Chapter 9: The Woman and The Fire.

The beautiful young woman looked taken aback as Nina questioned her. ” No, I don’t think you know me. Maybe you saw me around my boyfriend Malcolm Watts. He works at Mergers. He’s an editorial supervisor for science-fiction books.”

Nina shook her hair out and fluffed it as she tried to remember where this woman was familiar from. Nina looked at her long hair and was frustrated to see the curl she had carefully put in, coming out.”No, I don’t know Malcolm. I’ve never seen John at his work. We’re really new. What’s your name by the way?”

“I’m Talise. And you are?”

“Nina.”

” Malcolm said there was gossip around the office that John had gotten himself a girlfriend over the last week. That happened fast for you didn’t it? I mean how can you really know what someone is like that fast? I don’t mean to be mean but I heard John wasn’t a good guy, at least until recently. Malcolm said he was such a drunk playboy when he started Mergers with his brothers. ”

Nina stared at Talise with trepidation. ” Is there something I should know about? You can tell me. ”

Talise looked hesitant and brought her fingers together before wringing them apart. “I heard John’s still a womanizer. He tells all these girls he cares about them and then they sleep with him and never hear from him again. I hear he has children all over Adare. I heard he had this girlfriend that loved him once. He said he loved her but he didn’t love her and made fun of her with his brothers. She was a friend of mine. She never recovered and jumped into Sirene Lake. You should stay away from John Nina. A zebra can’t change his stripes. He probably is playing you, sorry to say .. .”

Nina was so angry by the time Talise finished her speech. “How do you even know John besides through Malcolm?”

Talise pushed up her oversized glasses with one finger. “I was one of those woman he hurt.  I thought he cared about me. He didn’t. Maybe I should have seen it coming but I was really young.”

“I’m sorry Talise. I know John with many women when he was younger. But he’s learned from his mistakes. I haven’t known him long but I know how careful he is with the women he chooses to go out with now. And he really does care for me. He might have merely said it in the past but with me he means it.”

Talise’s eyes took on a strange glow. She was angry. “Well it’s up to you. I was only trying to help you out, but you seem to think you know what you’re doing.” Nina laughed haughtily.

“Well, I do have six years on you, sweetheart. Almost seven. I have learned a few things in my time. One of them is to trust your gut instinct. I trust my instinct with John.”

Talise frowned. She looked sad actually. “Well it was nice meeting you Nina. I hope you smarten up about John before it’s too late. I have to go find Malcolm.”

Talise walked off and Nina stood in the large entrance of the venue calming herself. What was Talise’s story with John? She had to find out from John later, — if he even remembered Talise. But right now she had to go back to him at their table. He might wonder what was taking her so long.

Nina trusted John. She told him she did. Nina intended to keep her trust and be loyal to John whoever Talise was in his past.

On the way back to John Nina grabbed another Chocolate Ganache Cupcake. Slowly, she ate it and wiped the crumbs from her lips. She was going to be sorry at the gym on Monday.

Nina found John handing over his Visa to pay for the Canuck’s box hockey tickets he’d bid on for her.” Hey we won the hockey tickets.” He said winking. John pushed a lock of Nina’s hair behind her ear. She leaned on his side as she stood letting the electricity between them sizzle and ignite. John’s eyes darkened and he kissed Nina on her nape before biting her earlobe. She inhaled sharply and was about to suggest they go home when she smelled smoke.

“John what’s burning. What’s on fire?” He looked at her with a sad knowledge in his eyes. Another terrible event was occurring around them.

Plums of smoke were coming from inside the venue. People were running out of the room and choking on the smoke. Soon the smoke was too thick to be in the building and everyone had to go outside.

The water sprinkles had come on from the ceiling before most people were out of the Country Club and everyone including Nina and John were soaked and smelled like a fire pit.  The Fire Department of Adare arrived and put out the small fire as people scattered to their cars to gawk and waited for taxis to arrive across the street.

Later, Nina learned no one was hurt in the fire. It wasn’t even a big fire. One of the tables had caught on fire from a candle which had been taken out of a centrepiece. The fire had spread to the next table, but most of the damage was due to smoke. Such a shame when the Country club venue had newly restored  their eighteenth- century building.

John sighed angrily. “Good thing Mergers has good insurance.” John said to Nina. He drove them back to his place in his silver Porsche. He wasn’t in a happy mood. Nina supposed living with bad events occurring to you often was frustrating. Not to mention  it might be hard on John and his family financially. Good thing he and his brothers appeared to have money enough to go around, thanks to their Grandfather. But Nina thought the tole of bad events on John’s psyche was the worst. He must feel guilty that all these things were happening because of a lie he told his brothers.

On the way home, Jasper called to say that Rianne was doing well and the doctor had put Rianne’s arm in a cast. It would be a long six to eight weeks before that cast came off while the bones healed. Rianne was staying at Jasper’s for the night in a guest bedroom and taking Tylenol threes. Nina said she would pick her up the next day and stay with her on Saturday and Sunday. Rianne had broken her right arm and was right handed so doing normal things might be difficult for her.

“Nina,” John asked as she pressed the end call button, “Is everything alright with Rianne?”

“Yeah, she will have a cast for six to eight weeks and she’s in a guest room at Jasper’s tonight.” John smirked. “No, you. She’s got a severely broken arm. They’re not doing that.”John laughed.

John parked his car inside his garage, where she saw a couple of other expensive vehicles and skidoos. She followed John inside his house into the basement where a huge TV was situated within comfortable soft brown leather couches with blankets.

They settled on a couch and Nina half cuddled with John while watching Breaking Bad on Netflix. When they couldn’t stand the smell of smoke on their bodies they went upstairs to the bedroom and showered.

Sometime later, Nina woke up during the middle of the night. She recalled showering and being exhausted as she crawled into bed. Nina felt comfortable beside John who was snoring. She smiled and wrinkled her nose at John, willing him to stop snoring so she could go back to sleep.

She couldn’t help a stray thought about Talise and her warning about John. But here Nina was with John in his bed, on their third date. Still, bad events had occurred that night and Nina hoped her and John could progress to a place where they more then cared about each other. Whatever she felt towards John was more than only caring. It wasn’t love yet but she was drawn to him on such a level she could not compare him with any other past relationship.

John was good for her; he was a person who was redeemable despite his flaws. Everyone deserves a second chance to have a good life where you don’t have to worry about something horrible occurring everyday, Nina thought. She was sad the events had increased since she had been seeing John. He needed help breaking his curse and John needed Nina to do it with him. Nina snuggled next to John eventually too tired to hear him snoring.

Chapter 8: The Stranger and a Fire.

Nina sat beside John as representatives from both Habitat for Humanity and the Children’s Reading program from Mergers, both gave speeches thanking the company and it’s CEO’s  (Jasper, John, and Jordan) for holding this fundraiser. The crowd was assured the money raised by the Silent Auction and ticket sales, would be put to good use.

Dessert was a lavish affair. Tables were set up with tartes, cakes, pies, squares, cookies, and fruit. Many of the cakes and squares were chocolate. Nina looked from the Chocolate Ganache Cupcakes to the German Chocolate Cake. She wasn’t sure which dessert should join the fruit on her plate. She asked John’s opinion.

John patted her back and said to her: ” You have as much dessert as you like. Splurge and have both desserts if you want. Tonight doesn’t count.” Nina looked at John dubiously and shook her head.

“You’re not good for my waistline John.” He patted her tummy fondly in response.

“Okay, tonight and only tonight — I am going to have a Chocolate Ganache Cupcake and German Chocolate Cake. I wish the pieces were smaller.” Nina muttered and filled her plate. John filled his plate with a few desserts and they went back to their table.

While John was in a discussion with a Board Member about one of the well known authors Mergers worked with, Nina devoured her fruit and both chocolate desserts. She felt full afterwards. Then Nina felt guilty because Rianne was at the Medicenter having her broken arm x-rayed, while Nina could eat all the chocolate she dreamed of. At least Rianne was with Jasper.

Nina wondered if anything permanent would happen with Jasper and Rianne. Rianne found few men who could appreciate her drive to have her  company someday. Jasper also had two little boys. Rianne had never wanted kids. She had grown up an only child and didn’t mind being alone. Nina had seen pictures of Jasper’s sons though and they were  adorable.

Nina blinked and looked up to see John staring at her. “You ate all the chocolate?” John said. “I didn’t even get one bite.”

“You had your own,” Nina told John. “My relationship with chocolate is separate from you and I.”

John smiled,”I’ll try to remember that,” he said and wiped a bit of chocolate off her cheek then he grimaced. “Nina” he said quietly, “you’ve got some chocolate icing on your dress.” Nina frowned as John pointed to the icing on the middle of her chest.

“Damn, it’s a new dress too. I better go to the washroom and see if I can clean some of the chocolate out and make it less noticeable.”

John grinned widely.” It makes me notice a very noticeable place. I don’t mind having my eyes drawn there.” Nina looked at him aghast.

“It looks horrible! I hope it comes out.”

” You are beautiful Nina. Despite everything I’ve told you and that has happened, you’re here with me tonight. You even got my brother Jasper interested in a woman again. Rianne’s a first since his wife died. You’re amazing.”

Nina smiled and catching John’s hand before she left, went to remove the chocolate stain off her dress. She was falling for John hard and fast. It was no wonder so many women had slept with him if this is how he treated them when they were together. But maybe, Nina was special to John and he was her John, just as he had called her his Nina.

Dubiously, Nina looked at her dress. Maybe a bit of soap and water would help her. She would try a wet wipe first.

In the Lady’s washroom were charming details of eighteenth-century decor. Nina headed for the twenty-first century sinks and ran straight into a young woman with funky jade coloured glasses’ frames.

The young woman was taller than Nina but had the same white blond hair. The  young woman’s hair was wavy. Big jewel green eyes stared back at Nina from a pretty face. The young woman cleared her throat and waited for Nina to move out of her way. Nina looked at the young woman again. She couldn’t recall if she’d seen her before but she seemed a bit familiar. The young woman had money it was clear. She was dressed in a silky blue-green ombré dress which swept the floor. Definitely a couture piece.

“I’m so sorry.” Nina said moving out the woman’s way, “I got chocolate on my dress and I’m trying to get it off before anyone else notices the big stain on my chest.”

The woman smiled. Her voice was youthful and melodic. “Oh it’s no problem, hon. I’ve had my share of beauty mishaps too. Try not to make the stain any bigger or it will really show up. Such a shame your dress looks fab on you. I hope it doesn’t stain for good, you’ll have to dry clean it tomorrow.”

Nina removed a wet wipe from her purse and began to work the chocolate stain from her hot pink dress. “Yeah, I will have to dry clean it for sure. This icing must have been loaded with cocoa it’s not coming out well. Oh, and thanks for the compliment I love your dress, especially the ombré.”

The woman smiled girlishly.” Everyone says I look good in this colour. Malcolm my boyfriend says I look hot and sophisticated.”

“You can’t be more then twenty-five. I should think.” Nina said making the woman laugh.

“I’m twenty-three-years old, although people often think I’m older. I must look wise. Would you like me to help you get that stain out?”

Nina who was bent over the sink smiled. “That would be awesome. Nothing I do seems to work.” The young woman rubbed at the stain and murmured something under her breath. Nina looked down and the chocolate stain was gone.”How did you do that?”

The woman smiled. “It’s my secret. My Grandmother taught me how to battle laundry stains. Let’s say with a little magic anything can be done.”

Nina thought what the young woman said was terribly funny considering John’s situation. She was half ready to get the woman to use her magic to reverse John’s curse.

Nina and the woman left the washroom together. Nina put a hand out when the young woman started to walk away, “Do I know you from somewhere? Do you work for a company that deals with Wilus Accounting or are you in Marketing? Maybe you know the guy I’m seeing, John Eric. He’s a CEO of Mergers.” The young woman’s face went pale.

Chapter 7: Screams

Nina sat beside John at a table with some of his friends and clients while dinner was served. She had seen Rianne sitting beside Jasper at another table earlier but when she looked again she couldn’t find her anywhere.

Before dessert, Nina told John she needed to find Rianne. John whispered sweet nothings in her ear before she left him. Nina blushed feeling that magnetic pull she had with John. He made her feel fantastic inside and out. Wistfully, Nina left John to his conversations. She walked around the Country club searching for Rianne.

As she looked, Nina almost tripped over a shorter version of John who was half-drunk and holding onto a petite pretty black woman for balance. When he looked at Nina his eyes went big, “You must be Nina,” John told me about you.”But damn. He didn’t say how fine you looked.” He turned back to his date, “Not as pretty as you Carissa.” Then Jordan smiled at Nina and offered her his hand. “I’m Jordan the youngest Eric brother. I’m glad you came. John doesn’t often bring a woman around to work functions, especially with his issues.”

Nina bit her lip. “Well actually, I’ve only known him a little over a week. This is our third date.”

“Only third?” Jordan smiled and kissed Carissa’s cheek. “He needs to keep you. If you can put up with his untimely accidents and break his curse why not? He cares for you he says. He hasn’t cared for a woman since Tia. You never know you could make our lives normal again.” Jordan said barely conscious of Carissa who knew nothing of John’s problems.

“Good to know.” Nina said. Carissa hummed in agitation over Jordan.

“You better slow down Jordan. You look as if you’re going to pass out.” She used the back of her hand to wipe the sweat from his forehead. She smiled at Nina and said, “We’re trying to find Jasper and the lovely tall girl he was with tonight but we can’t seem to find them.”

Nina laughed. “Yeah, Jasper is with my friend Rianne. I was looking for them too.”

Jordan laughed. “Well maybe Jasper is getting some if you know what I mean. You’ve got to date again sometime. . . or even be with a woman, in his case.”

Carissa laughed and shook her head. “I’m sure they’re fine Jordan. But let’s help Nina find her friend Rianne. ” Nina was touched.

The three of them walked back into the large venue where the fundraiser was occurring. The band was singing “American Pie” while Silent Auction items were up for bid. Nina spied box tickets to several sports teams in the area. There were priceless paintings and nights out with local celebrities. There were also Ski or Snowboard trips to Banff and Whistler. The crowning item was a luxury trip to Las Vegas staying in the Pent House at the Cosmopolitan. Nina kept searching for Rianne as she looked at the various items up for bid. She should probably go find John as well.

Nina ran into John talking with some women who were editors and writers for  one of Mergers top selling fashion magazinesJohn put his arm around Nina and kissed her hair. He introduced her to the two women and they started to tell her about their latest articles that had been published. The magazine was a women’s magazine and their topics were on the latest looks for Spring and a feminist article on the state of women in the twenty-first century. Nina was intrigued but she wasn’t able to get a word in edgewise.

Suddenly, Nina heard a woman scream and she felt sick to her stomach. Nina was sure it was Rianne screaming. It sounded like her.

John grasped her arm quickly and they made their way to the large patio doors along one wall of the venue. Nina found Jasper and Rianne on the grass beneath the patio. Jordan and Carissa had also found Jasper when Rianne screamed.

Rianne was sitting on the grass holding her arm close to her chest. Her arm looked badly broken. It was bent at a weird angle. Jasper was trying to get her to stand up on the grass but Rianne was in a lot of pain. She had fallen off the balcony — a result of John’s curse, Nina thought sadly. It wasn’t a long drop from the patio. But the fall was enough to break Rianne’s arm badly.

Nina took her high heels off and slipped off the balcony edge onto the grass.”Rianne, are you okay?”

“Fine, I just broke me arm. I haven’t broken anything in a long time Nina.” Rianne was gritting her teeth.

“Yeah last time was when you stopped playing Volleyball in University. I remember Rianne. Can you get up so we can take you to a Medicentre?” Rianne arose slowly holding her broken arm gently and taking Nina’s arm with her other hand. There were some stairs around the balcony and Nina helped Rianne up the stairs. Jasper anxiously looked on and grabbed onto Rianne’s uninjured arm when she had reached the top of the stairs. “Rianne needs to go to a Medicenter Jasper. Her arms broken,” Nina said. Jasper nodded looking at the odd angle of Rianne’s right arm with alarm.

“I’ll drive,” he said to Nina. “Is that okay with you Rianne?” Rianne smiled and whispered to Nina:

“Don’t come Nina.” She winked and moved her body carefully into Jaspers.

“But you’re hurt,” Nina said.

” I want to be alone with Jasper,” Rianne whispered to Nina and winked again.

“Oh, I see. You’re sure you’ll be fine?”

“Yes Nina.”

Nina followed the group as Jasper tucked Rianne inside his fancy red Mercedes. After, Nina took ahold of John’s hand. She looked into his bright eyes and said: “How are you doing with this. I’m feeling a little scared because my bestfriend just broke her arm. It looked bad.”  John shook his head.

“Of all the things that could have happened, this isn’t the worst. But it’s not the best either.” John said distractedly.

“She could have been being clutzy.” Nina said. “She’s broken bones before doing much worse things.” John considered what she said and shook his head. “You know it wasn’t only an accident. It was my curse. Bad things are happening more often when your around Nina.”

” I don’t understand why,” said Nina. “But Rianne’s with Jasper. She wanted be alone with him, she told me. Rianne is fine. Everything is okay.” John nodded at Nina trying to look more cheerful.

” So, do you like our fundraiser?” John asked changing the topic. “Did you bid on anything?”

“Haha” Nina laughed. ” I don’t have that kind of cash floating around to bid on most of those prizes.”

John smiled. “But I do. What do you want to bid on?” Nina tapped her finger against her lip.

” I think an NHL hockey game would be cool. Maybe a Canuck’s game. I saw they were playing Edmonton one night. I haven’t been to an NHL game since I was twelve-years-old.”

John grinned at her, ” Good choice. You a Canuck’s fan?”

“No, I’m an Edmonton fan actually. My Dad was around in the days Gretzky and Messier played and won all those Stanley cups.”

John grimaced. “Edmonton, really?”

“Yeah I know. They haven’t done anything since 2006.”

John patted her arm as if he felt her pain and they went to bid on the box seats for the Canuck’s game. John could have easily procured tickets for Nina and himself but he chose to bid a large sum of money instead. He wanted to give a sizeable donation to the charities this event was held for. Nina gasped at the number he wrote down on the bid sheet. John only smiled and pulled Nina close to him. He kissed her lips hungrily.

“Let’s go have dessert” John murmured against her lips. Nina smiled.

” I hope it’s chocolate.”

4. How Was Last Night For You – A Sea Witch’s Curse

Chapter 4: A Sea Witches Curse

John played with the thin silver chain around his neck nervously. He appeared to be preparing himself to say what he needed to Nina:

” When I was twenty-five ” said John, ” I was stupid, reckless, and I didn’t care for anyone but myself and what I wanted. What I wanted was girls and to pursue my dream of owning a publishing company with my two brothers. I had a trust fund from my Grandpa, he was well off. I didn’t worry about where I would find the money. But for entertainment and fun I slept with too… too many girl to count.” John sputtered.

“I slept with strippers, I slept with hookers. I slept with girls I liked and I slept with girls I didn’t like. It didn’t matter I only wanted sex. It felt good, still does. I didn’t want the responsibility of girlfriend, I had enough on my plate.” John’s looked ashamed.

“I was working a lot and celebrating life when I wasn’t. I couldn’t tell you the number of women a wealthy man like me has been with. I haven’t completely improved but I’m better, since my experiences with Tia. She was my first serious girlfriend. My brothers and I, we used to party so hard. I would drink until I passed out — happens now and then still. But I don’t spend all my free time getting laid.” John looked imploringly at Nina still fidgeting with his neck chain.

“I’m careful with the woman I date now. I can’t ever date any woman too long or she starts to notice all the bad situations occurring around us are more then a coincidence. Sometimes, I have dated a woman and she gets hurt. O-one or two, women I saw ended up in hospital for broken bones. But Nina you’re different. I care about you. . . I can protect you. I think.”

Nina almost choked on her green tea. She had expected that John was a womanizer, had been trying not to care. But she felt perturbed John had told her that he slept with so many women. Some of these woman thought he cared about them. But he never cared. Thinking back to the night they slept together, Nina was glad they were safe. She looked at John his face was ashen and he was fiddling with his neck chain again. John’s eyes still appeared to have dark circles around them. He perceived all the terrible thoughts Nina might think of him.

John lifted his hand haltingly as if to touch Nina then placed it gently on her knee. ” I’m sorry” he whispered ” I wasn’t a good guy. I’m still not. But I’m getting better. But you need to know this part of me good or bad. Please . . . ” Nina nodded and John continued his tale of woe .

“O-one day I met this girl, Tia. She was beautiful, an angel. Absolutely lovely. I was into her right away. She looked something like you with beautiful blond hair. But her hair was wavy and her eyes green. She had your gorgeous figure and had the best laugh in the whole world. . . We had so much fun being together. She was barely twenty-years-old when I met her. We were together for two years. I -I wanted to marry her but the whole business of Mergers got in the way of Tia and I.” John paused. He appeared sad to Nina and regretful.

” I loved Tia. But she was needy, always wanted to be with me, and do everything with me. My brothers and I had meetings and were acquiring companies. Magazines, newspapers, smaller publishing companies for Mergers. Tia didn’t understand why I couldn’t spend more time with her. I had to work it was important to me. I wasn’t going to only rely on my Trust Fund. I couldn’t let my brother’s down or myself.”

“One day Tia walks into Jordan’s penthouse. I told her to come and chill with us. Jasper’s wife Jennifer was still alive then and was making snacks in Jordan’s kitchen. Tia overheard Jordan say to me, ‘ so are you actually serious about this Tia chick. I mean she’s hot but she’s so young, do you really think she can represent you at business functions? She never came across to me as the right type for the public eye. She’s more of a free-spirit, not a wife.’

“Tia was a party girl. Her and I were well suited that way. But I knew she could be serious too. She could play the part of a businessmen’s wife. I had no doubt. She would have made a fun and impish little wife. But Jasper agreed with Jordan. ‘She has a lot of growing up to do. She’s only twenty -one or two right? We can’t party as much as we used to we have to be professionals and be more discreet who we’re seen with. Tia’s beautiful but didn’t you say you were only with her because she was good in bed and hot?’

“It was what I had told my brothers stupidly even though it wasn’t the truth. And I didn’t know Tia heard all this until she tells me to come and meet her on my boat that evening. I didn’t think she’d even come over to Jordan’s penthouse.”

“Tia and I went downstairs to the cabin of my boat that night and made love all night. I felt guilty about what I let my brothers believe. Tia was an angel. And I felt something was up with her. I didn’t know what but even though she was fierce and passionate with me in bed, when I tried to talk to her she was distant with me.”

” In the morning I awoke and Tia was standing at the end of the bed looking at me with sorrow in her eyes. I asked her if she was okay and she became furious. ‘l loved you, you know.’ she screamed. I told her I love her too. But Tia looked heartbroken and I knew somehow she was their when my brothers and I were talking. The room began to glow brightly:

” ‘ I heard everything Jasper said you told them about me. You were using me for sex.’ Tia shrieks. The cabin bedroom is so bright now I can barely see anything but Tia’s eyes glowing fluorescent green and her beautiful blond hair flowing out behind her. Her voice sounded malicious.

“Tia said: ‘ I curse you. I curse you until the day you find true love and sacrifice yourself for the woman you love. It won’t be easy for a woman to love you. I curse you to have horrible events occur all around you. Events which will hurt woman you try to be with. If you care for a woman again you can protect her, but only then. Caring for a woman will not break the curse only you sacrificing yourself for true love will undo the horrible events you will have to live through each day. I wan’t you to feel how I feel know, ashamed and guilty.”

” ‘How can you curse me?’ I asked her. She told me she was a powerful sea witch.”

” ‘I’ll be watching you closely, John’ she shrieked ‘ I hope you fail and never love again. I hope you die heartbroken like me.'”

” Tia ran up the stairs out of the cabin bedroom and above deck. I chased her but she dived into the sea and swam away. You know, I swear I could see her in the distance swimming away a bright green tail flipping in the water as she swam farther and farther away.” John admitted this last part about Tia with trepidation. He kept glancing at Nina waiting for her to laugh at him. But Nina saw how seriously he believed what he said.

” Tia is a sea, is a sea witch,” John stuttered. “My own family barely believe me but they experience all the unusual events happening around me often.  Jasper and Jordan blame themselves for their part. They know the events that occur around me are a result of Tia.”

” I went looking for her. Perhaps, that is why I love sailing so much. But I have never seen or heard from Tia again. It’s as if she never existed. Her friends don’t know what happened to her and they say she didn’t have any family they knew of. I never meant her family. Tia wouldn’t talk about them. She said she’ll be watching me. Tia said she hopes I never fall in love and only suffer. She’s out there still . . .”

“I loved her. And all the sufferring and bad events those are my punishment for not standing up to my brothers and telling them I loved her. Now, no women can be around me long without noticing accidents happening often, or suffering through these accidents. I’m cursed Nina and that is the truth. John’s sapphire eyes looked haunted.

“But you could be different Nina. The chandelier this afternoon, a piece of flying debris was going to hurt you and I stopped it from happening. I said in my head: ‘you’re not going to hurt her’ and you were fine. It has never worked like that before. Usually, I suddenly see what’s going to occur and it happens. I can’t stop it.

” And the first night we met, the woman at the harbor was going to pull you into the water. You were going to drown because you can’t swim well. I knew it in an instant, so I intervened so you wouldn’t fall in. I can stop bad things from happening to you Nina. I think; I know it means I care for you. You and I could be different. We could break the curse. Maybe, you would try to be with me and get to know me more. Maybe, one day, you’ll love me?”

John hung is head appearing worn out from his explanation. Nina ran her fingers through his soft brown hair as one might do with a child. She looked at John with  determination. From the first time she saw John, she had felt electricity between them. Now she felt affection as well. Curse or no curse. She would not give up on John.

Perhaps, Nina could break the spell and free John. If his explanation was real — his story of Tia as a sea witch –then he was living one giant horrible Grimm’s fairy tale. However, Nina was afraid Tia might come back. What would happen then? She said she’d be watching John.  Nina thought a woman whose heart was broken would as Tia’s was, would want to start again. But maybe she was still vengeful eight-years later?

Nina had seen the horrible incidents that occurred around John and it made sense to her in an odd way, that John was cursed. And if he could protect her, because he cared enough for her, maybe one day Nina could love John? She didn’t understand how he could sacrifice for her but maybe they’d get there…

Nina put her arms around John and gently kissed his neck. Even though he was probably  a womanizer, had been an even worse womanizer, she ached for him and his lost love all because he could not admit to his own brothers that he loved Tia. All because Tia had overheard the wrong conversation.

Nina nuzzled into John’s neck. He smelt wonderful. She identified the scent as  ‘Light Blue’ for men, a fresh scent of sea breeze. John’s breathing was quickening and Nina knew he needed her when he lifted his head up and looked into her eyes with desire. She knew his arms lifting her into him were no dream. Nina’s eyelashes fell against John’s cheek. Lips exploring her face and kissing her the same place she’d kissed his neck were welcome. Nina’s skin flushed as his lips meant hers and his tongue caressed hers. She held onto John. Nina was his lifeline.

Chapter 6: The Fundraiser

“How do I look Rianne?” Nina asked her friend.

“Pretty sexy, I’m glad you didn’t choose the black dress. Hot pink is definitely your colour Nina.” Rianne said.

Nina looked at herself in a tall mirror in her bedroom. The elegant cocktail dress had straps which hung on her arms revealing her shapely shoulders and the top of her back and chest. The hot pink dress was silky and tight. It was brilliant against her white blond hair and fair skin.

“I like your dress Rianne.” Nina said.” It’s cute. Different from all the business apparel you often wear to events such as this one.” Rianne grinned.

” Yeah. I never thought about wearing bright teal before. But it goes nicely with my hair. You’ll be happy. I even bought a pair of nice tall high heels to go along with my dress.” Rianne’s open-toed heels were silver with sequins covering them. The heel was four inches high. Nina loved them. She showed Rianne her own high heels which were made of black lace.

“Why didn’t you let John pick us up?” Rianne asked Nina. “Yeah that’s right,” I overheard your phone conversation with him. “It’s your third date you should let him be the gentlemen while you still can.”

Nina laughed and shrugged. ” I guess I’m nervous something will happen again tonight. The Odds are… I only hope the fall-out isn’t too bad. I told John you and I were doing girl stuff. You know, masks and manicures. So, it made sense for us to go together.”

“Yeah I know,” Rianne said exasperated, “I don’t understand why though. ” You said you care for him a lot. So why wouldn’t you let him give you a ride?”

” It’s nothing,” Nina said, “I thought it could be fun for the two of us to hang out. I’m there with John, but I’m there with you too. We’re a team. You’re my bestfriend and I just need you there with me to convince me I’m doing the right thing with John.”

“I see,” Rianne said. She looked skeptical of Nina’s excuse.”Well, better finish your makeup Nina and stop waving your mascara wand at me. I think the cab is here.”

When Nina and Rianne walked into the Skyline Club Golf and Country House they were awed to see the room was decorated in strings of lights. There were many round tables adorned it pearly white table cloths. They were encircled by chairs in white and pearl seat covers. The tables had glass center-pieces with pretty orchids. Candles floated around the orchids in water. The colour for the event was purple so there were purple cloth napkins and purple balloons everywhere. The Country House was an exceptionally old building which had been restored to its eighteenth-century glory. The architectural highlights with the decorations were beautiful.

There was also a photobooth in one corner where a person could take pictures with silly props and your friends. Nina and Rianne went there first and did their best at making funny faces. They laughed when the pictures came out of the booth . A podium was setup for speeches and a live band performed popular and well loved songs on a stage.  People were in groups talking to each other.

Nina looked for John but she couldn’t find him so Rianne and her went to the bar and ordered some red wine. Rianne and Nina chatted a bit about the venue and the Silent Auction Fundraiser for awhile before Nina finally spotted John looking sharp and talking with an older gentlemen. John looked up and spotted Nina staring at him. He waved to her and smiled.

John shook the man’s hand he was talking to and walked over to Nina and Rianne. He hugged Nina hard and kissed her on the cheek before smiling at Rianne and offerring his hand. ” You must be the famous Rianne,” John said. “I heard about you from Nina. You two have been friends a  long time. Do you still play volleyball?” John asked slyly. Rianne’s face went red as Nina shook her head in exasperation.

” Don’t ask her that,” she swatted John.

Rianne smiled. “You told him that Nina? You told him I lost my shirt and bra in a volleyball brawl in eleventh grade?”

“I didn’t mean to mention it,” Nina said. She felt remorseful but it had been such a funny event, even though it embarrassed Rianne.

“Rianne started to laugh.” She had a big laugh that people noticed. “Yeah” she said smiling at John. “It was the most embarrassing game ever. But I kicked that chick’s ass. She never gave me sass again.” John was laughing now too.

A tall handsome man a few feet away nodded at John and John jerked his chin telling the man to come over. The man resembled John so Nina figured that it was one of his brothers. “This is my oldest brother Jasper. Jasper my girl Nina and her friend Rianne.”

Jasper’s eyes went big when John called Nina ‘my girl.’ But he quickly tried to hide his reaction. His brown eyes went even bigger when he saw Rianne. He smiled at her flirtatiously. John rolled his eyes.

“Rianne. What a beautiful name. How are you enjoying our fundraiser?”

” Well the decorating is very nice and umm . . . the auction items are great. Should raise a lot of money for Habitat for Humanity and for the kid’s reading program. . . ” Rianne was staring at Jasper, and Jasper at Rianne. Jasper’s face broke into a genuinely happy grin.

” I see your wine glass is empty Rianne. Would you like some more to drink?” Rianne nodded smiling at Jasper her eyes alight. Jasper and Rianne walked away to the bar leaving John and Nina speechless. Rianne winked at Nina from the bar.

“Rianne doesn’t generally do that you know. She’s really picky.” Nina said.

“So is Jasper,” said John. “But she better be careful. Jasper has two young boys and they come first in his life.” Nina looked at John running a hand down his cheek and sighed.

” She’s my best friend John, and she knows what she is doing. I’m pretty sure your brother does too. They only met each other so let’s see how things go tonight first.”

John sighed. ” It’s only that she could be another person who could get hurt because of the curse. I didn’t think about that you know. Important people in your life could be hurt by me. You’re not the only one in danger Nina.”

“I told Rianne about you. She thinks you are delusional or that you’re hiding something from me. But she has never experienced the bad things I’ve seen happen around you.”

“She’s a smart woman. Nina you are lucky to have her as your friend. She’s only looking out for you. What if me caring about you isn’t enough? What if you get injured seriously.”

” It’s going to be okay John. I can feel it. Sometimes you have to believe the best is going to happen. And I believe in the best for us and our friends and family.”

John kissed the side of Nina’s face. ” You look stunning by the way. I want to take you back to my house right now, but I can’t. Want to come meet some people with me?”

“Yeah for sure.” Nina said. She went around the room with John while he networked and introduced her to his clients and associates. There were many writers, editors, advertisers, and shareholders from Mergers, all who blurred together after Nina had been introduced to so many people.

Reading a Book by the Pool (www.polishonline.org)

I imagine I’m at the pool,

The sun shines and I tan a bit,

I’m reading a book from school,

Falling asleep I read and sit.

—-

I never read this book back then.

I’m not sure why I read it when,

I could immerse myself in water,

And forget these wrote words slaughtered.

I am Grateful for . . . A List of 5 Things.

1. I am grateful I can enjoy a mug of tea in the morning. This is my favourite kind. It is green tea but also contains a hint of grapefruit, strawberry, and pineapple. It is called Morning Boost, with all natural ingredients. Besides a hint of fruit and green tea it contains: Yerba mate to boost metabolism; Nettle Leaves which are a natural diuretic and antioxidant; Dandelion which improves digestion, cleanses and detoxifies; and Gurana which increases physical endurance, alertness, and stimulates digestion.

2.  I am grateful for lip balm which works well. I won this Rodial Glam lip balm over Christmas. It is a stemcell super-food lip plumping lip balm. It contains 3D filling spheres and Rose wax. Most of all, it is a good product because it keeps your lips from becoming chapped. Check this product out here.

3. I am grateful for great tasting red wine. I have been to a few wine tastings and tried a lot of wine. I picked up a couple bottles before Christmas to keep around. One became a present and this Cabernet-Sauvignon I had a couple glasses of on New Years Eve. My favourite wine speciality shop is Devine Wines in downtown Edmonton. You can even order wine from Devine Wines in the city and have it delivered. Or you can attend one of their fun wine tasting events. Check out their website above.

4.  I am grateful for my IPad mini which I have used until it is barely working. I brought it with me to write in a coffee shop or I used it at home. A lot of time it was easier to use then my laptop. Unfortunately, it’s been five years and the iPad is not performing well. Sad to say goodbye but I will be replacing him this pay cheque. Here’s the new Ipad 4 mini here.

5.  I am grateful for this textbook from my favourite English class in university. It was taught by Dr.Eddy who has retired now. From this textbook I learned in depth about John Donne’s poetry, John Webster’s play The Duchess of Malfi, and John Milton’s poetry and epic, Paradise Lost.
