Sunday Photo Fiction: Nearsighted Daredevils.

There is a game we play, a dangerous thrilling dare. You can’t have perfect vision to play. In fact, if your eyes are enormously nearsighted you’ll have greater fun.

Your heart will pound as the adrenaline rushes through you. You’ve taken out your contacts and are wearing your glasses as you approach the road. When it’s your turn remove your glasses and prepare.

We’re all standing by the freeway and there aren’t many vehicles going by, but the ones that drive past are going at incredibly high speeds. When your visions poor, the lights from the headlights and taillights change, are gigantic blobs and lines of colour.

Step up to that yellow line that marks where the side of the road ends and the actual fourlane road begins. If you squint, you can make out the yellow line on the otherside, your goal.

Now walk across the road, go fast. You only see a blur of lights and motion. You’re blind remember? Your eyes -9.75. If you cross the road and don’t get hit you win, your body riding high on endorphins.

Such a fun game for stupid daredevils to play; at least until your bestfriend ends up dead.

  1. This reminds me of a game I play with my friends on Grand Theft Auto Online. We go to a freeway, go into first person mode and run straight across the road. We call it GTA Frogger.

Doing this in actuality would be so scary. I think I would be way too chicken to try it.

  2. Sounds like anyone who plays is trying to win a Darwin Award. I suppose that’s one way to eliminate poor eyesight. Remove people with bad vision from the gene pool. Crazy story, Amanda…lol.

    1. Haha. It’s based off a scene from the movie Gattica. Ethan Hawke’s character looses his contacts but still has to cross this road, to stay in character as this Olympian he is pretending to be. All he sees is light and blurriness as he tries to cross the road without being hit. Also, young guys can be really stupid. I think that stupidity more then the nearsightedness, is what we would be eliminating from the gene pool. Thanks for your comments Chris.

    1. It’s all fiction. I don’t know if people actually do this. I remember a seen from the movie Gattica, where the main character played by Ethan Hawke has to walk across the road to the otherside, but his contacts have fallen out and he has severe nearsightedness. The idea came from there, as he saw lights in weird shapes etc and barely escaped being hit. Thank you for reading JR.

  3. Good writing, Mandibelle. You make it sound so believable to those of us who have experienced or read of terribly dumb things that some do for a “lark.” Maybe your readers will all see it as too far out and not make a game of it.
