Writing Prompt: Poem – Quadrille – “Sounds of Sleep” #amwriting #poetry #dVerse

Thanks to MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie for Writing Prompt #218 on night sounds.

Also, I’m combining the prompt with #dVerse WhimsyGhizmo Poet’s Pub Quadrille Prompt on freefalling.

Plush, toasty,

Huddled mass,

Bedsheets cotton crumpled,

Furnace’s ember glows.

Sky clouds,

Dreamy veil.

Screeching cars,

Train whistles,

Downy soft knit throws,

Tangled knots.

Nightmares, quandaries,

Thunder roars,

Rain lashes out,

Dishes clinked,

Crickets laughing.

Duck tapped silence,

Drifting — no wings,

Lethargic before,

Free-falling awake.

“Bedsheets cotton crumpled” is a particularly wonderful turn of phrase. And the idea of crickets laughing. Love it.

Thank you whimsy. I was trying to create these separate images, descriptive and also odd as things get when we’re asleep and dreaming but also a bit awake, aware of sounds in the night in some way.

Thanks Bjorn! Yeah it’s like awaking is reality and reality is more freeing then dreams, nightmares, and all those sounds mixing with them. A sense of safety in consciousness and also the falling part from dreams. Falling to wake up but it’s a good thing.

Thanks for stopping by Frank. Yeah, I guess a lot of noises mixed with dreams and nightmares. I don’t know about you but sometimes sleeping is more exhausting than being awake 🙂
