Sunday Photo Fiction: Alphas Are Fearless.

A Mixed Bag 2014

” I’m not crawling in there Julia,”  Kristen stammered.

“Well Kristen, it’s your final challenge as a pledge and you will become a member of the Alpha Sorority House if you stay in that sewer pipe five-minutes.” Julia said snidely.

“If you don’t want to be an Alpha, that’s cool too. Maybe, I was wrong when I thought you’d be a good fit. Alpha’s aren’t afraid. We’re fearless! So are you going to climb into that pipe or not Kristen?”

Kristen bit her lower lip. She knew she looked nervous and didn’t want to appear weak infront of Julia.”It’s just that it’s a sewage pipe Julia. I don’t want fecal matter all over me.”

Julia was exasperated. ” You can have a hot shower when we get back to the house. When I was a pledge it was much harder to get into Alpha. I had to stay blindfolded in the woods all night with duck tape over my mouth. Do you want to do that? Or do you want to crawl in a sewer pipe for five-minutes and be done with these silly initiation rituals?”

Kristen looked at Julia who was smiling at her with malice. Was this worth the hazing for her to fulfill her teenage dream of becoming part of the Alpha Sorority House at her university? Kristen wasn’t so sure.

    1. I’m not sure which is worse honestly? I’m allergic to to much in the woods so I would probably suffocate. I think I’d have to do the pipe yuck! Thanks for your thoughts Nortina.

    1. No me neither, not worth it. If someone wants me to be in their club, to be their friend they wouldn’t make you go through these hazing events. Girls can be awfully mean though. Thanks for reading and commenting Azul.

      1. True, Mandi. True friendship can’t be measured through hazing or some absurd sacrifice. And she doesn’t need to join a sorority just to fit in or to be one of the “cool guys”.. 🙂

    1. I think some do. They have cracked down on this in Canada and some places in the states. I know there has been charges laid for hazing events. Mostly, with guys though I think. Though I’m sure sororities are just better at hiding those things then fraternities are, being women. Thanks Rosema for reading this post and your thoughts.

  1. I say No, NO, NO….Hate the initiation hazing things that go on at colleges and try to teach my girls to never feel like you have to do something just to fit in! Great story! I like how you ended it, kinda letting the reader decide what she should do!

  2. It won’t be the end of the world if she doesn’t get to be a member of the sorority. However, it could very well be the end of the world for her if she goes along with it and ends up with a terrible disease or infection. Now, that would really be tragic! Not being a part of that kind of nonsense would be the most reasonable thing to do. Great story.

    1. Thanks Jessie. I don’t think Kristen needs friends such as Julia if she’s an indication of what the other sorority sisters are like. There are plenty ways to make friends outside w sorority and to be your own person and not have to conform. Thank you for your very thoughtful comments. I appreciate them 🙂
