Lauren worked at the Starbucks until 12:00 am at night. She thought after a time, she would feel safer and more comfortable walking home in the dark. Her apartment was only four-blocks away.

This evening she felt particularly on edge and the noise of metal dropping somewhere nearby, echoed in the night.

Lauren began to shake, she had one block to go when she started to run. Then there was only the front door to get into her apartment. She hurriedly opened the door and screamed when she felt someone touch her arm.

“Calm down Lauren, it’s only me. Your neighbour Alice. I’m headed over to my sisters. Brandy and her kids are all ill with the flu and I’m going to help her with the little ones.”

“Oh Alice,” Lauren said trembling. She squeezed Alice’s arm, happy she was there. “I’m sorry about Brandy and her kids, I didn’t mean to freak out on you. It scares me walking home in the dark alone.”

Alice clicked her tongue, “A girl of your age shouldn’t be alone at night.” When she bared her wolf-like teeth, Lauren knew it was too late.

My teary eyes on the buildings below,

Keeping careful watch o’r those homeless souls.

And since the sky is filled with fire and with smoke.

Praying, keep careful watch o’r forlorn folk.

If we die in fire, keep us together,

Flames swirling higher, stairs filled with smoke, soon –

Rising farther into the night sky bright,

Watch flames burn stronger, apartment alight.

I see fire, fire in our whole home; Such fire

I can’t even breathe; I see fire, can’t respire.

There’s fire hollows my soul, blood curdling free,

All smoke, no breeze, hope they’ll remember me.

And if we should die tonight, we’ll both burn,

Raise glasses of wine, ’till we don’t feel spurned.

Calling Lord Father, prepare us as thee will,

Watch the flames burn our home, neighbours heard scream.

Confined in building blocks, enclosed, we’re remains

No fireman came, desolation it stays

“I can’t believe we ever lived there.”

“Yeah it’s a dump, but we didn’t have much choice at the time, Minnie.”

“Oh Henry, we had such good times there. It was dirty and there were too many drug dealers and thugs. But somehow we made it home alive each night. We huddled inside, afraid of every noise. But we had each other always.”

“You got used to the noise after awhile,” Henry said.

“Then we were finally done school and had real jobs. In a couple of years, we bought our first condo and I had Tracy. The condo was a much nicer place and in a family neighbourhood,” Minnie remarked.

“Life it goes by so fast,” Henry said squeezing Minnie’s shoulder gently.

“What Henry, where are we?” Minnie suddenly said. “You don’t look like Henry? Well a bit but you’re old. Why are they tearing down our apartment Henry?”

Henry sighed. Minnie was gone from him again.

Melly lived in an apartment in a senior’s lodge which included a stone terrace. She potted flowers and made an effort to make her terrace pretty.

Melly told her friend Emily: “I can’t stand those boys biking; they unearth my plants at night, when I’m trying to sleep.”

Their friend Brett asked Melly: “Do you think it might be cats? I see those boys on their bikes and they always politely say ‘Hello’ to me.”

Melly made a point of ignoring Brett — whom she secretly liked. She was so obnoxious and rude, he left to go sit in his apartment alone.

Melly awoke that night when she heard noises. Peering outside, she saw the boys ride by on their bikes. Then she flushed when she saw cats digging up her flowers. She mentally composed her apology to Brett.

The Funky Munky was a magic shop owned by Velma. She lived in the first apartment, above her shop.

Curtis walked into Velma’s shop one night, he was hallucinating and ill. “Please help me,” he begged, “I think I’ve been poisoned and I’m going to die.”

Velma felt his forehead: “You’ve come to the right place. You’ve been poisoned and I can help you for a favour in return.”

“Anything.”

Velma began to add liquids to a glass. She handed the ‘potion’ to Curtis who downed it and passed-out; he awoke the next morning on a couch.

“Do you feel better?” Velma asked him.

“Yeah, I feel fantastic. What did you give me?” Curtis said.

“A Funky Monkey,” Vera said smiling.”It contained Banana Liquor, White Rum, Malibu Rum, Pineapple Juice, and magic dust.”

“It was a drink, not a potion?”

” You were poisoned Curtis. The drink was magical and removed the poison from your body, hydrated you, and made you sleep deeply.” Velma said.

“It’s my favourite alcoholic drink, Curtis. I became ill because I drank too many of them once. Your favour to me was taking away my repulsion for my favourite drink. However, a Funky Monkey will now make you ill if you even smell one.”

Curtis had no words but Velma had pity on him and snapping her fingers, sent him home to his own bed where he would remember nothing.

Writing 101: NonFiction – A Hopeful Trip to Vancouver. #everydayinspiration #amwriting

Today’s Writing 101 prompt has to do with maps, picking a location and writing about it.

——–

Downtown, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Google Maps

I would like to have a little vacation this summer. I want to spend a week at most, in Vancouver, BC. My plan is to use airmiles for two plane tickets and book an apartment through AirBnB, to share with my brother located in downtown Vancouver.

I have to do more research for this trip. I wanted to see if I could get flights to Vancouver first but the airmiles website is being difficult and it’s not showing any available flights to Vancouver. What good is saving up your airmiles if you can’t use them when you would like to? I have looked at booking flights without airmiles and there are a ton of flights flying back and forth daily from Edmonton to Vancouver and vice versa, so there is no reason I shouldn’t be able to buy a flight using airmiles.

I’m also searching for a few activities to do in Vancouver. Since the Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver not so long ago, I would like to see the Olympic torch. I want to shop in Vancouver and I would like to go to Stanley Park and Granville island.  I would also like to visit a pub or two and see something at a local gallery or museum. If I can get out to a beach near Vancouver, that would be great as well. Most places I can take the train to and from and I believe there is a bus you can buy a two-day pass to and use it to see the tourist destinations in Vancouver.

I’v been to Victoria on Vancouver Island, but never the city of Vancouver itself so I’m excited to check the city out. Hopefully, I’m able to plan the trip for some time soon. Thanks for reading.

Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner: You Leave, I’m not.

“The last time, everything fit in three duffles…” well, was never. I mean I have been collecting memorabilia in a trunk since I was a baby.

My apartment has books I am not willing to give up. It is a place to do my makeup and style my hair. It has a mini office, the refinished desk near the front door. The papers I’ve organized to do with taxes and health benefits are all there. The bedroom has our built in closet and dressers filled with my clothes, purses, and shoes.

You are aware living in Canada you need clothes for at least three seasons? Winter being the worst because sweaters, winter coats, and boots take up a great deal of space.  And when the weather is warm you need various kinds of shoes dependant on the occasion.

What about the furniture I made-over with my time and talent? What about the bed I purchased with sheets, pillows, and a duvet and covers? What about the lamps, couches, and curtains? The appliances and electronics?

You want me to go. . . it’s my apartment. I lived here first. You want me to fit everything in those three duffle bags. You’re crazy. You can’t make me leave, that’s your job man whore… (shove). Oh, you fell and hit your head on the stairs. Call your own ambulance.

Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers: A Nosy Neighbour

Gia sat in her fourth floor apartment on the balcony. She looked regretfully at her swollen ankle, then down at the street below. The inhabitants of Dawson Street were a collectively an interesting bunch. Like the apartments which were ramshackle and colourful, so the inhabitants were artsy, brilliant, but a bit odd.

Gia wasn’t even surprised when she saw a mini hippy vehicle painted in multicolored flowers pull up across the street. She watched a grey-haired man get out of the car. Later, she saw him across the street at the balcony across from hers, talking to a man she knew named Ralph. The grey-haired man and Ralph tussled.  Suddenly, Ralph was pushed off his balcony and landed on the street on his head.

Gia covered her mouth in horror as she saw what took place. Then she realized the guy with the grey-hair was staring at her. Gia raced to lock her door and to call the police. But the man who killed Ralph arrived first.

Flash Fiction For Aspiring Writers: Our Apartment

Everyone knew about the apartments around the tennis courts. They were old and decrepit and most people didn’t want to live there. But the rent was cheap, really cheap and my friend and I decided that it was the perfect place for two university student’s trying to save money. Plus, there was a liquor store right around the corner and nobodycared if you partied here.

They apartment was clean enough or so I thought, until one day I see this rat scurrying across the muted yellow living room carpet. ” A rat” I screamed, at my roommate Laura, ” a rat.” I hated rats and so did Laura. We chased it and left traps for it with peanut butter.

At night in my room I was so thankful the carpet was right against the crack in the door so no rats could get in and I always left my room door closed. But suddenly something fell onto the bed right on my head. I screeched and turned on the lights. Sure enough a rat had dropped from light fixture in my room and he had three little friends up their with him.
