Interview with LeeAnn – Animal Enthusiast

Welcome back to my biweekly interview series. Today I’m interviewing Lee Ann from the blogAnimals Are Feeling Beings Too. As LeeAnn’s blog focus is more on helping animals through her blog, the focus of this interview will be slightly different than past interviews.

1. LeeAnne, Please Tell Us About Yourself and Your Blog?

I have always been a quiet, deep-thinking, and observational person.Through deep-thinking and my tendency to observe, I noticed a lot of aspects about animals. Watching them, and paying attention to them, I fell in love with them.

As I am a quiet person, I feel I tend to get lost in the crowd much of the time. I noticed a similar thing often occurred with animals; they were getting lost in the crowd too when people didn’t pay attention and take care of them. Intrinsically, I felt their worth, their needs,  and I noticed the way some of them were not treated nicely. My passion for helping animals was born.

2. When Did You Begin Blogging ? What Does Writing and Blogging Mean to You?

I had taken classes for Web Design in 2013 and one of the assignments was to create a blog. My blog was my current blog: Animals Are Feeling Beings Too and I wrote on it occasionally over the next few years. However, in August 2016 I started blogging regularly. I have had different experiences with writing throughout my life.

Back in elementary school I first fell in love with poetry and writing (and my poetry teacher J). Since then, I have written several poems over the years, but only for my family and friends for special occasions such as weddings, graduations, and other special events. Currently, some of my responsibilities at work include writing newsletters and social media posts.

Blogging means everything to me because of what I write about. I adore animals and feel passionate about helping them. I have been trying to figure out my entire life how to utilize my love for animals. When the assignment came up in my course to create a blog, my teacher told me she thought I should continue with my ‘helping animal’ themed blog.

I guess you could say a light bulb went off in my head. It took me a few years to apply myself, consistently blogging. But I think I had troubles because I was burnt out from being on a computer all day between work and school. I write because I want to help animals by spreading the word about animals who are abused, the worth of animals, and our responsibility to care for them.

3. Where Do You Find Your Motivation and Inspiration to Write? Is There A Time Of Day You Prefer To Write?

Unfortunately, there are way too many people out there harming animals and not enough laws to protect the animals. This is where my inspiration and motivation comes from. I want to make a difference and ensure fewer animals are harmed. I also feel a lot of people are unaware of how much animal abuse exists and how few laws there are to protect animals (pets).I am hoping to bring light to these issues on my blog.

I am more alert and ‘fresh’ in the late morning after I have some coffee; however, because I have a full-time job, a lot of my writing and blog posts are done in the evening after work.

4. Do You Have Any Current Pet-Related Writing Projects or Hopeful Ones? Are You Planning on Publishing Anything Related to Animals?

My blog is my current and ongoing project. I am only six months into regular blogging, so I am still new at blogging. I am working hard at ‘getting my writing out there’ on animal issues. My hope is to grow my traffic, not for my sake, but for the sake of animals and to make a difference.

So far, I’ve not published anything other than blog posts. I have considered writing a children’s book on empathy towards animals someday. I believe since children are our future, teaching them to be considerate towards animals could make a huge difference on the way animals in the in years to come will be treated by their owners (etc.) I may also turn some of my blog posts into a book someday.

” I believe since children are our future, teaching them to be considerate towards animals could make a huge difference on the way animals in the in years to come will be treated by their owners (etc).” – LeeAnn

5. What Is Your Writing Process Like When Focusing on Animals?

As I mentioned, there is so much animal abuse going on, so there is not a lack of topics to write about. If I see a story on the web about an animal that was abused, I start thinking and the writing process for a post begins.

For example, after going to the Renaissance Festival I noticed an elephant chained to a contraption which only allowed him to move around in a circle giving people rides. I started thinking and when I was home, I wrote about this event and how awful it was for the poor elephant to be so confined and probably abused.

6. Do You Have Any Advice For Other Bloggers or on Advice on How People Can Help Animals in Need?

I am not a  ‘professional’ writer, but as another blogger said: “If you’re writing on a blog, you are a writer.” Writing and blogging are skills I and other writers improve on with time. I am still learning and growing as I learn more about blogging, particularly for my significant cause. As well on my blog’s About Page I wrote this about how people can aid animals:

“Supporting animal organizations is . . . one way I help animals . . . I write about a wide variety of topics and types of animals, and I usually share links so you can check out the organization/topic being discussed.

There are many ways we can all help animals. Donating items to shelters, writing letters, signing petitions, volunteering time at an animal organization, sharing my posts to spread the word, and much more.” – LeeAnn

7. Do You Have Anything Else You’d Like To Share With Readers on Helping Animals, Yourself, or Blogging?

I am attempting to give my blog real purpose (a means to an end) that my writing and blogging actually result in animals at risk or already being harmed, not being hurt anymore. I also want people to know  I do have a large variety of posts on my blog.

Some of the posts I write include Pet Tales, Vegetarian Recipes, Pet Care Tips, and Serious Topics such as Animal Abuse Issues. I also use pictures from other bloggers and Facebook Page followers. I post them in my posts called ‘Tuesday Tales.’

8. Do You Have Any Favorite Bloggers You Follow?

I enjoy different kinds of blogs, but I think my favorite blogs are when someone writes about their pet(s). I think it’s fun to see all those adorable pet photos and learn about various animals and their personalities. Oddly enough, I do not necessarily like to follow blogs that are about ‘animal activism.’ I applaud them but I find these blogs usually too graphic for me to handle.

9. Please Share With Us Some of Your Animal Related Blog Posts:

The post below was written when a young follower of mine contacted me to let me know she was inspired by my blog. She wrote a poem called “Animals Are Feeling beings Too” which she published on her blog.

Hoping to Make an Impact

By LeeAnn

November 17, 2016

I have been blogging (well…serious blogging) for a few months now. I have played around with my blog, changing & adding things like the “Tuesday Tales” where I share animal stories and “Sunday Pause (Paws)” where I encourage everyone to kick back & relax. On my “Vegetarian Challenge” page I try to add recipes every now & then. There hasn’t been an actual challenge yet, but maybe in the future. Also, I have been adding my favorite cruelty-free products to the “Links” page, adding some pictures of my cat, Cino and “Pet Care Tips.”

I will continue to add to these pages and keep a variety on my blog. But one thing that will not change is where my heart is, and that is helping the fight against animal cruelty.

This means some of my posts will not be so uplifting or fun. If I were to only do “happy” posts I wouldn’t be spreading the word about animal cruelty and therefore I wouldn’t be helping animals.

Something I saw on Facebook (or somewhere) not so long ago was this sentence, “The reason I dedicate myself to helping animals so much is because there are already so many people who dedicate their lives to hurting them.” Sadly, a true statement!

There are a lot of people who tell me they can’t stand to read or see anything about animal abuse because it bothers them too much. It bothers me A LOT too, but I can not turn my back on them. I want to encourage others not to either.

I recently have received a few great compliments from fellow bloggers about my blog. This makes me feel so warm & fuzzy. I also received a message from a young follower, named Leona, that said me and my blog inspire her, and that she wrote a poem and named it “Animals Are Feeling Beings Too.” I was overjoyed by this! It makes me think maybe I AM making an impact out there for the good of animals!

A Recent Tale

These past few weeks have gone by quickly and quietly for me. Sometimes it is lonely being the only one at home during the day (except for the dog) but I have become accustomed to it and actually like it. I miss the social interactions one experiences day to day at a job or going to classes as opposed to doing them via internet or correspondence but I have also been a woman who through out her life loves the quiet and having the house to herself. If I want to go out and be around people I do. I go to yoga, for a walk, to the mall, for coffee, and to visit friends but truthfully, I need the quiet to do my school work in and just to be at peace. There is such sensory pollution around certain places that I can’t help but like a peaceful house.

Lately, I have become use to seeing A, my boyfriend, every couple weeks and have become spoiled in that regard. The current shift A is on is his first 3 week shift in quite awhile so it will feel like a lonely long time once we get through those 3 weeks. Truthfully, I think the first week A is away is the hardest week and then in the second two weeks of his shift up North I become involved in my usual activities and plan more activities to do with friends that I don’t notice the length of time as much. When A comes to visit a couple of days we hang out and a third day we usually go out to a club, for dinner, or to a movie. Sometimes we shop but I often find this time of year between winter and spring, there is not much selection of clothing and shoes in stores. Especially since this year it has been so cold because of that damn Polar Vortex. But maybe spring has come to Edmonton. It is supposed to be 13 degrees Celsius next Sunday.

I finally was able to bother my family doctor enough so that he would call in this drug that is supposed to give me more energy and is often used in Chronic Fatigue cases. It is actually just an antidepressant called Elavin. It has actually helped me a lot but not the way I was thinking it would help me. Elavin works so that you sleep better and therefore, have an increase in energy. I think I might feel a tiny bit more energized but at this time, just starting the medication I am mostly too to tell. In fact, it has worked so well for me sleep wise that I was able to stop taking 700g of Gabepentin and melatonin. Tonight I am going to try to lower the dose of Clonazapam that I take to stay asleep in the night. If I can cut back my sleeping medications until I am only taking 1 or 2 pills instead of 8 and some melatonin, I’ll be extremely happy. Whether or not the drug will work as something that will re- energize me, that remains to be seen.

( Okay. I wrote this blog 2 different days so the truth is this drug Elavin is actually horrible for me. Once, the Gabepentin was out of my system I couldn’t sleep at night. But in the day, however, I would sleep all day and no amount of napping was enough to keep me awake. I began to feel “out of it,” agitated, very impatient, and anxious. So today I went off the Elavin and feel so much better. I’m a little tired in the day still but nothing compared to these last few days. But I think this is it for me for medication trial and error until science advances. I don’t know why I have a mood disorder or some type depression and why there is a physical cause to it and not a psychological? I don’t know why this would cause an extreme lack of physical and mental energy? It’s nice to have answers but sometimes I think not having a diagnosis that is known means there are less diagnosis’ to limit me and what I am capable of doing.)

I have finished project #3 for my editing course and only have 1 project left that I will work on next week. I finished reading the study guide, additional readings, and a good portion of the textbook and am happy about how the course is coming along. I only hope my marks reflect that. I am looking forward to being done Editing and to do my last Residential Design course starting mid- April. Hopefully, I am able to put enough time into the workload for that class. Come summer, I also want to do a second editing course to keep busy. What that will specifically be on yet I’m not sure. ( Today I received a B on my second assignment in editing and was happy with that).

The weekend was a loss due to my health issues but I went to the mall a few hours and did a few errands on the Saturday just to get out. This week I want to finish my editing assignment ( the final one) and go for coffee on Thursday. I also hope to start up a yoga routine again at home, I have fallen away from that lately. Additionally, I am paying close attention to Nikki my dog, who is on her second round of steroids for her rheumatoid arthritis. I hope it works this round, poor dog!

So, there is a recent tale on my life. Things are as usual.

A Bit of Everything

www.people.bu.edu
http://www.people.bu.edu

It’s a Thursday morning and there is much to do. I have an assignment to copyedit. I need to go through the newsletter a couple more times to catch all the mistakes. And then I have a 3rd assignment to start. I would like to have it done by the end of February. The assignment is a letter advocating for your client (the author) to your editor or publisher. There is a lot of reading left in Chapter 5 of the Study Guide, in the Appendix, and in the textbook. I just keep on going, hoping I can finish this course before the next one starts and that I have enough ‘good days’ that I can work on my class.

But in-between that I am reading the 3rd book by Sylvain Renard, Gabriel’s Redemption,

www.en.wikipedia.org
http://www.en.wikipedia.org

and you know when you get hooked in a series of books that you just have to finish them. Especially when you get to the 3rd book in the series. And next I am thinking of an interesting undertaking. Since so much of this series from Sylvain was based upon Dante’s Inferno and it is probably free on Kobo, I am thinking that I must read that. I had heard of it in English class, heard that Milton’s Paradise Lost that I studied somewhat related, so I am excited to be reading some classic literature again, in the English version, not the Italian version of course.

photoshopI think that I am not quite done talking about weight and body issues. The problem is I read an article on it and I think how ridiculous it is especially to the extent in which magazines, companies, etc. are photoshopping their models. Now, I’ve always felt that a little photoshopping is good. Enhancing the beauty of the model that is already there, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with that except that the media has different standards of beauty. Maybe we just need to try to leave models looking the way they look without photoshop except for obvious flaws that no one would like showing such as acne or a tattoo in certain pictures. But sometimes it is too much. I recently saw on an entertainment show a spread for Nicole Kidman who is not young anymore. She looked like she was 22 years old when I’m pretty sure is or is nearly double that age. There is something wrong with that because that is not an attainable look for anyone, including Nicole Kidman. And she is beautiful just the way she is at the age she is. I also watched a slide show where a plus size model was thinned down from her size 12 or so silhouette to a size 4. There was nothing wrong with the way the model looked before, she just looked normal, so why would you change her?

I have never wanted to model before really. It has to do with being in the spotlight. But after some special professional pictures for

www.returnofkings.com
http://www.returnofkings.com

my boyfriend and myself, and some portraits for family and relatives I decided it was actually really fun. I could see how I looked in the pictures the photographers took on the camera and I looked good. Friends told me I looked good. And the strangest thought crossed my mind that if I was tall enough and young enough I would consider plus size modeling because I really think that women and girls need to see what a real woman looks like with little computer perfecting besides blemishes, shiny skin, and bad lighting. Some people would probably say you should show those too but I believe there are good uses for photoshop. But more than that, I believe that we need to as a society step out of that box where we adore thin woman and start showing an ideal that is normal size healthy woman. I have spoken of it so much before and maybe too much. But it saddens me that people would have so much conversation on this subject and that there would be so little change. Dove had the right idea a few years back, even though those commercials annoyed me. Anyways there is one magazine online that I wanted to share with you that I think is great for showing plus sized models while maintaining the look and feel of a magazine like Instyle. The magazine is called DARE and it’s an online magazine that you can take a look at here: http://daremag.uberflip.com/i/126563 .

But that’s all I have to say on that I promise for a good long while. I am watching Team Canada Men’s vs. Norway now on CBC. I am excited to say we are up 2-0. Hopefully, that will be an easy win for us but surprisingly, we are not scoring as easily as I thought. But I hope you are enjoying the Olympics for whatever country you might be from. I love the Winter Olympics, for Canada they are the most exciting!

Also, decided to give up Pepsi for good. The only exception will be once a week when I start my night class as I can’t stay awake without it. Otherwise, I’ve been drinking water and following my diet exactly. I have lost 2 lbs in 3 days so that it pretty exciting. It takes 21 days they say for you to get into the habit of doing something so I’m hoping I can stay in this habit. I have drunk a lot of water which I needed to do before but didn’t really do and I have 1 treat a day now a low-fat granola bar that has chocolate on the outside.

www.carrentalworld.net
http://www.carrentalworld.net

Otherwise, I have dealt with a car rental issue my boyfriend and I had a car rental place. They claimed these little scratches under the car that you had to lean over to see, and were from winter like ice, something no one can help in Edmonton, were damage. The manager was so rude to my boyfriend and I and A refused to sign for the damages. The manager wouldn’t give us a ride home, she told us to walk away and get out of the store. She said she didn’t know anything about cars but that the plastic part of the bumper underneath of the car needed painting and she wouldn’t rent the car out to us even though she had said she would before on the phone, because she couldn’t trust us not to damage the car. As if we did whatever invisible damage she saw on purpose. I have never dealt with someone so un-customer-serviced oriented especially dealing with a client of 2 years. Her tone, her mannerism, was angry and defensive. I was not impressed at all and we had to pay $40.00 cab to get back to my boyfriends apartment.

So up’s and downs this week. But overall pretty good! So two beauty blogs coming out soon for some more LUSH and Benefit and products. Also, maybe I will share with you some of the hair videos I like that are great for easy everyday styles you can do with your hair that take minutes. Take care
