Flash Fiction for the Aspiring Writer: Clang with the Trolley #amwriting #JudyGarland #flashfiction

Each Christmas it is traditional for my family to watch Judy Garland’s Meet Me in St. Louis. The more times I watch it, the more it and Garland’s dazzling voice pull me in. By now I know the songs by heart and if not all of them, then at least the well-known “Trolley Song.”

The scene of Judy Garland’s character singing on the trolley is what comes into my mind whenever I see one and why today, I feel that I need to ride the trolley, wherever it may be going. Sure, it may take me places I have no idea where I am or why I ended up where I did. But it will also lead me to unexpected and interesting city jewels, waiting for discovery.

As Garland’s character in the movie  did not want to leave St. Louis but at the same time possessed a yearning to explore, I have a connection to the trolley and wanting to explore the city because of  Garland’s famous song and her character’s adventurous spirit.

It’s called a Lego graveyard,

A container full of beheaded,

Small men —

—–

A variety of pleasant looks,

Others with face’s of ire,

 No heads.

——

The girl and boy they build fast,

Tear bodies from heads not knowing,

Bad thoughts.

—–

—–

A pile of joy for building kids,

A sight of horror for parents;

Gold teeth.

——

As Nazi’s removed in death camps,

Nothing dulls pain of Jewish soul; just —

Worth teeth.

——

A few years ago I saw an excellent movie made by and including George Clooney and some of the regular actors found in his movies — Matt Dameon (etc.) called The Monuments Men. “The film follows an Allied group from the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program that is given the task of finding and saving pieces of art and other culturally important items before Nazis destroy or steal them, during World War II (Wikipedia).

One of the aspects of the film that overwhelmeingly struck me as awful was as these men went into underground mines and other places the Nazi’s hid priceless artwork, were barrels full of teeth with gold fillings that had been pulled from Jewish Concentration camp prisoners. This is just one mote terrible act of numerous actions done to Jewish prisoners slated to die by Nazis in death camps. Upon researching this, I found the practice by Nazi’s to be accurate even within the context of the movie.  I read that in some cases, the Nazi soldiers forced other prisoners to do this job form them and no pain numbing drugs or even alcohol was provided.

As well, the movie is based on a fictitious novel but the story itself is based off of real life events that are to some extent historically accurate. In the film, these American men who reclaimed the art work left the gold filled teeth and of course that was the right thing to do. Anyways, in my warped mind, those barrels full of gold teeth fillings are what these lego heads reminded me of — sorry for the imagery!

This article The Monuments Men (2014) compares the movie and the real life Monument’s men. It answers some interesting questions about WWII Nazi History and Hitler’s reasons behind stealing such a wealth of art.

Quidditch played above the ground below, I zoom,

Avoiding bludgers on my sleek broom stick.

The beaters nearby to keep me safe, I’m slick.

No one thought to ask why the dragons so loomed,

Why there coming pronounced such grave doom.

The chasers zoom ’round, to find the quaffle,

While the keeper guards the goals, I waffle.

Snitch in view, I, the seeker on my broom.

But the roars and the fire reach closer,

We’re becoming antsy as such fearsome —

Dragons fly into the field, some they screech.

No one sees, how short a lifetime is made,

When you’re flying for your life, no exposure,

If revealed, dragons will take you to keep.

I told them I couldn’t do it anymore because the hours were too long and even after twenty-years, I never felt recognized for my achievements. Management said I was a ‘nobody’ that there was nothing different about me from any other employee they dealt with, but then I found out other storm troopers felt the same way I did. Just because we’re clones doesn’t mean we do everything exactly the same, that some of us aren’t better workers than others –so here we are brainstorming ideas of how we can as individuals stand out in The Empire and to the Emporer; I’m excited things have gone this far.

Poem: Free Verse – Thoughts of the Mockingjay #amwriting #poetry #fiction #symbolic

Credit: Wikia

———

Mockingjay, pretty bird or elegant deadly queen?

A woman, a creature of dystopia and mythology

If there’s one bird to be, it would be a Mockingjay

Though I know they’re imaginary,

Mockingjays are real as symbols of courage.

Birds which don’t break, they carry on;

Nature outlasting outlandish experiments,

Reinventing, Mother Earth evolving and re-working,

What humans would call a mistake;

Yet these Jays cannot be hidden away, they’re fierce warriors risen.

——

As a Mockingjay, could I fly close to the sun?

Icarus (I think) burned off his majestic wings doing such a deed,

 I’d think a celestial queen of Mockingjays is smarter

She’s a stealthy bird whose whistle, repeats any tune heard,

Her mimickery can be confusing to her enemy.

A Mockingjay queen, would keep her scars hidden,

Safe beneath feathers which float, as hope;

Now fuzz, falling furiously as she grows, dropping downy —

Fast, no longer a chick adorned with puffiness

Now a full-blown black and white glory who sings life’s story,

The story of pain, betrayal, and loss;

Your average adventure and most tantalising tale.

Oh, what a Mockingjay can truly be,

When her heads adorned by sunlight and truth,

Choosing her battles and using her melody

The Melody you’re humming to yourself.

The sweetest songs of tears, quicksilver and liquid gold,

Molten metal glimmering

She burns with fire in her soul, though she is no mythical Phoenix;

Yet she rises from the ashes of society and science

She repeats your tunes, the echoes throughout her wild lands.

—–

You’ll never catch a Mockingjay, there’s wrath in her footprints,

Her anger caused, ignites an inner flame brilliant.

She’ll swoop from above and end you below,

The dignified woman, no longer laughing,

Going to battle, her war song a trill

The Mockingjay flies her wings fluid, her form grace designed.

A legendary bird of modern times,

Survival of the fittest crossing genetics;

Nature re-designs better than a science lab of horrors

Mockingjay is more than bird she is the huntress

The symbolic warrior of Ancient Greece and Rome – Artemis;

Bow with blazing pyrotechnics and lethal skill, pointed at her kill.

She lives and she dreams of the day, the war is long ended,

Where revenge and the cold stone hearted have no meaning.

Her desire is the melody so beautiful it thrills and heals

Enraptures a soul with clearly sung words.

She’s a warrior with golden platted lashes, winged at her pray;

A sultry seductress and and goddess flying free.

Mockingbird walks, she sways, feathers flocked close,

She’s as precious as the sparrow, calling lonely for her love.

She’d scarred, her heart torn

So strong but in need of help most of all.

Even symbols of strength such as her,

Who mimick a fictitious tune with ease;

Need more than survival to hope for.

She needs more than, a gilded bird cage.

Storyteller’s Abode

——–

Dorothy had a wonderful time with the munchkins in their village. She had been celebrated as the killer of the Wicked Witch of the East. The Good Witch Gelinda sent Dorothy down the yellow brick road with the deceased witch’s ruby red slippers adorning Dorothy’s feet.

The shoes were heels and uncomfortable. Dorothy soon regretted she could not take them off. She was leaning against a fence, resting her feet, when she thought the scarecrow beside her talked.

“What?” Dorothy asked the scarecrow, “Did you say something?”

The scarecrow continued making funny noises which was when Dorothy, a good Catholic, believed the scarecrow was possessed. She decided to burn the scarecrow and the demon out.

Lighting him afire she watched as the scarecrow screeched and fell in the middle of the yellow brick road, blackened hay and cloth all that remained.

Dorothy smiled to herself. Wicked witch of the East, check. Possessed scarecrow, check. Wizard of Oz here I come!

The sky was black and the woods silent. Even the stars seemed not to glimmer.

Rev. Jones was sweating hidden in the bushes. He could feel the shudders of fear coursing through his body. He held onto the cross at his throat.

Swish. Right near Rev. Jones head, an axe swung. Rev. Jones didn’t bother to look and see who was trying to behead him, he knew and he ran for the covered bridge, stark terror overcoming him as he tried to surpass the headless horseman.

It was to no avail, the horseman in his armour popped down from the top of the covered bridge as it ended. He twisted his axe, showing off, letting Rev. Jones know, there was no way to escape him.

Rev. Jones screamed as the axe hit his throat and his head was lopped off his body, eyes blinking a few moments afterward.

The headless horseman picked up Rev. Jones’ head and placed it in his bag. His mistress had three more heads for him to collect that night, and so he would.

—–

Ichabod Crane stared at the headless body at the front of the covered bridge.It was really dark last night, (the stone mason who had found the body said). But he was sure this bridge was the place of the murder. Ichabod had done all the appropriate medical tests, and figured out Rev. Jones the Vicor, had been beheaded around 1:00 am last night.

It was no surprise, prominent members of the community were dropping like flies. But Ichabod wondered as he had before when this nightmare last occurred, who was controlling the headless horseman now?

“I’m so tired we’ve been driving for hours,” Luc muttered to Felicia.

“Well there’s a motel up ahead. No nevermind. We’re not staying here honey.”

Luc yawned. “I can’t drive anymore tonight. It’s 12:30 a.m.”

“This motel has dusty rooms crawling with roaches and resembles the Bate’s Motel.”

“It’ll be fine you’ll see.” Luc said. He parked the car infront of Reception and came back with a key card. He showed Felicia the key card.

“I’ll sleep in the damn car. If you’re still alive in the morning I’ll come in and shower.”

“If you’re sure,” Luc said. “Want to see it first?” Felicia remained mute.

Luc opened room 62 which was surprisingly clean and modern. The beds and linens were new and the bathroom had been renovated.

He thought about getting Felicia but Luc was also fond of stretching out in a bed to himself.

——

It was 8:00 am when Luc received a knock on his room door. “Sir are you Luc Rareson?” A grisly state trooper asked.

“Yes,” Luc said tentivily.

“Is this your car?” The trooper pointed to a black SUV, half covered up.

“Yes, my girlfriend was sleeping in there. She refused to sleep in the room.”Luc said ashen.

“What’s your girlfriend’s name Mr. Rareson?”

“Felicia Mayer, where is she? What happened to her?”

“I’m sorry to tell you this sir but Felicia Mayer was murdered in your car last night.” The trooper said gently.

Tears leaked out Luc’s eyes.”I should’ve made her stay inside the room. I should’ve insisted.”

 “We have the individual who murdered Felicia in custody. He won’t tell us his real name. He was wearing an old goalie mask from hockey and says his name is Jason Voorhees.”

“Are you kidding me?” Luc sobbed.

“No,” the state trooper said.”Ironically enough, today is Friday May 13.”

Moral Monday`s Flash Fiction: The White Rabbit is Late

Thank you to Nortina from Lovely Curses for hosting the Moral Monday`s challenge. This week`s moral is: ” Better Late Than Never.” Excuse the lateness of this 100 word offering.

White Rabbit Alice and Wonderland
The White Rabbit – Alice in Wonderland – (www.underscoopfire.com)

Alice was waiting for the White Rabbit. In all her time in Wonderland, Alice couldn’t remember the White Rabbit having ever not been, exactly on time.

Alice began tapping the toes of her maryjane’s on the road. That intolerable sweeping dog was at it again, sweeping the path away.

“White Rabbit where are you?” Alice called. They were hours late for tea and the Mad Hatter would be crazy upset.

Exhausted, the White Rabbit arrived. Blood streaked his snowy fur.

Alice gasped, “What happened?”

“Hunters,” he said. “You humans and your hunters.”
