“It’s one of those things a person has to do; sometimes a person has to go a very long distance out of his way to come back a short distance correctly.” ― Edward Albee, The American Dream & The Zoo Story

——–

Down in the swamp, down in the bogs there’s —

Mud sucking at my feet, at my soul

Everyday I journey here and fight,

The elements, the giant rocks, gnarled trees,

Worst of all the swamp, pulling me in.

There are days I believe I shall let it,

But my wife she sees, working here means,

In such a short while, we shall both be free.

She says, we’re educated, we have more —

To us than meets the eye, we’ve wisdom

To work in horrible conditions,

Because we know two years from now we —

Can leave this wretched bog behind, with all —

The tortures of the tormenting tree limbs,

Nightmares left, there’s better; we’re going —

To the City, where education’s worth —

Something and I won’t have to hate each day.

Mining for fuel, this coal coating my lungs,

My wife’s happy, delighted, she is life

So I listen to my fathers last words:

“Don’t stay in this town all your life, move on.

Take your girl, your college education,

Leave this foul place behind, don’t be me,

Coal dust in your lungs is misery and —

A cancerous death is what awaits you.”

So, I worked and she and I, we left here

To the bustling city, with peaceful parks,

We breathe, ‘neath blossomed trees, reading in light.

Saturday Mix: Poem – Wrapped Refrain – “The Demon Spawned” #amwriting #poetry #saturdaymix

Thanks to Bastet from MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for hosting today’s prompt, a “gothic” tale or poem — the macabre.

——

Credit: MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie

——

Was such a dreary night forewarned,

In dirt squiggled both bugs and worms.

For they too felt doom bemoaning,

To be out on this night groaning.

A monster from hell was spawned, a demon seething,

Earth felt the heaven’s warn, evil darkness speeding.

——

Why such a night did I choose,

To walk my scrawny pooch?

In a fight she would run straight home,

No blind love, she left me alone.

As twilight bubbled as witch’s brew steaming,

An evil curse my bones hurt knowing it was too near.

——

Our little neighbourhood was vast,

In pitch black terror I was cast.

My prayers mumbled beneath my —

Breath; I begged this night not to die.

Starlight and slim moon were covered by creeping thick fog,

Oh, how wished, for even my cowardly scared dog.

—–

Felt I the breath of evil reek,

A touch of frost open my young cheek.

Of something old, of catastrophe,

An ancient wicked masterpiece.

A monster so dark, it did me choke, both claws squeezing,

All life from lungs, bones crushing while I was bleeding.

—–

And now I’m nothing but my soul,

I choose — serve eternity bold.

Be not afraid as I was of dark,

For now I’m light, a fighting spark,

Giving courage, weapons to those facing monsters,

Sending back the most damned beasts, to hell launching.

“Clementine anxiously waited for the 5:40 out of the city, wondering if he would be on board.” It head been two-years since she’d seen Philip. He’d been sent out to fight the Nazis in France. She’d faithfully written to him but Philip hadn’t been able to send many letters back.

After the harrowing footage she’d seen of soldiers fighting on the beaches of Normandy, Clementine wondered if her Philip would be himself; how could he? The train arrived and she continued waiting.

Seconds later Philip was holding her so tightly she couldn’t breath. He cried into her neck,”I thought I’d never see you again.”

“I had no doubt you would,” Clementine whispered back, stroking Philip’s hair as his tears dried.

It was almost as if he’d never been gone; in each other’s arms, they were both home.

Poem: Quatrains: “What Never Heals”

broken-heart
http://www.pinterest.com

“I know that’s what people say– you’ll get over it. I’d say it, too. But I know it’s not true. Oh, you’ll be happy again, never fear. But you won’t forget. Every time you fall in love it will be because something in the man reminds you of him.”

― Betty Smith, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

******

One day you promised me the pain,

Would eventually heal, I’d be —

Free from photographs and the shame.

While I am here, tears streaming.

Out of my mind, of my head,

Did you burn memories seething?

They never left my soul, they’re undead,

While I’m here, tears streaming.

You and her, it’s the cut deepest,

Never heals, it bleeds; you beaming

A baby’s breath; life makes me weak.

While I’m here, tears streaming.

At times, I’m over you completely,

Then, an image leaves me grieving.

Heart of the girl, a heart too sweet.

While I’m here, tears streaming.

Conversation wouldn’t aid, I —

Learn to sew up all broken seams.

Especially in sleep, where I cry,

While I’m here, tears streaming.

A few hours, a few days and —

I’ll be fine again —breathing.

Didn’t have much, nothing so grand.

While I’m here, tears streaming.

Let go, let me free, unburden me,

Stop snipping my wings, inhaling

The past’s ashes, it chokes me,

I was here, tears dried; now I’m free.

November Notes: Poem – Day 10 –  Tanka – “Air Space” #amwriting #novembernotes #music #poetry

Today’s prompt song is “Air” by Rayvon Owen.

——

“Air” – Rayvon Owen

———

http://www.pinterest.com

——-

Holding onto air,

Nothing even their, it’s all–

Turning into air.

Can’t make something from nothing.

Can’t take back time, do-over.

—–

Your silhouette,

It’s disappearing into —

Air so thin, can’t breath.

All we have is a shattered–

Empty past, hanging by a thread.

—–

We were never whole,

The definition of good.

We were always flawed,

We never healed, didn’t —

Accept, when we saw the end.

——

Splinters of glass hurt,

When embedded in my skin,

Pieces of the past,

They’re a pain felt rawly,

A pain that doesn’t improve.

——

The clock ticking by,

You grasp for my form — I’m air,

You can keep trying.

You know your holding thin air,

Us, we’re gone, invisible.

——

Let the lights burn out,

We can’t raise what’s  cold and dead.

The past remains gone,

Stop holding onto air, it —

Isn’t real; we’ve both dissolved.

——

Life’s not fair, I’m sure —

Later we’ll know we did right.

Now we gasp for air,

Let conversation cease, fade.

Nothing to say, it’s been said.

Blitz poem - 48 Lines, MindLoveMisery's Menagerie, My Thoughts, Nature, Poetry, Writing

Photo Challenge: Poem – Blitz – “Still As Your Breath” #amwriting #poetry

Thanks to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for this week’s photo prompt.

In dress of Emerald green unfurling,

Unfurling and scampering, the forest behind

Behind her hair of onyx locks

Behind her the forest forms, her dream image

Image of imp, earthen worm silk for her gown

Image of child feet bare on the ground

Ground echoes as she pants and runs

Ground misting with fog on grey lake

Lake where the monsters swim

Lake where they slither and with trickery bid

Bid her come swim

Bid her come beneath the surface

Surface of lake reflective mirror

Surface of mind, smoke cascading from hair

Hair the metaphor of her thoughts

Hair rising with caustic smoke

Smoky, the sky is dim and grey

Smoky, her thoughts show disarray

Disarray of the mind and she scatters

Dissray of her feet on dying grass

Grass beloved in spring

Grass lush and wild around her

Her the woman, the sprit

Her the goddess –only in her mind

Mind overflowing she burns black thoughts

Mind recreates as she destroys smoke black

Black as her hair, the ravens are jealous

Black as her pupils, focused on running

Running from life, imp of nature

Running until lungs burst

Burst with her blackness inhaled

Burst with the need for fresh air

Air breathed in and out

Air the forest created

Created as she makes trees

Created to help her and us breathe

Breathe the freshest lake air

Breathe and feel free to live

Live but how?

Live but why? She’s black soot scent

Scent of tar from smoke

Scent of wildflower and rain

Rain and her dress greener still grows

Rain and her tears are diamonds

Diamond of nature stop fleeing

Diamond of nature flawed — just stand

Stand silent and inhale fresh mountain air

Stand and inhale new beginning — be still

Still as your breath and the silence gives rest

Still as your breath and the silence gives rest.

Thank you to MindLovesMisery’s Menagerie for hosting this week’s double prompt:

Laura Bloomsbury

———

Black and white can change,

Become the most flaming bright of —

Colours; yet we’re like —

Dorothy on her Kansas —

Farm, not realizing life is grey.

Never seeing technicolor.

——–

If mountains are but smoke,

No one who said those words knew,

How burning orange and —

Yellow looks when your skin is —

Seared; the mountain spit lava clear.

Blew her top, melted downwards.

——-

On to the town who,

Had little idea but should —

Have known this day,

No technology clued.

Their mountain could release Hell,

Sulphurous smelling, burnt Hell.

—-

Poisonous gases,

Leaking down to the town folk,

No chance had they when,

Ashes fell like snow.

The worst kind of snow signals,

The ire of the mountain’s breath.

——-

In stores, on boardwalks,

Going about their day the same.

When she erupted,

No one cared at first.

But the ash and gases came,

Killing to begin, before —

—–

Lava reached familiar,

Buildings, the library.

Homes, grocery stores, work.

Yet the sky was filled,

She billowed out her smoke rings,

And she was just beginning.

——-

Threy should’ve known to —

Leave earlier but no one,

Takes responsibility;

To late to lay blame.

Run far and fast, lava spews.

Keep going magma flows, kills.

——

No Dante’s Peak is —

This; only mother nature’s,

Roaring and giving,

Life as she takes it.

Many die unaware, don’t see,

Never knew today would be —

The end: waiting done,

Here comes the promised one near.

Yet some survived it.

Never took lightly,

Those words: A Mountain is noth –

ing but smoke — they lived through it.

—–

Those who rebuilt knew,

As the lava and fire burnt their —

Homes, loved ones to crisps.

Beware the mountain;

Geologists trained don’t know,

When she’ll yield furious wrath.

Poem: Diamanté – ” Fire, Phoenix, Light, and Darkness” #poetry #amwriting #music

“Just Like Fire” – P!nk

——

Fire,
Scorching, Singeing.

Destroying, Cleansing, Burning all.

Sparks inside me, embers glowing.

Remenants of yesterday dying.

Acrid smell, Burnt scent, Dusty death.

Blowing winds, Becoming but —

Ashes.

——–

Fire,

Flaming, Fluid heat,

Interrupting life, Avenging, Lighting pathways.

Devastating the place called home.

Lighting the way back to safety, when enclosed.

Luminous candle, Glowing street lamp, Gleaming stars.

Beaming, Brighten’s with —

Light.

——

Ashes,

Grey silt, Smokey remains.

Leftovers, Burnt black-wood, Coughing fits.

From the ashes, rises the grand Phoenix.

Still the Phoenix becomes the fire.

Spreading fast, Blackening souls, Killing life.

Warmth, Hearth,

Fire.

—–

Phoenix,

Reddish feathers, Flying past,

Wings spanning, Soaring fast, Exploring the sky.

The fire brings the smoke to rise in plumes,

The smoke also signals rebirth — to live again.

Light in Darkness, Glistening stars, Glazing flame.

Hope in , Glory of —

Light.

—–

Light

Beaming, Revealing,

Unravelling mystery, Untwisting falsehood, Enlightening knowledge.

Shadow has no place to hide from light;

Darkness loves the corners hidden.

Nightmares, Souls which quake, Fear Whispers,

Gloomy, Depressing,

Darkness.

—-

Dark,

Twilight falling, Shaded sky,

Creeps in Shadow, Blackening, Opaqueness.

Not a breath of light or air to spare in life;

Darkness in death, leads to despair without hope.

Taking Cover, Teasing Fate, Testing Boundaries.

The End, Fini,

Death.

—-

Death,

Scythe wielded, Bones rattling,

Soul gone, Decaying body, Empty shell.

The dead will rise at the end of days;

But until then, those of light stay in rays.

Breath of freshest air,  No worries, No sorrow,

Peace, Promise Kept,

Heaven.

—–

Fire,

Blazing inferno, Uncontrollable,

Crisp hearts, Burnt hands, Wild fire’s agony.

Fire cooks our food, the first discovery of man;

But fire too, is life and rebirth; death is not the end.

Renewing life, Forest regrowing, Animals returning,

Hopeful for, Breath of —

Life.

Poem: Alouettes – “Star: Never Flicker Out” #amwriting #poetry

http://www.wildwoodcircle.com

———

My prayer for you is,

That you’re not a wisp,

Never a star flickering out.

That you shine boldly,

For what the years hold,

Pray you glimmer, bright, hot.

——–

Some lights end shortly,

May yours burn forte.

Be that diamond in the sky,

A jewel, valued highly.

Live your life, defy–

Limits, the odds; inspire.

——

Though sickness choke breath,

Though time steal your health.

Transform; the light, dazzling.

Take hold of our hands,

While we beg; understand,

Why our star’s unraveling.

——-

Surgery takes out,

Kills what darkness brought.

Shine on dear star; glow brave.

Save your light for strength.

Heal true at all lengths.

You’ll luminate soon; light saves.

—-

Shadows turn your gleam,

Black hole eats light’s beam.

The struggle for brilliance, pain.

You’ve got this dollie

God won’t let you stall.

Shooting star bright you’ll remain.

——

In all God’s glory,

He holds your story.

A star precious, with design.

You show fortitude,

A glib attitude.

Darling star falling, refined.

——

You’ve never been a wisp,

Effusive woman missed.

Pretty blond star, beauteous.

Vibrance, cheer; your gift,

Each visit uplift.

Never burn out, star bloom.

——

Live for millenias,

Prosper, wise light; will

Vivre; bold star falling.

Never flicker out,

Your battle cries shout.

Dear star blaze; for life brawling.
