Flash Fiction for the Aspiring Writer: My Pet Lucy

Thanks to Priceless Joy for hosting the FFftAW prompt each week.

I decided to take Lucy for a walk in the park today. She’s an ‘indoor’ raptor but she plays outside in our large yard.

I remember when we found her four-years -ago…

“Dad, what’s this?” I asked.

” It’s hatching from the egg.” He said. We both watched as a tiny baby raptor was born.

“She won’t be big. She’s a tiny version of a raptor.” We told my Mom.

She sighed. “I heard that same comment about the last pet we had.”  Lucy squeaked. She was Mom’s girl from then on.

I put Lucy’s leash on, petting on her belly. Lucy’s docile and loves our family. She even tries to lay beside us at night.

I set Lucy free on the off leash trail. She catches a couple of rabbits, devouring them.

A women goes by with her two mastiffs: “That animal is an abomination.”

I shrug.”She ate a poodle once. But she’s much better now.”

Thank you PJ. Your story gave me the idea. You said you were thinking dinosaurs could be docile and I thought what if they’re like dogs or other wild pets people keep. Thanks for commenting.

LOL!!! Love the ending! Too funny! Reminded me of the book I read to my girls a lot about a boy who had a pet alligator 🙂

It was a great idea! And if they were tame, I am sure my girl would have been begging for one!! She loved dinosaurs when younger! We have seen all of the Land Before Time DVD’s 🙂

Aw, those are great videos. I think I was too old for them after the second one. The original is my fav and I love the song on the woman sings on it.

Fun story! I would love to have seen the expression on the woman’s face when told ( “she ate a poodle once”) she was probably tripping on her feet trying to get away!

Aw, thanks Rosema. PJ gave me the idea from her post about dinosaurs being docile. So I thought why not make the raptor like a dog or pet. And just like dogs need training, raptors do too. So she ate a poodle before she was trained better. I’m pretty sure she thinks of herself as a dog now and probably wanted to play with the mastiffs. And I don’t like poodles much so I’m willing to sacrifice one lol. Thanks for the lovely compliment. I’m very happy I made you laugh 🙂

Thanks S. Yeah I imagined this raptor was just like a dog. But even dogs have a wildness in them that we can’t tame, or don’t until they’ve been trained. The same goes with raptors lol. Thank you for your comments 🙂 I’m not a fan of poodles, so I was willing to let the raptor eat one.

I’d love to have a tame dinosaur! Great story, Mandi, and I love the last line. 😀

I loved this. You started with the “indoor” raptor, which was a great line and finished with her once eating a poodle. Great story, Amanda.

Thank you Chris. My idea was too have Lucy to almost be just like a dog, but like dogs hunting mice etc they are still wild creatures even when they’re tame. Plus, not a big fan of poodles lol. Happy you enjoyed this.

I love how nonchalant the speaker is. “Oh, yeah Lucy ate a poodle. Oh well.” 😀

Lol. Thank you. It’s like a dog trained not to eat mice he catches, they learn. So did the raptor 🙂

Thanks Jacqueline. I loved the idea of having a tame dinosaur as a pet. I think Lucy was actually a little bit disappointed, she wanted to play with the mastiffs. Thanks for your thoughts 🌷

It’s a sweet story and I don’t think Lucy would have harmed the Mastiff’s.
