friends, those I detest.

My lost pets, my forgotten foes.

Every man I felt something special for,

For the ones who hurt me deep and cut in;

I didn’t bleed out and die inside.

I moved on, survived

I’m doing okay.

*****

Thank you I was born in this day and age

Not one-hundred something years ago or more.

For medical advances, social programs,

And people more understanding,

At least I hope

Thank you that one day, I’ll see you face to face,
Thank you Lord, for the small things,

For to me they’re very big.

My prayer I give and keep in my heart

For your omniscient presence,

For your healing,

Oh Lord, I ask and give thanks.
