“Great Escape” by Gavin James

Giiselle shivered, slipping out of bed. It was 7:00 a.m. and Jimmy had been knocking on her front door for a half-an- hour. The knocking continued as she made a strong cup of Irish Breakfast tea. Stop! Just stop knocking, leave me alone!

The knocking ended and the long loud ringing of her doorbell commenced. Giselle swore, unlocking her front door and throwing the screen door open. “What the hell do you want? It’s 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday.”

Jimmy rolled his eyes. “You’re being rude. We need to talk about us, the way we were. Until we talk I can’t sleep, so why should I let you?”

Giselle grabbed her down coat and stepped outside. She zipped it up, burying her hands in her pockets. ” The good old days are gone, Jimmy. We’re not together. I don’t care if you can’t sleep.”

“Gigi, listen. What’s between us is more than attraction. I love you for real, always have.”

“We haven’t been together for a year. This isn’t some mistake we made that we can just laugh about someday. I was the other woman and you had a wife.”

Giselle polked Jimmy’s chest. “You decided to try to work things out with her; you chose Jasmine over me. Our affair was always a delicate game and now it’s over.”

Jimmy groaned, “You were my great escape at a dark time in my life. Jasmine divorced me months ago, I’m not married. We can start again.”

“We’ve been down this road before and I’m done. I forgive you but I can’t forget how much you hurt me.” He laid his hand on Giselle’s shoulder.

She turned gazing into his red-rimmed gray eyes. “You’re not the one for me, Jimmy. I was naive to think a married man like you ever was. It doesn’t matter that you’re divorced now.”

“Words as Weapons” by Birds

You can try to measure her angles,

Try to rationalize her curves.

Measure her so your comprehension of her is scientific;

But to math and science she’s absurd.

She has no rhyme or reason,

And you can’t make a person a logical equation.

Her body is not algebra,

Nor is she a kind of Cosine, Sine, or Tangent Angle.

You can use your words as methodical weapons,

To untangle her qualitative values,

But your words like swords will never cut to her core.

She’ll use her tears as numerous weapons,

And you can’t measure those.

Their quantitative value is beyond this world.

And she’s no statistical value,

She isn’t found in Trigonometry or in quadrilaterals.

And you’ll find no help about her in Epistemology;

Nor any philosophical math or logic.

Some things in life are beyond words and equations,

They aren’t logical or reasonable,

They are what they are.

And if you love all her curves and angles,

Can’t you let that be enough?

There’s no need to hypothesis,

To predict the future or the next hour,

So what if her face is symmetrical?

You can use your words as abject weapons,

To untangle her qualitative values,

But your words like swords will never cut to her core.

She’ll use her tears as numerous weapons,

And you can’t measure those,

Their quantitative value is beyond this world,

It’s called feeling and living in the moment,

Joyeux de Vivre or spontaneity,

No being afraid to let life happen,

To have Passion in the here and now.

Though you find it easier to measure and quantify your life,

Perhaps quality is a better goal?

And if such beauty you behold,

That you cannot find the exact right words,

There are other ways to show your love.

You can use your words as hurtful weapons,

To untangle her qualitative values,

But your words like swords will never cut to her core.

She’ll use her tears as more painful weapons,

And you can’t measure those,

Their quantitative value is beyond this world.

Before your mind starts to unravel,

In charts and graphs and parabolas,

Accept her for the flower she is,

Blooming without thought or reason,

In the midst of a freezing winter.

She is who she is and she isn’t a number,

Not even a poem,

She’s only and always a woman,

Her worth immeasurable,

Her love beyond equations and perfect values.

She is your summer in the bitter cold of life.

Three Line Tales: The Cat Came Back #3LineTales #nonfiction #music #memories

If you grew up in Canada you knew who the children’s entertainer Fred Penner was. Everybody knows and loves Fred Penner and his singing of our favourite kid’s songs such as “The Cat Came Back.” I was thrilled to have seen him live from about ten meters away on stage at a TEDTALK’S conference where I live in 2013; his message — music can save and change lives!

——

“The Cat Came Back” by Fred Penner

——

“The Cat Came Back” by Fred Penner

*****

Old Mister Johnson had troubles of his own

He had a yellow cat who wouldn’t leave its home

He tried and he tried to give the cat away

He gave it to a man goin’ far, far away.

*****

But the cat came back the very next day

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner

But the cat came back; he just couldn’t stay away.

(Give me a miao. Miaoooo!)

*****

Now the man around the corner swore he’d kill the cat on sight
He loaded up his shotgun with nails and dynamite

He waited and he waited for the cat to come around

Ninety seven pieces of the man is all they found.

*****

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner

But the cat came back; he just couldn’t stay away.

(Give me a miao. Miaoooo!)

*****

He gave it to a man going up in a balloon
He told him for to take it to the man in the moon

The balloon came down about ninety miles away

Where he is now, well I dare not say.

*****

But the cat came back the very next day

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner

But the cat came back; he just couldn’t stay away.

(Give me a miao. Miaoooo!)

*****

So he gave it to a man going way out West
Told him for to take it to the one he loved the best

First the train hit the curve, then it jumped the rail

Not a soul was left behind to tell the gruesome tale.

*****

But you now what?

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner

But the cat came back; he just couldn’t stay away.

(Give me a miao. Miaoooo!)

*****

Now the cat was a possessor of a family of its own

With seven little kittens till there came a cyclone

Blew the houses all apart and tossed the cat around

The air was full of kittens, and not a one was ever found.

*****

But the cat came back the very next day

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner

But the cat came back; he just couldn’t stay away.

(Give me a miao. Miaoooo!)

Sing it all again!

*****

But the cat came back the very next day

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner

But the cat came back; he just couldn’t stay away.

(Give me a miao. Miaoooo!)

Louder Miao (Miaoooo!)

November Notes: Poem – Day 16 – Free Verse “Think Thoroughly” #poetry #anwriting #writing #music

Before I start, I wanted to share this blog post, a list of the 27 best books on writing!  Hope it helps some of you. Have you read any of the books or do you own any of them?

27 Of The Best Books On Writing!

Today’s prompt is “Sweet Serendipty” by Lee DeWyze.

—–

I’m not of those women who will assure you,

You can get by, by the skin of your teeth.

That life is simply chance, fortuitous

I think you’re inexperienced,

You don’t see the entire picture,

Each of us is a piece in the mosaic, the grand design.

—–

Perhaps since your famous, you’ll buy two pairs of jeans?

But not caring about the seams of your pants,

Them being too loose — it’s a guy thing.

Sorry to ruin your charade, life is more than —

Your own version of serendipity

Events that occur to us can be wickedly sad.

—–

Whether we learn and/or hurt — there’s  a reason,

An intelligent designer has time arranged,

I don’t worry, for different reasons — His plans give security,

If you land on your feet, you’re one lucky guy.

I guess the fates are angry, their scissors keep snapping.

To me its obtuse to believe blindly in chance.

——

There are times I believe in spontaneity,

But there’s a time and a place with —

A kind of reasoning called: calculated risks.

I’m unsure why you don’t think ahead (don’t play chess).

I’m not old but I think I’ve experiences you won’t,

Be carefree at heart, but realize —adult responsibility.

——

You’re blessed with your health, go where you want,

I think, there’s been few troubles to scar you.

You sing empty songs, I find little depth,

Serendipity isn’t chance, it’s a miracle unfurled.

Behind the scenes action, you haven’t foreseen.

Glad you’re fine, but you’re missing a few screws.

——

It’s not that I’m bitter; it’s not that I don’t see,

What your trying to say in your round about way.

I’m saying that life, I’ve learned, is never a fluke,

We have minds to think and consider — to use.

Despite ineptness, your kind heart shows true,
Next hit song —think your lyrics thoroughly through.

Photo (Collage) Prompt: Poem – Free Verse – “Angel Down, Angel Down” #amwriting #poetry #angeldown #ladygaga

Lady Gaga Live – ” Angel Down”

I’m so thrilled with Lady Gage’s new album. I love her dance and pop-music stuff but her new songs, some of them go deep. This is one of those songs and I used the lyrics “Angel Down” for this poem. What I love is how in the video she is live, and sounds the same as if you were listening to her on her new album. Talented singer!

——–

She built her life, she built it strong, made it so —

It wouldn’t fall;but you can fortify —

The keep, make it so no one can slip in,

There are always cracks within perfection;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

——-

You can see the lines forming before she breaks,

Memories from the past she thought would save.

She’s safe –an illusion broken when the mirror —

Of life shatters within her face, she’s beat;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

——

Trapped in a birdcage, no song to sing,

Her tunes aren’t lucid and her wings are clipped,

Such dreams as a young woman, such glad times,

Now she’s angry, so frustrated — life’s a lie;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

——

Paints her makeup mask, hide the mirror’s blood tracks,

She thinks she’s imperfect tries to conceal —

New dress, she’s pretty, long legs on display yet,

She can’t hide feelings, she doesn’t fit in here;

Angel Down, Angel Down

—–

He said heels were stupid, girls can’t walk on —

Four-inch needles; yet they made her happy.

Night of the dance, stumbled; wore light blue chucks,

Sitting on the radio at the party crying;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

——

Years pass, another day spent sifting in,

Her see-through life, on clothing racks, she —

Attempts to find the perfect fit,  but she —

Knows like her, it’s elusive, can’t be found;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

——-

Music saves some, for others it magnifies

A hurt and hole inside her –can God even fill?

Remembering hideaways, experiences —

To fill the void within, smile with tears dripping;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

——-

Time in lavish living rooms, won’t make her,

Feel love she’s so denied; she can’t even —

Love her own body, isn’t what it was,

She fingers trinkets bought, fears with tears smear;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

—-

Jewel she thought would invoke good memories,

Fill her with hope and joy again; sharp pains of —

Her past; but now her wings have been pried off,

She’s a habiscus plucked and dying slow;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

—–

Packing suitcases, her body trembles,

She’s going on journey; her state of mind —

Broken; but she’s trying to heal and she —

Prays new memories, stop her rapid descent;

Angel Down, Angel Down.

—–

Please somebody, please help an Angel Down and —

Unlock her cage –the one she created,

Show her some love, let her taste freedom.

Be someone she can trust, so she won’t fade;

Angel Down, Angel Down

—–

Angel found her feet and flew,

Sailed above clouds anew;

The sun glints of her smile and–

She’s brand new bird who trills;

Angel Found,  Angel Found.

A Mixed Bag

——

Caden wasn’t sure how he arrived at the park; his feet had walked themselves there. He sat on a park bench feeling empty and worthless. In front of him sat an old Chinese stove, but he gave it little thought.

He’d lost Caroline for real this times and Caden didn’t know how to get her back. Lyrics from the song playing in the pub as she walked away from him, were on a continuel loop in his mind; she loved that song. He sighed, begging his mind to forget the painful lyrics.

“She’s imperfect but she tries, she is good but she lies. She is hard on herself, she is broken and won’t ask for help. She is messy but she’s kind, she’s is lonely –most of the time. She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie; she is gone but she used to be mine.”

Caden hadn’t ever felt so low. What did a man do when the woman he thought he’d stay with forever disappeared and wouldn’t talk to him?

No one seemed to know where Caroline was. He had almost cried in front of her Dad saying he only wanted to apologize and win her back. Caroline’s Dad patted Caden on the back saying,”Things will get better soon.”

Caden stared at the odd Chinese Stove wondering what its purpose was. He attempted to distract himself with the stove as the lyrics from that damn song floated back to him:

“If I’m honest I know I would give it all back for a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two. For the girl that I knew who’ll be reckless just enough, who’ll get hurt but, who learns how to toughen up when she’s bruised . . . she is gone but she used to be mine.”

Caden pressed his hands against his ears, trying to block the words out.

Suddenly, Caroline was standing in front of him, “How did you get here?” He asked her.

She gazed at him, “You look horrible Caden. Did I do that to you?”

He gasped shocked at seeing her, truly there now sitting beside him. Caden couldn’t hold back, he cried into Caroline’s neck as she stroked his hair; he held onto her tightly.

“I thought you would never forgive me,” he said.

“It’s alright,” she crooned to him, “I’m not leaving you ever again.”

Caroline was still Caden’s girl.

Three Line Tales: Songs on Fire #3Linetales #lyrics #music

Thanks to Sonya of Only 100 Words for hosting 3 Line Tales:

——

Dan Carlson

——–

1.”She’s just a girl, and she’s on fire; hotter than a fantasy, longer like a highway; she’s living in a world, and it’s on fire; feeling the catastrophe, but she knows she can fly away; oh, she got both feet on the ground; and she’s burning it down; oh, she got her head in the clouds; and she’s not backing down; this girl is on fire . . .”

Alicia Keys “Girl On Fire”

——–

2. “After I have traveled so far; we’d set the fire to the third bar; we’d share each other like an island; until exhausted, close our eyelids . . .”

Snow Patrol – “Set The Fire to The Third Bar”

——–

3. “I’m a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm; and the scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold; my blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones; it keeps my veins hot, the fire’s found a home in me; I move through town, I’m quiet like a fight; and my necklace is of rope, I tie it and untie. . .”

Lorde -“Yellow Flicker Beat”

——-

Decided to try some lyrics this week. This prompt made me think of many songs and how we use fire to describe so many feelings, situations, and experiences in life. There is fire in everything.

Poem: Haikus – ” Two Can Keep A Secret, If One of Us Is Dead.”

Just playing around in this poetry piece. I started from the beginning, watching Pretty Little Liars on Netflix. What first struck me on the second episode, was the theme song by The Pierces. It had such beautiful poetry and was catchy, so I had to play with it in my writing.

“Secrets” – The Pierces (Music Video)

“Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you’ll save
Better lock it in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you won’t tell what I said
‘Cause two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.”

The Pierces – “Secrets”

Beneath covert layers,

Hidden, you devise, secrets.

Ones you shouldn’t tell.

If your secrets are deadly,

Your playing games with our lives,

Let your sweet lies lay.

The business of obscurity,

Mask those secrets, don’t tell me,

Hidden truths veiled well.

“Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you’ll save
Better lock it in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you won’t tell what I said
‘Cause two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.”

Hands over my ears, disappear,

Your corrupt ideals, hurt us all.

Close your mouth, don’t talk.

Duck-tape your lips closed tight,

Reveal nothing, sinister girl,

Secrets for the grave.

Don’t enlighten with dishonesty,

Don’t share what you said you’d keep,

Telling truths ends dead.

“Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you’ll save
Better lock it in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you won’t tell what I said
‘Cause two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.”

Your lips move, I hear nothing,

I’m bent on staying out this time,

Your secrets hurt, kill.

A burden you say you must,

Share with me, release venom,

Keep your poison locked.

I’ve closed my door; shut you out,

I have my own secrets but,

Those I never tell.

“Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you’ll save
Better lock it in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you won’t tell what I said
‘Cause two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.”
