A Mixed Bag

The submarines of old stood out in the San Diego Harbor as Carla walked Bruno and Velma the dachshunds.

After tiring out both dogs, she paused to gaze at the submarines along the walkway. It didn’t appear as if any navy personnel had worked on them in over seventy-five-years.

The subs were relics of WWII, but Carla knew many men had died and been terrified for their lives in such submarines. The US had used them effectively ‘island hoping’ to help defeat the Japanese, after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. Of course, the bombs had sealed the deal.

Suddenly, the dachshunds began to bark and yip ferociously. They pulled on their leashes willing Carla, their Mom, to go home.

She gazed back at the submarines one last time and let out a frightened shriek. Upon the old submarine, a ghostly navy crew with 1940’s uniforms, walked atop the sub performing their duties. They stopped, noticing Carla, and turned to whistle at her as if she was some wartime doll for kicks

When she blinked again, the apparitions were gone. Carla decided she needed something stronger in her coffee this morning. Maybe she’d forget the coffee part altogether.

Spooky – just in her head or have other people been seeing the ghost crew as well? Nicely told tale.

Thank you for commenting Ian. She definitely saw these ghosts for real and they were not in her head. I hadn’t considered if other people saw them as well. But I would think it’s highly probable certain other people would see them. Maybe especially pretty women. As the ghosts still seemed to like those 🙂

I know eh? It would be so interesting and probably at the same time, often very terrible and sad. Thank you for reading and your comment S 🙂

Great story. Mandi. I liked the part where the ghosts whistled, showing they had no idea they were ghosts. I don’t blame her for wanting something strong after that. I also liked the way the dogs noticed before she did. It was a similar story to mine but also very different. Good writing. 😀 — Suzanne

Thanks Suzanne. Yeah the ghosts just thought she was a pretty girl from their era. Thanks for your comments 🙂

Animals have good sense! We wonder what will happen when all the soldiers of that time are forever gone…

Reminds me of a Twilight Zone – sort of, with a flash break in time. Sometimes on the net you find stories of how the future has visited the past. And they try to prove it with fuzzy photos and say hasn’t that guy or gal have a cell phone, but I think it is more that they have a thick cloth that they may be wiping their face with. But then any fans of Dr. Who or any Sci Fi really will like your tale. 🙂

Thank you Jules. I’m flattered you think so. It could be Twilightzonish for sure. It seems the ghosts here are not even aware they’re ghosts they are doing their regular work still and some pretty woman comes by. Yes it will sad when they are all gone. I hope we can pass down their stories and that as classrooms become increasingly technological, they can replay footage from the wars etc. Give kids some idea of the truth and what it was like for everyone then. Those fighting, those in those awful concentration camps, those at home, etc…

I was in maybe 6th grade (a long time ago) when I saw a reel to reel film on the concentration camps… hard to imagine that anything like that could still exist to some extent.

I know what you mean. But there has been other countries where leaders did just as bad or near to.?Trying to exterminate a race of people like Saddam Hossain to his own people and there are others I can’t recall. Hopefully we never see it to the extent we did with the Jews in WWII or at all for that matter.

Unfortunately such things have happened since the beginning of time…
It would be nice if we could figure out how to break the cycle.
