Winter 2016/2017 Beauty Haul: Part One

Good Afternoon everyone. I’m back with some of my favourite beauty products I’ve tried since my Fall Beauty Haul. I hope you like the products and find some you can incorporate into your own beauty routine.

winter-brovwo-condintinong-primer-by-benefit
Benefit Cosmetics: Browvo Conditioning Primer (www.sephora.ca) – $36.00 CAN

1.Benefit Cosmetics: Browvo! Conditioning Primer – Nutrient Rich Primer for Fuller-Looking Brows –  (1.0 mL) – http://www.sephora.ca – $36.00 CAN

This wasn’t a product I went out and bought, but I received the full-sized product with a coupon code from Sephora. Its a product part of Benefit’s recently revamped brow line since brows have become a big deal these past two-years where makeup is concerned.

I haven’t used this product long, only a week, but I wanted to include it in the Beauty Haul. So far I enjoy the product and it makes my brows feel soft. You don’t have to wear other brow products on top of it. If you want, you can wear Browvo alone. Basically, Browvo’s a pen and you squeeze some of the conditioning product out. There is a soft rubber comb you can use to brush it on your eyebrows.

The biggest feature I think of this is product, is that it is conditioning so if you have sparse brows, this makes them appear “fuller, thicker, and healthier.” Browvo is a “nutrient rich” conditioning formula with “keratin” and “soy proteins.” These ingredients are known to help brows appear fuller.

For women who have either over-plucked their own brows or gone to places to have their brows waxed and had them waxed and shaped too thin for a long time, Browvo is fantastic product for you to try out. Also if you find the pencil or gel you are filling in your brows with doesn’t last, Browvo is a brow primer and will aid you in keeping your brow makeup in place.

My brows have always been on the fuller side so even though my brows feel nice when I put Browvo on, it’s not a product I would purchase because I don’t think its a product marketed to me but to women who have sparser brows. If I needed primer on my brows I would use my usual face primer which is POREfessional primer from Benefit.

2. Benefit Cosmetics: ka-Brow- Cream Gel Eyebrow Colour with Brush (1.0 g) -www.sephora.ca – $30.00 CAN

winter-benefit-ka-brow
Benefit Cosmetics: ka-Brow Cream Gel Brown Colour with Brush -www.spehora.ca – $30.00 CAN

On a different makeup order, I received a full-sized sample of Benefit’s of ka-Brow. I’ve been using it a few weeks and its a great product actually. Ka-Brow is a cream gel product you use to fill in your eyebrows, instead of a pencil or other brow products. I’ve never used a gel product on my eyebrows, so I was eager to try  ka-Brow out.

The lid comes of this product and you pull off the brush as well, to dip it into the brow gel container which is on the bottom of the product as you can see. It can be difficult to tell at first, how much of the gel you need to use to fill in your eyebrows. I found a little ka-Brow goes a long way. The brush is tiny and it’s easy to fill in your brow more naturally, with tiny strokes. Or to make your brows look more defined by using thicker swipes of ka-Brow on your eye brows.

The product promises to “fill,” “sculpt,” and “define brows.” You can build it from a “natural” look to a more “dramatic” one quite easily with ka-Brow as I mentioned. Ka-brow is also Waterproof and lasts 24 Hours.

I had never considered using a gel product such as ka-Brow to fill in my brows.I am quite happy to use a brow pencil which is soft but not too soft. I find  despite using ka- Brow, I require Benefit’s blond brow gel over top to set the product.

I’m undecided about using ka-Brow over a pencil such as an Anastasia Brow Pencil I’d been using before trying this product. Ka-Brow can accidentally be put on quite too thick and I don’t know how long it lasts compared to a brow pencil. A good brow pencil such as one from Anastasia, lasts me three-months. So I’ll see if this product lasts another couple of months.

There is nothing wrong with ka-Brow. It works well, and I chose the shade o1 Platinum for blonds and the colour is perfect; however, it’s up to you what products you prefer to use on your eyebrows and how much you can afford to spend on a brow product for how long it lasts.  I haven’t decided if I like this product enough to buy it again.

winter-loreal-voluminous-butterfly-intenza-wp
L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly INTENZA Waterproof Mascara -(www.ulta.com) – $8.99 US or at Shoppers Drug Mart $8.99 CAN on Sale.

3. L’Oreal Butterfly INTENZA Waterproof Mascara – Blackest Black 381 – (2.0 mL) – http://www.ulta.com – $8.99 US ( Also bought at Shopper’s Drug Mart for $8.99 CAN)

I admit, I’m a mascara junky. Out of all the products I use, mascara is the one I change the most often. My last one from Make Up Forever, I ended up loving in the end, except that the brush which covered every tiny lash, made mascara go all over my eye area and the mascara didn’t appear to have such a volumizing effect as I was hoping for. So for over top, I bought this L’Oreal mascara from Shoppers Drug Mart and it worked extremely well to use over top the Make Up Forever Mascara and fill out my eyelashes.

I find myself consistently going back to L’Oreal mascaras because they reliably, time and again, have well priced mascaras which do the same job as most mascaras in the $30.oo to $40.00 range.

For L’Oreal you are only paying around $10 CAN for their mascara. It’s a shame when you buy an expensive mascara and hate it. But if you don’t like a cheaper mascara it isn’t such a big deal if it doesn’t work out. The only difference I can say between say L’Oreal mascaras and expensive mascaras such as Dior, is that mascaras such as Dior, have fantastic black or brown colour pigment.

However, I do tend to receive many beauty samples, especially in mascara. I will try out a new mascaras a sample from a more expensive brand, and put the L’Oreal over top to set a non-waterproof mascara (because it runs under my eyes) and to add a little extra volume if needed. I completely recommend this L’Oreal mascara and many  other kinds of L’Oreal mascara,  as long as the mascara is waterproolipf.

winter-make-up-forever-artist-plexi-gloss
Make Up Forever: Artist Plexi-Gloss in 209 Fuchsia – Pink -www.sephora.ca – $24.00 CAN

4. Make Up Forever: Artist Plexi Gloss – 209 Fuschsia Pink (Opaque) – (7 mL) – http://www.sephora.ca – $24.00 CAN

Lately, I find myself becoming more interested in lip products. For most of my twenties, lip gloss or lipstick in a light pink was fine for going out or during the  day. Now I find I enjoy wearing a bit of colour on my lips because you can wear a bold lip and wear hardly any other makeup than a bit of mascara, eyeliner, and concealer.

Usually, I like to wear makeup but every once and a while, if I’m just running quick errands and than going home, I don’t feel like putting all the effort into doing my full makeup routine. My pet peeve about lipsticks and glosses is in a way, the same way  I feel about mascaras: I hate when I buy a more expensive lipstick or gloss and it comes off right away, the first time you have a glass of water. Also, I hate that many lip glosses can be sticky.

This is not the case with Make Up Forever’s Artist Plexi-Gloss. It’s super amazing stuff and you can buy it many colours in a high shine finish or in a shimmer finish. The colour I bought was a Fuchsia Pink and it’s amazing. I’m not huge on bright red lipstick as you know, but this is my trade off. I love wearing this bright shade some days, and it stays on incredibly well through drinking, eating, and whatever else you’re doing. I’m so pleased by how long the colour lasts.

Besides the brilliant colours this Artist Plexi-Gloss has an artist designed foam applicator (a”superflex” tip) which is amazing for applying the gloss and having “precision and control,” while doing it. As well, I enjoy that the Plexi-Gloss is shiny but not super shiny such as many sticky lip glosses or moisturizing lipsticks. Plexi-Gloss is more akin to lipstick with shine, the colour is so intense. I highly recommend this lip product; it is most certainly worth the $24.00 CAN.

winter-laneige-multiberry-yogurt-repairing-mask
Laneige: Multiberry Yogurt Repairing Mask – For All Skin – http://www.sephora.ca – $33.00 CAN

5. LANEIGE: Multiberry Yogurt Repairing Mask(2.7 Oz) – http://www.sephora.ca – $33.00 CAN

I’ve hardly ever had a problem with dry skin in my entire life. My problem has always been oily skin. Being a couple of years into my thirties, I find my skin is changing a bit. It  has become more dry. The chilly -25 degrees Celsius weather we are experiencing in Alberta, Canada isn’t helping my dry skin either.

Having had troubles with many skin products in the past, I’m always hesitant about different face masks and other brands of skincare. But I’ve been so pleased with a newer brand to Sephora called Laneige. I’ve tried a couple small one or two day samples of their  products. But also with my Sephora points, bought a large sample of Laneige’s Multiberry Yogurt Repairing Mask.

It smells wonderful, a bit as yogurt of course, but also as strawberries. The sample I received which was (0.6 fl.oz), lasted two-months and I’ve been used this moisturizing mask every two-days as directed. This Yogurt Repairing Mask is put it on after using your toner. You leave the mask on for five to ten minutes and then gently rinse it off your face with lukewarm water. After you can apply any other creams or your moisturizers you use to your face.

I wake the next morning after using this Yogurt Repairing Mask and my skin feels soft and hydrated. It’s not dry as my skin has often been feeling lately. I did go and purchase this from Sephora, it was highly worth it.

Laneige’s Multiberry Yogurt Repairing Mask delivers “nutrition” and “antioxidants” deep into skin. It is formulated to “remove dead skin” from the surface of your face. Its unique “fermented yogurt” formula provides “anti-irritation” benefits to the skin. Not to mention, I’ve never once broken out after using this mask the next day or any days after. I’m excited to maybe try other products from Laneige’s skin care line. I most definitively recommend this mask and I think for how long the product lasts, the price is reasonable.

Please stay tuned for Part Two of my Winter 2016/2017 Beauty Haul!

Day 25 Prompt: Red
“When I was growing up I extremely disliked the color red, not sure if the fact I had red hair had anything to do with it or not. It wasn’t until a few years back that I started to enjoy red and now I love it. I completely embrace red! How about you? Love it? Hate it? Don’t feel anything about it? I have always enjoyed big red barns though, I think it is because my great grandparents lived/owned/worked on their ranch with a big red barn and farmhouse. I loved having family gatherings out there.”

1. The astronaut stared at the ethereal painting until time dissolved around her, visions and gradations of colour enthralling her in their vise; tears ran down her cheeks, floating with no gravity to push them down.

2. How fantastic and brilliant was the artist to create such a bright and vivid picture; to catch the flares of fire from the sun burning, and the bright blue tendrils, wispy and trailing around the earth appearing more like solar storms than the oceans and clouds of the planet.

3. What was even more captivating, was the artist Himself, a being infinite in wisdom, mercy, and grace; a designer with vision, who within his wisdom devised such an inspiring and beautiful creation as earth, which teamed with diverse and intelligent life; the view from space was so heart-stopping, it made the astronaut sob.

Part 1: February to May Beauty Haul 2016 – For Eyes #everydayinspiration

Happy May Long Weekend! I haven’t had a beauty post in a long while.

These products I’ve picked up are from February to the present month of May. I didn’t necessarily buy all these products at Sephora, but it is  easier to search for them all on the Sephora website. As I’ve mentioned, I often buy some of my makeup and skincare at Shoppers Drug Mart or at Beauty Boutique Online, but they do not always carry all the products and brands I use.

This is Part 1 of a beauty haul. I have a second part coming soon with products unrelated to the eyes. Also, a note, I’m using this post to fulfill a Writing 101 prompt to critique something; I’m certainly critiquing these eye makeup products and tools.

1. NARS – Dual Intensity Eye Shadow in Andromeda – (www.sephora.ca) – $33.00 CAN

Beauty - NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Andromeda 33.00
NARS Dual Intensity Eye Shadow in Andromeda -Colour appears less pink than it is. (www.sephora.ca)

I’m fond of NARS blushes and eye shadows because they have fantastic colour pigment. Years ago, I had bought a NARS palette with eye shadows and blush included, but I have never used NARS eyeshadow since I used up that pallete. I was searching for a lighter coloured eyeshadow with a bit of sparkle and shine to it when I saw this NARS shadow at Sephora. The colour Andromeda is perfect for highlighting your brow bone or the corner of your eye. It also is a beautiful colour to wear all over your eyelid if you are looking for a colour to make your eyes pop. Darker colours can make eyes appear smaller (even though darker shadow look lovely in an ombre or smokey eye). Another reason I like Andromeda is because in other eyeshadow palettes I’ve purchased, I always run out of the lightest colours first. My skin is pale so extremely dark colours don’t often suit me unless I’m going out at night but even then, I can only use a bit for effect. For the most part, a medium intensity or lighter coloured eye shadow suits me in the daytime and those of you who have lighter skin tones. I’m able to use Andromeda with my palettes to replace the lighter colours I use up quickly. There are many more gorgeous colours of NARS eyeshadow available at Sephora and I recommend NARS eyeshadow for their quality of pigment and variety of colour.

2. Make Up Forever – Smoky Extravagent Mascara: Dramatic Impact and Graphic Precision – (www.sephora.ca) – $30.00 CAN

I received this mascara as a sample from Sephora.  It is an excellent mascara due

Beauty - MAKE UP FOREVER - Smoky Extravagent Mascara
Make Up Forever – Smokey Extravagant Mascara: Dramatic Impact and Graphic Precision (www.sephora.ca)

to its wonderful volumizing brush. The shape of the brush is extremely wide at the bottom of the mascara wand and tiny at the top. This means you receive major volume where your lashes need volume in the middle of your eyelashes, but the wand still picks up the tiny lashes in the outer corners of your eyes. I’m extremely pleased with this mascara.

Using the product, I’ve had to use a waterproof mascara over top (as usual) as regular mascara tends to streak around my eyes due to my oilier skin. With the waterproof mascara over top the Smokey Extravagant Mascara, the product stays on well. On Sephora’s website, however; I found a waterproof version of the Smokey Extravagant mascara called Aqua Smokey Extravagant Water Proof Mascara. The price is exactly the same, so if  I bought this mascara in the future I would buy the waterproof version. Using the regular mascara or the waterproof version, Smokey Extravagant is a fantastic mascara, one of the best mascaras I’ve used in a long time. The brush on the mascara wand makes such a huge difference when you apply mascara, not to mention a mascara formula which doesn’t become clumpy over time.

3. Tarte – Lights, Camera, Lashes 4 in 1 Mascara – (www.sephora.ca) – $25.00 CAN

Beauty - TARTE - Lights, Camera, Lashes 4 in 1 Mascara
Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4 in 1 Mascara (www.sephora.ca)

I received this mascara as a sample from Tarte when I ordered off their website. It is a great mascara. The brush is designed so it picks up every lash and I know many people who rave about this mascara. There is also a waterproof version available on Sephora called Lights, Camera, Splashes, for the exact same price. I was pleased how the Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara wand picked up every one of my lashes coating them with mascara. I would have said it was the most awesome mascara, before I tried the Make Up Forever mascara above. The issue is, sometimes mascara wands which pick-up every tiny lash, fail to create volume in your eyelashes where you need it. The mascara itself appeared to be a great formula but I think the Lights, Camera, Lashes brush needs a bit of work. I believe it is an excellent mascara and I would use a sample again if I received it, but after using the Make Up Forever Smoky Extravagant mascara, I think the Tarte mascara doesn’t quite measure up .On the upside, Tarte products are made from natural minerals and are a Vegan makeup line so if you’re looking for these aspects and want makeup that is of excellent quality, Tarte is the brand to use. As well, a five dollars difference in price between the two mascaras maybe a deal breaker for some of you.

4. Stila – Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Intense Black and Midnight Blue – (www.sephora.ca) – $29.00 CAN

Months ago, I was searching for a

Beauty - STILA - Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Intense Black
Stila – Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner – Intense Black (www.sephora.ca)

waterproof liquid eyeliner to replace my Lancome liner, which changed after many years. I had used the non-waterproof version of the Stila liquid eyeliners and was not impressed. I was hesitant to try the waterproof version, but after seeing how intense the black eyeliner was on my hand, I decide to give the black eyeliner a try. It has become my new go-to for black eyeliner. The felt tip is pointy so you can give yourself a thinner line or build it up to be a thicker line. The Intense Black liner has lasted me four-months and is going strong.

Recently, I have seen a trend in magazines, of blue eyeliner with a paired down eye of basic eyeshadow.  I went and I purchased the same Stila liner I have

Beauty - STILA - Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Midnight Blue
Stila – Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner – Midnight Blue (www.sephora.ca)

in the colour Midnight Blue. I probably chose a darker blue than they showed in the magazine, but I’m extremely happy with this Midnight blue liner and have been wearing it everyday since I bought it. It’s dark enough that it doesn’t make your eyeliner completely standout, but the Midnight blue is change enough you notice it isn’t black liner. The colour goes well with blue eyes and I imagine it would appear beautiful on people with  brown eyes, as it is an opposite colour for brown eyes in makeup. I believe these Stila liquid eyeliners are a fantastic investment for eyeliner, whatever the colour(s) you choose. Sephora has other colour options available as well. Also, the waterproof liquid liner stays on your lash line well and works well for giving yourself a cat-eye flick. You are able to wipe a bit of liner away if you’ve messed up your line, as long as you do it immediately after applying. If you’ve waited too long, you can take some concealer on a Q-tip and gently make some of your eyeliner fade and disappear where you messed up.

For those of you who have trouble with eyeliner, especially liquid eyeliner. Here is a helpful YouTube Tutorial I found on Basic Eyeliner this morning:

5. Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion in Minor Sin – (www.sephora.ca) – $26.00 CAN

I have used various versions of Urban Decay eye shadow primer for years. Their

Beauty - URBAN DECAY - Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Minor Sin
Urban Decay – Eye Shadow Primer Potion – Minor Sin (www.sephora.ca

primers for eye shadow are the absolute best and help your eyeshadow stay put on your eyelid, without your eye shadow fading. I usually use Urban Decay’s basic primer but I chose to buy Minor Sin this time as it has a bit of a shimmery golden sheen to it and can be worn without eye shadow. Layering eye shadow over Minor Sin, also gives your eye shadow a slight sheen underneath, if you don’t apply too much shadow over top. Urban Decay eye shadow primers also last a long time. I usually receive over six-months use out of a large tube.

The only issue I have with  Minor Sin is I do not like  that its tube is not a squeeze tube such as my Urban Decay eye shadow primers have been in the past. Minor Sin comes with a brush and I don’t like the brush. I don’t believe it is as sanitary as a squeeze tube. You shouldn’t place the primer directly on your eyelid/eye area with the brush because bacteria could get into the tube once you put the brush back in. I think the best idea is to put some of the primer on the back of your hand and use your fingers to apply it to your eyes, however; I do not like this method either because it is easy to waste the product accidentally applying too much product to the back of your hand. The squeeze tube was both more sanitary and made the primer last longer as you only used as much primer as needed with the squeeze tube. I love how Minor Sin looks and works as a primer, but I’m not happy with the design change of the tube and brush.

6. Sephora – Must Have Powder Eye Shadow Brush #60 – (www.sephora.ca) – $19.00 CAN

Beauty - SEPHORA - Must Have Powder Shadow Brush - 60
Sephora – Must Have Powder Shadow Brush #60 (www.sephora.ca)

My last fluffy eye shadow brush I bought was from Shoppers Drug Mart and I still have it and use it. But Shoppers Drug Mart didn’t have the same brush available so I went to Sephora, whose brushes I have found to be better than Shoppers Drug Mart brand makeup brushes anyways. I didn’t choose Sephora’s top of the line brushes as I have with some of my makeup brushes such a foundation brush or a blush brush. I do not find it necessary to have top quality makeup brushes with eyeshadow brushes, which don’t go through the wear and tear other brushes do. I wanted another fluffier powder brush to blend eyeshadow above my lid and this brush works perfectly for the job. It’s not as fluffy as the Shoppers Drug Mart brush but it it is good enough and washes up well with dish soap. No hairs have fallen out of the brush so I believe for the price point and design, the brush is excellent.

7. Sephora – Crease Eye Shadow Brush #73 – (www.sephora.ca) – $20.00 CAN

Much of what I said with the last eyeshadow brush applies with this crease eye shadow

Beauty - SEPHORA - Crease Eyeshadow Brush- 73
Sephora – Crease Eye Shadow Brush #73 (www.sephora.ca)

brush. The crease eye shadow brush is used to blend a darker shade of eyeshadow into your crease area. I have and use my first crease eyeshadow brush from Shoppers Drug Mart and I like it better than the one I bought at Sephora.

Although, the Sephora brush is nice and the hair doesn’t fall out when you wash it, the brush is a bit big and fluffy for blending eye shadow in one’s eye crease. It works, but it is easy to accidentally apply too much eye shadow in your crease with this brush. But for my purposes, this brush is fine. I use it to go in after I have used my original Shoppers Drug Mart crease brush, and blend all the eye makeup in my crease together. The reason I bought both brushes was for blending purposes and not to actually apply eyeshadow, although; I will probably use the brushes for both jobs. I’m happy with both brushes, but wish the crease eye shadow brush was smaller and less fluffy. For the price point and quality, they are both excellent brushes.

Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for Part 2.

24. How Was Last Night For You: Escaping Talise, A Wicked Sea Witch

Please read Chapter 23 here.

Chapter 24: Escaping Talise, A Wicked Sea Witch

Nina wanted to scream but the hand covering her mouth made it impossible for her to make a sound. She could barely breath she was so afraid of who had captured her. The man held her solidly against his his chest. Perhaps, Malcolm was still bewitched by Talise and keeping Nina trapped in the water for Talise to find?

Nina started to struggle against the man holding her captive. He had them both propped up against the boat where Nina had decided to hide from Talise. Nina splashed and pushed against the man’s chest, but he wouldn’t let her go. Talise was chanting her spell so loudly, her words could be heard throughout Adare’s Harbour.Had she noticed Nina had disappeared?

Nina kicked against the man holding her and attempted to use her elbows to injure him. She tried to knee him where it would hurt but then the arms holding her dunked Nina in the water a moment, before bringing her back up to the surface of the Sirene sputtering.

A familiar voice behind her said: “Shhh.” Nina turned her head minutely, enough to see a man holding a finger to his full lips. Nina peered over her shoulder to get a peek at the man. Maybe this man was trying to help her and he would aid her in escaping Talise?

Nina whispered so quietly she wasn’t sure the man could hear her, “Who are you? Is it Malcolm? John?” She whispered the last name hopefully. A kiss to her temple reassured her.

Nina wanted to jump for joy but she remained completely still and calm. She whispered to John, “I missed you. You wouldn’t answer your phone.” Behind her, John chuckled. His lips moved to Nina’s ear kissing the tip of it.

“My Nina,” John said in a hushed voice. Nina wanted to shout in happiness but she knew the perilous position both she and John were in. She snuggled against John in the coolness of the water. John kept Nina afloat in the Sirene, leaning on the boat.

He released his tight hold on Nina so she was able to turn in arms and face John. She peered into John’s sapphire eyes beneath his sopping dark brown hair. Nina brushed wet hair off John’s forehead tenderly and gasped seeing how purple the circles under John’s eyes appeared. John regarded Nina tiredly with a soft smile but she noticed how much John leaned on the boat for support and how his eyes kept shutting.

“John,” Nina whispered,”Did you swim the entire way back from Talise’s cave? You look exhausted. I don’t know how you were holding me so tightly when you look as if you’ve had every ounce of strength zapped out of you. You need to sleep.”

“Miles to go before I sleep,” John quoted Blake, smiling at Nina. “You’re wearing the necklace from the Farmer’s Market.”

“Of course,” Nina said quietly, “I never take it off. You know that. It seems as if attempting to save me from Talise alone, hasn’t been working for you John. I think it’s better when we collaborate; if we face Talise as a team.” John grinned but his face appeared wan.

“I got her dagger, Nina,” John whispered. “She’ll want me because I have her dagger. I injured her with it. She’s not letting on, but it’s why her spell isn’t working right now. Usually, I think she could use the Sirene’s Lake water and kill you no matter where you were in the Lake. But Talise can’t find you in the lake, her magic isn’t powerful enough.”

“She doesn’t want to kill me John. Talise wants us to suffer to be a part. She’s been considering this for the three-months I was healing from my head and you weren’t feeling as if you were cursed. She wants to change me into a mermaid and bewitch you permanently, so you have little free will.” Nina murmured.

“Talise wants to use us each to taunt the other, knowing we can never be together. If you’re human and I’m a mermaid, you’ll die and I’ll have hundreds of years alive without you. Only when your dead, will I be able to walk on land as mermaids sometimes do.” Nina whispered, tears escaping her pale blue eyes.

John looked aghast.”Talise – Tia is awful. I can’t believe she was special to me at one time. When I was twenty-five-years-old, I actually thought I loved her. I even told her I lied to my brothers, that I actually cared about her. Talise doesn’t believe me. She has past issues, about a guy named Ethan, her beloved husband. He cheated on her throughout their entire marriage in the 1800’s.”

“I know,” Nina said hushing John’s words with a finger to his lips. The tears dripping from her eyes stung her chilly skin.”There’s something worse though John . . . Talise said we can’t break the curse. If you sacrifice yourself for me, you’ll die. I’ll be alone, saved from death or a fish tale but without you in my life.”

John, with great effort, kissed Nina, exploring her mouth with his own, before pulling himself back up against the boat. “I had figured the curse might be that kind of curse.” John murmured tiredly.

“What kind? You mean not the kind that exists in fairytales where good always wins?”

“Yes, my Nina. That kind. The type where evil lives to thrive and destroy another day.” John sighed. He was freakishly pale.

“I’m sorry Nina. I have to end this whatever the outcome. I have to finish off Talise. It’s the reason I went to get her dagger. I will thrust it through her heart. She said she would do the same to you. I have to ensure that never happens.” John gazed at Nina determinedly.

Nina could see John gathering himself together for one last fight, ready to leave the boats where they both hid and declare his presence to Talise. But suddenly, the water around them began to froth and bubble.

Waves rose and separated John and Nina, carrying Nina far out to the middle of the Sirene, past all the yachts, sailing boats and any kind of boat a person might have kept at the harbour in Adare.

Nina was pulled out to where she could barely swim because the swells of waves kept burying her in the Sirene’s water, which Nina was choking up. She was having trouble catching her breathe.

Nina glanced at John before she was carried under the waves of the Sirene, under the water. He was leaning against the boat one minute, then feverishly swimming out to Nina with all his might. He struggled because he was so worn out and Nina noticed John’s strength was fading fast. There was only so much swimming a body could possibly do in one night.

Talise in rage, appeared behind Nina. She was  a mermaid, hag, and sea witch with fierce neon green eyes and teeth which were sharp and pointed. Nina never pictured a sea witch or a mermaid having such fearsome teeth.

Talise laughed darkly, holding Nina against her frightening yet frail appearance. Nina knew better then to think Talise weak. She reached her hand to Talise’s wrinkled arm, which was putting Nina in a choke hold, and dug her long oval pink nails, into Talise’s arm wound. Nina poked and pried at Talise’s injury until Talise cried out in pain. She pushed Nina under the water to make Nina stop further injuring Talise’s arm.

Nina wouldn’t end her hold on Talise’s arm wound, even as she felt herself struggling to breathe underwater. Briefly, her hand lifted from Talise’s arm when Talise pulled Nina up above the Sirene Lake’s water.

“Stop it you little bitch,” Talise told Nina. She grabbed Nina’s hair plunging Nina’s face into the water, regarding Nina as she would a gnat, as Nina drowned.

Talise pulled Nina’s face out of the water and close to her mouth and sharp teeth. “Behave Nina,” Talise warned and held Nina against her.

“I know you swim poorly, but don’t worry I have a tail and can swim for us both. We’re going to be great friends you and I Nina, as I’ve said. John is a blip. No good for either of us. What’s that they say, ‘ho’s before bro’s.'” Talise cackled at her own lame humour.

Nina didn’t find Talise funny at all.”Leave him alone. Don’t you dare touch John. I will hurt you and I will find a way to kill you if dare lay a finger on him. You’re injured Talise. I’ll stop at nothing to use that weakness against you.”

Talise smiled flashing her pointed teeth.”There’s that spirit John adores. Watch him struggle in the waves, he’s been swimming for hours and hours, he hasn’t much strength left.” Talise remarked.”As he drowns, I’ll get my dagger. I’m ending this here and now.”

Nina watched John fight and attempt to swim in the water which was still frothing and bubbling around him. She began to cry, fearing she was watching the man she loved drowning

In a moment, there were lights in the middle of the Sirene Lake. A sailing boat came thrusting through the water shining light on Nina and Talise in the water. The boat’s name was written in huge navy letters across its side. It’s name was Faith. Something Nina desperately needed at present.

Another light from Faith fell on John and a lifesaver was thrown out towards him. John grabbed unto the lifesaver gratefully, his sapphire gaze glued on Nina, beneath his darkly bruised under eye skin.

Talise screamed in rage, terrifyingly ugly. She had become a freak of nature, of even folklore. Nina began digging her hand into Talise’s arm wound, scraping out chunks of flesh as Talise’s elbow grip around Nina’s neck increased until it was asphyxiating Nina.

Nina thought she would pass out. In the haze of her mind, somewhere between breathe and death, Nina saw Jordan swimming out to meet John. Jordan and John were both the light provided by Faith, John’s sail boat.

The weather wasn’t stormy but nor was the Lake around Talise gentle. Her magic was powerful enough to make the middle of the Sirene rough. It must have been around 3:00 am, Nina thought judging from the time she was bewitched into leaving her condo. She wondered what Talise thought about Nina being able to break her bewitchment spell.

Nina dug her free hand into Talise’s face scratching and attempting to gouge Talise’s glowing eyes. Talise shrieked trying to asphyxiate Nina again. When Nina wouldn’t cease digging her fingers into Talise’s arm wound and face, Talise bit Nina’s shoulder.

“Ahhh…” Nina cried out. The pain she felt was searing and could be felt by her entire nervous system. Instantly, Nina’s gaze flew to her shoulder, a blackish-green substance oozed out of ferocious bite marks. “Poison…” Nina whispered to herself. Her body was shuddering from the pain and the toxin from Talise’s mouth; the poison was causing Nina lethargy.

Nina had to have screamed loudly because Nina saw John thrust something at Jordan. Jordan grasped the dagger John had stolen from Talise. It was what Talise most wanted. Through haze and mental fog, Nina saw Talise’s eyes grow wide as she spotted the dagger Jordan held.

Talise smiled and told Nina: “I’m going to get the dagger back now Nina. It’s mine. I killed the evilest sea witch for it. I’m killing John with it. I shouldn’t have changed my mind about killing you. My bite is poisonous and the toxins have entered your bloodstream. You’ll die as John will and probably his meddlesome brother Jordan as well.”

“You won’t kill John. Part of you still wants him. Part of you loves him, it’s why you want to control him. To make him your perfect boyfriend. The husband, you never had because let’s face it Talise your a dumb childless witch and no one wants to be with someone like you. Someone who would sell her soul, for revenge.” Nina’s voice was surprisingly loud, it hurt her own ears.

“Get your soul back Talise. It’s the only way you can go back. You could have a normal life and meet someone new.Better then Ethan or John. But once you kill with that dagger, I’m guessing you can’t go back…” Nina’s voice faltered.

Talise observed Nina as the poison made Nina weak. Nina’s body was shuddering and turning rigid. Talise was noticeably quiet as she thought about what Nina said. The pronounced wrinkles on her forehead folding deeper. ” I can’t be saved. I made my choice. You know nothing about Ethan. John could never take his place, not know. I can’t take the risk of another man like Ethan or John. I can’t just start all over again . . .”

“Every woman, every girl, starts over again in the world Talise. It’s how relationships work. It’s why we’re the stronger sex, why we can handle having kids. Because we can handle the pain of having our hearts broken again and again first.” Nina’s voice was barely a whisper, she was fading into light.

Then, Talise was pulling Nina’s body through the water, weightlessly, towards John who clung to the lifesaver.  Jordan held onto his own lifesaver, the black dagger in his hands ready to plunge into Talise’s heart. Archaic symbols glowed red on the dagger as Talise grew nearer to its presence. To John and Jordan Talise was terrifying, yet the tumbling water around them had ceased, and Talise’s eyes had dimmed to a muddy-green.

Nina faded out of consciousness. There was colour here. Beautiful and brilliant waves and patterns of colour everywhere. It was overwhelming at first. The colour folded Nina’s body in its vividness and she felt as if she could finally sleep. Recalling John’s words from the Robert Frost poem as she drifted: “. . . And miles to go before I sleep.” Perhaps, Nina’s miles were done.

Poem: Terzanelle  – “Her Painted Face”

The Terzanelle is a poetry type which is a combination of the villanelle and the terza rima forms. It is a 19-line poem consisting of five interlocking triplets/tercets plus a concluding quatrain in which the first and third lines of the first triplet appear as refrains. The middle line of each triplet is repeated, reappearing as the last line of the succeeding triplet with the exception of the center line of the next-to-the-last stanza which appears in the quatrain. 3Line Tales – The Luxury of Colour

1.Flags fluttering multicolour and multicultural in the breeze; there is a feeling of hope in the air for refugees coming to this country to escape terrorism and a terrible life in their home countries; so many have come seeking a new life and to escape the horror that was life back where they were from; many people wonder at the luxuries afforded in the western world, even the multicoloured flags seem extravagent, yet strangely exciting.

2. Jas looks at all the colourful bright flags with ecstatic joy; wearing bright colours where he lives means you are more likely to get shot; Jas feels the warm fleece of his red sweatshirt and grins, he loves the colour red, the colour of hope, life, and love; Jas loves all the colours of the flags, he wants clothing in every colour because in this country he is free — no one will kill him for his love of freedom and vibrancy.

3. A woman with a hijab stares up at the flags, all in primary and secondary colours. Where she is from the women wear black, the coloured flags are bright for her eyes but she is quickly growing used to their beautiful rainbow look as they flap like clothing on a clothes line; the woman fingers her hijab wondering if Allah would be upset if she wore a hijab in a jewel blue, or lapis luzia blue; she doesn’t say her thought aloud but the amount  of colour in this new country is making her dream and hope, if only for the luxury to wear blue.

Poem: Ghazal -“Newest Illusion”

A Ghazal is a poem that is made up like an odd numbered chain of couplets, where each couplet is an independent poem. It should be natural to put a comma at the end of the first line. The Ghazal has a refrain of one to three words that repeat, and an inline rhyme that precedes the refrain. Lines 1 and 2, then every second line, has this refrain and inline rhyme, and the last couplet should refer to the authors pen-name… The rhyming scheme is AA bA cA dA eA etc.

Please see Shadow Poetry for further information.

To explain this definition in my poem, ‘illusion’ is my repeating refrain and the word ‘trusting’ is the inline rhyme word that I’m working with in my poem for line A.

——

Mirage of sensations, not trusting your illusion.

Letting go, letting you in — difficult, just an illusion,

Words swimming in my mind, creatures of the depths in flight,

Begun ‘us,’ place my heart in your hands — I must; illusion.

Images of red, colour offends me from my past life,

Wobbly bridge, cross to you or stuck, you an illusion.

Travelling wisps in the darkness they kiss, ghostly mist.

Implies, in my dreams, I have to risk, not just illusions.

Fantasy helps me escape you’re real, you’re here.

Thoughts unravel typing, wonder must I see illusion?

Confusion alludes to facts, can’t trust my own heart beating so fast.

Around you I find, feeling lust I conclude, you’re illusion.

Days will pass, yesterday is past, don’t relax yet, sublimity.

Thunderstorm forming, anger conforms, rusty old illusion.

Moments they hinder, life from lingering as you drift on by,

Would you be my shelter, find in me hope and trust — illusion.

Our minds whirl, spin, all over the place, seeking a resting place.

Need you to be my peaceful place in life, not just illusion.

Wrapped in your arms, haven of warmth, hearts beating as one,

Didn’t know, what I know now, you’re a must, no illusion.
