Poem: Quatrain -‘ Heart Aches Of the Girl,’

A Quatrain is a poem consisting of four lines of verse with a specific rhyming scheme.

A few examples of a quatrain rhyming scheme are as follows:

#1) abab

#2) abba — envelope rhyme

#3) aabb

#4) aaba, bbcb, ccdc, dddd — chain rhyme

I see the connection that bursts,

As blossoms in springtime all,

Ensconced in the sunlight – it hurts,

Knowing she’d find you, take — enthrall.

Realizing time forward thirsts,

For you and her, to have all your firsts.

The future arrives, pain recalled.

One day, becomes a hundred worst.

Doubtful you would comprehend,

A girl’s heart never can be mended,

A woman knows, move on and fly,

But her souring heart is pretend.

You can never hold time back, I tried.

Heartache is for life, no disguise.

You can’t perceive, breathe — realize,

Her with you, transparent I cry.

    1. I was wondering,. I consider you an expert of many poetry forms. For quatrains, Shadow poetry gave only a couple examples, that you can see on my post. Are there other more common forms? Or a person who started doing quatrains first? Thanks.

      1. You are so kind, Mandi. But, like you, I discover new forms every day and when I find one I like I spend a little time researching it. The quatrain has been around since ancient Greek and Roman times. I think it has about fifteen different rhyme schemes but the most popular are AAAA, ABAB and ABBA. Here’s a link for a few quatrains on the Poetry Foundation page. Quatrain comes from the French word quatre, meaning four and the latin word quattuour. However, there is no record of any particular person starting the form I hope this was helpful 🙂

    1. Thanks PJ. Hope you are having a lovely long weekend and that the weather is good where you are. It has been pretty good for us for Winter, so I enjoy going walking outside. Hope you got to see some family or friends 🙂

      1. Thanks Mandi! I just got back from visiting my mother in Albuquerque, so I’m happy to be home relaxing! I did have a nice weekend. Happy to hear you are enjoying the nice weather. It has been nice here, as well. In fact, right now I am wearing shorts. LOL!

  1. The words “time forward thirsts” and a little later “[t]he future arrives” create a thoughtful frame about time that takes anticipation forward to arrival. The phrase “transparent I cry” has many meanings all at once: tears are transparent, we are transparent in our feelings when crying, we might feel invisible as one reason for crying.

“Lovely Mind!” I read above for “Lovely, Mandi!” But, if I may say, lovely mind.

    Thank you!

  2. a poignant poem beautifully written! “You can never hold time back, I tried.

Heartache is for life, no disguise.

You can’t perceive, breathe — realize,

Her with you, transparent I cry. ” that quatrain hit home hardest of all.

    1. It’s good for her, she is experiencing what the speaker would have liked to experience with her first love, but it never was. So she is sad about that because the other girl is the girl her old love keeps for life. Thanks for your comments 🙂
