Shivering as if I’m shedding,

As if I’ll never know heat;

Or a belly without ache.

Crisp bacon and sausage sizzles,

French toast with cream cheese;

Clouds of whipped cream,

Maple syrup flowing in valleys;

Sweet strawberry jam,

Tart on my tongue,

The crisp-softness of toast;

Homemade bread devoured.

Orange juice with champagne,

Sweetness and fizzing bubbles.

Chatter, hands passing,

Sniggers and giggles;

Raising the bar; the bets are laid —

Who can eat the most pancakes?

There is plenty in this dream,

Richness and generosity abounds —

Reality’s barren and frosted.

No warmth of hugs or arms over shoulders,

Until a burning stillness settles.

The sensation of hovering above,

Until your firefly soul lifts.

The memory of family, breakfast with ice-cream,

Strawberry sauce and flaked croissants;

Of food so boundless that all gnawing hunger’s abolished.

No daydream with clawing pains,

Only serenity, path into a place —

Where loved ones suffer not.

Where there’s no war to justify —

No battle to survive;

Nor land that will not thaw to grow.

Above, there’s glowing prosperity,

A joyfulness that never pales.

No ice-white skin preserved in chill,

No forever winter.

A flame that flickers and overwhelms,

Sparks and heat spread,

As butter melts on fresh bread.

Reflecting on golden streets,

A feast as none knew before.

Temporality extinguished,

The relief of a forever home

Not hunger nor strife.

It’s unimaginable,

But after all the misery —

This stairway’s an easy flight.

Gathering with,

Our families a bond,

There, despite —

The distance.

Sharing our lives together

Meeting, laughing, joy.

—-

Siblings,

Connecting; though years —

In childhood,

Have passed by.

Fiances, partners, meeting —

New loved ones enfold.

—-

Families,

They grow and alter.

Babies too,

Added and —

Some family sadly they pass,

Onto their forever home.

And on the —

New Year, we gather,

Again to —

Ring in a —

Better year, with promise; hope,

Less pain, more grace known.

—–

So I pray,

For all of you, when —

You pour the —

Champagne and —

Kiss your most beloved one,

Think too, of suffering

Those whose holidays,

Have less cheer, are hard

Those who fight

Have trials

Those without home, wealth, and —

Know not where food comes.

—–

For those who,

Are trying to feed,

Little mouths.

They go with —

Out; but they need energy,

To work, to provide.

—-

For those who’ve,

Demons inside, they can’t —

Struggle more,

And survive.

For those who don’t know there’s hope

Think and aid them all.

—-

Help comes in,

Many ways; talking,

Mere words which,

Keep the edge,

Far away; give friendship, gifts —

Something showing thought.
—-

You can help,

Volunteer to kids,

Charity,

Read with them.

You can do many thoughtful

Things; don’t forget.

—-

For those snug,

At home and gifted to know,

Warmth and love.

Abundantly

Blessed; may we keep the —

Season in our hearts.

Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner: Graduation Mishap

Thank you to Roger Shipp for hosting FFftPP.

Ghost Girl
http://www.pixebay.com

Michelle and Nadine had rented a limo with their respective dates, for their graduation reception.

“Here,” Michelle’s Mom said ” champagne for you to enjoy with your friends on the ride around town. We’ll see you at your graduation reception.”

“Thanks Mom,” Michelle hugged her Mom tight.

“Don’t drink too much now.”

Brian and Marcus watched their dates inhale the champagne.

“I’m pretty sure you’ve each had half the bottle,” Brain said to Michelle grinning.

Marcus laughed his arm around Nadine, ” Yeah, Nadine’s had the other half.”

Both girls squeezed out of the sun roof , dancing and singing to the loud dance music the limo driver played.

“We’re going to hit the bottom of the bridge Michelle, we have to get down.” Nadine said suddenly.

“I’m stuck Michelle come on move, so I can go back inside.”

Michelle wiggled and Nadine was back inside the limo. She yanked at Michelle, desperately trying to pull her in.

When she heard Michelle hit the bridge Nadine screamed.

Michelle awoke feeling pleasantly weightless.

With surprise, she spotted a ghostly hand reaching out to her from a window. Michelle reached out and instantly, her body felt painful and broken.

“I don’t know how, but you’re alive,” a paramedic said to Michelle.

Michelle heard her mother crying. “We’ve been waiting what feels like forever, to hear those words.

Poem: Free Verse – “Paper Bag Princess.”

Here’s for the meanings and the seemings,

The words we’ve been breathing, though they are concealing,

We’re never hidden behind steal, or a solid wall of bricks.

And we’re shamed, peeking out of ‘the cupboard,’ hiding like the Indian did from a childhood book.

We move through our thoughts, the glances of others who don’t understand —

What it means to remain hidden.

——

They’re all out there with their sunglasses and dreamy looks,

In a world finding love, come together — some love separates.

And I haven’t spent the days before Valentine’s Day dreaming,

I don’t need a man to give me flowers or chocolates.

I don’t need more demands and inferences of combinations dialled,

Short and electric, but fizzles and drizzles, as the rain pours outside.

Dividing our time between sleeping and daylight,

And the sun keeps on rising;

I keep on imprivising all the things I’m construing,

In a mind filled with despising a guy who I left.

Who made me know what it hurts like to feel neglect,

After he’s gone on, but still calling — I wish he would stop.

That I could forget all about these “tygers” and their wants.

I’m not happy nor comfortable, unless they get their cut, pieces of my being;

They’re dividing me among each other, taking the best cuts and leaving the scraps.

—–

And outside is a puppy and I want to hold her, because she doesn’t need much —

Only to eat, walk, cuddle, play, and go wee.

She needs her nails clipped and her teeth brushed sometimes.

I’m a woman begging everyday of her life for things I’m uninspired to give,

If you won’t even attempt to do better, make it as important as a ‘business deal.’

I’m not above you or below you you dirty-thirty-something.

I’m just looking for meaning among people who are loyal.

I’m caught in my dreams, betwixt the real and the “real” in this Wonderland.

And if we look through the ‘looking glass’ we only see people in poverty,

Who are thinking only of eating and surviving.

Loving doesn’t matter much when you are looking for fresh water,

When you’re sickly and dying — or does it matter most?

——

But here, won’t you hear me —

In our first- world of problems —

I’m trying! I’m trying — but it’s never enough.

You dragons eat your steaks and leave me with nothing but my dry bones.

You ravish a ‘paper-bag princess’ and leave her without a stitch;

Clothes that cover her heart.

And you suck her organs dry of blood and all matter,

You leave a her exposed for the vultures to grasp at,

You break open a bottle of liquor and the whole room explodes,

Covered in champagne and the bubbles make you choke.

Sifting through closets, cover up my exposed heart,

I don’t want to reveal myself but in the “real” world I must.

Because if your broken your fixable and can be put back together,

A mirror that’s shattered and eternally busted.

——

And these words may make little sense but that’s what you call — prose poetry,

Of a girl, who’s  a woman, who’s a child, who’s lured by the promises,

Of a blackness so bleak no one can see in front of their face,

Because in the darkest depths, the light shines brightest.

Arise and save yourself,

Think of the words to describe your freedom desired —

Taylor Swift wrote it well: ” It’s too late for you and your white horse to catch me now.”

Poem: ” Not in the Moment.”

A midnight Christmas poem, to settle you to sleep after turkey dinners and children’s dreams. (A picture of a beach to encourage your own.)

At an hour the moon is magnificently full and round and never will be again for many years. Describe your perfect moment. (Can you see that beach?)

Describe now, what you want to accomplish in the coming year, pass your festive cheer and go on to new beginnings. (In Hawaii?)

Or, go a little easy on the nog or “special” punch so you can think in a half sensical state about what you would like your life to be as you persevere through the night.

You might never change a thing; your life could be exactly how it is in the moment you’re enjoying. Or maybe you would like to experience some changes … (In the surf on a sandy beach walking through tiny waves that lap at your feet.)

Life is full of the good and bad. And no time like Christmas to reflect, the bad ain’t so bad. We are all blessed in this respect.

To have a home, a life, a family, food to eat that is even sweet, and food that is healthful, the wine in your glass, the dog in your lap, and the child who is playing with his toy’s box. (To picture a warm place and learn how to surf…)

Life is pretty sweet but there is room to improve for everyone. I don’t mean to push. I don’t mean to shove. But I am looking ahead with a nod over my shoulder (– is that a shark in the water?)

I’m stuck in the midnight glower of a lamp light, composing poems on the night of Christmas, but I guess Christmas is no more soon. (But I still see a Hawaiin sunset…)

Soon we approach a New Year. Soon we say goodbye to 2015. Soon we drink champagne and dance the night away. Soon we have philosophical conversations at 3:00 am with the next holiday party. (Or sit calmly in a lovely cottage near the ocean?)

But stay, here in Christmas time and the birth of ‘Immanuel.’ Stay for a moment in the serenity of the night and swallow your last bit of nog or punch.( Beach …)

Think of your bubble, the charity and love. Despair of the relatives who won’t leave and the mess to clean. Pour another glass. Glug! Glug! Glug!

Midnight is passing and it means that I must sleep leaving you with merely a thought. What do you want in the coming year?

Beyond Boxing Day shopping. Beyond all the presents received. Beyond all the company. Beyond all the food and the drinks. Beyond the festivity, what more could there be. (A sunny warm place where you can lie on the beach.)

But there is always more and that’s the thing; we have so much and these little moments become precious memories that help us through the new when we look ahead and face problems and deficiencies.

Time passes on and the grand moon shines. A blaring light at my window and it is bright in the snow, calling to me softly. Where will you go?

That challenge I suppose waits for days to come in the passing of the year; for now still be of good cheer. Sleep soon. Hangovers get worse each year. (Hawaii is near.)

Writing 101 – Ann and David’s House (from A Letter to Ann)

www.prudencefish.blogspot.com
http://www.prudencefish.blogspot.com

Ann left David’s beautiful 3 story 19th Century house as fast as she could.

She had always loved that house, loved how such history could be preserved and updated. She loved the wrap around porch where David and her had often sat on the outdoor couches and talked about their days, talked about their lives, and what they dreamed of doing in the future together.

She remembered how David had one day in the warm summer, strung up Christmas lights all around the porch and proposed marriage to her one night at sunset. She smiled as she remembered how they had sipped expensive champagne and gorged on gourmet chocolate in utter happiness and joy. Ann had sad “yes,” to David’s proposal and David had taken her in his arms and held her and Ann had felt that she was the most precious person in the world to David. That night had become part of their history and their future, or so Ann had thought.

She loved David’s house, their home. The cozy kitchen had been opened up and outfitted with the most updated appliances where David and her both laughed and cooked. She adored the master bath with its big claw foot tub where she would lie back and unwind after a particularly tense day at the office. She loved the large king sized bed where David and her could both stretch out and sleep without Ann pushing David to the corner of the bed as she spread out in the night. Ann adored waking up to David among soft, thick, and grey sheets and snuggling into him. On most mornings she would roll to David’s side of the bed and wake to kisses and busy hands.

The house had character as the people who inhabited it. Ann often felt the house was a reflection of herself more then David. The soft blue-grey walls in the bedroom were the color of her eyes, understanding and observant. The color and passionate art around the house were a mirror of her inner character, the way she felt around David. Her soft pink lips were the color of some slippery silk pillows in the living room, plush and welcoming. The color of her tanned skin was the same color as the comfy lazy boy David liked to relax in. Just as David was comfortable in that leather chair she was comfortable in her own skin.

The stalwart and geometric construction of the house were also a mirror image of her character steady and firm in her beliefs, something she was proud about herself for being, something David loved about her. The rounded furniture on the patio was a reflection of her body, one she was proud of. She kept her body in shape by running the paths that wrapped around the park in the area, yet as that plush furniture, her body still held a curvaceous shape. Walking away from David’s house felt as if Ann was walking away from herself.

David chased her down as she began the walk to her empty little condo 4 blocks away. “Stay,” he begged, “stay Ann, that little receptionist in their means nothing to me. She came here last night and I let her stay because her boyfriend was beating on her. I couldn’t  kick her out if he was doing that to her, Cameal, had bruises all over arms and legs…”

Ann pursed her pink lips, “She wants to separate us. That little red-head she’s always flirting with you at work and then I see her at your house? What am I a saint? How could I not think that she’s moving in on you after I find that letter right by your place? How could I not think you were sleeping with her after you were sleeping with me, when she shows up at your house and after all the attention you give her?”

“It’s not her I love,” David said making sure he caught Ann’s blue eyes, ” I don’t feel a thing for her, I just felt compassion for her problems. I thought she was just one of those flirty girls at work. I didn’t think she would actually show up at my door and I didn’t think well, that she could have possibly written that letter.”

” But nothing makes sense to me Ann, she wants you to leave, she’s doing it on purpose. I told her to find a friend’s house to stay at tomorrow night. She was hitting on me and when I turned her down she smacked me and makeup from one of the bruises came off on my face. She made the whole boyfriend hitting her story up, the bruises were fake, and I told her that it was inappropriate for her to be at our home any longer.” Ann sighed.

” I’m just not sure what to believe now David. I need to think.” David looked down to the pavement where he stood. He ran a frustrated hand through his inky air. He took Ann’s hand and kissed the diamond on her ring finger. “Remember this,” he said softly and left Ann to walk home alone in thought to her empty condo.
