“Bird Set Free” by Sia

I’ll shout it out, have no doubt, I’ll fly free,

No whispered tunes of birds flitting off key;

A hush of melodies from ages past,

Notes, movements, which won’t disappear — they’ll last.

So, I’ll shout it out like a bird set free.

Singing for love, for possibility,

For the sweetness of words’ probability.

To soar, to rise high, past rising winds,

Find His Spirit within, not to rescind —

Those promises not given lightly, but —

Oaths we crossed ourselves, and kept, to catch gusts —

Off the highest cliffs and spread our wings fast.

Wait; breezes tickle wings, catch the updraft.

So, I’ll shout it out like a bird set free.

Holy Spirit as you rose, naming Him,

Your Holy Son, whose blood liberated sin’s —

Hold on all, on those who who yearned for flight.

No more pain; no more losing wicked fights.

No more bullies who pull feathers out; who —

Know not the joy of sky’s an unknown blue.

So, I’ll shout it out like a bird set free.

Mandi, this is brilliant. I have always found Sia’s music powerful and deeply connected. Her story, as well, overcoming depression and Graves Disease. The anonymity of her singing character, letting her words and music speak as they should, more than the singer. And then her ability to mock the character she created.

And that is all before I read your poem, which I find utterly and deeply powerful. You have connected with the song in a powerful way and put voice to a poem of healing so many of us need as we emerge from our own depressions and sadnesses that keep us caged. Will you print this, sign it and mail it to me so I can hang it on my wall as words for me to read when I think I have emerged from my own depression but fear I am falling prey again to its delicate touch that can drag us back down into its seductive darkness?

Thank you for writing this poem and more importantly thank you for sharing it.

Of course I will print and sign this for you. I will also email it to you. I just emailed to bother you about answering interview questions, if you feel ready. So, if you want to email your address to me by responding to that email, I will write it out nicely on Word with the pic, and send it to you.

oh this is so so beautiful I love and Sia and has been following her voice since the old days she was part of the Zero7 band. You have dome so much justice to the song and loved the way you have described the soaring spirit crushing the sadness and depression.Loved it to bits.

Thanks so much Megha. I’m a huge Sia fan too. I first heard her working with David Ghetta (Titanium, She Wolf) and continue to love her music. This is one of my favs 🙂
