Flash Fiction for the Aspiring Writer: One Step too Far for Modern Art

“Look at those cows. They’re incredible.” Dorothy said.

“This entire gallery is full of painted cows. Is this the artists ‘thing?’ Why has the artist painted all these heavy plastic cows?” Stanley asked an art gallery employee.

“Hi, I’m Theresa. I work here at The Moo Gallery, isn’t Shaunda Rose talented? She painted all these cows. I adore how every cow is a unique work of art. Don’t you?”

“Shaunda Rose is incredibly talented. Who would’ve thought of painting plastic cows? Brilliant woman.” Dorothy declared.

“Cows….” Stanley said shaking his head.”Who wants a painted cow in their home or office?”

Theresa smiled plastically and said: “You’re right, cows are Shaunda’s speciality. In fact, these are ‘actual’ cows Shaunda painted. She has the cows sent to a taxidermist and then she has them resurfaced so she can paint them. It’s why they’re so authentic; a great example of modern art. Each cow sells for several hundred -thousand-dollars.”

Dorothy’s enthusiasm for the painted cows evaporated; she felt alarmed.

Stanley shook his head. He knew Shaunda Rose was crazy. Theresa attempted pitching to Dorothy again but Stanley held up his hand.

“Theresa, Shaunda Rose is a nut. Tell her Stanley Manet said so. And yes, Manet was a Great-Great-Great Grandfather.”

    1. It is actually Manet. Monet was taught and inspired by him. Manet was one of the first actual impressionist painters, although not as well known. Yes, Shaunda Rose is a creepy artist. But I’m also round aboutly commenting on some modern art. At some point we have to say this isn’t art. But the whole difficulty with art is it’s to a person’s tastes and own opinions. Thank goodness Dorothy and Stanley have good taste.

      1. Lol. It’s fine lol. Lots of people don’t know that. I have always liked impressionist painting and my style of acrylic painting tends to run that way so when we researched artists in high school and later in art history I chose that era to write on. Only reason I know 🙂 Have a great week PJ. Was your Easter good?

      2. Was nice. First year we didn’t do a big dinner – we just all met for supper. It was nice. Less stressful on my Mom and I. Did u see your family and have a dinner?

      3. No, my mom isn’t in Albuquerque anymore. My brother had to put her in a nursing home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He and my other brother and their wives went to Mexico for Easter. My sister and I went and had a nice breakfast. That was pretty much all I did for Easter. But it was nice and quiet.

  1. I think I just heard the collective gasp of animal lovers all over the world! lol. I like the inclusion of Manet too. The great-great-great grandson of Manet would know a little something about art, don’t you think? Haha! Great stuff!

    1. Haha. Some of them are. Art is all in the eye of the beholder so to speak. What is and is t considered art varies from person to person. Shaunda’s tastes well, very odd and a bit repulsive. Thanks for reading 🙂

  2. That’s very creepy, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone actually did it. The story’s great and funny. (BTW, you’re missing the second “o” from “too” in the title. Not trying to be a grammar Nazi and it’s a super-easy mistake to make, I just know that if I had a typo in a title I’d want someone to tell me so I could fix it.)

  3. Art is all in the eye of the beholder isn’t…..so on the one hand the cost factor alone would have made this prohibitive for most artists but if its your thing then you pursue it……knowing of course poverty is only a way of life…..

    1. It’s a good point Michael. Shaunda was pursuing her dreams and it is ‘make’ or ‘break’ for many of us when we do this. But if you meant this character, I think you would be a bit alarmed with her. She is more then a little off and kind of crazy. She doesn’t make wise decisions because she is stuck in her ‘art.’ I think as a painter on canvas or in a different type of installation she could have done very well, but painting stuffed cows, too creepy for a good market of customers. Then again, some customers are a bit eccentric in their tastes. Thanks for your thoughts Michael 🙂

  4. Loved how you played with this prompt. At one moment, Rose appears to be a genius and in the next moment, she is revealed to be a complete nut case. Glad someone saw through her crazy art. Wonderful post!

    1. Thank you Shivangi. Art is a difficult concept often because it is up to you what you think of as art especially these days. But I do think in some instances, you have to draw the line somewhere. There is a point where some art is just vulgar and offensive. But then, some people who can afford to buy such art, often are eccentric themselves.

    1. Haha I know, this artist is crazy! What I was getting at was, there are such wide opinions on what is considered art. But there has to be a line somewhere don’t you think? I actually creeped myself out with this story. Couldn’t get it out of my head last week 🙂 thanks for your thoughts!
